Before 2001, it was legal to set aside Resources — a subsidiary to the Mitsubishi Corpora- to act as a consultant to other participants within the land for mining as long as the operators had acquired a valid DEC mining permit, which they had. It was Glacial’s understanding that they were going to be “grandfathered in” with their business enterprise, and that they were not subject to the town’s new zoning ordinance. Nonetheless, that did not stop the town from attempting to put the brakes on the entire operation. In early 2004, the town asserted that Glacial was subject to the current ordinance, which prohibited any new mining. Following their decision, Glacial was not to complete the bank financing it had been seeking. Accordingly, in August 2004, Glacial responded with a lawsuit and by September, the town thought it best to settle out of court. They agreed to allow Glacial to commence mining operations. However, that decision did not last long. Approximately three weeks later, they rescinded their previous resolution and Glacial was back in court fighting to stay afloat. It was a legal battle that lasted from 2005 to 2010. It required several appeals and considerable financial expense. Ultimately, the New York State Court of Appeals ruled in Glacial’s favor and the quarry startup began. Glacial from Start Up With the assurance that it was time to continue building the new operation, Clarey turned to Emerald Equipment Systems of Liverpool, NY, supplier and designer of Glacial’s modular wash plant. Clarey met with Jason McKinney and Mike Turney, sales representatives for Emerald. McKinney and Turney had first made contact with Glacial for their screening needs back in 1997. Even though it had been 15 years since that first encounter, Jason and Mike had remained patient and understanding, maintaining a relationship with Glacial during those turbulent times. Ultimately, Glacial chose Emerald because of this kind of faithful customer service and because Emerald Equipment Systems provided Glacial with a state of the art plant design. The Plant Design When raw material is mined, it is loaded directly into a 15-cubic-yard feed hopper using a CAT 980 wheel loader. From the hopper, material moves to the primary screen tower one of two in the wash plant. Each screen tower is outfitted with a Simplicity 6-foot x 20foot triple deck "M” Series incline wet screen. Both screening units are installed with an extra wide four sided walkway for added worker safety. The Simplicity screens feature rollaway chutes and a spray bar system with individual gate valves. As an added component to the sand side of the operation, a classifying tank and two sand screws, finish the washing process for sand as the material comes off the secondary screening system. Currently, Glacial Materials produces and stocks washed round gravel and concrete sand. Washed round gravel sizes include 1As, 1s, 2s, 3s and oversize (3-8-inch). Mixed 1s and 2s and sidewalk mixes are also available. Today, with a continued outlook on success, Glacial Materials strives to be a top supplier of sand and aggregate within a 50 mile radius of Yorkshire. Clarey, Scheetz, and their experienced staff, are striving to build strong relationships with buyers in Western New York. CFA presents 2012 Contractor of the Year Award MT. VERNON, IOWA — The Concrete Foundation Association (CFA) — an organization dedicated to improving the quality and acceptance of cast in place concrete foundations — announces the presentation of its 2012 Contractor of the Year Award to Lance Jordan. Jordan, chairman of Stephens & Smith Construction Co., Inc. of Omaha and Lincoln, NE, has been a member of CFA for over a decade. Jordan served as a Board member for a three year term ending last year. He was nominated for this prestigious award for his leadership in a CFA position on OSHA’s residential fall protection regulation that became effective earlier this year. “I am very humbled to be recognized by our “peer companies” who are members of the CFA,” states Jordan. “For well over thirty years we have admired many of the CFA companies and their owner/managers. In fact we have tried to duplicate many of their processes and systems, which we felt fit our own ‘business model.’ The CFA and its members definitely have set the standards of quality, excellence and professionalism for the cast in place foundation industry.” The annual award recognizes the contributions of a poured wall contractor to the industry. This year’s award was presented at the CFA Summer Convention held on Jul. 2629th in Acme, MI, at the Grand Traverse Resort. According to Jim Baty, technical director of the CFA, Jordan’s dedication to the Association and commitment to a leadership position within their region inspired a major effort undertaken this year to educate and assist contractors to be prepared
as conscientious employers. “Lance exemplified what we see in the legacy of many great CFA leaders,” states Baty. “When faced with the challenge of a significant business risk that would completely change their proven safe working culture, Lance and his company formed an alliance first within their region and then opened up their effort to national attention. He quietly but quickly assumed a leadership role that led our industry into communications with key OSHA officials both regionally and nationally to fully understand the implications of their latest directives to an industry where little, if any, technical advances were being made.” The focus was on the Occupational Safety & Health Association’s (OSHA) reversal of a decade-old position exempting residential foundation construction from requiring active fall protection systems. The exemption from 2001, had allowed foundation companies along with other residential constructions, to continue protecting their workforce through education. The reversal was founded on evidence that work related injuries and deaths were not being reduced and were even on the rise. The exception to this trend was the residential concrete foundation industry where a perfect safety record for the past three years had been logged and only one fatality in the past five years. In addition, Lance and many others in the industry felt that the technology presently available to companies placed workers at greater risk or hazard for both falls and physical stress, thus potentially increasing the
