PDA: A warning sign for future cardiovascular issues

By Susan Tulino Novant Health UVA Health Systems

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 8.5 million people in the United States, including about 20 percent of people over the age of 60, have peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

PAD is a common circulatory problem in which a buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries — known as atherosclerosis — causes them to narrow and reduce blood flow to a person’s limbs. Most commonly, symptoms of PAD are felt in the legs and can include:

• Muscle pain in thighs, hips and calves after walking or climbing stairs • Fatigue or heaviness in the legs • Sores on the legs or feet that don’t heal • A cold feeling in one foot • A change in the color of the legs • Hair loss on legs or feet • Slower growth of toenails

“Patients are often referred to us after they notice pain or feelings of heaviness when they’re doing an activity,” said John Hardy, MD, cardiologist at UVA Cardiology, a department of Novant Health UVA Health System. “Once PAD is diagnosed, we evaluate their risk factors and assess for coronary disease, which is commonly related. About 50 percent of patients with PAD also have coronary disease.”

Risk Factors

PAD can be exaggerated or worsened by risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), history of heart attacks or stroke and high cholesterol. People who are overweight, of older age orwho may have limited physical activity are also at heightened risk for developing PAD.

The good news is that there are many things a patient can do to control risk factors and lower their chances of developing PAD. According to Hardy, if the patient is a smoker, one of the best ways to prevent PAD is to quit smoking immediately. Exercise and a healthy diet are also effective ways to reduce PAD risk.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can be exaggerated or worsened by risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), history of heart attacks or stroke and high cholesterol. The good news is that there are many things a patient can do to control risk factors and lower their chances of developing PAD.

Treatment and Prevention

But hope is not lost if PAD is diagnosed. Treatment options include:

• Walking — Improves exercise capacity by stimulating blood vessel development to naturally bypass blockages.

• Medications — Taking medication for high blood pressure or cholesterol can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. Some medications can improve blood flow in the legs and pain-free exercise capacity.

• Angioplasty/Stenting — A minimally invasive procedure in which a wire mesh tube is inserted to prop open an artery and improve blood flow to leg muscles.

• Bypass grafting — A surgical procedure in which a vein from another part of the body is used to “bypass” and reroute blood around a closed artery.

“PAD can be stabilized,” said Hardy. “It’s not a death sentence, but it should be a warning sign that lifestyle changes are needed. If the patient is willing to make healthy lifestyle changes, we can slow down the progress of the disease. Visiting a cardiologist for an evaluation and proper diagnosis is an important first step.”

“It’s Never too Early to Talk Suicide Prevention” — Preventing suicide requires a public health approach in which prevention efforts take place on the societal, community, family and individual level.

COMMUNITY NEWS Culpeper to begin cleaning up grave sites Culpeper Town employees are beginning spring clean-up in preparation for the upcoming holidays and summer season. They are filling graves, seeding, fertilizing and trimming trees and bushes as necessary. They will begin clearing graves of all non-permanent decorations along with items prohibited by town code.

The town administration requests that before Monday, March 16, owners or family members remove all nonpermanent decorations from their graves that they wish to salvage or re-use. There are many memorial wreaths and other floral decorations that have weathered, and these need to be permanently removed. Also, items that are not specifically permitted by town policy must be removed.

As a reminder, only two floral arrangements may be placed on a grave at one time and should be securely anchored or in a nonbreakable vase or container; floral displays attached to stones are encouraged and permitted all year. Withered, faded and unsightly flowers will be removed. No floral arrangements are allowed within the moving aisles.

The following items are strictly probihibited. • Glass containers. • Garden, commercial or advertising flags. • Fencing and borders. • Wood chips. • Decorative rocks. • All other decorative items not listed above.

Cemetery lot owners wishing to install permanent items such as stones, flags, benches, statues or plantings must apply for and obtain a permit or permission from the town prior to installation.

