No time for downtime

B.O.G. Construction, Inc. keeps traf fic moving with the Allied-Gator MT® Series Multi-Tool With a narrow window of time for completion, B.O.G. utilized the MTR 50 C to expedite the demolition process. As soon as the Fourth of July holiday traffic died down around Atwood Lake in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, B.O.G. Construction, Inc. was given the green light by the Ohio Dept. of Transportation (ODOT) to begin its most recent undertaking: replacing the mile marker 14 Bridge over Conotton Creek on State Route 212. B.O.G. Construction, Inc., a Salem, Ohio based company, has been constructing, destructing and reconstructing Ohio bridges since 1988. Contracting exclusively with ODOT, B.O.G. specializes in the new construction, repair, restoration and reconstruction of bridges and culverts throughout the Buckeye State. For this project, B.O.G was contracted to perform bridge rehabilitation, or reconstruction to over 90 percent of the SR 212 bridge. This is the type of work required when only portions or surfaces of a given bridge have become worn or damaged beyond an ODOT acceptable condition. When these bridges have structurally sound underlying bridge components remaining, B.O.G. is contracted to remove the damaged areas and reconstruct the bridge by incorporating the remaining undamaged portions of the structure. Because traditional methods of bridge reconstruction normally yield slim profit margins on these types of ODOT projects, many companies avoid bidding The Allied-Gator MTR 50 C finishes demolition of the second lane of the Conotton Creek Bridge decking in six them altogether. B.O.G., however, has found a new hours. and effective method of completing these jobs successfully, timely and profitably. Over the past three years, B.O.G. owners Mark Gettman and Tom O’Donnell have realized these advantages with the addition of Allied-Gator MT™ Series Multi-Tool units to B.O.G.’s jobsite fleet. For the SR 212 bridge project, B.O.G. utilized the MT Series Multi-Tool model MTR 50 C (with the Quick Change™ Cracker/Crusher Jaw Set) on a 25 ton excavator. The SR 212 bridge restoration project required B.O.G. to remove and replace a two lane bridge, consisting of a 19-inch continuous concrete slab deck covering three separate spans, with an average height of 15 to 20-feet above Conotton Creek. For this ODOT projects, B.O.G. was required work within pressing time parameters, and was given a narrow 60 day window for completion of both demolition and reconstruction of the State Route 212 bridge. In addition, ODOT time specifications usually include the maximum duration of the road closure; however, lack of reasonable alternate routes around Atwood Lake would have presented a great inconvenience for travB.O.G. finishes demolition on the first bridge lane in less than one day and must immediately reconstruct the Allied-Gator 13 bridge decking on the existing piers and columns.

elers, who would have experienced detours up to 30 miles long. Therefore, ODOT dictated that the bridge must have one open, functional lane for traffic at all times. This restriction presented a unique challenge to B.O.G. because one lane of the bridge was required to remain open during the entire bridge restoration project. This factored heavily into B.O.G.’s strategy, with safety of the passing traffic as their number one priority. In order to isolate each lane during the demolition stage and prevent traffic from being affected or endangered, B.O.G. first saw cut the bridge down the center. This divided the bridge into two pieces and isolated each side during its phase of the demolition and reconstruction process, ensuring the safety of both the traffic and B.O.G. personnel. Another challenge presented by this restriction was that, in order to keep one lane open at all times, the bridge had to be tackled in two separate phases. The first lane closed, as specified by ODOT, had to be completely demolished and reconstructed before any work could be performed to the opposite lane. This also required B.O.G. to re-route the lane closure barriers and traffic signal being used to control one lane traffic flow over the bridge.