problem rather than reducing it. “Based upon elevated death rates for residential construction and the continued technological advances that have occurred in the construction safety industry over the past ten years, it is easy to understand why OSHA felt the need to remove the blanket exemption for fall protection, as it relates to residential construction,” states Mary Wilson, President of Michel Concrete Company from Springfield, Ill. a member of the CFA Board and lecturer on the topic of fall protection systems for residential concrete. “However, because there have been no technological advances regarding safety equipment for concrete foundation construction, since the initial OSHA exemption, and because contractors have been very successful protecting their workforce through implementation of OSHA supported alternative fall protection measures, the rational for
People on the Move initially exempting residential foundation construction from the conventional fall protection requirement is still valid. Lance has worked very hard to make sure the “right people” are aware of this fact, and hopefully his efforts will result in a concrete specific standard, regarding fall protection. Founded in 1971, Stephens & Smith Construction Company has been providing concrete solutions as a full service concrete contractor in the Lincoln and Omaha Metro area committed to delivering a superior product and the highest level of service to their customers. They provide services that cover the width and breadth of all things concrete including residential, commercial and industrial concrete construction of any size. Stephens & Smith Construction Company is employee owned, with over 200 employee owners allowing them to offer the personal attention of a company owner
on every project. When asked about the value of the CFA and why he and his company have contributed so much to the collective effort, Jordan had this to say. “The CFA has contributed immensely to the growth of our company. The CFA and its members have always seemed to be on the ‘cutting edge’ of new technologies and pertinent current issues that affect our industry. The CFA organization itself has helped us come to terms with such issues as Cold Weather Concreting, Contractor Certification, job site safety, insurance and labor law. Also, the individual CFA members, over the years, have given us guidance in the selection and usage of new technologies such as crane systems, computer assisted drafting, surveying and robotic total stations. At the conventions, the CFA vendor members have always demonstrated to us innovative forming techniques, new
foundation components, equipment and related processes. All of these, I believe, have contributed to the continued success of our company, over the last three decades. The least we could do was offer our effort at this influential problem and leverage the relationships we were building” The CFA was established in 1974 for the purpose of improving the quality and acceptance of cast in place concrete foundations. Matured for today’s economy, CFA focuses on developing a stronger network of leaders throughout North America invested in concrete construction for residential, light commercial and agricultural markets. The CFA represents the interests of its members and the industry through regulatory, certification and business practice development. For more information about CFA, please visit www.cfawalls.org.

SANY opens world’s largest excavator factory PEACHTREE CITY, GA — SANY has opened the world’s largest and most advanced excavator factory near Shanghai, China, that can produce an excavator every five minutes. The Lingang Industrial Park has 10.7-million-square-feet of total space, with 5.9-millionsquare-feet of manufacturing space. The facility cost $818.5 million to build. The factory uses a computerized production management system for maximum efficiency, managing the entire process, from raw steel plate to structural welding, to components and final assembly. Excavator structures and components are transported automatically from underground tunnels to optimize production. The factory will primarily produce excavators in the 20 to 30 ton size range. The facility is unique for its 43,000-squarefeet of gardens, reflection pools, bamboo stands and marble patios that flank the assembly lines inside the facility. The gardens include palm trees, flowers, grass and fountains. “Our Lingang facility is the most advanced, highest capacity exca-
vator factory in the world, and SANY produces more excavators globally than most other equipment brands,” said Tim Frank, chairman of SANY America Inc. “North American customers might rightly ask, ‘What’s in it for me?’ It’s simple: robust and reliable structures, cut and welded by precise, fully robotic systems, assembled by a dedicated team. “Our excavator team is experienced at producing almost as many excavators each year as are sold in the United States by all manufacturers combined,” Frank said. “Add to that robust base the fact that we have U.S. assembly and component supply in our facility outside of Atlanta. You get a great machine at a great price. This is part of SANY’s culture of excellence in manufacturing efficiency, and our plan to become a global leader in excavators.” In addition to excavators produced in Lingang for sale in China, SANY produces base excavator kits that are shipped to SANY America’s assembly facility in Peachtree City, GA. The kits are assembled there, adding the options and features preferred by North Ameri-

can customers. SANY is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of hoisting equipment (crawler, truck, rough terrain and all terrain cranes), concrete machines (concrete pumps, placing booms, mixer trucks and batching plants), road machinery
(motor graders, rollers, pavers and asphalt batching plants), port equipment (container reach stackers, empty container handlers, heavy forklifts and gantry cranes), excavators, mining equipment (rigid haul trucks, road headers, mining vehicles, longwall systems
and continuous miners), pile driving machinery and wind turbines. SANY America Inc. sells, distributes and supports crawler cranes from 110 to 550 U.S. tons, rough terrain cranes from 40 to 85 tons, hydraulic excavators from 7.5 to 33.5 tons, port reach stack-
ers with maximum lift of 99,200-pounds, and empty container handlers with maximum load of 19,850-pounds. SANY America has an operations, assembly and research and development center in Peachtree City, GA. For more information, visit www.sanyamerica.com.
