A truck scale system combines a rugged scale platform typically constructed of steel or reinforced with a concrete deck-load cell technology and a digital weight indicator to record, display and, at times, communicate data from scale transactions. The load cell converts force measurements into an electrical signal read by a connected weight indication system. The unique design of some load cells allow it to act like a cantilever, suspended on one end and fixed on another, thereby eliminating common errors associated with end loading, side loading, vibration and torsion effects for enhanced accuracy and reliability. For a basic in and out truck scale system, a driver simply stops the

The vehicle then exits the scale to be loaded or unloaded. Afterward, the vehicle returns to the scale so that an outgoing weighment may be acquired. The system then prints a ticket displaying the weight and driver/truckload data, and all collected information is stored in the indicator’s memory or, in some cases, wirelessly transmitted to the recycling center’s main computer database — a significant advantage in remote applications. For additional process efficiency and cost reduction, operators can automate material collection and weighing by incorporating an indicator into a control console adjacent

Highland understood that in order to keep up with this demand, the entire operation hinged on their ability to streamline the collection process and data management. The company needed to capture information on the weight of the waste aggregate, the specific materials, customer information and the weight of the recycled material produced. Maintaining accurate records was crucial to Highland, not only for customer satisfaction, but they also had to provide accurate quarterly returns to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA). Highland turned to Avery Weigh-Tronix to design and install a truck scale system to weigh incoming and outgoing materials and store information on the indicator. The system allowed them to not only collect data but also to analyze process efficiency. Highland Recycling can then print an invoice with the truck scale ticket and can store the information for accurate and efficient invoicing at the end of the month. The collection and reporting of precise weight data enabled the company to established successful and profitable aggregate recycling business in its own right. Polk County Recycling Center Polk County’s Recycling Center handles roughly 3,500 to 4,000 tons of outgoing materials annually. Originally, the company was calculating the weight of loads based on average weighments secured periodically from an off-site truck scale. This method of computing weights was, at best, an unreliable estimation. The company needed a more accurate and efficient way to track their materials. To meet both these needs simultaneously, Polk County implemented an Avery Weigh-Tronix truck scale and Model 1310 unattended scale console. This offered a convenient solution that allowed drivers to enter any and all necessary weight and load information into the console from their vehicle with pushbutton ease. By en-

New conveyor belt cleaner for challenging conditions Neponset, IL — A new powered brush cleaner for conveyor belt applications has been introduced by Martin Engineering, a rotating design that removes material accumulation and dust in difficult applications. Well suited to belts that use raised elements (cleats, chevrons, ribs or lugs) to assist in carrying material, the Martin® Brush Cleaner is an economical solution that provides high performance, energy efficient operation, even in conditions involving sticky ma-
terials or stringy fibers, such as coal and biomass. The economical 230/460 volt, three phase electric motor provides successful cleaning with minimal power consumption. A 1 hp motor powers the units for 1842-inch belts, and a 2 hp motor drives the cleaners for 48-96-inch belts. The motor can be operated in either direction, and the unit can be installed on the left or right side of the cleaner, depending on the plant's requirements. Constructed of durable

