Hey Grinder Guy, my mechanics are costing me a fortune... I had to chuckle to myself because, this wasn’t really a question. Think of it this way, what would happen if you didn’t have any mechanics? It would probably cost you two fortunes. Service people are a necessity, not a luxury. I can take you to many operations that do not have a real service technician and you would realize that within five minutes of being there. These operations think nothing of calling an outside company for service and pay $100-$125 hr plus travel time and mileage. These costs adds up quickly, but it’s the downtime that costs you the real money. You own a shredder or grinder that costs $750,000 but you don’t have a service mechanic on staff to take care of it! Seriously?! According to Payscale. com, a diesel mechanic receives an average starting pay of around $30,000 a year, while a twenty year veteran will make up to $85,000 a year. Based on my experience, one big grinder repair will cost about $15,000; half the salary of that first year employee. It’s true mechanics are just like any other job category, you have good ones and bad ones and those who do as little as possible to get by. But, it’s the good ones you need to find and to train yourself. What’s a service technician really worth? “If you found (a person who can operate equipment) and perform mechanical repairs, he’d be worth twice as much,” said Steve St. George, owner of St. George Enterprises in Fredonia, NY. Grinder Guy from 2 operator for $12 per hour, St. George says he would pay $20-22 an hour for a person that is able to make the repairs instead of standing and waiting for a mechanic to show up. Finding that self motivated person is not easy, but it is worth every penny. A good mechanic “is worth his weight in gold” says Lenny Neal, General Manager of Kurtz Bros. - Central Ohio. Some companies offer additional benefits to help them find the right person. By providing a worker a pickup truck so they can carry some tools and work attire with them, a company is better equipped to find an operator/mechanic who is more likely to remain an employee. Today’s equipment with its computerized engines and fuel systems, requires that mechanics need to be more than just computer literate, they often need to be computer programmers. That is easy to teach. But that is not equipment troubleshooting. When it comes to keeping equipment running well all of the time, it’s the operator that smells antifreeze and goes to try to find the leak you can’t see that is the real mechanic. Those kinds of operators are fewer and farther between these days. Here are a few suggestions for finding the right person and still being able to afford it: • Find a retired and semi retired mechanic. Offer to have them work half days. Perhaps, just in the mornings to make sure equipment gets rolling and the operators get working. Or possibly, just in the evenings to make scheduled

repairs while equipment is parked anyway. For others, 1 or 2 days per week of service work with time to schedule repairs and order parts so everything is ready when they show up. • Hire a private equipment repair contractor. Most of these mechanics are Equipment Repair Masters. They are true mechanics. They can repair anything, suggest preventative maintenance, tell you when to sell a piece of equipment and look over a used piece you are considering buying. In Florida? Call Rick Dolk. Missouri? Send your mechanics for training or better yet, have your equipment dealers setup a training program for all your mechanics and do it at your shop. This not only helps your employees become better mechanics, it gives them a break from their daily routine. It allows them to grow as a mechanic and to become more valuable as an employee. The benefits of fabric structures as waste transfer stations Waste transfer stations are a prominent part of any community’s waste management system,

helping to reduce waste hauling costs and provide convenience to customers. When designing the site

for a new waste transfer station at a landfill facility, there are a variety of factors to consider. The

United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authored “Waste Transfer Stations: A Manual for Decision Making” to help landfill operators make the best decisions for their facilities. During the planning stages for a new waste transfer station, it is important to take into account the type of waste to accept, the types of customers to serve (public vs. private) and the site itself. When it comes to planning the structure to house the facility on the site, the following guidelines are recommended by the EPA: • Vertical clearances of at least 25 to 30-feet to allow collection vehicles to unload; • No internal columns or

The landfill facility located in Red Oak, Iowa was looking for a new structure to serve as their waste transfer station, but wanted a more cost effective solution than buildings typically used for this application. Dave Kratz, a major shareholder of the company, is responsible for overseeing operations, personnel, equipment and marketing at IWS. He was chosen as the person in charge of finding the company’s new structure and began to research the alternatives. Kratz states, “A landfill site takes in about 10,000 tons of waste per year and the cost of building a new landfill cell every three to five years well exceeds over a million dollars. It only made economical sense to choose a fabric building for the facility because it is a long term solution for a fraction of the typical cost.” He decided that a 65-foot wide by 65foot long Hercules Truss Arch Building from ClearSpan Fabric Structures (South Windsor,

