Hey, Grinder Guy my fuel bills are costing me my profits! What should I do? Like every other consumer, those of us in the recycling world are suffering from high fuel prices as well. Sadly, it is multiplied times the number of pieces of equipment we all have. If your pricing considerations do not include a fuel surcharge option, you are going to keep losing profits as fuel prices increase. So when it comes to making a change to solve this problem, what are owner/operators doing to turn this situation around? With some 1000 plus hp grinders using 40 or 50 gallons of fuel every hour, your fuel bill exceeds $200 an hour. That is painful and unsustainable without raising prices. When I tell customers they could possibly cut twothirds of their fuel bill by switching from a high speed to a low speed high torque shredder, it surprises them. Inquiries have increased dramatically. I am no engine expert, but I have learned a few things running equipment. Whether you are running a high speed or low speed unit, here are some ideas on how to conserve fuel. Remember, a 10 percent savings will mean thousands of dollars at the end of the year. Air Cleaner — It doesn’t get much simpler than this. Without enough air, your engine will never burn all the fuel
being dumped into the engine. If you see black smoke from the exhaust, the first thing to check is the air cleaner. Replacing them more frequently will save money in the long run. Fuel system — Fuel system treatments and clean fuel filters keep the correct flow and volumes running through the engine. Some fuel treatments are expensive, but especially for older engines. Just the same, treating them will help them run much more efficiently. If you think replacing some of the injectors might be helpful, have a service technician from your engine manufacturer test each injector and they will be able to tell you which are operating correctly and which need replaced. Derate your engine — Have your engine manufacturer derate your engine to a lower horsepower. Each engine has three or four horsepower ratings, so by lowering your horsepower you can save fuel. Talk with your engine manufacturer about the pros and cons. You will probably not notice a loss of 50-100 horsepower, but your wallet will benefit from the change. Keep your services up to date — Change your oil on schedule. Clean oil keeps an engine cooler and running smoothly. Especially with older engines that operated their fuel systems with oil pres—- Cooler fuel will burn much more

efficiently. The hotter the fuel, the more inefficient it becomes. Keep your fuel storage tanks covered and keep your fuel tanks full. Today’s engines return a considerable amount of fuel back to the tank, which in turn heats up the fuel. A full tank keeps fuel cooler. Clutch/Pumps — Keeping your clutch maintained to proper torque and change the fluids regularly. This helps reduce drag on the engine. Eliminating unneeded pumps can also help. Think about converting a hydraulic conveyor to electric power. By eliminating a hydraulic power source, you can save fuel costs. New Fuel Systems — With all the new electronics and new common rail fueling systems, some Tier 4 emission engines are getting better fuel economy than the Tier 3 engines. Speaking with Eric Mathewson and
Sam Meeker of Caterpillar at Waste Expo in Las Vegas, they gave a few other options: RPM Reduction — Something as simple as having the engine computer lower a bulldozer rpm slightly when it is put into reverse can save gallons of fuel per day and not sacrifice productivity. Tracking software — Tracking software on equipment has become a common option. A product such as Caterpillar’s “Product Link” allows you to track many points of operation including idle time. If enabled, the software can shut off a piece of equipment after idling a set period, thus saving fuel. All these features can be tracked remotely as well. Check with your equipment or engine manufacturer for software they may offer.

Command and control with middle weight Volvo wheel loaders The G-Series wheel loaders from Volvo Con-
Grinder from 3 Another example of software assistance is the “Eco mode” on the Komptech Shredders. With this mode enabled, the machine monitors the torque on the shredder shafts to determine if there is material in the hopper or not. If there is not, the shredder throttles down to an idle while still turning the rotor shafts very slowly. When material is put into the hopper, the torque on the shaft increases and the machine throttles up to full rpm. So you don’t have to worry about your operator going on break or going to load a truck with the shredder running at full engine rpm. Check with your grinder or shredder manufacturer for similar software. On the grinder specific side of equipment operation, eliminating drag on your rotor or hammermill will reduce engine load and result in lower fuel use. For example, on a first grind or when grinding land clearing debris just for reduction, a precise product size is not necessary. Try using older tips and larger screens. By increasing the distance between the tip and the screen or the tip and the anvil, you will reduce drag, which will help you maintain rpm and keeps you productive. This example works best with upturn rotors and woody materials. For downturn rotors and hammer mills running stringy wood or palm material, this would not be a good option. In those situations, maintaining a tight tolerance at the anvil and bigger screens and greater tip distance afterward, works best. For a finish grind, this does not work at all, as you will create more fines in your product and production rates will suffer. Experiment a little when you have the time. You may be more than pleased with the outcome. Questions, Comments? Dave Whitelaw, Grinder Guy 813-421-2757, e-mail grinderguy@askthegrinderguy.com or visit www.askthegrinderguy.com.