How much waste do you think actually accumulates in your household ? The average person produces about five pounds of trash each day while a family produces nearly 17.4 pounds. It is important to understand the impact trash and waste has on the environment because it contributes to the build up of pollution and spread of harmful pollutants. Due to these high amounts of waste, encouraging practices of waste prevention and recycling is highly recommended. There are many alternative ways to cut back on the amount of waste produced. For example, instead of using paper towels, invest in reusable towels that can be washed, or instead of plastic straws, use metal straws that can be found in any grocery store and even on Amazon.

After analyzing and tracking the amount of waste accumulated in our households, it really opened up our eyes on how much waste our families actually produced. The No. 1 item that generated the most waste was plastic products such as water bottles, bags, cups and straws. Between both of our families, we wasted about 15 water bottles per day which became about 156 particles of plastic polluting our environment.

Research has shown that 80 percent of plastic water bottles do not even get recycled; 38 million plastic bottles go into landfills each year in America alone. For plastic bags, both households wasted about 16 to 20 bags per week. Annually across the globe, about one trillion plastic bags are used, which is nearly 2 million bags being used every minute. As for plastic cups and straws, roughly 12 to 19 accumulated per week in both households.

Research data has shown that the world uses 500 billion plastic cups every year, and it is estimated that 500 million straws are used everyday. By continuously using plastic products each day, we are contributing to the build up of waste in landfills and oceans. This harms our society because plastic waste releases harmful chemicals into our soil, water sources, and our ecosystem.

To continue with our low waste lifestyle study, we now plan to use alternatives to reduce our amount of waste. We will do so by using reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags, reusable water bottles instead of plastic cups, metal straws instead of plastic straws, etc. Also, recycling will be better incorporated into our households.

As we plan to change our lifestyles, we challenge you to do as well. Consider the amount of waste building up in your household and how using some of these alternatives can help to reduce waste production. By making these changes in our lifestyle now, we are promoting a healthier, safer, and more efficient environment for the future.

Healthy Culpeper hears horrors of human trafficking

By Pat Fitzgerald For the Culpeper Times

Human trafficking, which is making headlines more and more in the D.C. suburbs, isn't just a problem contained Culpeper's northern neighbors.

"The most common myth is, human trafficking is not happening in my community," Joni Langevoort, a volunteer with Just Ask Prevention, told a gathering of the Healthy Culpeper Community Partners last week at Culpeper Baptist Church. "The fact is, it affects every corner of the United States," she said. The Just Ask Prevention program, which began in 2013 after police in Fairfax County learned that people who were victim of sex trafficking and getting into trouble were never asked the cause of why troubles were happening.

Its founder, Bill Woolf, who is now works as the director of anti-human trafficking efforts at the Department of Justice, started off as the only detective in Fairfax County who was investigating trafficking.

He came across one victim who had talked to plenty of school, sub

own making. It was in my head. It was my fault.'

"Human trafficking just wasn't on the radar a few years ago," Langevoort said.

She said Just Ask Prevention is "sort of the education piece in the fight against human trafficking."

Langevoort told the story of a Fairfax County mother who had lived there for nearly 40 years when her teenage daughter became a victim of sex trafficking after meeting a 20-year-old MS-13 gang member after a night out with friends at the movies.

The 20-year-old, who was also a sophomore at her high school, eventually gained her trust and friended her on Facebook — before things went down a dark and twisted road. She tried to end their “friendship,” but it just ended up in physical abuse during and after school. Eventually, MS-13 gang members would come to her window at night and threaten her at gunpoint. When the parents were away one time, gang members entered the house and threatened the girl’s 8- and 9-year-old brothers, saying that they would kill the parents and rape their 3-year-old daughter if she didn’t come with him.

The teenage girl was taken to a house near Burke and gang-raped

Even after that ordeal, the gang took her again four months later and trafficked her across Northern Virginia. Ten days later, she was nearly sold for $10,000 to a trafficker before a bust happened at a Dunkin’ Donuts.

“Every 30 seconds, a child or teen is sold in the U.S.,” Langevoort said. “It’s a $32 million industry.” On in five children in school will be approached by a trafficker, she added. Langevoort and Culpeper Master Police Officer Mike Grant both agreed that people not only need to look for trafficking warning signs — which can range from everything to slipping grades, to teens coming home with unexplained gifts, to outright intimidation and kidnapping — and take them seriously.

