This stockpile of various sized stones will be crushed with a portable crushing unit and sold as sub-base material for local construction projects. The H&H Materials, Inc. sand and gravel plant near Stoneboro, PA is known throughout Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio as one of the area’s foremost suppliers of clean PADOT approved sand, custom sand products and extra clean stone. The reason for their success starts with the company’s Supreme-DSC Dredge. It is a 10-yard, clamshell dredge, capable of underwater digging to a depth of 200-feet. Using dewatering screens and desliming cyclones
The series of conveyors atop pontoons, brings material from the dredge to the overland conveyor system.
installed aboard the vessel, the dredge prepares mined sand and gravel for the trip ashore. This onboard dewatering process provides plant operations the advantage of working with material that has been prewashed and screened not only for larger rock but for material that has passed over a finer screen to enhance material quality before it leaves the dredge. It is during this initial stage of working with mined material that H&H can remove unwanted rock and silt. Here, they have the option to return it to the floor of the pit or the rock can be dumped onto a waiting rock barge where it can be offloaded and stockpiled for future use as riprap, landscape stone or crushed into smaller, sub-base material sizes. In either case, the conveyed material arrives at the processing plant ready for further screening and washing, eliminating the need for more equipment in the plant. A closer look at the processing plant confirms the success of this design. “Onboard the dredge, the mined material has passed through the Deister 8-foot by 20-foot Primary Screen and a secondary, 7-foot x 12-foot fines screen for initial dewatering,” says David P. Hoobler, president of H&H Materials. “Larger rocks are dumped onto our rock barge from the grizzly screen where the material is initially dumped from the 10-yard, spade nosed bucket.” “From there, material that is less than 8-inches moves over a screen where gravel and sand are separated. Sand is pumped to cyclones and silt is separated and sent to a waste area. Sand moves on to dewatering screens and is dumped onto the conveyor system along with gravel where it moves across the floating portion to a transition point on land. There, the overland conveyor brings it to the processing plant. In all, the trip is nearly one mile.” “After the trip on the floating portion of the conveyor system, the material comes off the overland conveyor and up to a Deister triple deck screen. The
gravel that remains from the cleaning process aboard the dredge is washed, screened and stockpiled for future sales, while the sand is run through a McLanahan classifying tank and screws before being stockpiled as masonry or concrete sand. The fines are also stockpiled for future sales as well.” “We have found this method to be especially profitable when it comes to saving handling costs and the associated man-hours of labor. With less handling, our costs of production are less. Handling is minimized by our continuous haulage from pit to plant,” he says. Hoobler notes that the Stoneboro plant currently offers more than fifteen products including three grades of mason sand, barn sand, pond sand, State Anti-skid, drainage gravel and crushed rock. Other specialty products like screened top soil, concrete

mix and block sand are available as well. They even offer large, smooth bolder sized rock for decorative stone when available. Production rates can vary, however when the dredge is in full operation, one man is able to produce material from a depth of 200-feet. That is a considerably deeper operational depth than most suction dredge or dragline operations. Since hourly production is a function of bucket cycle time, based on mining depth and material densities at the mining surface, daily amounts will change. Routinely, the Stoneboro plant produces between 500,000 and 600,000 tons of material annually. There is a lot going on in this photo. On the far right, material is transported from the dredge, overland by conveyor, and it is deposited on the infeed conveyor on the center-left of the photo. The material moves up and into the screening and dewatering plant where two grades of sand (Concrete and Masonry Sand) and fines emerge on the right and are stockpiled for shipment. Two or three sizes of stone are also produced and are stockpiled as well. In the far distance on the left, trucks are being loaded for shipment.
Oversized material is dumped from the grizzly screen, onto the chute and into a rock barge that is also built by Supreme Mfg.
The Supreme Dredge bucket has an 10-yard strike capacity, but can hold more if heaped full of material.

SAN DIEGO — The C.W. McGrath family has sold two San Diego County quarries for an undisclosed sum. The McGrath family had owned and operated the quarries since the 1940s and was represented in both transactions by Tom Olson of the Douglas Wilson Companies (DWC). The buyer was JJB Silverhawk, LP an entity closely related to Escondido based Superior Ready Mix, LP. The larger quarry was a “grandfathered” (no conditional use permit required) 64.75 acre granite pit located on Jamacha Road in El Cajon, CA and owned by McGrath Jamacha Road, LLC. The property will continue to be mined for crushed rock, rip rap, aggregate base and manufactured sand. Extensive operating equipment including rolling stock and processing plants were included in the sale. The smaller quarry was a “grandfathered” 21.82acre sand mine located on Willow Road in Lakeside, CA and owned by McGrath Willow, LLC. The property will be mined for sand products. The buyer plans to operate the quarries immediately, utilizing the materials from the mines in its concrete business and selling other aggregate products. The sale of the quarries comes at a time when there is strong demand for aggregate products and local production is steadily decreasing. DWC’s Olson stated that the quarries had a number of components that required extensive knowledge of this specialty asset class — real estate, mineral reserves, heavy equipment, etc. — and that DWC’s brokerage platform was uniquely qualified to handle these transactions. JJB Silverhawk, LP represented itself. Title and escrow was provided by Chicago Title.