Volvo from 6 ily holds the particulate matter and then incinerates it, further reducing emissions. This process is conducted without any loss of performance or operation. Producing between 161 and 173 hp, depending on the model, these three units provide high torque at low engine speeds. Middle weight Volvo wheel loaders As well as meeting the low emissions requirements of the legislation, the D6 engine also leads the industry in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability and noise. The production of torque and power at low engine speeds, combined with load sensing hydraulics, promotes work at a lower rpm, which in turn extends engine life, lowers fuel usage, and dramatically reduces noise. Fuel use and noise are also reduced, thanks to a hydraulically driven, electronically controlled fan, which increases fan speeds only when needed. Built to perform together These new engines are matched to drivetrain, hydraulics and lifting systems that are all designed and produced by Volvo for improved productivity, lower emissions, greater smoothness, easy serviceability,
and operator comfort. That’s not all — the L90G wheel loader also features a 23 percent increase in lifting force and 19 percent improvement in breakout force. The improvement ensures smooth operation and full buckets — resulting in faster cycle times and increased productivity. Load sensing hydraulics delivers power to hydraulic functions only when needed, eliminating unnecessary oil pumping. Fitted with high capacity axial piston pumps with variable flow, the working hydraulic pressure has been increased from 3,771 to 4,496 psi. These improvements provide superior control of the attachments and loading, as well as higher breakout forces and faster lift and tilt functions. Transmissions feature the exceptional Volvo Automatic Power Shift (APS) concept, which ensures the loader always operates in the ideal gear by sensing engine and travel speed, kick down, engine braking and other factors. Offering operators a choice of four gear-shifting programs, APS results in more efficient work cycles with lower fuel consumption and wear. Power is delivered to the ground through heavy duty wet

American Property Experts excel at biomass production by Gwenyth Laird Pernie
American Property Experts' tub grinder gets a workout. Near the end of the 20th century, the global community was becoming increasingly aware that the technological advancements of the past 100 years were taking a toll on the environment. As a result, federal and state environmental agencies developed
regulations and laws to help protect the environment for future generations. For instance, the passage of the USEPA’s Energy Policy Act of 1992 amended the National Energy Conservation Policy Act of 1978. It added water conservation and renewable energy

sources to energy efficiency requirements. During that time, it was becoming clear to Jason Thompson that renewable energy sources were going to become a viable in the new millennium. It was then that he saw this as prime opportunity to start a biomass recycling center. Thus, the creation of American Property Experts. American Property Experts is a comprehensive vegetative debris recycling facility that annually takes in assorted yard waste (18,000 tons), wood waste (3000 tons), root mat (2500 tons) and vegetative debris (24,000 tons). According to Thompson, the company has contracts with local municipalities, landscapers and homeowners from as far north as Richmond, VA to as far south as Savannah, GA. On average, they receive a couple hundred dump truck loads daily. Thompson explained, “We process all the wood debris at our 8.5 acre facility in Wilmington, NC. Here, we annually produce 35,000 tons of boiler fuel, 8500 tons of topsoil and 1500 tons of high quality mulch. The boiler fuel is shipped to several co-generation plants to make electricity. These include International Paper, which produces all their own fuel and sells the excess back to the grid, Craven County Electric, a county owned electric co-op, Primary Energy, a private energy production firm and Green Power, an energy producing company that converted an old coal plant to biomass.” Thompson added, “America Property Experts also provide land clearing, tub grinding and soil screening services.” Thompson chooses Morbark grinders In 2001, in order to process the wood debris,