As soon as the first bridge lane was reconstructed and ready to handle traffic, demolition on the second lane began. In addition to the time restrictions and the inability to close the bridge, B.O.G. was challenged by three environmental factors. First, protected wetlands in close proximity to the bridge on both sides prevented machinery from working or traveling outside the tight boundaries of the specified work area. Secondly, the concrete debris from the bridge had to be removed from the underlying waterway daily to prevent blockage. Because the MTR 50 C crushed the concrete bridge decking into consistently sized material, B.O.G. operator Tracy Cooper could easily remove the fallen debris from Conotton Creek as needed and keep the waterway clear. Lastly, B.O.G. was faced with an exceptionally wet season, causing numerous rain delays and lost days of work that still counted toward the allotted 60-day completion window. Faced with this adversity, B.O.G. was under pressure to make every working day count. The utilization of the MTR 50 C on this project gave B.O.G. all the advantages they were looking for. With fast cycle times and tremendous power, the AlliedGator MT enabled the operator to work continuously and quickly, breezing through the heavy duty bridge decking full of rebar. The MT Cracker/Crusher Jaw Set also allowed B.O.G. to remove the rebar cleanly from the concrete as it was being crushed, leaving material small enough to be combined with dump rock material and used for slope protection. This prevented B.O.G. from spending a large amount of resources purchasing rip rap material for use onsite. By employing a successful demolition plan and utilizing the right tools for the job, B.O.G. had no trouble completing the SR 212 bridge project within the 60 day limit. In discussing the ways in which he would have tackled this job without the MTR 50 C, Mark Gettman reflected. Using a hydraulic hammer was out of the question due to strict ODOT guidelines. In fact, these ODOT restrictions prohibit the use of a hydraulic hammer anytime a bridge deck is being replaced without the replacement of the substructure walls/piers underneath. Due to the damage that hydraulic hammers can cause to the parts of the bridge to remain intact and be integrated into the

Side view of the first bridge lane, prior to demolition (L) and after reconstruction (R). new construction, hydraulic hammers are only permitted during a complete bridge removal and are often subject to the noise regulations of the local community. Saw cutting the entire bridge was also impractical because the bridge deck was so thick. Saw cutting would have yielded pieces too heavy to be removed by an excavator, and would have required a crane, which would have been much more expensive and time consuming. With the MT, each phase of this bridge demolition only took one day. According to Gettman, “Using the MT on a project like this is five times faster than saw cutting and removing the heavy deck sections with a crane.” Furthermore, the large chunks would still need to be hammered into smaller pieces before loading, which would add yet another step to the process. In Gettman’s estimate, using the MTR 50 saved B.O.G. half the cost it would have taken to employ saw cutting as the primary method of demolition. He remarks, “With the MT, we had each bridge lane crushed and out of there by the time we would have been halfway done saw cutting it. There’s a clear advantage to being able to get that much heavy concrete demolished in a single day with one 25 ton excavator.” Overall, the use of the MT Series Multi-Tool has enabled B.O.G. to tackle complex bridge restoration and removal projects with an innovative new approach. B.O.G. can now move on to the next ODOT job, taking with them a positive reputation and all the new experiences gained through overcoming the challenges of the SR 212 bridge project. With AlliedGator MT technology at their fingertips, B.O.G. can complete projects quicker, safer and more profitably than ever before. In a final comment, Gettman summarizes his experiences with the MT, “Every time we’ve used the MT, it’s been great. There couldn’t have been an easier way to do it. In less than a day, for each lane of the bridge to be completely down and out of there — what more could you ask for?”

19-inch bridge decking full of rebar was no match for the MTR 50 C.

One lane of the Conotton Creek Bridge had to remain open at all times, and safety of passing traffic was the highest priority.