Ohio Transportation Engineering Conference 2012: Transportation — Revising the Blueprint Diana Barnum, Correspondent As Ohio’s infrastructure evolves, the Ohio Transportation Engineering Conference (OTEC) reaches out to keep up with growing populations and their transportation needs. OTEC is a two day conference attended people from across the United States. The event is cosponsored by the Ohio Dept. of Transportation (ODOT), The Ohio State University, and the conference is organized to provide something for everyone interested in Ohio’s transportation industry. “Attendance at OTEC continues to grow each year,” said Steve Faulkner, ODOT press secretary. “This year a record 2726 people attend the conference. This is up from the 2697 from last year.” OTEC’s 66th annual event, hosted October 30-31, 2012, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center located at 400 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio. The conference addresses the latest policies and technical information, as well as covers new ideas in transportation policies, planning, design, construction, maintenance, operation, local government and the management of transportation resources. Students, educators and other attendees including consultants, government, industry and transportation officials, contractors
and others enjoyed industry workshops, exhibits, speakers, networking and technical sessions. Among participants were members of the Ohio Aggregates & Industrial Minerals Association (OAIMA), a trade association in Ohio that represents all of the state’s mining operations, except coal. “Of particular interest to Aggregate, Asphalt and Concrete Producers was a session hosted by OAIMA regarding electricity rates in Ohio,” Patrick A. Jacomet, executive director of OAIMA. “Many aggregate producers have seen their bills double and in some cases triple. Sherri Loscko, with Commercial Rate Services, presented a session on the causes and impacts of these unprecedented rate increases to the construction materials industry. The Ohio Aggregates & Industrial Minerals Association is working with a broad coalition of construction materials producers to help their members minimize and mitigate the impact of these increased input costs.” Some of the other popular sessions at this year’s conference were as follows: 1. Transportation Impacts from Shale Development: What Pennsylvania Learned and What Ohio is Doing to Protect its Transportation Systems with organizer Matt Selhorst, ODOT deputy

director and moderator/speaker Lloyd MacAdam, Ohio DOT, New Philadelphia, Ohio. Lloyd MacAdam was part of a four person session that spoke on the impact shale is having on Ohio transportation systems. The session was by far a favorite of the day with the session at capacity and people listening from outside of the room. MacAdam spoke specifically to Ohio and current action being taken in the Eastern part of the state. The other speakers were: Ryan Dean of Chesapeake Energy, Melody Matter of McCormick Taylor and Anna Kuzmich of ODOT. 2. ODOT’s Financial Status: Where is it Heading and What is ODOT Doing About it with organizer Cynthia Gerst, moderator James Barna and speaker Jim Riley. Jim Riley and James Barna spoke to a full crowd regarding the finances of ODOT. Jim spoke alongside James Barna, Rich Winning, and Greg Murphy all from ODOT. Between the four of them they covered the following topics; the gas tax, innovative finance and delivery in Ohio, Ohio department of transportation budget and state infrastructure bank. 3. Ohio Statewide Planning Initiatives with organizer Howard Wood, ODOT deputy director of Planning, moderator Scott Phinney, ODOT and speakers David