Fabric in Action: Iowa Waste Systems Since 1996, Iowa Waste Systems (IWS) has specialized in providing collection, transfer, disposal and recycling services to customers in Iowa and southeast Nebraska. Their customers come from a wide range of industries, including commercial, governmental and residential. There are only three privately owned sanitary landfills in the state of Iowa, and

CT) was the most practical choice for his company’s needs. Besides being such a cost effective option, the company enjoys many other advantages over a typical transfer station building. Kratz explains, “The simple design of the building allowed for a more efficient and economical construction than that of other structures and has made the company much less costly to operate.” He continues, “Our cost of daily operation has dropped significantly since owning our fabric structure. We no longer have to cover the waste daily with dirt, we use less fuel, and we have been able to do business with two less pieces of equipment and operate with one less employee.” The fabric building makes their clients happier, too. “Our customers like being on concrete in an enclosed facility instead of being outside and dealing with the elements like mud, snow and wind. This makes the structure excellent for public relations,” says Kratz. He continues, “Even our neighbors have benefitted from the building. We have eliminated windblown litter because the waste is kept covered inside.” Kratz and IWS are thrilled with their choice of a fabric building. He concludes, “Our fabric structure is working out great and costs half of what a traditional transfer station would. I hope that this opens the door for more waste management facilities who still rely on the typical low volume, high cost landfills, to consider switching to fabric buildings.” Why Fabric Works for IWS Because IWS needed an economical, long-term solution to use as their waste transfer station, they looked beyond the conventional options and chose a fabric building. Mounted on a concrete wall for added height, the building has two 16-foot wide by 28-foot high doors and commercial waste vehicles are able to unload with ease. That capability, along with Recycle WV’s location, allows them to move material either north to Ohio and Pennsylvania or south to customers there, depending on market conditions. There are also several steel mills nearby in Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia. Bishop purchased two Sennebogen material handlers, an 830 M and an 840 M, to move material around the yard. He acquired them from Power Equipment Co., of Kingsport, TN. The 840 M has a two yard grapple, and typically feeds the Harris while the 830 M has a mag grapple, and is used for a variety of tasks, including unloading trailers and preparing material for the 840 M. Both of the Sennebogens are used forty hours a week. Their elevated cabs provide good visibility, which is particularly important when unloading full length trailers. Recycle WV also uses a Takeuchi TB1140 with a fixed grapple to pre-sort metal before it goes to the shredder. The newest addition to the operation’s equipment lineup is a Liebherr 586 2plus2 7-yard loader, acquired from Republic Crane in Charlotte, NC. Because of the loader’s hydrostatic design, Bishop said, “You really cannot spin the wheels on it.” It also weighs ten thousand pounds less than comparable loaders, and has what Bishop calls a “really neat design,” with a backward facing, rear mounted engine located over the tires. That positioning leads to a good balance on the machine and prevents the tires from spinning. What’s more, the air intake for the engine is located between the engine housing and the cab, which reduces the amount of dust that enters the engine. The site’s previous lead loader, a Volvo 180, is still in daily use at the yard as well. Recycle WV uses a Link-Belt 240 for other work,

Calbag Metals weighs scrap metal accurately and efficiently with rugged Avery Weigh-Tronix truck scale As the scrap metal industry relies heavily on

with many bulk metals bought and sold by the

pound — customers who sell scrap metal rely on

grade metals are weighed on the company’s floor scale to provide precise readings within 1-2pound increments. Calbag’s truck scale is used to double check scrap loads sold by dealers, as well as to determine the final weight of bulk scrap from roll off boxes typically weighing 20,000 to 50,000-pounds. The latter scale takes much abuse in the company’s scrap yard, from frequent use to heavy rain. When their truck scale was ready to be replaced, Calbag needed a durable solution capable of high accuracy and designed to meet their current weighing needs. “The 70-foot scale we were replacing was about 12 years old, so it had reached the end of its useful life, but we also wanted to lengthen the scale,” said Greg Will, operations manager at Calbag Metals. Calbag noted that