Thompson purchased a Morbark 1300A Tub Grinder and a Morbark Wood Hog 5600 horizontal grinder. Because of his success with the Morbark equipment, he purchased a second 1300A in 2003. Thompson said, “I purchased the 5600 because it has a smaller safety zone (throw zone of debris) than a tub grinder. That allows us to work in closed systems. We find that its production rate is slightly slower, however.” He emphasized that the biggest reason for his decision to purchase the Morbark grinders was the relationship that he had with Morbark’s area representative, Danny Westmoreland, a member of the James River Equipment Dealership in Charlotte, NC. “In the 10 years I have owned Morbark grinders, whenever I’ve had a question, I could call Danny,” he said. “If I couldn’t get him I could Michael Stanton, the Southeast U.S. regional sales manager for Morbark, Inc. The communication has been suburb. That is tremendously important since the three machines I own are worth $600,000 or $700,000 each and represent 60 percent of my total equipment.” “Their demo experience was also very important to my decision to purchase Morbark equipment,” he added. “During their demo, the 1300A production rate was much better than that of our previous machines. Currently, a conservative estimate of our production rate for heavy LCID (Land Clearing/Inert Debris) is about 45 tons per hour. ” “The Morbark units have also proven to be financially efficient,” Thompson noted. “Our jobs are rated on efficiency per hour; in other words, what it costs us per hour to operate. That helps determine what I bill per hour. In the first year we owned the Morbark grinders, we had a 35 percent increase in return on investment. Another cost advantage is that our maintenance costs went from 18-20 percent of our overall costs to 7-8 percent with the Morbark machines. Basically, the Morbark units are sturdier machines for heavy duty land clearing grinding operations.” Thompson added, “The mobility of the machines also allows us to move off site easily. We have a dozen contracts with various landfills and private recyclers that don’t have their own grinders. Our machines go site to site and grind on a contract bases.” For more information on American Property Experts go their web site at www.americanpropertyexperts.com or call Jason Thompson at 910- 443 0876. by Gwenyth Laird Pernie Recently, the worlds of two successful businesses came together when American Property Experts chose Morbark grinders for their primary equipment needs. Jason Thompson, owner of American Property Experts, of Wilmington, NC was looking to develop his biomass recycling center and that is when he contacted Danny Westmoreland, now a member of the James River Equipment Dealership in Charlotte, NC. Today, Westmoreland relies upon a Morbark 1300A Tub Grinder and a 5600 Wood Hog horizontal grinder to get the job done. Morbark 1300A Tub Grinder The Morbark 1300A Tub Grinder weighs 74,580-pounds
with an operating length of 60-feet 10-inches and width of 11-feet 11inches. It has a CAT engine with 800 to 1,050 hp. The hydraulic full tilt tub has a 10-foot diameter and 57-inch deep walls with easy access to the 31 X 64-inch hammer mill system, which is constructed with a heavy duty 20inch diameter rotor and two piece laser cut rotor plates. The plates are keyed on a 7-inch diameter shaft with 7/16-inch bearings and 2-1/4-inch hammer retaining rods. There are two 16-inch diameter augers that discharge materials onto a 40 X 31-inch heavy duty belt conveyer after screening across 1-inch thick steel heavy duty split screens. Morbark Wood Hog 5600 The Morbark Wood Hog 5600 is
a mid-sized horizontal grinder, 42-foot 4-inches long and 10inches wide, weighing 74,000pounds. It has a CAT, Cummins or John Deere engine with horsepower ranging from 460 to 860 hp. The in feed opening is 56 X 48-inches with an 11-cubic-yard in feed hopper. The hammer mill is equipped with heavy duty rotors and steel heavy duty grates. The discharge system consists of two hydraulically drive aggregate grade conveyors. This Wood Hog works well on green waste, pallets, brush, stumps and other wood waste. The EEI Group now offers SOCOMEC’s latest breaker, the MDO 4000TS Thirty years of experience owning and running a demolition company have taught Roland and Zoya Jarl, owners of The EEI Group, to always be alert for the right equipment to do a job. This experience is what led them to establish a central equipment supply company, Enterprising Europa, Inc. (EEI) that could offer demolition contractors a wide selection of solutions for their project needs. EEI was already the importer and general distributor for all SOCOMEC products in North America, including the DMS medium light duty breaker, MDO medium heavy duty breakers, PDO Series crushers and SBV Series screening buckets. Now EEI is able to offer SOCOMEC’s latest addition, their 9,240pound breaker, the MDO 4000TS. The MDO 4000TS that was recently made available for export to North America, after an extensive one year testing program in European quarries. The
heavy weight MDO breaker range, now consisting of five models, is able to satisfy the demands of customers with excavators from 15 to 75 tons. These breakers reaffirm the traditional characteristics of SOCOMEC’s products: reliability, technical innovation and also their unprecedented 60 months warranty. In regards to the breaker’s inside structure, the tie rods have a new profile and an innovative tightening system, which gives them great elasticity and resistance. Moreover, the heavy weight MDO breaker range from 3500 to 12000-foot-pound shares, together with the light weight class DMS breaker range, the exclusive advantage to be able to remove the piston and the sleeves without having to loosen the tie rods. Constant, reliable breaker performance is assured due to an innovative system of hydraulic oil pressure control in the input line, while an automatic variator or a hydraulic control system changes the frequency of the blows, adjusting to the power requested for the work to be done. The piston has been the object of long, profitable study, and is equipped with a strong hydraulic brake able to avoid harmful blank firing to the breaker. The metal case of the
heavy weight class breaker range is built in high resistant Hardox steel, along with side guides in the lower part of the breaker and an innovative upper rubber pad which totally eliminates vibrations to the excavator boom. For underwater or tunneling applications it is possible to pressurize the stroke chamber. A new special dust proof protection on the lower part of the piston has been positioned to prevent the entrance of any impurity. “I’m very pleased to be able to offer this expanded breaker product line,” says Mr. Jarl. “It helps us offer a much more complete line of breakers. We want demolition contractors to come to us for equipment that solves their problems, for equipment that lasts. This line of heavy hydraulic breakers fits that description.” EEI started with the Gallmac Tool Carrier machinery line, then expanded to include Socomec Hydraulic Hammers, RockFrac fracturing mortar, CanAm Rock Drill accessories and most recently, the Trevi Benne line of attachments. With the addition of these products, EEI became the EEI-Group. EEI, based at 439 Rte 17 North, Mahwah, NJ 07430, can be contacted at 201-2360969, or e-mail Info@theEEIgroup.com.
The first MDO 4000TS that was sold in the U.S. was purchased by Homrich Wrecking from Michigan. Roland Jarl of Enterprising Europa proudly poses with the breaker to give a sense of scale to the photo.