New John Deere E-Series features North America’s largest ADT MOLINE, IL — After a successful introduction at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011, the new John Deere 460E ADT joins the 370E and 410E as part of the cutting edge E-Series. The 460E, the highlight of the three models, is Deere’s largest, most operator friendly truck ever built. The 46 ton model is now John Deere’s largest articulated dump truck ever to hit the market. “The E-Series ADT is a customer driven, ground up design to meet and exceed the durability, productivity and uptime needs of contractors,” said Mark Oliver, ADT product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “We worked with road builders, site developers, and the mining, quarry and aggregate segments to develop three trucks that are purpose built to reliably handle various payloads and move materials faster and more efficiently on any jobsite in the world.” Designed and built in Davenport, Iowa, the E-Series ADTs feature a John Deere PowerTech™ 13.5L IT4 engine with three power levels based on the model - 422 net hp (370E), 443 net hp (410E), and 481 net hp (460E). A purpose built ZF transmission includes a high capacity retarder, eight forward gears and four reverse gears. In addition, the new John Deere hauler axles are designed for heavy duty applications and include on-the-fly differential locks, outboard planetaries and each axle is independently pressure lubed and filtered. The E-Series axles use internal wet disc brakes that utilize independent cooling circuits. “This new truck design offers contractors some serious advantages in the market, including high power to weight ratios, gradability and capacity,” said Oliver. “One of the biggest customer-inspired enhancements are the on the fly differential locks that can be applied at any speed, manually or automatically, for improved performance in poor conditions.” Allowing the differential lock system to run in automatic mode will simplify operation for new operators by taking the guesswork out of using the differential locks. When ground conditions get soft and difficult, the system will automatically control the axle differential locks as well as the inter-axle differential lock all while the truck is still moving. An experienced operator can still choose to manually engage the traction controls. The new ADTs incorporate high strength materials to provide durable, long lasting structures while still keeping a strong focus on overall weight and distribution. This provides excellent power to weight ratios and hauling efficiencies. A newly designed stay tight oscillation joint, high suspension travel on all axles, and balanced weight distribution also provide the agility and ability to navigate hostile terrain. To minimize the risk of rollover while unloading, the dump body can be restricted from rising when the rear chassis exceeds a predetermined slope angle. Another new customer driven feature of the E-Series and a hallmark for John Deere is centralized, true ground level servicing to simplify daily maintenance and overall serviceability. All daily service can be completed from the ground. In addition, the all new John Deere Adaptive Suspension Control System improves stability to increase productivity on the worksite. This new suspension system is standard on all E-Series ADTs. Hydraulically controlled fans with swing out

cooling packages on both sides of the engine highlight the cool on demand system. For dusty environments, there is a reversible fan option available for simplified cooler cleanout. The cab monitor provides an easy to read LCD screen with onboard diagnostics, analog/digital gauges, and vital system indicators. Two ergonomically positioned sealed switch modules simplify operation and convenience controls. The auto shutdown feature turns off the engine after an owner-determined period of inactivity to help save fuel while reducing emissions, idle time operation, and subsequent wear on the power train and hydraulics. An On Board Weighing (OBW) system allows contractors to view the weight and the number of loads carried via JDLink™, improving project management and equipment utilization. This OBW system not only allows the customer to track and optimize payload performance of an E-Series ADT, but will also aid in maximizing the life of the tires and chassis. The truck has mirror-mounted load indicator lights that illuminate for the loading operator as the truck approaches capacity (yellow), is at capacity (green), or overload (red).
An integrated tire pressure monitoring system helps maximize traction, tire life and fuel efficiency and access to JDLink Ultimate allows customers to check tire pressures remotely and receive alerts when the pressure gets too low or too high. For those fleet managers, owners or operators looking to get the most out of their equipment, a standard three year subscription of JDLink Ultimate continuously collects and transmits machine data for machine management. The system enables timely preventive maintenance and remote diagnostics, as well as the coordination of machines working on multiple jobsites to get the right machine to the right place at the right time. Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) is a world leader in providing advanced products and services and is committed to the success of customers whose work is linked to the land — those who cultivate, harvest, transform, enrich and build upon the land to meet the world’s dramatically increasing need for food, fuel, shelter and infrastructure. Since 1837, John Deere has delivered innovative products of superior quality built on a tradition of integrity. For more information, visit John Deere at www.JohnDeere.com.

When it comes to hard stone for the Northeast Region, Dyer Quarry, Inc. is the one to call! by Jon M. Casey
Dyer Quarry's processing plant supplies high quality, hard stone aggregates throughout the northeast region. For companies who are looking for high quality diabase, more commonly known as trap rock, customers in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey look to Dyer Quarry, Inc. (one of the Anderson Companies) of Birdsboro, PA as a major supplier. The aggregates that come from this Berks County operation are ideal for specialty uses like railroad ballast, pre-stressed concrete and other high stress concrete products. With approximately 100 million tons of permitted diabase reserves remaining, Dyer Quarry, Inc. is positioned to be a future leader in the area for supplying those specialty products. “We are currently mining at the 220-foot level,” said Bill Hedl, sales representative for Dyer Quarry, as he served as our tour guide when Pennsylvania Aggregate and Concrete Association members who took a tour of the facility in mid-year 2012. “The mining site is 4400-feet long and 1100-feet wide,” he
said. “We are permitted down to 460-feet, but currently, we are at 220-feet. In a good year, we will approach 2 million tons of production, so we are prepared for the foreseeable future.” Hedl explained that shot rock is brought to the primary crusher in any of seven haul trucks currently available at the plant. “We have four 773s; one 769; and two 990s,” he said. “They dump the material into our 6084 Birdsboro Buchanan Jaw Crusher. It was made here in the county in 1926. It has been busy crushing ever since. It’s a pretty remarkable crusher.” From there, the rock is conveyed to the processing plant where it is put through dual 30-inch gyratory crushers and screened into a number of products. Approximately half Dyer’s aggregate is loaded into rail cars in the facility’s train car loading system. The remaining material goes out via truck. “We re-screen and wash the aggregate before load-