their buyers to deliver a fair price for all materials purchased. When Kenny Burgess opened Midwest Scrap Management in St. Joseph, Mo. nearly 40 years ago, even he could not envision the company’s tremendous growth and expansion. What began as a single man operation in a pickup truck in 1973 has turned into one of the largest scrap operations in the Midwest, employing more than 100 people. “It’s been a lot of hard work and long hours,” says Kenny Burgess, general manager of Midwest Scrap Management. This strong work ethic and customer service commitment has expanded the operation’s reach to about a 200 mile radius of its Missouri locations, serving customers in four states. Processing nearly 1,500 tons of ferrous and 30 tons of non-ferrous material per day, the company has notable accounts like Harley Davidson Manufacturing, UPS and FedEx.

A pivotal event in the company’s historic growth can be attributed to its expansion into the Kansas City market. “Kenny had plans to bring a high capacity shredder to this market,” explains Jay Young, scrap and recycling sales manager for Roadbuilders Machinery and Supply Co., Inc., a Terex® Fuchs equipment dealer. “Even though his competition said it couldn’t be done, Kenny had his sights on 59 acres of land ideally suited for a scrap operation.” Finding the Right Solution Before expanding to Kansas City, Midwest Scrap honed its scrap processing and handling practices into a model of efficiency. The St. Joseph branch experimented with different equipment solutions that would allow them to capitalize on the opportunities in the Kansas City market. Initially, the St. Joseph location began shredding

No. 2 material with a small shredder. However, it did not fit the company’s needs, so they got rid of it. After a short hiatus, Midwest Scrap invested in a much larger HS6090, 1,200 hp shredder in 2002. This proved to be the right fit to handle the inflow of vehicles at the St. Joseph yard, and it improved cash flow. “The income generated by the shredder gave Kenny the necessary capital to add the Kansas City location,” recalls Jim Summers, operations manager for Midwest Scrap. The St. Joseph location also ran a series of trials to find the right handler to keep up with its production needs. Unpaved, the yard in St. Joseph made the track driven Terex Fuchs RHL340 a good solution. “The RHL340 was the first hydraulic crane the company bought,” says Burgess. Midwest Scrap’s RHL340 was purpose built to withstand the challenges associated with scrap processing. It gave the operators a machine with a 41foot reach and a maximum lift capacity in excess of 31,000-pounds. “Performance was good with the RHL340,” comments Burgess. Its hydraulically elevated cab design improved loading and unloading efficiency at the yard. A dual circuit hydraulic system offered fast work cycles and smooth, precise machine handling for operators. Even though the tracked handler delivered solid performance, Midwest Scrap wanted to test a variety of handlers from different manufacturers, and Burgess admits he tried some because he could get a good deal. “Zero percent financing was attractive for one make,” he says, “but we were not impressed with the machine’s performance.” In all, Midwest Scrap experimented with three different makes and various handler models at the St. Joseph headquarters to compare performance against the Terex Fuchs handlers and to prepare for expansion into the larger Kansas City market. Burgess saw vast potential in the industrial property that other operations in the region overlooked. “He targeted the old Sheffield Steel/GSTC site,” says Young. “The property sat dormant for years before businesses started renting portions of the land. Kenny purchased 59 acres for the branch location.” With convenient rail and highway access, there was potential for this to be a high volume yard. Midwest Scrap appropriately installed a 350 ton per hour, 7,000 hp HS125125 shredder to process the influx