“The quicker we can get down and find out what’s going on, the quicker we can save some of these children. They’re intimidated themselves,” Grant said. “You’ve got to pay attention.

“They may only have a split second to get out of a situation. They may just hand you a note, they may just walk by real quick and say I need help,” he said. “Take it seriously. I’m not saying get yourself involved or get in the middle. I’m saying pay attention. Where were they? Who are they with? If they contact you outside, maybe you can see a car, get a tag, anything. And then call us right away, or the sheriff’s department or the State Police. Just don’t think, ‘maybe there were kidding.’ They need help.

“If they ask for help, take it seriously. We’ll figure it out if they were just fooling around or if they need help,” Grant said. “Because I can tell you, gangs can be very intimidating. MS-13 is a very violent gang, but all these gangs are. They will intimidate you, they will intimidate your family. Get us involved as quick as you can, and we will help you through that process.”

Since its founding in 2013, Just Ask Prevention has educated more than 1,000 community organizations such as Healthy Culpeper and reached more than 100,000 young people, Langevoort said. Honoring the Mother of Beulah Baptist Church

On Sunday, members and guests of Beulah Baptist Church of Rixeyville, celebrated Deaconess Sandra Lee Washington as the Matriarch of Beulah Baptist.

A position of notoriety, the Mother of Beulah is also a ministry of serious responsibility as noted by the Reverend Dr. Kenneth Lee Pitts, pastor of Beulah Baptist Church. Deaconess Washington was recognized for her special gifts and dedication to the ministry. Most importantly, Deaconess Washington live her life for Christ always walking in love and witnessing to everyone about the goodness of our Lord.

The Beulah Baptist Church thanks her for accepting this obligation and challenge.

Sunday also afforded the members and guests of Beulah the opportunity to witness a stellar performance by Cleo Kay Coleman.

Coleman is an 88-year-old historian. Beulah was the recipient of a historical account of the life of Mrs. Harriet Tubman. In Coleman's oration, she explained that Harriet was a slave who never learned to read or write and received visions from God that guided her survival during the tough times of slavery.

These visions along with the lessons she learned from her father, the Quakers and abolitionists helped her to free over 300 slaves. She fought against those who sought to continue slavery while taking slaves as far as Canada to

be free.

Tubman's determination and strong will became an obsession to free as many slaves possible. Harriet always consulted God through prayer before making any trips in the underground railroad to free these slaves.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans. She became a scout, a spy and led a section of the Union Army.

Coleman recounts that Harriet always carried three things: her bible, a walking stick and a pistol. Affectionately, Mrs. Tubman was known as a "pistol packing woman" who believed that God didn't mean for any human to own another human being.

As the program ended, Pastor Pitts mentioned it is good for us to read and research our history and don't always rely one source to teach us. We as African American people have made important strives and contributions to our society.

What another great day to be at Beulah Baptist Church, “the little mega church” that sits on a hill on holy ground with a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

EVHS student wins $15,000 scholarship from ACT

A senior at Eastern View High School won the student lottery from a national college testing company. Amir Shariatmadari received a $15,000 scholarship and a $5,000 technology package from the ACT, an organization that provides college-placement testing to more than 1.8 million high school students each year.

This year, the organization chose 14 students at random to receive a scholarship and technology package. Seven of those students, including Shariatmadari, were awarded the prize after taking the ACT.

“When I found out I won the scholarship, I had trouble believing what had happened,” Shariatmadari said. “I wasn't even aware of the scholarship existing. [My counselor] called me over saying that the ACT people wanted to survey me [about] my experience taking the ACT. Instead, I found out that I won a scholarship.”

According to the ACT, winners must use the scholarship funds at any Title IV-eligible postsecondary school in the United States.

The technology package included a laptop computer, tablet, monitor, keyboard, mouse and other computer accessories. Winners also received a gift card to help fund any other technology or software needs at college.

Eastern View Principal, Dr. Felix Addo applauded the announcement.