After the landmark saw mill was decommissioned, the owners sold component parts off at auction. Following the auction, Sunshine went in and completed the demolition of all the structures at the 20 acre site. Rich said, “We removed, processed and recycled multiple structures made of block, wood and steel at the site. In addition, about 80 percent of the site was paved with 6-inches or more of concrete. We removed and recycled all of that, along with other concrete formations including a 25-foot x 25-foot x 10-foot thick concrete slab that stood underneath a log crane.” (This job can be viewed on YouTube at Sunshine Recycling’s channel.) Sunshine’s commitment to the environment Sunshine Recycling is located on a 50 acre site paved with 8-inches of concrete that was crushed, processed and recycled at Sunshine using Terex equipment. Rich noted that the job was made much easier with the use of their Terex Fuchs MHL 360D material handler, the Terex Power Screen MetroTrac and the Powerscreen® Chieftain 1400, which has a recycling capacity to process up to 220 tons per hour. Drivers then continue from station to station to unload their materials. In most cases, an operator unloads the automobiles, scrap material, industrial waste, etc. with a Terex Fuchs MHL 360D material handler. Then, the empty truck is weighed as it leaves and the customer is paid according to the American Metal Markets monthly report. Meanwhile the scrap material is processed, graded and prepared for shipping. Sunshine Auto Salvage Approximately 30 acres of Sunshine’s facility is home to their auto parts recycling business. “Our site has an import and a domestic division that contains approximately 3600 cars. BOMAG offers rear rotor recycler/stabilizer models KEWANEE, IL — BOMAG’s 79-inch rotor width asphalt recycler/soil stabilizers feature improvements to key drive train components. Both the MPH3622 and MPH364-2 are powered with a six cylinder, 360 hp Cummins QSM11 water cooled diesel engine. Other features include the use of a double reduction planetary rear drive system, which is propelled by a pair of axial piston, variable displacement motors. The drive system on previous models used a ring and pinion differential assembly. The new hydrostatic system demands less horsepower than

Upgrades to control systems and changes to electronics have also been implemented. The MPH362-2 is a rear wheel drive machine, while the MPH364-2 boasts four wheel drive to enhance performance on severe grades or in difficult traction conditions. An Automatic Power Adjustment System (APA) automatically adjusts forward travel speeds to match the application
pacity. Maximum mixing depth is 14-inches with the stabilizer rotor; and • For stabilization applications that require working at greater depths, a deep mix stabilizer is available with a maximum rotor cutting depth of 21-inches. Each rotor — recycling or stabilizing — is 79inches wide and offers rotor speeds of 135 and 150 revolutions per minute. The recycler rotor features 168 bullet shaped cutting teeth, while the stabilizer rotor offers 70 paddle shaped teeth. The teeth are strategically positioned for uniform material pulverizing, sizing
and mixing with minimum vibration and shock load to the rotor and drive components. A simple cutting tooth replacement process has an easy tap in/tap out design. A unique hydrostatic relief system regulates shock absorption and eliminates the need for shear pins and other torque limiting devices in the rotor drive. This system reduces the possibility of damage to the equipment, minimizing downtime. The MPH362-2 and
MPH364-2 feature single lever control for travel and steer-assist braking. For operator convenience, console gauges monitor rotor drive pressure, forward travel pressure and other key engine components. Operator stations are configured and positioned to provide a high degree of comfort and visibility. An angled seat and ergonomically designed control station simplify operation and provide the operator with an optimal viewing posi-
tion. For operator protection, ROPS with seat belt is standard. FOPS/ROPS is available as an option. Daily maintenance is reduced to a simple visual inspection of key engine details — such as lube levels, hydraulic fluid, engine coolant, etc. — and a general walk-around inspection. Hey GrinderGuy, do I really need a belt scraper? Unless you like losing money, you need a belt cleaner. Belt cleaners keep material from building up on belts which, if not done, will cause the belt to track off center. What happens then? Well, if the belts tracks far enough off center, the rubber skirting does not contain material any longer and rock, stone, dirt or other debris will fall off the conveyor and make its way into the tail pulleys. This causes: • Belts to track even further off center, which can make the edge of the belting rub on roller supports or the frame of the conveyor; • The belt to start wearing the edge
and will start to tear at the belt splice; • A worn splice to make the belt start to loosen and your belt to become loose on one side. That will make belt adjustment very difficult. It also lessens the life of your belt; • Large rocks to get into the tail pulley and punch a hole into the conveyor or in the belt splice; and • Material to build up around bearings, causing failure. In any of those examples, time and money are lost. Along with all those possibilities, if material builds on the surface of conveyor belting, the belt will track off center and start causing problems as well. So, with all these potential issues,
owning and maintaining a belt cleaner will save you time and money. Most belt cleaners are made of rubber and press against the belt as it passes by, scraping material from the belt. Others are made of plastic or even steel. Some have automatic adjustment while others need some weekly maintenance. This is easily done. Applications where a scraper cannot be used are chevron belts or belts with cleats. Because of the raised rubber on these belts, a scraper is not the accessory of choice. In these cases, a brush type cleaner works best. By adjusting the brushes so that the bristles are just touching the belt, this literally sweeps material from the belts. One note of
concern with the brushes is that these do not work well in wet sticky materials. Frequently, the bristles fill with material and plug up. Recently, I saw an advertisement for a self-powered brush cleaner. This brush cleaner was powered by a 1 or 2 horsepower motor which turns the brush opposite the direction of the conveyor. This seems to me that less pressure would need to be used which would extend the wear life. Terex Woodsman name changes to Terex Environmental Equipment FARWELL, MI —Terex Woodsman changes its name to Terex Environmental Equipment (TEE) reflecting their expanding market and customer base and aggressive product development program for 2013. This name change takes effect immediately. For Bobby Gigliotti and his Pittsburgh Demolition, Inc. crew working at the McCandless Crossing retail development in McCandless, PA, the transformation of the former LaRoche College dormitory complex into the site of a future CineMark 12 screen, all digital Theater Complex and parking area, is just another day on the job. With the future development of this suburban Pittsburgh, retail complex that will include 53 residential units, several national chain retail and eating establishments, a Doodle Bugs! Children’s Center, a Lowes and a 119 room Home2 Suites Hotel by Hilton, the 130 acre accumulative project is scheduled to be completed in four stages with the CineMark Theater planned for opening in late 2013. “We are making good progress,” said Gigliotti, company vice president and project manager and excavator operator, during a site visit in fall 2012. “As we take down the structures, we sort out the bricks and concrete and the steel. We recycle the scrap steel and it goes out via Jeffery S. Bronowicz trucking.