materials for its No. 2 shred. In addition to cars, “the shredder allows us to run up to 1.5-inch thick skeleton plate and rebar though it,” says Summers. This heavy steel would have otherwise required torch cutting. Today, the vital Kansas City location accepts and processes both ferrous and non-ferrous material. The branch supplies No. 1 and No. 2 shred, heavy melt, bundles, clips, turnings and non-ferrous products like aluminum and copper to its customers. Since 2006, Midwest Scrap has run more than 1.3 million tons of scrap through its HS125125 shredder. “In 2011, we processed and shipped on average 35,000 tons of scrap material per month, of which 25,000 tons is No. 2 shred,” mentions Summers. The company’s final ferrous products are shipped throughout the United States, and its non-ferrous goes to both domestic and international customers. The St. Joseph headquarters continues to be a full scrap operation, accepting both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. However, it has become a feeder yard to Kansas City for No. 2 shred. Non-ferrous material is still accepted, baled and sold through the St. Joseph location. Long Reach, More Efficient Midwest Scrap needed to select the right size and type of material handler to take advantage of the shredder’s capacity and high volume of material flowing into and out of the Kansas City yard. Engine and generator issues with some of the tested competitive handlers signaled an end to experimentation and standardization on one particular brand. “We started with Terex Fuchs,” says Burgess, “and we are back with Terex Fuchs. That says a lot about the handler.” One difference between St. Joseph and Kansas City, Midwest Scrap invested more than $2 million in paving the Kansas City yard with concrete. “Initially, we made the investments for environmental reasons,” says Summers. “However, we have found that the customers like driving on the paved surface better, and it has increased traffic into our yard.” It also made the prospect of purchasing Terex Fuchs material handlers on wheels attractive. Crews could more easily keep the concrete free of scrap debris, reducing the chance for tire damage. “It also makes getting from one part of the yard to another a lot easier than with a track machine,” adds Summers. Initially, Roadbuilders consulted with Midwest Scrap on handler needs and supplied Terex Fuchs MHL360 D material handlers to feed the shredder, load rail cars and offload and sort material from trucks and peddler traffic. “The MHL360s were equivalent in size to the other brands Midwest Scrap was using at the time,” comments Young. The 249 hp MHL360 D material handlers are equipped with a boom and stick combination that provides a 59-foot reach, 18-feet longer than the company’s original RHL340 handlers. This improves loading, sorting and stacking efficiency. The machine’s double row slewing ring design offers reliable performance during working cycles, even

A longer scale would allow a full truck to be weighed at once, saving the time and hassle of progressively weighing each vehicle axle by axle. Thus, Calbag sought a scale replacement with a longer platform to better accommodate larger trucks and roll off boxes — one that was also slightly wider to make it user friendly for drivers. “The old scale was narrow — it was 11-feet wide, with safety railing placed along the scale platform that consumed part of the working width. We wanted a scale that was 12 -ide and allowed us to use that full width during the weighing process,” Will said. “We also needed to make sure the scale featured load cells that could withstand side and lateral forces to handle our many types of trucks and roll off boxes.” The replacement that Calbag selectedthe Avery Weigh-Tronix SteelBridge IMXT truck scale uses the company’s Weigh Bar® electronic weight sensors to provide a low failure rate and resist errors due to the side, end or torsion loading common when utilizing roll off boxes. In addition, the scale platform features high strength, all welded steel sandwich constructionwith a heavy duty design that provides greater deck rigidity and minimizes deck deflection. The scale platform features a 15 year warranty, but it often provides a usable life of 25 years or more. “We needed a heavy duty scale platform to handle our increased business.

Even though a rugged load cell could handle this stress, we needed additional support for the deck to withstand heavy use,” Will said. The Avery Weigh-Tronix truck scale utilizes an 80-foot scale platform, and this additional 10-feet allows the scale to weigh approximately 10 percent more trucks using a single measurement, rather than axle by axle. The replacement also added a foot in width to the platform, making the scale easier to access. It is also accompanied by a unique railing design that ensures truck and driver safety while keeping nearly all 12-feet of the scale width usable. Mark Hudzinski, account manager at Avery Weigh-Tronix, worked with Will to provide a scale system that met all of Calbag’s specifications and was built to last. “The company calls it the U.S.S. Calbag,” Hudzinski said of the new truck scale. “The scale platform is designed with a substantial amount of steel in the weighbridge to withstand heavy rain and frequent use, and the load cells are well protected from environmental elements.” As the new scale would consume a greater footprint than the prior one, along with installing the scale, Hudzinski and his team of technicians were required to redesign the scale approaches. Space is limited in Calbag’s busy scrap yard, so all of this needed to be accomplished within a confined area while maintaining safety and ease of use. Their efforts made an impression on drivers. “They did an excellent job designing new approaches. Our truck drivers may not know about the heavy duty