We have our own switch engine so that we can move the cars around and get them filled quickly. We have siding space for about 200 railcars.” Hedl said that there are approximately 20 workers on site when the quarry is in full operation. Their primary product line is a very dense material that ranges from 2.96 to 3.0 g/cm3. Some of the lineup includes 3-inch, 67s, 57s, 8s, and Sand. He said that on the production side of the plant operations, much of the equipment is installed in a parallel configuration so that downtime is minimal. If repairs need to take place, there is a parallel crusher, screen, or conveyor to keep the material flowing while the work on the non-operational equipment is being done. Greg Barwis, general manager of the operation, told

the group that the original quarry was founded in the 1950’s and operated under the name of John T. Dyer Quarry. In 1998, James J. Anderson bought the operation and the name was officially changed to Dyer Quarry, Inc. Comprised of 525 acres of land, the facility is served by the Norfolk Southern Rail Line. With the recent addition of the company’s new hydraulic truck scales and main office building, trucks can easily be weighed, ticketed and on the way to their destinations. Hydraulic Institute publishes ANSI/HI 9.6.192012 Rotodynamic pumps guideline for NPSH margin PARSIPPANY, NJ — The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has published ANSI/HI 9.6.1-2012 Rotodynamic Pumps Guideline for NPSH Margin. The new guideline serves as a replacement for the 1998 edition, which was later withdrawn completely in 2003. This guideline covers rotodynamic, general purpose pumps with power levels as high as 5300 hp and impeller tip speeds less than 130-feet-per-second and describes the benefits to pump longevity of maintaining suitable NPSH Margin. Pump users should be aware that “the full published pump head will not be achieved when the NPSH Available equals the NPSH3 of the pump. If the NPSH Available matches the NPSH3, the first stage head will be three percent less than the fully developed value. Today’s higher speed, higher energy density pumps might not achieve acceptable service life under suction conditions without an adequate NPSH Margin. This document serves as a tutorial on the subject of NPSH as well as providing guidance for determining NPSH Margin. The following considerations are discussed relative to the sensitivity of a pump to NPSH related problems: • Impeller inlet tip speed; • Larger vs. smaller impeller eye diameter; • Suction specific speed; • Characteristics of the pumpage; • Operating range of the pump and proximity to POR and AOR; • Materials of construction and cavitation resistance; • Impeller vane overlap; • Pump size and relationship of size to cavitation damage; • Duty cycle — time of operation under cavitating condition; and • Reduction of NPSHA with time This excellent NPSH reference helps pump users understand why it is essential to specify an appro-
New Genesis Cap Lamps provide communication capabilities in mines TORONTO, ON — Cap lamps can now play a critical role in improving the way that mines communicate, collaborate and operate. The new Genesis cap lamp from Northern Light Technologies (NLT) is the first purpose built cordless lamp to house a tracking tag within the all in one, ergonomic enclosure. Tracking tags help mine operators improve their planning and communication with staff, monitor various key elements of mine operations, enhance their data collection and operate mines more safely. Housing the tracking tag within the Genesis cap lamp prevents the loss of tracking tags. Genesis also offers convenience for mine operators by accommodating six different standard RFID and Wi-Fi tracking tags, all of which are powered by the Genesis high capacity battery. And it supports the tracking of personnel and assets on a variety of networks, including the NLT Mining Network. Genesis provides a superior light pattern and perfectly focused spot. The primary LED has a life of 20,000 hours and a minimum of 3,500 LUX. Emergency Flashing is activated with a five second hold down. The high capacity battery discharge time using the main LED exceeds 12 hours and the lamp weighs just 0.41-pounds. Recharging is complete in less than 12 hours and the battery cycle life is in excess of 500 charges. For more information, visit www.nltinc.com.