Vermeer wins the Joseph L. Abbott Jr. award for the third time PELLA, IOWA — Vermeer Corporation was awarded the Joseph L. Abbott Jr. Innovative Product Award (New Installation Category) by the North American Society of Trenchless Technology (NASTT) at the 2012 No Dig Show, held March 12-15, 2012, in Nashville, TN. Vermeer won the award for its D36x50R Series II Navigator® HDD, equipped with the rock focused MAGnumT drilling system. The MAGnum drilling system uses rapidly rotating magnets of alternating polarity within the carriage assembly, which generates a high frequency percussive action to fracture and effectively bore through tough formations, including solid rock. This hammer technology was developed in collaboration with
FlexiDRILL, a New Zealand based engineering company, and is licensed for exclusive distribution in the HDD market by Vermeer. Not a dedicated rock drill, the MAGnum system can be disengaged by the flip of the switch, and the D36x50R Series II will perform as a conventional HDD drill. This versatility qualifies the drill for a range of ground conditions to help boost overall utilization. “Vermeer is humbled to receive this award from NASTT,” said Dave Wisniewski, vice president of underground solutions for Vermeer. “We spent several years developing this new technology. It is true innovation for tomorrow’s jobsite challenges.”

LuiGong forges relationship with Cummins to launch dealer certification program KATY, TX — LiuGong Construction Machinery is pleased to announce a new, strategic alliance with Cummins, a long term partner and supplier of engines for LiuGong products. The new alliance provides LiuGong dealers with the opportunity to become certified and authorized Cummins Service Providers. The goal for both LiuGong and Cummins through this partnership is to provide their joint customer base with en-
hanced customer service and support. According to Dan Collins, deputy general manager for Global After Sales Support for LiuGong, “This partnership was put into place to ensure that both LiuGong and Cummins have the after the sale structure in place to provide outstanding customer service and deliver maximum uptime to our customers. By creating camaraderie between the local Cummins distributor, who originally
certifies the LiuGong dealer and recertifies them annually, we’re able to streamline repairs to ensure that our customers’ equipment operates with as little downtime as possible.” Traditionally, a LiuGong equipment owner would need to take their equipment to their local LiuGong dealer for any warranty related service issue except those related to the engine. When an engine repair was required during
the warranty period, the customer or their LiuGong dealer would have to contact their closest Cummins distributor to perform the service. By becoming certified, LiuGong dealers will be able to work directly with a Cummins distributor to secure genuine Cummins parts to perform their customer’s required engine maintenance or repair. Not only
sonnel to the jobsite on our own plane to ensure he is up and running as quickly as possible.” It is this dedication to the customer that has enabled Company Wrench to grow from 1 to 12 locations in six years. The No. 1 Terex Fuchs equipment distributor award was presented to Company Wrench officials by Terex Construction Americas representatives Dean Barley, Chris Koch and Kristy Jennings in a ceremony held on May 1, 2012 at the distributor’s headquarters location in Carroll, Ohio. Joining Terex Construction Americas and Company Wrench officials were a host of local and state dignitaries, including representatives from the offices of Governor John Kasich and Congress-
man Steve Austria of Ohio’s 7th District. In addition to being named the top Terex Fuchs equipment distributor for 2011, Company Wrench received proclamations from the offices of both Governor Kasich and Congressman Austria. From a small initial territory representing Terex Fuchs material handlers, Company Wrench now offers sales and service support for multiple states in the Midwestern and Southern regions for Terex Fuchs. “This is a well deserved honor for Company Wrench,” says Chris Koch, divisional sales manager for Terex Construction Americas. “They are a top notch organization and one of our most dedicated distributors, not only to the product line but, more importantly, to the customer. We congratulate them on