OGDEN, UT — The National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) honored Jack B. Parson Companies (JBP), one of the state’s largest aggregate, ready mix concrete, asphalt, paving and construction materials suppliers, with the Producer Excellence in Quality award for the second consecutive year. The award was presented at the NRMCA’s 2012 ConcreteWorks and Board of Director’s Meeting in National Harbor, MD on Sept. 17. According to the NRMCA, the Producer Excellence in Quality award criteria were established by its Research Engineering and Standards Committee to recognize quality initiatives of its member companies.
To qualify for the award, critiqued companies must demonstrate outstanding performance in seven areas, including customer focus and materials management and testing. Companies are recognized in three categories ranging from production of less than 250,000 cubic yards and greater than 1 million cubic yards. JBP won in the largest producer category. Scott Parson, President and CEO, states, “For the past sixty years, we’ve worked hard to offer the best quality concrete coupled with outstanding delivery and service. This is made possible because of our outstanding employees and customers.” JBP continues its outreach pro-

Dexter Sand & Gravel takes delivery of new DSC dredge RESERVE, LA — Recently, Dexter Sand & Gravel of Missouri took delivery of their new 10-inch Wolverine dredge. The company purchased the hydraulic dredge to reach sand deposits below the ground water level. Dexter Sand & Gravel, a subsidiary of Delta Companies, Inc., purchased the dredge for use at a new 100 acre sand and gravel mine. The dredge will supply a slurry feed to the sand plant for production of concrete and mortar sand, as well as gravel prod-
ucts. Eventually, the mining area is expected to grow to a size of approximately 85 acres and the dredge will operate for about 6 to 8 months out of the year. “We have been very pleased with the features and performance of the Wolverine dredge. DSC and W&S knowledge and expertise has been very helpful to the successful startup of our new dredging operation,” stated Mike Martin, Delta Companies’ Aggregates area manager.
The dredge is known for its highly portable economical design.
DSC’s Wolverine class dredge is manufactured in its entirety at the company’s W&S division located in Greenbush, Michigan. The dredge is known for its highly portable economical design, features a 25-foot digging depth, and is powered by a CAT C-13 diesel engine. The Wolverine has been the preferred dredge amongst companies looking for an affordable option for non-automated
dredge technology. Powerscreen launches Warrior 1400x D U N G A N N O N , NORTHERN IRELAND, 2012 — Powerscreen, one of the world’s leading providers of mobile crushing and screening equipment, launches the new Warrior 1400X screen. Damian Power, Powerscreen Global Product Director said: “The new Powerscreen® Warrior 1400X offers improved performance, lower operating costs, and easier serviceability while building on the reliable foundation of our classleading Warrior 1400 scalper.” The 1400X has been designed with economy in mind, with reduced engine running speed and enhanced hydraulics, the 1400X offers a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 15 percent in comparison to its predecessor. This can translate into a substantial financial saving for customers over the life-
time of the machine. Improved versatility and design specifications are other key achievements of the Warrior 1400X, with the screening angle range widening of 13-19 degrees. Standard stockpiling capacity on all conveyors has increased by up to 25 percent. With the chassis riser option and the telescopic side conveyor option, the fines and midgrade stockpiling capacity is increased to more than double that of a standard Warrior 1400. Time required for setup and shutdown is faster than the previous model, which will be of particular benefit to contractors. Serviceability features include a class leading screen box raise function and the unique ability to raise the collection conveyor. Optimal chute design in conjunction with the new feeder under-tray slide-out feature will minimise any
potential spillage and reduce any harmful material build-up around the machine. The Warrior 1400X now boasts improved mobility with a two speed tracking system as standard. The high speed mode is further enhanced with automatic engine speed ramp-up making the 1400X the fastest tracked machine in its range. The Warrior 1400X can be fitted with either a Tier 3 / Stage 3A Caterpillar C4.4 ATAAC - 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 90kW (120hp) at 1800 rpm, or a Tier 4i / Stage 3B Caterpillar C4.4 - 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 82kW (110hp) at 1800 rpm. Success factors for sustainable change “Some People Say”…Culture’s Link to Optimization and Profit It’s easy to speak and write about equipment performance. Throughput, delays and productivity are linked directly to profits, and their links to cost becomes easy to make when we talk about reducing variable costs associated with production. The reader’s expectations for these topics are clear and quantifiable: investment, time, throughput, capacity… how much, how long, etc. What if the topic involves culture? When hearts and mindsets are involved, it’s a different story. Expectations are often fuzzy but the needs are great. Miners have many skills when it comes to increasing productivity, but culture is our greatest challenge. Linking culture to production, cost and profits can be a challenge. When we can’t easily make that link, we may assume that the link has a minimal impact on performance. I believe that we fail to recognize the financial contribution that culture makes to profit because the connecting point involves the hidden potential to improve (i.e., what’s left to get). By this I mean the excess costs that can be reduced but haven’t been reduced, as well as existing capacity that could be used to produce more
The People Side of Improvement by Kay Sever
tons but remains hidden. Hidden potential is a funny thing… hidden equipment capacity is not recorded anywhere on the general ledger. In fact, to quantify hidden capacity, we must go out of our way to calculate it. Excess costs are recorded on the ledger but are not categorized in a way that makes them easy to spot. As a result, these two categories of hidden potential are not an area of focus and are easily glossed over, even in process improvement work. SOME PEOPLE SAY that ALL opportunities to reduce costs, increase production and optimize performance can be addressed via process changes at the mine/plant level using Six Sigma, Lean, TQM, etc. There is no doubt that millions of dollars of improvements CAN be captured with process changes, but if process changes are all that’s required, why isn’t every mining operation that has implemented an improvement initiative already optimized? Improvement potential can be hidden by what people believe about change, especially by management’s beliefs about change - their role in change, what they accept as “normal”, and their role in removing the barriers that hold them back. Fur-
ther, management beliefs directly affect their behaviors (words and actions) within the team and with the workforce. These behaviors either build trust or tear it down. • With trust, a “proactive” culture forms that is focused on potential (i.e., what is possible to achieve). When a team is focused on potential, they can talk about ANYTHING that stands in their way, including issues considered politically incorrect or “sacred cows”. • Without trust, a “reactive” culture forms that waits to be told what to do, refuses to believe that things could be different and does not consider management’s beliefs or behaviors as barriers to potential or culture change, including communications, follow-through and taking responsibility. SOME PEOPLE SAY that the management system (management processes, beliefs and behaviors) are outside the scope of improvement work - that management already has what they need to make good decisions and that their method of “operating” their management system has worked for years - why change it
now? I have several questions in response to this viewpoint: • How much better do you want to be? • Is it possible that you are leaving significant earnings on the table that hinge on your current mindset and don’t know it? • What if you focused on creating a culture tied to potential instead of just meeting budget every week, month or year? • What would happen if all of your people adopted new mindsets - from “Can we meet budget?” to “How good can we be?” • Do you believe that your property has achieved true optimization? • What if your management team’s mindset is your biggest barrier to change? • What would your shareholders expect you to do to optimize performance? THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH: SOME PEOPLE SAY that “people should just do what they are told to do and we will make money”. How much MORE MONEY could you make with a different management

Featuring a unique design that delivers up to 80 percent more open area than modular polyurethane, minimizing blinding and virtually eliminating pegging, Ty-Wire increases screening efficiency and operational uptime. Furthermore, the unique hybrid design reduces maintenance costs and enhances product longevity. Because materials and
applications vary greatly from one operation to another, 100 percent polyurethane or woven wire screen media aren’t necessarily the ideal fit for all. Characterized by its resilient, low-maintenance qualities, polyurethane is a common screen media choice, but can be very expensive and heavy. A lower-cost option — woven wire — is productive, yet can fall short of yielding the longevity required in many applications. Ty-Wire blends polyurethane and woven wire into an affordable, practical option that’s also designed to maximize screening efficiency and productivity. Comprised of high-carbon woven wire encased with an engineered grid comprised of polyurethane composite,
This Ty-Wire corner piece features Ty-Wire’s high-carbon woven wire encased with an engineered grid comprised of polyurethane composite. Because of this blend, Ty-Wire is able to withstand high temperatures and high tonnages, while offering a wear life of up to six times longer than wire cloth.