B.O.G. continues to bridge the gap with the Allied-Gator MT Although the challenging ODOT restrictions prohibiting the use of hydraulic hammers on select bridge projects initially led B.O.G. owners, Mark Gettman and Tom O’Donnell to the Allied-Gator MT®, the speed, power and efficiency of the MT has kept them on deck. With ODOT bridge refurbishments on the rise, the B.O.G. team is utilizing newer, quicker and more profitable select demolition techniques to grow their business. “We’ve gone from a company who always used a hammer whenever we could, to a company that uses the MT instead. In our line of work, there will still be times when a hammer is the only option, or when saw cutting and rigging are the only way, but for the majority of our projects now the MT has proven itself to be the fastest and most cost effective method,” says Gettman. “The MT has totally changed the way we look at projects. This attachment has given us a clear advantage

from the way we bid to the way we execute these types of bridge projects. We are confident that we will keep finding new ways to use it.” In addition to the time limitations and the structural integrity issue of the bridge’s remaining support members, B.O.G. was faced with some unique challenges on this particular project. “Much of their work was taking place within less than 3-feet from a continuous flow of traffic. Even if ODOT had permitted the use of hydraulic hammers, the flying concrete debris would have definitely caused a safety issue to the passing traffic,” states AlliedGator representative Mike Ramun. With the MT, concrete is crushed quickly and effectively without any flying debris. It is a much safer and controlled method for heavy concrete demolition. “Their challenge of eliminating the heavily reinforced 19-inch thick concrete slab was compounded by the poor soil conditions and the inability to stabilize

the ground all around the underlying creek bed. The access areas near the bridge precluded the use of a machine and tool combination larger than 25 tons,” says Ramun. Allied-Gator MT customers can always count on the ability to conquer heavy duty work with smaller tools and lighter machines. With 11 sizes ranging from 80052,000-pounds, the MT Series Multi-Tool can accommodate any size carrier from skid steers and compacts to the world’s largest mass excavators for use in demolition and recycling of structural steel and concrete, cast reduction, material handling and densifying, as well as railroad rail processing applications. The MT units also feature unrestricted 360 degree rotation, exclusive Fixed Centerline Closure and patented AlliedGator Speed Circuit™ Technology for the fastest cycle times. For more information, and to watch how the MT performed on this project, visit www.alliedgator.com.

Morbark annual Demo Days event a success by Diane Mettler

From a nearby vantage point, visitors are able to see several pieces of equipment in operation up close. Each year Morbark holds a live demo of its news products and shows off some of their newest innovations. In addition, Morbark also provides factory tours, seminars, vendor books and networking opportunities. The Demo Days have turned into a popular event. This year, the two day event, held September 22-23, drew in over 300 people from 15 countries. Thursday evening, following a factory tour and time spent with vendors, Morbark provided a great dinner and entertainment, preparing attendees for the outdoor demonstrations the following day. Mother Nature smiled on Winn, MI on Friday,

following several days of wet weather. We gathered in the morning under sunny skies at Morbark’s demo site. We watched nearly a dozen machines in action — all with new technology designed to streamline processes on the job site and reduce costs. Two highlights were the new Advantage 3 Drum for whole tree chippers and the 3800XL Horizontal Grinder. Advantage 3 The Advantage 3 is Morbark’s high performance chipping drum, which comes standard now on all Morbark’s heavy duty industrial drum chippers. It also can be retrofitted to most existing machines

Wednesday’s factory tour gave visitors an opportunity to see how Morbark’s equipment is assembled.

without modifications. Not only does the drum produce improved chip quality in large volume wood-chipping equipment, it substantially reduces recurring wear part and maintenance costs more than 70 percent, due to AR 400 heat treated steel skin, enhanced knife design and recessed pockets. Tim Adams, Morbark’s Marketing manager, said that some of the larger drums out there cost up to $60 per hour just in maintenance. Being able to reduce maintenance by 70 percent will make a significant difference to a lot of companies’ bottom lines.

Morbark from 24 One case study showed that the approximate life of the knife clamp increased from 100 to 1,000 hours and the life of the knife bolts increased from 100 to 250 hours. Morbark 3800XL Horizontal Grinder The new Morbark 3800XL Horizontal Grinder caught peoples’ attention. Morbark made improvements to the feeding technology, dramatically increasing production capacity and operating efficiency. The big difference is the redesigned reverse pivot feed system, which minimizes space between the feed wheel and the hammer mill. Material can’t hide in the unit and materials move forward, creating more uninterrupted and steady production. Taking Home Chips Once each of the units had finished their demonstrations, visitors were able to sample the quality of the chips. This year Morbark made that process easier by providing bags and labels. Using these for sampling, we were able to collect the different chips, mark the machine from which they came and designate where we wanted the chips sent.

