Dear Patrons,
Ensure quality productions in the future by pledging your support to Lees-McRae College Performing Arts and Summer Theatre.
What a season! You asked for these shows and we’re happy to bring them to you. As we look back over the last twenty-eight years, we are full of pride and sentiment. Although I retired from teaching this year, I’m going to pretend I’m still young enough to kick up my heels with the young folks and continue bringing you terrific shows to come. Let me tell you what’s new: You probably have noticed that you can now get Season Tickets and that you can save by purchasing them! We do, however, have to charge for exchanges because we are charged by our ticket company and can no longer absorb those expenses. Glad to make exchanges; we’ve just got to add a $5 fee to a group ticket and $3 to an individual ticket. Note the time change! Our evening performances will begin at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. Most of our audience members prefer the earlier evening. Come to Banner Elk, have an early dinner, enjoy the play and get home at a decent hour! I LOVE hearing from you; your ideas for shows, changes you suggest and all that. Feel free to contact me at P.O. Box 128, Banner Elk, NC, 28604. Sincerely,
July 1, 3, 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. July 3, 6 and 7 at 2 p.m.
August 5, 7-9 at 7 p.m. August 4, 8 and 10 at 2 p.m.
In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap... until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal. This sharp-edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.
You remember the plot. You love the characters. You know “the song.” It’s no less than the stage adaptation of one of the most celebrated and beloved films of all time. 1920s Hollywood is the setting for this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy about the early days of sound film, when many a movie studio found itself scrambling to salvage the career of its chipmunk-voiced silent picture star.
“Chicago” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse Music by John Kander | Lyrics by Fred Ebb Based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins
Janet Barton Speer, Ph.D.

In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a deathdefying finale. A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure! The 39 Steps, was Broadway’s longest running comedy, and played its 500th performance on Broadway, May 19th, 2009.