The updated guideline is available for purchase at the HI eStore<http://estore.pumps.org/Rotodynamic-Pumps-Guideline-for-NPSH-Margin-ANSIHI-961P236C0.aspx> for $80 and is available in both hardcopy and pdf formats. The mission of the Hydraulic Institute is to be a value-adding resource to member companies, engineering consulting firms and pump users worldwide by developing and delivering comprehensive industry

PEORIA, IL — Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) unveiled the first model in its new line of hybrid excavators, the Cat® 336E H, at its Mossville Industrial Design Center at a special trade press event, “The Next Generation is Here.” The new 336E H will be sold and serviced exclusively through the global Cat dealer network following the machine’s official launch at bauma 2013 in Munich, Germany. The order board for the Cat 336E H opens in Feb. 2013, with factory shipments beginning in March 2013. The Cat 336E H uses a new hydraulic hybrid technology developed by Caterpillar. “A hybrid is independent of any particular technology — it doesn’t have to be electric,” said Ken Gray, global product manager for large hydraulic excavators for Caterpillar’s Excavation Division. “There are many ways to store and reuse energy, including our patented hydraulic hybrid system featured on the Cat 336E H.” “Caterpillar has developed, built and tested electric hybrid excavators, but until now we had not found a hybrid approach that would actually lower our customers’ owning and operating costs,” Gray said. “Large excavators operate in high production applications in which fuel is a very significant operating cost for our customers. So, the 336E H, the hybrid version of our workhorse 336E, is ideal for introducing our new hydraulic hybrid technology, with its more than 300 filed patents.” “We can’t wait to see the reaction of our customers to the 336E H,” said Gray. “We’re confident they will be delighted. No other commercially available technology has higher power density than hydraulics, and that’s why we selected a hydraulic solution to help our customers achieve substantial fuel savings. The 336E H also meets stringent Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emission standards. It is extraordinarily quiet, too. So it’s a socially responsible machine for our customers to own, and they will sacrifice nothing in terms of performance, power, force, speed or production. Once more, the owning and operating costs for the 336E H are actually lower than the standard machine. That’s the value customers expect from Cat excavators.” “The 336E H is a game changer — the most revolutionary excavator to come to market in decades,” said Gary Stampanato, vice president of Caterpillar’s Excavation Division. “Customers aren’t going to choose the 336E H simply because it is sustainable. They will select it because it actually lowers their owning and operating costs, and maintains the performance of our industry leader, the 336E. Caterpillar has the most productive and fuel efficient excavator product line in the industry, and our customers are supported by the best dealers in the world. The 336E H extends our leadership, is the right thing to do for our customers and is a sign of great things to come.” Technology “Caterpillar’s corporate technology strategy centers on research and development in advancing technol-
ogy to meet customers’ needs today, which is what the 336E H does,” said Tana Utley, Caterpillar’s chief technology officer and vice president of the Product Development and Global Technology Division. “We’re also continuously working on innovations that we anticipate will meet their future needs. That’s why we’re continuing our research and development in electric hybrid technology too, which actually began our hybrid development path several years ago.” “Caterpillar has an extraordinary team of people working on hybrid technology solutions for the next generation of Cat hydraulic excavators,” added Gray. “They are from every corner of the world, are among the very best and brightest minds, and they are listening very closely to our customers. It’s exciting for me to see their enthusiasm for this project and the quality product they have developed in the 336E H, and we’re just getting started.” “I am absolutely confident our engineers will continue to discover and develop the best hybrid approaches for Caterpillar’s extensive line of equipment and applications, whether that’s some form of hydraulic or electric hybrid system or something as of yet unknown,” Utley added. “At Caterpillar, we don’t simply engage in creating new technologies like the hydraulic hybrid system just for technology’s sake, or simply to prove that we can. Our technology strategy’s focus never loses sight of what our research and development efforts can mean to our customers’ success today and in the future.” Since the introduction of the 300 Series in 1994, the family of excavators has become the industry standard in a large variety of general, quarry and heavy construction applications. Caterpillar introduced the standard 336E in 2010 as a direct replacement for the 336D. The 336E was introduced primarily to meet Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions standards, and like any new Cat machine, the 336E includes several enhancements over its predecessor, including more horsepower with greater fuel efficiency, more lift capability, higher digging force and automatic aftertreatment regeneration. The 336E H has all of the same powerful advantages of the 336E with the biggest difference between the two models being even greater fuel efficiency. To achieve added fuel savings, the design of the 336E H uses three building block technologies that: 1. Conserve fuel with engine power management via the Cat Electronic Standardized Programmable (ESP) pump, which smoothly transitions between the hydraulic hybrid power sources, engine and accumulator; 2. Optimize performance using restriction management via the patented Cat Adaptive Control System (ACS) valve, which intelligently manages restrictions and flows to seamlessly control machine motion with no loss of power, and to ensure operators experience no difference in control, hydraulic power or lift capability; and