Spectators were able to enjoy field demonstrations in the beautiful sunny weather following serveral days of rain.

Morbark’s wood chippers are now outfitted with the Advantage 3 chipping drum. New President Morbark has made more than equipment changes this year. In early September, James W. Shoemaker Jr. was named president of the company, replacing Lon Morey, who will remain chairman of the board of directors. Shoemaker is no newbie to Morbark. He joined the team in 2003 as manager of Operations. He’s made incredible improvements over the years, working up to vice president of Operations. Morey is confident in his replacement. “He not only has the extensive operations, accounting and supply chain experience, which is instrumental in our global expansion, but he also has extensive experience in change management.” We look forward to not only Shoemaker’s new leadership but another great demo in 2012.

The Morbark 4600XL Wood Hog has no trouble grinding timber into high quality mulch.

The Morbark is available as a tracked unit for enhanced mobility.

Morbark’s tub grinder makes easy work of large pieces of timber.

Morbark, Inc., based in Winn, MI has been innovating and manufacturing durable, high performance equipment for the forestry, recycling, tree care, and sawmill markets for over 50 years. Morbark equipment helps customers harvest, process, and convert wood and other organic materials into valuable, useful and profitable products. Ask the Grinder Guy Hey Grinder Guy, will a screen help me reduce cost in my mulch operation? It sounds like you are struggling with operational costs vs. sales prices like most everyone these days. In short yes, but it does create other issues. Screening will make your mulch perfectly consistent, but can make it look bad too. For example, I recently purchased a $5 bag and a $2 bag of colored mulch from my local home improvement store. The $5 bag was very nicely colored and had a good size and texture except I pulled out about a half dozen pieces that were 10 to18-inches long. Are you kidding me? This is what I get for $5 a bag? The $2 bag was colored about the same but the product looked awful. This mulch was obviously screened to remove the fines, but it looked as if they removed everything 1-1/2inch and minus so it made the product look very rough. But I guess that’s what you get for $2 these days. I have seen many mulch companies that have started screening their products to remove the fines, mostly for bagged materials to save on colorant usage and bag weight. Some just drop out fines while others scalp the overs also. This causes several issues you will need to deal with: • The overs are easily recycled back to the grinder; • The fines must be dealt with. Some sites send them for fuel while others use them for soil amendment. Find an outlet before you start screening; • While removing the weight, you are also removing some volume. You will need to increase your raw materials which will increase your cost per yard; • Your trucking costs inbound will increase because of the greater volume of raw materials and your outbound trucking will increase because the weight of the fines is greater than the mulch itself so the truckload quantities will be smaller; and • Different materials

make different sizes after the grinding process, so you may need to mix materials or change screen sizes on the screener So what is the answer? Just dropping out the fines is a quick fix. If you have an abundance of materials and have a lucrative market for the fines, then that is fine. If not, MAKE LESS FINES! The number one mistake operations make is that they keep everything the same and drop in a screener, so you end up with the same costs, wear etc., plus you added a screener. You are screening to make the perfect product, so use the screener to make your product size and not the grinder. Increase the grinder screen size. If you use a 1-1/2-inch to make your mulch, then try a 3-inch screen to feed into the screener

and keep increasing the screen size until the finished product size starts looking too rough. This will reduce your fines, fuel usage and wear, and then recycle the overs back to the grinder. What screener? • T rommels work better than flat decks because of shear screen volume but nothing works better than a star screen for easy adjustability in product size without changing screens; • Match the screener to your finished product production rate. Matching the grinder production rate, especially after increasing screen sizes, will overload every other component downstream, unless you are only stockpiling. Fines screen sizes will be anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4-inch depending on your product, but don’t

drop out too many fines. The overs can usually be scalped with 1-1/2 or 2inch. The star screen adjustability makes it the push of a button to change the product size on the fly. In conclusion, if you couple the grinder to a screener you are now

starting to automate the process. Whether you are grinding whole trees or regrinding, you can now load at a specific rate while reducing engine load and fuel usage and extending the life of your engine and grinder. Combine those savings with your savings from

increasing the grinder screen size, which increased your grinder wear parts life, and now it makes “CENTS” to screen your mulch. Have a question, we’ll try and answer, grinderguy@askthegrinderguy.com.