their success.” Terex Corporation is a diversified global manufacturer of a broad range of equipment that is focused on delivering reliable, customer driven solutions for many applications, including the construction, infrastructure, quarrying, mining, shipping, transportation, refining, energy, utility and manufacturing industries. Terex reports in five business segments: Aerial Work Platforms; Construction; Cranes; Material Handling, Port Solutions and Materials Processing. Terex offers financial products and services to assist in the acquisition of equipment through Terex Financial Services. More information can be found at www.terex.com.

Terex from 15 pose built material handlers designed for the scrap, recycling and demolition markets. With its strong bent on serving these markets, Company Wrench immediately became a top performing distributor for the material handler line. “We took the same philosophy of 24-7 repair services demanded by the customer in the heavy wrecker business and adapted it to the scrap business for the Terex Fuchs line,” comments Gleckler. “We also offer a buy-back program as part of our support package.” “The biggest cost is when a company’s equipment is down, and we make sure we have a service technician to the jobsite the same day we receive the call,” adds Gabbard. “If a customer is in a remote location, we’ll fly the service per-

cation/s received, the dealer may complete maintenance only, maintenance and external repairs or all internal and external warranty repairs on the engine/s. Through this alliance, LiuGong and Cummins are able to assure customers that all LiuGong products powered by a Cummins Engine receive superior engine support. According to Fred Rideneur, general manager of Business Operations for LiuGong North America, this program is attractive on all levels, for owners of LiuGong equipment, for LiuGong deal-
ers and for the local Cummins distributor. “In the equipment business you need to live and breathe service. Any minute a piece of equipment is down, it’s costing the customer money. By establishing a partnership between the local LiuGong dealer and closest Cummins distributor, we’re making sure that we can service all aspects of our customers’ machines. If we can service them, we can guarantee them that we’ll be able to minimize any unplanned downtime. That level of

Composted mulch gets final screening before going to customers by Jon M. Casey
Donnie Bonovich, Compost Facility supervisor and David Bleeks, McCloskey representative from Commonwealth Equipment, talk about future considerations for VPPSA and the upcoming equipment needs for 2012 as the facility's McCloskey 733 Trommel is busy processing a row of finished composted mulch. windrow has cured for the appropriate length of time, we screen it with the trommel,” Donnie said. “The overs are returned to a compost windrow for further composting and the screened material is either moved to our sales area near the entrance to the facility, or it is stockpiled for future customer sales and direct shipment to large consumers. With this trommel, we can screen three tractor trailer loads of material in about an hour, if we need to.” Donnie explained that VPPSA consumers come from communities in Hampton, Poquoson and York Counties in Virginia. “VPPSA is a ten city and county solid waste authority,” he said. “Facility members include the Cities of Hampton, Poquoson and Williamsburg and the Counties of Essex, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex
and York. The Towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna and West Point are also members.” As we toured the facility, Donnie said that the first step of the process is the material is ground using a tub grinder. Then, it is placed into windrows that are several hundred yards long, eighteen feet wide and about seven feet tall. Over the next six months, the windrows are monitored as they cure. This is done to ensure consistency. During the curing process, temperatures in the stockpiled compost can reach 160 degrees. These products are cured for a minimum of three months. This curing process ensures that the material is weed seed, bug and pathogen free making it safe to place around a customer’s property. From there it goes through the tub grinder again,