3. Reuse energy via the hydraulic hybrid swing system, which captures the excavator’s upper structure swing brake energy in accumulators, and then releases the energy during swing acceleration. Fuel savings The 336E H delivers industry leading productivity with up to 50 percent greater fuel efficiency, which is measured in tons per liter, over the 336D. Customers can expect the 336E H to use up to 25 percent less fuel compared to a standard 336E, and up to 33 percent less fuel than the 330/336D. All three of the technology building blocks, Conserve, Optimize and Reuse, are integrated together to maximize fuel savings in a variety of applications. Even in low intensity swing applications, customers will still experience significant fuel savings because of the Conserve and Optimize technologies. (Additional factors, such as operator skill and jobsite conditions, also affect fuel savings.) Return on hybrid investment Because the 336E H burns less fuel and reduces regulated engine emissions, owning and operating costs will be dramatically lower compared to the standard machine, and its carbon footprint will be smaller, as well. Precisely when customers will recoup their initial investment in a 336E H depends on fuel prices and their applications. Assuming today’s fuel prices and a high production application for a 336E H, Caterpillar estimates customers can realistically expect to see a return on their investment for the hybrid excavator model in as little as one year. Durable and reliable Caterpillar designed the 336E H to deliver the same durability and reliability customers expect of all Cat machines, including large excavators like the standard 336E. The design of the 336E H uses Cat hydraulic components with a long track record of proven durability and reliability for maximum uptime and productivity. Also like a standard machine, 336E H components can be replaced or rebuilt to maximize the hybrid’s service life. Validation Customers have been using field follow machines, which are first production machines built for customer acceptance testing, to validate fuel burn, controllability, reliability and performance of the

The following considerations are discussed relative to the sensitivity of a pump to NPSH related problems: • Impeller inlet tip speed; • Larger vs. smaller impeller eye di-
ameter; • Suction specific speed; • Characteristics of the pumpage; • Operating range of the pump and proximity to POR and AOR; • Materials of construction and cavitation resistance; • Impeller vane overlap; • Pump size and relationship of size to cavitation damage; • Duty cycle — time of operation under cavitating condition; and • Reduction of NPSHA with time This excellent NPSH reference helps pump users understand why it is essential to specify an appropriate NSPH Margin and learn about the negative aspects of specifying an excessive NPSH Margin. The updated guideline is available for purchase at the HI eStore<http:// estore.pumps.org/RotodynamicPumps-Guideline-for -NPSH-MarginANSIHI-961-P236C0.aspx> for $80 and is available in both hardcopy and pdf formats. The mission of the Hydraulic Institute is to be a value-adding resource to member companies, engineering consulting firms and pump users worldwide by developing and delivering comprehensive industry standards, expanding knowledge by providing education and tools for the effective appli-
Hybrid from 27 336E H. In a formal production study completed in August 2012, results were impressive, including greater fuel efficiency and lower cab and spectator noise levels than the 336E and 336D. Additionally, the ACS valve, which intelligently manages restrictions and flows to seamlessly control machine motion, has been in the field since 2008 with superior performance and reliability. The ACS and hybrid system have also proven to work well together to maximize performance and controllability of work tools, including hammers, shears and grapples. Product support and dealer readiness Customer support for the 336E H is provided exclusively by the on the ground support of Caterpillar’s worldwide dealer network. For decades, Cat dealers have made significant and substantial investments in facilities, people and expertise to support Cat excavators, including the new 336E H. Cat dealers know and understand hydraulics, and are prepared to consult with customers to help determine which Cat excavator model, whether hybrid or standard, is the best match for a customer. Dealers are also equipped with tools developed by Caterpillar that help them weigh factors into their recommendations, including a customer’s projected equipment use, budget and anticipated
years of ownership to help ensure the proper decision. The 336E H can also be bundled with extended warranties and service contracts. Caterpillar position on technology According to Utley, it is the company’s vertical integration and broad technology portfolio, coupled with its wide range of application experience that enable Caterpillar to select and develop the optimal technologies for each Cat machine and varied customer applications. “Our commitment is to match technologies to customer value,” she said. “That means Caterpillar will include hybrid elements in machines where it is evident those elements are the most efficient and effective means of improving value to our customers, which is definitely what we’ve done with the 336E H.” “Hybrid technology is a key element of our customer focused technology portfolio, and so are our next generation powertrains, autonomy, alternative fuels, and engine emissions and efficiency,” Utley added. “The new hydraulic hybrid technology Caterpillar developed for the 336E H is an outstanding example of the results we’re achieving from our technology strategy. It provides a critical bridge as we continue to research, develop and build the technologies of the future technologies that will help ensure our customers’ business success.”