“10 Year Trailer” is Verspeeten’s strategy to succeed in waste handling Working closely with Titan Trailers to develop the right trailer for today’s municipal customer leads to a successful long term business plan. INGERSOLL, ON — For those who regularly travel the Highway 401 corridor west of Toronto, Ontario, the sudden influx of sleek aluminum transfer trailers painted with the words “Driven to Succeed” was an unmistakeable change in the local landscape. The larger fleet of smoothside trailers built by Titan Trailers is a new addition for Verspeeten Cartage, based in Ingersoll, Ontario. Verspeeten is well known in the area, principally as a full load carrier with an excellent record of providing just in time service to the automotive assembly plants

Green Lane landfill site 120 miles west, near the City of London. Verspeeten had taken on trash contracts in the past, but nothing on this scale. The Toronto contract required the purchase of 37 new moving floor trailers. For Scott Verspeeten, general manager, making the right business decision for the new fleet was an easy one. “We wanted a 10 year trailer,” Verspeeten declares. “We didn’t go anywhere else.” Scott Verspeeten was already familiar with Titan Trailers when Toronto released its tender for the Green Lane project. Established in 1953 and now operating a fleet of more than 1,400 units, his firm first began hauling waste from Toronto to Michigan in 1998. Titan, also headquartered in

The Paramax suspension, unique to Titan, provided the Verspeeten fleet of Titan Trailers the additional clearance and protection against air bag and tire damage.

Scott Verspeeten and one of his Titan 10 year trailers are becoming part of the landscape of Southwestern Ontario. throughout North America. In January of 2011, however, Verspeeten’s distinctive new equipment began to roll out on the highway with 60 loads of municipal trash per day to deliver from Toronto to the City’s new

southern Ontario, had been making a name for itself in the waste industry with its patented THINWALL body construction, based on a lightweight interlocking extruded aluminum panel designed by the compa-

ny’s President, Mike Kloepfer. In 2003, Verspeeten bought its first Titan trailer, but opted at the time for their traditional steel post and pan-

el trailers. Changes in the business “Trailer weight was not so important then as it is now,” he explains. “We

simply ordered the Titan equipment to match the other traditional transfer trailers in our fleet.” By the time of the Green Lane tender,

though, the business profile had changed. At the old Michigan landfill, trailers unloaded on a

Verspeeten’s 29

tipper stand and the site maintained a clear lane to the tipper. At the new landfill, the trailers simply drive over the trash to their designated unloading area to self-unload with a moving floor. More importantly, Verspeeten’s customers are now paying its contractors by the truckload, not by weight. They demand maximum weights on every load, so the payload capacity of the trailer became a significant factor in Verspeeten’s bid. For Verspeeten, the highway distances, the site conditions and the

payload requirements all weighed in favour of Titan’s THINWALL trailers. The extruded panel of the THINWALL body are assembled horizontally, allowing the trailer to resist twisting stresses as it flexes over uneven ground. The all aluminum body achieves significant weight reductions while the extruded hollow core panel allows higher cubic capacity than traditional post and panel trailers. With the new trailers, Verspeeten can deliver on the customers’ goal of maximizing the amount of waste

moved in every load. At the Toronto transfer station, Verspeeten’s closed top trailers are loaded using compactors that can add severe stresses to the sidewalls and bulkheads. But Scott Verspeeten is confident that the THINWALL body can take the compaction stresses and still live out the 10 year span he required for his business plan. “The bulkheads were bowing under the pressure,” he notes, “but they returned to form as soon as the load came off. There was no stress