Ty-Wire is able to withstand high temperatures and high tonnages, while offering a wear life of up to six times longer than wire cloth. Featuring a tapered opening design, Ty-Wire releases more near-sized material, allowing it to perform as a self-cleaning screen. The top of each opening is narrower than the bottom, preventing plugging of near and oversize material, a common effect of centerline sizing designs. The combination increases uptime and profits while eliminating inefficiencies and unnecessary downtime for cleaning of screen media. Ty-Wire is compatible with any vibrating screen and requires no deck conversion before installation. Typically, a switch from a woven wire cloth — which requires a cambered deck — to a product that sits flat — such as polyurethane — requires a costly deck conversion. However, TyWire is available in modular panels for a flat deck and can be hooked for a cambered deck to eliminate this requirement. Complex or simple, Ty-Wire is effective for the screening in virtual-
ly any application of both wet and dry materials. The screens are available with clear openings, ranging from 1/8 to 1-1/2 inches, thickness from 5/16 to 5/8 inch, and open area from 23.5 to 56.2 percent. W.S. Tyler is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German-based Haver & Tyler, and a leading manufacturer, systems provider and specialist in the screening industry. Focused on all aspects of the screening circle, from particle analysis and screen media, to vibrating screens and processing technology, as well as screening services, it’s the company’s mission to bring new approaches and technologies to the market place. With deep roots and years of experience in the wire weaving and screening businesses, W.S. Tyler is able to effectively meet the needs of customers around the world. For more information, con-

D U N G A N N O N , NOR THERN IRELAND — Powerscreen, one of the world’s leading providers of mobile crushing and screening equipment, announces a series of improvements to the plant controls used in its crushing and screening equipment.
Powerscreen continuously looks for opportunities to integrate new technology within its new product development. The latest advancement within Powerscreen® crushing and screening equipment is in automation and control systems, simplifying the interaction be-
tween operator and machine. Initially launched in 2011, Powerscreen began implementing a wide ranging upgrade to its plant control system to coincide with the redesign of its machines to be compliant with Tier 4i/Stage IIIB emissions legislation.
The upgrade transformed the user interface into a more streamlined and integrated solution. In earlier iterations within the mobile cone crusher range, the system had a multiple controller setup with different interfaces for engine, cone setting, choke control and machine power. With the latest genera-
tion system, all engine and machine functions are controlled and operated on a single, intuitive and graphically driven Human Machine Interface (HMI) colour display. The menu interface and display are designed to provide the operator with a balanced amount of process detail for any given task; from tracking the machine to crusher setting to full plant operation. An operator can access more detailed information through a secondary menu within the setup, diagnostics and alarm settings menu, which can help an operator or service technician identify and resolve faults. Within the screening range, the new colour HMI display provides improved diagnostic capabilities, such as fault log history, electronic engine information and fault code support, while retaining the industry-standard fault icons for shutdown and derate warnings. A small PLC (Programmable Logic Control) inside the display panel houses the main operational software. The aligned rollout of these systems with Tier 4i/Stage IIIB-compliant Powerscreen machines mean that the 1000 Maxtrak, 1000SR and 1300 Maxtrak cone crushers, as well as some Warrior and H-
Range screens, that are already dispatched and in operation include the new plant control with HMI display. The same models with Tier 3/Stage IIIA engines are planned to be upgraded soon. In the USA, Ian Williamson represents a local distributor, Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, and he is certain of the benefits of the system improvements. “The control system advancements have made life much easier for our customers and service department. Our team is able to promptly help customers by resolving any breakdowns in the quickest of times. This system on the newest models is operator friendly and the screen is incredible, even in direct sunlight the graphics are really clear.” Next year will see the release of more new Powerscreen models. These machines will be launched with the “next generation” of our plant automation advances as standard. The system has already been developed and results of initial testing are promising, more information will be available in 2013. For more information on Powerscreen® crushing, screening or washing products or customer support please contact your local dealer. Details can be found at www.powerscreen.com.

Triple B Stone mines specialty rock for an alternative in landscaping materials by Jon M. Casey
Justin Hawksworth, sales representative for Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc. Start up Jeff recalled that until he started his work at Triple “We started out with the equipment that the previous ries) was looking for decorative river rock to use as owner was using and it didn’t take long to realize that we needed to upgrade our plant if we were going to be successful,” said Jeff. “He was looking for one specific sized stone and we could see that there was a market for everything that was coming from the site. As time has passed, we’ve continued to upgrade.” “We started with a Powerscreen Mark II that Greg had been using on some other jobs that he was doing, and it wasn’t long before we went to Powerscreen MidAtlantic, Inc. and bought the Powerscreen Commander 1400 that we are using today,” he said. “About six months later, we could see that we needed more screening capability so we got the Powerscreen Warrior 1800. We were using a Greystone coarse material washer, but that model we had wasn’t big enough to do the job. So late last year, we added the KPI-JCI PHB 1800 Blade Mill and Triple Deck Screen system to clean the rock as it comes off the Warrior 1800.” Meanwhile, Jeff said that in January of 2012, they There are examples of Jeff’s steel fabrication handy work all around the facility.