When consumers head to the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility in Yorktown, VA for their composted mulch or specialty soil products for their landscaping projects, they are assured of a consistent, quality product. That is because the compost has been carefully screened with a McCloskey 733 trommel screener before it is sold to the public. In a recent visit to VPPSA, Waste Handling Equipment News had the opportunity to see the McCloskey 733 in action while VPPSA was preparing a stockpile of composted mulch for future sale. According to Donald “Donnie” Bonivich, the Compost Facility supervisor for VPPSA, all of the composted mulch goes through the 733 trommel as the final step in the composting process. “When a

which feeds the second grind directly into the McCloskey 733. This reduces an extra handling step of manually feeding the reground material into the trommel. During this screening process, the McCloskey 733 separates the material into the two available products, mulch fines and reground mulch. Once the material has rested, usually thirty days, the process is complete and the material is ready for sale, For the 2012 season, VPPSA offers four products for sale: reground mulch, mulch fines, compost and a soil blend. Since this visit to the VPPSA facility, Donnie tells us that they have begun coloring mulch with a newly acquired Diamond Z 1352BL tub grinder, and they will be offering colored mulch as part of their product line. This product was offered several years ago, but with the economy people were leaning toward the lower prices offered on regular mulch. With renewed interest, they will be offering it again. VPPSA is a member of the U.S. Composting and the newly formed Virginia Composting Council. For more information about the VPPSA compost facility, contact them at 757-898-5012 or for information about all of the VPPSA programs visit them online at www.vppsa.org.

McCloskey International’s 733 high performance trommel is second to none!

by Jon M. Casey It did not take long to see why the crew at the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) enjoyed having the McCloskey International 733 high performance trommel going through its paces on a recent afternoon at the Yorktown, VA Compost Facility. The 733, with its 7-foot diameter trommel screen and 225 hp CAT diesel engine, gives VPPSA the ability to screen up to 400-cubic-yards of dry, composted mulch per hour as they prepare for the 2012 yard care and landscaping season. With a virtual endless line of customers awaiting a load of freshly screened, composted mulch, Donnie Bonivich needs the assurance that the 733’s reliability provides when it comes to having product ready for his customers.
David Bleeks, the Commonwealth Equipment representative who works with VPPSA to keep the 733 serviced and ready to go, said that the volume of product that the high performance trommel is able to process, gives recyclers the kind of equipment that they need to meet the high volume demands of the busy spring landscaping time of year. He noted that the trommel’s 48-inch wide remote controlled radial stacker, gives the operator the ability to stockpile up to 1,200-cubic-yards of material from a single operating location. With the 180 degree rotating stacker, the need to move the trommel to additional locations is reduced, giving the crew more operating time in one spot. Additionally, with its 33-foot long drum, material is able to spend more time on the screen,
which allows for a more thorough screening of the finished product. One of the nice features that Bonivich appreciates in the production capabilities of the 733 is that he is able to screen about three tractor trailer loads of mulch in an hour if and when he needs to. He says that this kind of capability is especially helpful during the spring and summer when wholesale customers are doing everything they can to keep their composted mulch in adequate supply. COMMERCE CITY, CO — Atlas Copco’s new addition to its heavy hydraulic breaker line, the HB 4100, provides better performance and higher efficiency than the preceding model and weighs less. It has a service weight of 9,039-pounds (designed for carriers in the 88,185 to 154,324pound weight class), but is as powerful as other,
much heavier breakers. “The improvement is considerable,” explained Keith Becker, Atlas Copco product development specialist for hydraulic breakers. “We were able to achieve double digit percentage increases in power and efficiency while holding on to our known reliability.” Reduced weight and better performance
means that similar results can be achieved with a smaller hydraulic breaker. A lighter breaker also means that a smaller excavator can be used, saving both investment and operating costs. According to Becker, “The return on investment is many times greater than the pure acquisition costs. The reduction of total cost of
ownership conserves resources such as man hours and fuel. The HB 4100 does this with its durability and simple maintenance concepts.” Another improvement to the HB 4100 hydraulic breaker is a guide system that makes the breaker more stable and resilient. “Hydraulic breakers are ultimately subjected to use under the most ex-
treme conditions,” Becker added. “A new cover plate for the retaining bars offers more protection in the lower part of the breaker. This area receives the most wear and tear, especially on demolition jobs. The HB 4100 also has increased wear protection at the bottom of the case, which has proven its worth with all heavy hydraulic breakers
Atlas Copco's new HB 4100 hydraulic breaker. from Atlas Copco.” The new HB 4100 also includes the following standard features of the Atlas Copco heavy hydraulic breaker series: • The VibroSilenced system protects operators against noise and vibrations; • PowerAdapt switches the breaker off in the event of a hydraulic overflow; • AutoControl adjusts the blow frequency and blow energy to match the hardness of the material; • ContiLube TM II is an integrated, automatic lubrication system; • StartSelect allows the operator to influence the startup and shutdown behavior of the hydraulic breaker; and • The optional DustProtector protects the lower part of the hydraulic breaker from dust and rock particles. The HB 4100 hydraulic breaker is suitable for secondary and primary rock breaking in quarries, demolition of concrete, steel and pavement, trenching, dredging, tunneling and foundation work.