cracking we could see at all.” Since then, Verspeeten has worked with the transfer station operators to moderate compaction pressures and to distribute loads more evenly. “Compaction amplifies any irregularities in loading,” he continues. “Too much wet material concentrated at the front can get us into trouble at the scales. We’ve had great cooperation to make the project work for everyone.” Getting it right the first time While the Titan THINPeople are seeing a lot of these on the highway between Toronto and London. WALL body offers inherent advantages for this application, Verspeeten also found that Titan and their local dealer, Titan Trailer Sales of Brantford, Ontario, were also willing and knowledgeable partners in developing the best trailer for the job. “We wanted a flawless start,” says Verspeeten. “Our plan was to buy one early, to run it through the Spring and Summer, monitor results in our shop and give the feedback to Titan before the new trailers went into production.” Titan supplied a prototype to test out the design on the loading areas of the transfer stations and landfills served by Verspeeten. To ensure consistent reporting to the maintenance and engineering group, Verspeeten assigned one driver to pull the test trailer. As Scott recalls, “Mike Kloepfer Titan’s president and members of the Titan design team came right down to the loading facilities with us to see how our trailers were getting loaded; they looked at the ramps and the scales. The people from Titan Trailer Sales, Rob Janiec and Gary Luska, were there, too. We appreciated that they all made so much effort to make sure we had what we needed. Mike Kloepfer, he’s not your typical owner. He gets right in there. He’s very hands-on and, you can tell. It flows down through his management and all his people. They’re all the same. Getting it right was as important to them as it was to us.” Making good ideas better One result of the trial run was a design update

Powerscreen Florida adds Komptech machines to their line Dealer to represent Komptech screeners, shredders and turners in the Southeast WESTMINSTER, CO — Komptech USA has added another major dealer to serve its growing number of customers. Powerscreen is a

leading manufacturer of mobile crushing, screening and washing machinery for the quarrying, mining and recycling industries. Powerscreen Florida serves the Southeast U.S. and Caribbean. To round out its lineup, the company has added

Komptech screeners, shredders and compost turners to its portfolio. Richard Grant of Powerscreen Florida noted, “We are pleased to add Komptech’s broad line of screening, shredding and recycling products to complement the exist-

ing Powerscreen line of crushing and screening products we supply for the markets in the southeast U.S. This addition allows Powerscreen Florida to provide solutions for customers in all related industries in the material process-

ing sector. Komptech’s line of Starscreens, slowspeed shredders and windrow turners provide excellent opportunities for us to deliver needed solutions to our customer’s applications.” Komptech specializes in waste handling and re-

cycling technology. Its machines are made in Austria and appreciated the world over for their toughness, efficiency and build quality. For more information, see komptechusa.com.

the back door to suit different compactors. Their idea for an aerodynamic roofline didn’t work out for us, because all our company tractors have deflectors; but then one of our owner operators asked us specially for that trailer because, without a deflector, it was saving him a lot of diesel.” Running with the 10 year trailer The final configuration chosen for the contract is a 51-foot five axle trailer with IMT SmartSteer axles on the Paramax suspension and with the extreme duty V9 model V-Floor self-unloader system from KEITH WALKING FLOOR. Scott Verspeeten claims that his drivers also agree with the company’s choice. “They’re on the 401 about 90 percent of their time. They say sometimes they don’t even think the trailer is back there. There are some hills along the route where they know they usually have to downshift. But with these trailers, they don’t even have to drop a gear, and they’re hauling maybe three or four tons more than the old trailers.” “After seeing how these work, I wouldn’t think of buying anything else. Knowing what they can do, and all their help to get this job started, it will really help us to bid competitively next time. We’ve got our 10 year trailer, and our customer is getting the heavy weights

they require.” Titan Trailers is a world class innovation leader in the hauling industry long recognized for job specific functionality and attention to manufacturing detail. Titan Trailers offer

business-minded haulers a complete line of trailers utilizing advanced design and manufacturing technologies based on the patented THINWALL extruded aluminum panel. Titan focuses its exten-

sive R&D activities on making its trailers the best business choice for operators in the custom trailer market. For more information about Titan Trailers, visit the Titan Web site at