decided to revamp the entire layout to make it more efficient and more productive. So, he began by fabricating the load out hopper that sits atop a dumping ramp built into the hillside that leads into the clearing above the operation. “My steel construction experience came in handy for a number of projects around here, that load out hopper being one of them,” he said. “Now we can unload the haul trucks directly. Before this hopper, we needed to handle the rock an additional time. Now, the rock is dumped into the vibratory hopper and it moves directly into the screening system.” The work done thus far, demonstrates Jeff’s ingenuity and experience in steel fabrication and equipment installation. He noted that one of his earliest projects was building a heavy duty steel bridge that traverses Dry Run Creek, leading back to the portion of the property where the mining of the rock actually takes place. “We needed a bridge that would be able to hold the larger haul trucks that we were planning to use here,” he said. “So I built a 100 ton bridge that can handle the load. It has done the job and then some!” The production process River rock and sand is dumped into the load out hopper, with the largest material passing over the grizzly and onto a conveyor sending it directly to a boulder stockpile. These eventually will be hand washed so that even rock of this size can be sold as a clean, washed material. Material that passes through the grizzly goes directly onto the Powerscreen Warrior 1800. There, material is screened into three sizes with the largest, 6 to 14-inches rock going into a haul truck to be taken to a stockpile. The 2 to 7-inch medium sized material moves onto the Commander 1400 where it is screened and washed with the under 2-inches passing through a Telsmith classifier log washer before being stockpiled. The 2 to 4-inch and the 4 to 7-inch are washed, then conveyed to their respective stockpiles as well. The 1-3/4-inch material screened through the Warrior 1800 conveys up and through the KCI-JCI 24-foot x 16-foot Blade Mill, then passes over its Triple deck, triple screw sand screen system, giving them four washed products: Sand, pea gravel, ½ to ¾-inch and ¾ to 1-3/4-inch. “When we are in full production, we have the capacity to run about 300 tons per hour,” said Jeff. “Right now, we are running in the 200 to 220 ton per hour range.” Jeff said that the operation currently employs seven to ten people depending on the season. As sales in-
crease, the workforce will increase accordingly. “Jack Davidson, our mine foreman and his son ‘Beau’ operates the equipment and handle the daily operations. My daughter Megan is here for the summer doing administrative work as she takes a break from her studies at college. I oversee the operations here and take one or two days away from the plant doing sales work.” Jeff commutes regularly between Mooresville, NC and Speedwell, VA, which allows him to oversee the operations here and take one or two days away from the plant doing sales work.” Jeff commutes regularly
between Mooresville, NC and Speedwell, VA, which allows him to oversee the operation and do sales work in their primary market as well. “Greg likes to come in to spend a day when he can,” said Jeff. “He likes to operate the machinery. He’s an excellent equipment operator as well as being a champion racecar driver. During the racing season, his schedule is usually very full. So, he doesn’t visit here as often as we would like.” For more information about Triple B Stone, visit their website at www.triplebstone.com or give Jeff a call at 704-664-3464.
Smaller stone is used to accent this sidewalk in a decorative way. Unlike mulch, stone does not wash away as easily.
One of the first tasks for Jeff was to build this heavy duty bridge that traverses Dry Run Creek. Haul trucks go to and from the mining site over this bridge.
Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc. helps Triple B Stone startup
For Adam Logan, then sales representative for Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc., the opportunity to work with NASCAR racecar driver Greg Biffle, and Greg’s brother Jeff, to help create a first-class decorative stone mining and processing plant, was a challenging yet rewarding experience as a salesperson. That was in 2010 and 2011. Today, Adam serves as regional sales manager for Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc. and is pleased with the results. “Greg owned a Powerscreen Mark II that he was using on some of his properties as he was doing some Adam Logan of Mid-Atlantic Powerscreen (L) and Greg cleanup work,” said Adam. “The Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion for Roush Fenway Racing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series (R), pro- deposit at Triple B Stone contains mote Powerscreen equipment at the AGG-1 and World of a 24-inch minus material, and the equipment that he had when he Asphalt Expo in Charlotte, NC earlier this year.