General C&D material goes to Ohio via Iron City Trucking, and we crush the brick and concrete into aggregate as site prep fill.” As we arrived on site, the crew was lifting a skid steer loader to the second floor level to make moving material from within the building, easier. The remainder of a two story dormitory unit and a side building were in the final stages of being torn down, with a third building already demolished. Within a few days, the rest of the site would be razed and the backfilling could begin. According to Chuck DeNinno, president and founder of Pittsburgh Demolition, Inc., the recyclable concrete and brick material will be crushed with a Kohlberg-Pioneer 2640 jaw crusher. “We like using the portable 2640 because it has plenty of power to do the job,” he said. “We have the ability to take long pieces of concrete and feed them into the jaw, and it just keeps crushing without hesitation.” DeNinno said that he has been in the C&D business for 27 years. “I was employed as a civil engineer by Allegheny County,” he told WHEN. “I had been responsible for letting contracts on C&D work and as I watched others and how they were progressing in that industry, I saw the need for a company that used more modern technologies to do demolition more efficiently. I knew I could do a better job. So in May 1986, I started out doing demolition jobs with rented equipment and have never looked back!” “We work with union crews out of the local halls and we have enough equipment that we can be working three projects at the same time,” he said. “Since we first began we have done some major projects in the Pittsburgh area including two power plants that we took down in 2009. We recently had three projects going on, the McCandless Crossing project, one in Blairsville, PA and a third one in Upper St. Clair, the former Consol Energy Headquarters Building, a four story office building, with each floor covering as much area as one and three quarters football fields. That building is down and we are currently crushing there.” Chuck recalled one of the most memorable and challenging projects was the recent completion of a project on Brunot Island, an island that is home to a Reliant Energy electrical power plant. The island, located in the Ohio River, on the western side of
Pittsburgh, just west of the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela Rivers is only accessible via footbridge and has no road access for car or truck travel. Since all of the materials and equipment that needed to move to and from the island would need to be transported by barge, the overall project was daunting. “We were hired to take down five, 1.5 million gallon fuel storage tanks on Brunot Island,” he said. “The tanks were no longer needed to store fuel for the existing power plants, since they have been converted to gas fired units. They wanted to remove the tanks to make room for more substation equipment