DC350T electric over hydraulic adjustable automated system features significant technological advantages over traditional tarping systems. ALGER, MI — Only the Roll-Rite DC350T incorporates the technology to eliminate the blind sides
of tarping a roll-off. Now the driver can stand away from the truck to tarp the container, affording complete 360 degree walk around visibility during the operation. An operator can avoid system damage, reduce tarp wear and tear, and quickly and efficiently
tarp the load — on multi-size containers — by simply pushing a button on the Roll-Rite wireless remote control. And technology wise, that’s just for starters. “The technology that drives hydraulic tarping systems hasn’t changed much in over 15 years.

Sure, it still works, but what are you missing?” asks Erl Henry, solid waste and recycling sales manager of Roll-Rite. “Now advancements in technology can help make your roll-off operation more profitable and safer for your drivers,” he added. The DC350 is so ad-

The advanced technology of the innovative DC350T adjustable automatic electric tarping system from RollRite offers many money saving advantages over traditional hydraulic systems. vanced it’s got four patents (and a fifth pending). And it’s uniquely different than traditional hydraulic driven roll-off systems in a multitude of money saving ways: • The system ships from the factory completely preassembled and prewired. It installs in less than half the time, on average, of a competitive hydraulic system, saving several hundred dollars of installation labor costs; • The DC350 is equipped with an innovative gear driven spring pivot and a patented sliding mechanism that combines 20-inches of travel with 180 degree arm rotation to easily tarp 20, 30 and 40-yard containers (up to 22-foot long); • Durable arms feature a three piece patented design made of specially treated, high strength polished aluminum alloy. Repairs are easy and replacement costs are about 66 percent less than heavy rust prone steel; • The tarp is wound onto a stationary spool by an electric gear motor that has been proven durable in over 15 years of high torque tarping service, and is so reliable it’s warranted for five years (non-prorated); • Efficient low volume
self-contained hydraulics slide the pivots and raise/lower tower, greatly reducing costly potential leaks and repairs; • All DC350 standard replacement parts can be shipped same day for overnight delivery, minimizing downtime; and • The DC350’s unique design makes repairs easier, faster and less expensive than traditional hydraulic systems. The mechanics of the pivot and slider are accessible for repair on the truck. The arms can be repaired or replaced without welding. And the tarp can be changed out in minutes, not hours, with no drilling required. “If you’re going to invest in the latest and greatest technology in your trucks, engines and rolloff hoists — the same technology advantage is also available for your tarping system, too. The DC350 was designed to be simpler to operate, maintain and install, and offer a lower overall cost of ownership than the hydraulic systems that have predominated the roll-off market for the past decade,” added Henry. For more information on the DC350, or to see a video of the tarping system in action, visit www.dc350.com.