started the operation, was not sufficient to process that material. Greg wanted to do more than scalp off the larger material.” Adam said that Greg was looking for something like the Warrior 1800 with an open throat design that could handle enough tonnage to keep up with the rest of his plant. He also wanted to be able to move the equipment around easily when he needed to modify his overall plant layout. The Warrior 1800 has been the perfect equipment for the job. “The Commander 1400 rinser cleans the 5-inch and 2-inch rock giving him two clean products off that machine,” said Adam. The other material goes over to the other side of the Warrior 1800
where it is cleaned and screened with the other washing and screening system. With the Powerscreen 1800 and 1400 units, Triple B Stone has an excellent primary and secondary screening system in their operation. “We enjoy working with Triple B Stone,” he said. “Our new sales representative for that area, Justin Hawksworth, is eager to help them refine their operation and increase sales to landscapers throughout the area.” For more information on Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc. visit their website at www.powerscreenmidatl.com or call them at 800 797 7276.

New TS-516 High-Capacity Scalper from IROCK boosts productivity across applications VALLEY VIEW, OHIO — IROCK, a leader in global sales of mobile screening and crushing equipment, has introduced the new TS-516 High Capacity Scalper. The highly durable scalper, one of five tracked screener units in IROCK’s lineup, improves productivity in a range of applications with greater hopper capacity, larger screens and a wider, oversize conveyor. IROCK designed the TS-516 so it can be used in a primary crusher circuit for materials such as construction and demolition waste, iron ore, aggregates, coal, recycling and heavy rock. At the same time, the machine is versatile enough to handle sticky clay and topsoil. It is powered by a 129-horsepower Caterpillar C4.4 engine and is capable of processing materials at a rate of up to 570 TPH. In terms of transportation, the equipment can
be folded and loaded onto a truck or trailer, so it’s easy to move from site to site. As the largest tracked screener in its size class, the TS-516 also has the greatest hopper capacity. With an 11.7cubic-yard hopper, it delivers more capacity than any other scalper in its class. The equipment also increases production capacity with a total of 157 square feet of screening area having a 16-foot by 5-foot top deck and a 15foot 4-inch by 5-foot bottom deck. This design allows users to produce and sort products in up to three different sizes, and the decks can be interchanged so customers have more control over end product size. In addition, to accommodate the high productivity of the rest of the machine, the TS-516 also features a 63-inch oversize conveyor. With a width that improves on the nearest competi-
tor’s scalper by 15 inches, the conveyor accommodates higher tonnages and alleviates much of the potential for congestion. Design features and component options further enhance the machine’s durability and flexibility and provide end users more customization control. A rubber belt feeder is standard on the unit, but customers can substitute a Hardox apron feeder. Since Hardox feeders are designed to increase longevity in the most rugged environments and are ideal for applications requiring maximum durability. While the TS-516 comes standard with an attached cord and remote for controlling and maneuvering the scalper around a job site, many customers gain more flexibility with a wireless remote option. IROCK is not only known for its heavy-duty units and high-quality
components, but also for exceptional customer service. The company has convenient 24-hour online parts look up and ordering, fast delivery, and live service support until 9 p.m. EST. IROCK is a leading manufacturer of portable crushing
plants, screening equipment and other related products. The company, which formed in 1992, is committed to bringing the most productive, quality equipment and solutions to customers through innovation, expertise, and outstanding service and support. For

Instant tramp iron protection with the CH-800 series electric dump valve by Sandvik Sandvik has released the advanced electric dump valve system which is the quickest tramp iron protection system of any cone crusher available on the market. With an astonishing sampling rate of 200 times per second of the hydraulic pressure, this state of the art control and hydraulic system reacts instantly to uncrushable objects, such as tramp iron, drill bits, mill balls, excavator teeth, pieces of steel or severe packing of fine material in the crushing chamber. The design of the Sandvik HydrosetTM system coupled with the electric dump valve system allows for the quick detection and reaction to uncrushable objects thus decreasing the risk of internal damage to the crusher. Customer benefits include:
1. Quickest tramp iron protection system of any cone crusher available on the market which reduces exposure to damaging pressure peaks by over 90 percent. 2. Output signal from the PLC control system notifies the operator that the crushing chamber is opening. Customers can take corrective actions to remove the unwanted object from their process. 3. The external dump valve is located on the side of the crusher supporting increased safety and easier access during maintenance. “Customers who have already installed the electric dump valve have seen significant improvements in the protection efficiency. The service life of structural components, bearings and liners has increased significantly due to the reduced