Philippi-Hagenbuch will feature Autogate Tailgates at World of Asphalt/AGG1 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — PhilippiHagenbuch highlights its line of Autogate® Tailgates at booth 1321 at the World of Asphalt/AGG1 trade show in San Antonio, Texas. The unique line of Autogate Tailgates is designed specifically as an avenue to maximize haul truck utilization, effectively increasing haul capacities by up to 20 percent while also providing added safety and extended tire life. The Philippi-Hagenbuch line of tailgates includes models suited for both articulated and rigid frame trucks, making it the ideal solution for everything from quarries to coal mines and even mineral mining applications. The increased volume capacity proves effective for any material — hard and rocky or liquid. Continuing its long standing tradition of providing productivity enhancing products to the aggregate and mining industry, Philippi-Hagenbuch designed the Autogate Tailgates as a solution for maximizing the truck’s volumetric capacity while reducing spillage. Unwilling to subscribe to the traditional one size fits all approach of other tailgate manufacturers, Philippi-Hagenbuch constructs the Autogate series with a specific spec for each model and make of both articulated and rigid frame trucks. This tailored approach serves to not only eliminate spillage from the rear of the bed, but also prevents side spillage
— even when driving on inclines or making sharp turns. By blending the unique design and customized fit with the specific truck requirements, such as increased height clearance or enhanced capacity, the PHIL Autogate Tailgates flow with the overall truck design to enhance capacity while also ensuring balanced load distribution for easy maneuvering and enhanced safety. Extending beyond simply increasing capacities, the PHIL Autogate Tailgates offer the added benefit of longer tire life and reduced maintenance by increasing the load target and providing a more centered and evenly distributed load. This optimized balance of the load further enhances safety while driving in adverse or uneven terrain. Operating without a tailgate often results in front loading of the trucks, which causes added weight and stress on the front tires, significantly accelerating wear. In addition, materials are prone to falling off the rear of a truck not equipped with a tailgate, resulting in added risk of puncturing tires or creating additional work for haul road graders maintaining the passage in and out of the quarry or mine. With a keen focus on engineering products with a simple design to reduce maintenance and failures, Philippi-Hagenbuch manufactures the Autogate Tailgates to stand up to years of job site
Miller introduces the next generation SuitCase X-TREME 12VS wire feeder for heavy duty MIG and Flux cored field welding applications New features include improved wire feed speed control and an improved wire delivery system for feeding accuracy and consistency APPLETON, WI — Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has introduced the new SuitCase X-TREME 12VS voltage sensing wire feeder; a feeder designed specifically for welding in heavy duty field applications such as construction, structural steel erection, heavy equipment repair and mobile fabrication. The new SuitCase X-TREME 12VS features a new drive motor assembly, motor control and integrated tachometer that provides electronic wire feed speed control and accuracy that rivals the performance of bench top style feeders found in shop environments. A new wire delivery system also eases wire loading and provides minimal resistance in feeding, helping to further ensure consistent performance in MIG and Flux cored welding applications. Comparable wire feeders tend to fluctuate in performance throughout the day: As ambient temperatures change, and as the feeder gets hotter or colder, wire feed speed can vary from its original setting. These changes in speed can lead to significant changes in deposition rates when welding, especially with large
diameter cored wires. The new drive motor assembly and integrated tachometer in the SuitCase XTREME 12VS ensures the accuracy of the wire feed speed throughout the day so that the feeder performs to exact parameters, whether welding with small diameter solid wire (.023 nch) or large diameter cored wires (5/64-inch). The new wire delivery system makes it easier to load the 12-inch wire spools and reduces drag on the wire by eliminating the inlet guide and allowing the wire to roll over the large radius of the drive rolls. It also features a new visual scale on the wire pressure knob that eliminates guesswork and allows welders to specifically dial in tension to settings they know provide the best performance for the size and type of wire they are working with. Additional new features include the redesigned placement of the shielding gas inlet (for MIG and dual shielded Flux cored welding applications) to better protect the fitting from damage, and a new wire speed dual schedule feature that reduces wire feed speed to 87.5 percent of standard speed for applications such as pipe welding that may require the