Verspeeten’s from 29 to Titan’s recently launched Paramax steering axle suspension. Titan developed the Paramax system specifically for off road requirements, but the Verspeeten driver reported that at some of the transfer stations, the steering axles were still rubbing over the ground while in the lift position as the trailer rolled through a hole. Titan modified the axles with longer shocks and switched to low profile super single tires providing the Paramax suspension with 10-inches of up-travel. With the new design, Verspeeten has seen no issues with air bag damage or tire wear. Titan experimented with more design ideas in an effort to improve fuel efficiency, durability and overall profitability before Verspeeten gave the go ahead to build the next 36 trailers. “Sometimes, they would see issues before we did, and came right in to make a change. They suggested the KEITH® VFloor® unloader to us; the lighting, plumbing, aluminum rims, landing gear and running gear... and they coordinated our meetings with the different suppliers to help us finalize our selection and specs. It’s all the higher end stuff that will last the life of the trailer. When you look in the back at that V-Floor, you can see it — that’s going to be one tough floor! They changed

Since its beginnings in 1992, Komptech has been dedicated to customer value. The company has always developed its machines in close consultation with customers, and been quick to create

solutions to their needs. Take the Crambo low speed, high torque shredder. The Crambo was designed to shred whatever came its way, including logs and stumps. Satisfied customers the world

over attest to its efficiency at turning big pieces of wood into tiny ones, and many Crambos eat a steady diet of stumps. Now, not all stumps are equal. There are stumps from regular Komptech decided to beef up the trusty Crambo for more longevity with any diet, creating the new Crambo HD (Heavy Duty). forestry — from ground long ago cleared of rocks, where trees are harvested before they get too old, and where everything is generally under control. And then there are Ken’s stumps. Ken Newman, general manager of Royal Oak Farms LLC, is a composter in central Virginia. He needed a shredder that would handle stumps from land clearing. After doing a lot of homework and field testing, he settled on a Komptech Crambo as the toughest, most capable machine available, and started running land cleared waste wood through it. Ken’s stumps are “wild,” from hardwoods that grew where the seed happened to fall, sometimes around rocks or even old pieces of metal, very big and very tough. Komptech looked at the new challenge with interest. After all, central Virginia isn’t the only place where trees grow big, wild and hard. So Komptech decided to beef up the trusty Crambo for more longevity with any diet, creating the new Crambo HD (Heavy Duty). If the regular Crambo is tough, the Crambo HD is super tough. With 10 percent more horsepower, armored drum, armored teeth, heavy duty gear box, and heavy duty drum bearing, it can chew through pretty much anything that enters its hungry maw. Komptech is confident enough of that to guarantee it for two years. Komptech has always listened to and acted on customer feedback. This has led to innumerable product improvements over the years and has made Komptech machines as uniquely efficient and dependable as they are. The Crambo HD is just one more example of that.

Superior debuts new blog nicknamed Channel 72 MORRIS, MN — Superior Industries, a leading manufacturer of conveyor systems and components, launched a new blog at superior-ind.com/blog. Nicknamed “Channel 72,” the blog will be an outlet for the company to share commentary on the industries Superior serves, news on the products they launch and expert insights into more efficient material handling operations. “We’ll launch our latest product solutions here and share customer stories and operational advice,” said Mary Erholtz, Superior’s director of marketing. “Through our participation in industry associations, trade publications and advocacy groups, we’ll also use Channel 72 to share insights on trends and events that affect our companies and your companies.” Best of all, readers will be exposed to a little bit of Superior’s entertaining, high speed culture. Channel 72 can be accessed via the company’s home page or by visiting superior-ind.com/blog. Posts will be updated every Thursday, sometimes more, but never less.