exposure to pressure peaks,” says Andreas Christoffersson, Product Specialist, Mining cone crushers. “Judging by customer feedback and firm orders already received, we see that the electric dump valve clearly provides value to our customers and gives them peace of mind,” adds Christoffersson. ly influenced by bit penetration rates. Increasing rate of bit penetration is mostly determined by impact energy and flushing efficiency. Rockmore has targeted improvements in bit design such that the rock cuttings flush more effectively from the bit face, leading to better penetration rates and increased bit life. The CrossFlow design is intended to provide more efficient rock cutting flushing in order to improve penetration rates and extend bit life. Design Features: The CrossFlow bit incorporates new design features in the bit face, particularly in the geometry and placement of flush holes, flush grooves, and tungsten buttons. The intent of the new bit geometry is to remove the broken rock chips, which result from the percussive blows, away from the bit face and up towards the hole annulus as quickly and effectively as possible. The flush holes are

placed strictly near the center line of the bit in order to help the flushing medium, usually compressed air for quarry drilling, to more effectively push the rock cuttings away from the bit center towards the bit edge. This direct air path from the bit center to edge provides improved flushing characteristics compared to conventional flush hole positions that are farther from the bit centerline. Standard flush hole positions do not provide adequate flushing medium at the center of the bit, creating a dead zone of rock chips. Such rock chips remain at the center of the bit and prohibit good advancement during the percussion blow cycle, leading to slower penetration rates. The flush holes are located within newly designed flushing grooves that promote maximum flow of rock cuttings away from the
bit face. These V shaped flush grooves are much wider at the bit edge than conventional designs and greatly enhance the ability of the flushing medium to carry the larger rock chips away from the bit face and up towards the hole annulus. In addition, the rock chip velocity is reduced at the wider section of the flush groove at the bit edge, leading to a reduction of steel erosion on the body of the bit. Lowering the erosion factor on the matrix of the bit, known as “body wash,” will extend overall bit life greatly. The tungsten buttons are placed strategically around and between the flushing holes and grooves such that the carbide buttons contact the rock most effectively with each percussive impact from the bit to the rock face. The ideal contact mechanism between each button and the rock
is deep penetration of the tungsten carbide into fresh unbroken rock at each percussion blow. The placement of carbide buttons on the CrossFlow bit design maximizes the effectiveness of the carbides to penetrate and break the rock, resulting in improved penetration rates. Design Offering: Threaded button bits 89-127mm for TopHammer applications. DTH button bits with CrossFlow design currently in development. Design Benefits: Higher penetration rates, improved bit flushing characteristics, less bit erosion known at body wash, and extended bit life. By using the Rockmore CrossFlow bit design, drilling operators in quarries can reduce drilling consumable costs and increase their overall drilling efficiencies.
OAK BROOK, IL — International Equipment Solutions, LLC (“IES”) has acquired, through an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary, CWS Industries (Mfg) Corp. (“CWS” or the “Company”). This is the fourth acquisition by IES since its formation. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. IES was formed in September 2011 as a platform for investments serving the construction, agriculture, landscaping, infrastructure, recycling, demolition, mining, and energy industries. IES’ first two acquisitions occurred in September 2011 when the company acquired Paladin Brands Holding, Inc. and Crenlo LLC
from Dover Corporation. In November 2011, Stephen Andrews was retained as Chief Executive Officer of IES to lead the integration of the first two acquisitions and to aggressively grow and globalize the company. As part of its globalization strategy, IES acquired Siac do Brasil, Ltda. (“Siac do Brasil”), a manufacturer of cab enclosures in Brazil, in June 2012. CWS is a leading manufacturer of highly engineered attachment products, including tire manipulators, cable reelers, grapples, buckets and various large excavator attachment products. Its customers include a global network of dealers and end-users in the mining,
oil & gas, forestry and construction markets. CWS is focused on understanding each of its customers’ unique applications and geological conditions and as a result, its attachments and fully integrated equipment systems are tailored to the specific needs of its customers and are able to withstand some of the world’s harshest environments. The Company employs 140 people at two facilities, located in Surrey, British Columbia and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Stephen Andrews, Chief Executive Officer of IES, said, “The acquisition of CWS is another important step towards the globalization and diversification of IES. We are very impressed with CWS’s rapid growth trajectory, customer base, engineering capabilities and broad portfolio of highly engineered attachment products. This acquisition not only strategically enhances our footprint with dealers in Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, but also opens up IES to a growing base of sales relationships located internationally in South America, Russia and Asia. Additionally, the acquisition enhances IES’ product portfolio to include a suite of attachments with applications in the high-growth mining, oil & gas and forestry end-markets, which are currently underserved by IES.