Constructed of high strength steel and an exclusive steel alloy chain, the PHIL Autogate Tailgates boast maximum durability with virtually no maintenance in a design durable enough to handle even large boulders. Philippi-Hagenbuch’s unique approach uses no locks, cylinders, grease points or controls — virtually eliminating the potential of malfunction. As the body dumps, gravity naturally opens the tailgate to discharge material from the bed in a design that eliminates traditional maintenance headaches. Autogate Tailgates provide maximum opening at the exact angle where material begins to move, ensuring optimized dumping speed. The Autogate Tailgates are customized to fit nearly any scope and size of articulated or rigid frame off-highway
haul truck and can be installed through the OEM or retrofitted on-site. The three piece tailgate construction allows for easily adapting to different bed widths, ensuring hassle free installation. Railcar opener improves unloading efficiency at Cemex SACRAMENTO, CA — A powerful pneumatic railcar opener has solved persistent work slowdowns caused by difficulty opening discharge gates, allowing the CEMEX Cement Terminal in Sacramento to maintain its aggressive schedule, while minimizing risk to personnel and damage to gates. The Martin® Railcar Opener improves unloading efficiency and speed, without gang tactics, stoop labor or excessive noise. The CEMEX Sacramento plant opened in 1999 and supplies cement for concrete and ready-mix operations throughout central California. Cement is delivered to the terminal by rail from the firm’s California manufacturing facilities, either from the Victorville plant, roughly 400 miles away or from the Davenport plant, a trip of about 165 miles. Four times a week, the terminal receives trains of 40 railcars. Unloading proceeds around the clock — one car every 40 minutes — until all cars are emptied and the train returns to the manufacturing plant for another load. To keep the trains in motion and the terminal’s five silos full (total capacity of 8,500 tons), each railcar needs to be opened and emptied without lost time or risk of injury. Terminal Manager Don Wilkey realized the consistent problems opening the discharge gates of the bottom dump hopper cars was slowing down the process. “The weight of the cargo load against the discharge gate was making the gates very hard to open,” he explained. The plant needed a system to assist in opening the gates, without the backbreaking labor of using a bar or requiring the unloading crew to crawl underneath the car. Wilkey contacted a representative from Martin Engineering, who recommended the company’s rugged, air powered Railcar Openers, which can open even the most stubborn hopper car gate with 2,500-foot-pounds of torque at 90 psi. The adjustable base allows one worker to maneuver the wheeled cart through tight spaces, improving loading efficiency while greatly reducing safety risks for personnel. The height adjustable unit can accommodate different car gate designs and variations in unloading platforms. Three 10-inch x 4-inch pivoting pneumatic wheels allow the unit to maintain contact with the traveling capstan of rack and pinion gate openers, while stabilizers slide out to provide a wide base for increased leverage. A steel tube frame delivers long life under tough, “rea world” conditions. The smooth, non-impacting force opens gates without costly damage, yet is able to operate from a minimal air supply of 20 cfm and with noise levels measured at just 83 dBA at the operator’s position (one meter from the air motor muffler). “The Martin Railcar Opener is a great piece of equipment,” Wilkey continued. “We have two units — one at each of our unloading stations —
so we can open several cars quickly. Our unloading crew would sure hate to try to get along without it. We think it’s the best door opener on the market, bar none,” he said. Founded in 1944, Martin Engineering is the world leader in making bulk materials handling cleaner, safer and more productive. The company supplies flow aids and conveyor products around the world for a wide variety of bulk material applications, including coal, cement, clinker, rock, aggregate, biomass, grain, pharmaceuticals, food and other materials. The firm is headquartered in Neponset, IL, offering manufacturing, sales and service from factory owned business units in Brazil, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Turkey, India and the UK, and under exclusive license with ESS Australia. For more information, visit www.martin-eng.com or call 309852-2384. Global representatives for Martin Engineering can be found at www.martin-eng.com/rep-finder. Martin Engineering also offers railcar connectors to funnel material to the under track system to prevent wind loss and eliminate the safety hazard of requiring workers to crawl under the car. Installed between the tracks, BootLift® Connectors form a link between the railcar and a plant’s under-track conveying system. Powered by air, they raise the unloading boots to the gates for clean, efficient and safe unloading of bottom discharge hopper cars. CEMEX is a global building materials company that produces, distributes and sells cement, ready mix concrete, aggregates and related building materials in more than 50 countries. Founded in Mexico in 1906, the company’s U.S. network includes 13 cement plants, 46 strategically located distribution terminals, more than 100 aggregate quarries and more than 450 ready mix concrete plants. CEMEX USA was named the EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year for 2009 and 2010.