Doosan DL420 wheel loader provides increased horsepower, fuel efficiency and reliability for a more complete fuel burn. The new auto idle feature provides additional noise reduction and fuel savings by reducing the working idle of the wheel loader from 950 rpm to a standby idle setting of 750 rpm when the machine in inactive for 10 minutes. The 775-cubic-inch engine features a high pressure common rail (HPCR) design with direct fuel injection, electronic control and four valves per cylinder. The high pressure common rail fuel system increases the efficiency of fuel delivery by increasing the pressure up to 34,000 psi. The increased pressure allows the injector to inject a finer mist into the engine, which results in a more efficient combustion that in turn produces more torque and improved fuel economy, less noise, lower operating costs and cleaner exhaust. Reliability Service intervals on the front lift arm pins have increased 500 percent from 50 to 250 hours, reducing operating costs and downtime. Tilt cylinder hydraulic hoses have been rerouted for improved hose reliability, better hose movement and improved visibility to the attachment. More new options for Doosan wheel loaders include a diesel-powered coolant heater to improve starting in cold weather or a block heater that warms the engine coolant before engine startup with an electrical heater. Comfort The DL420 is now available with optional electric steering to decrease operator fatigue during repetitive cycle operations on the jobsite. A joystick has been added to the left armrest that allows the operator to control the directional movement without having to use the steering wheel. A new door threshold design makes getting in and out of Doosan wheel loaders — and cleaning the inside of the cab — much easier. Interior cabin improvements also include a number of multi-function display panel upgrades on a centralized monitor that allows the operator to view comprehensive machine system information. The centralized monitor displays critical machine information — such as engine rpm, engine coolant temperature, fuel level, DEF level, machine warnings, and the transmission selected gear. A key exterior cabin improvement is the lower front side glass has been widened, providing improved visibility of operations. The DL420 — like every new Doosan machine — is covered by an innovative 48 hour parts guarantee. The program guarantees that if a “machine debilitating” part is needed, Doosan will deliver it directly to the end user within two business days or Doosan will pay for a replacement machine rental. WEST FARGO, ND — Increased horsepower, fuel efficiency and reliability are just a few of the enhancements to accompany interim Tier 4 (iT4) compliance on the Doosan DL420 wheel loader. This 5.5-cubic-yard wheel loader boasts a breakout force of 47,210pounds, a full turn tipping capacity of 35,310-pounds and a rugged design built for a variety of material handling applications — such as quarries, mines, road work and site development. Performance The DL420 offers operators the ability to set upper and lower limits for both the lift arm and bucket stop positions from inside the cab. This improves cycle times in digging and loading applications, while providing improved control of the lift arm and bucket positions. The new automatic reversing cooling fan can be set to run in reverse to assist in keeping the cooling system clean. The operator can select to reverse the fan via a switch, or it can be set to automatically reverse on a preset time frame. Each time the fan reverses, it will run in reverse for few minutes to clean the cooling system. This helps in dirty and dusty conditions to keep the machine running at optimal performance, using less power to cool the machine. This results in longer working hours and shorter maintenance time to clean the cooling system. For those requiring additional dumping capabilities, the DL420 is also available in a high lift configuration, extending the dump height 20-inches above the standard DL420, to 12-feet 1-inch. As an alternative to the standard limited slip differential, the DL420 offers an optional hydraulic locking front differential. Based on ground conditions, the operator can choose to lock the differential manually with a floor mounted foot switch, or allow the machine to automatically engage the system, providing increased driving power when one wheel spins or loses traction and improving machine performance when navigating tough terrain. Another common option for the DL420 is a torque converter lockup clutch. This enables the machine to climb grades easier and faster, increasing productivity as much as 20 percent in certain stockpiling applications, while also providing a five gear transmission instead of the standard four gear setup. Power The DL420 horsepower has been increased to 354 with a six cylinder diesel engine that has been optimized for use with selective catalyst reduction (SCR) and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to comply with iT4 emission regulations. Engines with this configuration are optimized to reduce particulate matter (PM) by operating at higher combustion temperatures and to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) with exhaust after treatment using SCR technology. Additionally, engines using SCR systems offer increased fuel efficiency ¢w as much as 16 percent on this machine ¢w due to the engine optimization, which allows