"Amir is a great student and deserving of this scholarship,” Addo said. “It couldn't have happened to a better student. We are on cloud nine and over the moon for Amir". Along with the scholarships, ACT officials are also awarding $65,000 this school year in flash giveaways to students preparing for the ACT test through ACT Academy, the organization’s free online learning and testing practice program.

Shariatmadari, who has applied to several colleges and universities, plans to major in computer science. He is the son of Reza and Manijeh Shariatmadari of Culpeper.

In January, ACT officials and EV staff were on hand to present Shariatmadari with the scholarship.

“I just want to thank God, my family, and faculty and staff at Eastern View High School for all the blessings, opportunities, and support I have today,” Shariatmadari said. “I wouldn't be here without it.”

Everyone's family at Southside Coffee and Gifts

By Jeff Say For the Culpeper Times

Tanya Rixey Hale hopes people feel at home when they come into Southside Coffee and Gifts.

The new coffee shop, located at 211 Southgate Shopping Center, welcomes visitors in like family — and for many they are.

Hale laughs when she says, “we’re kin to just about everybody.” She calls herself “the last of the true Rixeys,” dating her lineage back to the early 1700s in Culpeper County. Her great great uncle is Eppa Rixey and the village of Rixeyville was built on her family’s land. Through the years, her family “threw more girls than boys” and that led to a lot of extended family. Those family members now frequent the new coffee shop, which specializes in customer service along with quality ingredients.

“I do want people to come in here that they feel like they’re walking into my home,” she said.

She gets the highest quality coffee possible, from a roaster in Atlanta who is on the Jamaican coffee board and he can get Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. She is able

“I like that I was able to go in, meet the roaster and a lot of our beans are single origin,” Hale said. “My beans are consistent.”

So is Southside’s customer services. Coffee fanatics will recognize Hale and Katie Eversol from Star

bucks, where they made numerous connections over the years.

“Katie and I both came from Starbucks and the one thing that changed was that we couldn’t do that one-on-one with a customer,” Hale said. “In here we use the Ghirardelli chocolate. We extract the flavors correctly. It’s as pure as you can get. The nice thing about it is we can offer a lower price because we don’t need to use as much.”

Another highlight is her use of pea milk as an alternative to milk. The derivative from yellow peas is high in protein so it still foams up like whole milk.

She says she can make just about anything and rattled off a series of syrups — orange, raspberry, mojito and caramel just to name a few. Apple cider and hot chocolate are family friendly staples that she said are hot sellers. “We’re trying to make this place a family oriented place where we can bring our kids,” Hale said. “We’ll have events outside when it gets warmer.”

Nestled in the shopping plaza near Gold’s Gym, she said it was important for her to offer a quality coffee shop and meeting place on the southside of town.

“That is important, I heard mothers always say that I dropped my kid off at the United Methodist Church and then I have to go all the

way across town to get my cup of coffee and then I have come all the way back as I work at Farmington,” Hale said.

She opens early, Tuesday through Sunday at 7 a.m., to make sure commuters and the like are able to get their cup of joe. She bakes scones, prepares pastries, gets the soup on for the day and starts making sandwiches early before she heads out to her full time job at J.D. Newman.

“I have my own job because I need health insurance,” Hale said. “Once Obamacare came in, I had to go find another job. We owned our own business (Hale Auto Service), and we had our own insurance but once Obamacare came in I went to work.”

“When I worked at Starbucks, I knew everybody’s birthday and this always came out of my pocket but on Mother’s Day we would buy flowers, this is in my eyes still a small town,” Hale said.

“To me, this is my home.”

Love's Kitchen brings Bourbon Street to Culpeper By Pat Fitzgerald For the Culpeper Times

Just off Davis Street in Culpeper is a taste of Bourbon Street.

“I always wanted a different taste in Culpeper,” said Roger Hoffman Jr. of Love’s Kitchen at 106 W. Cameron St.

“I think a Southern New Orleans-style restaurant was something that would catch Culpeper by surprise,” he said. “We have our Ruby Tuesday, we have our chains and all those things, but there’s nothing really Southern that’s here. I’ve been wanting that ever since I was in high school.

A 2004 graduate of Culpeper County High School, Hoffman was a high school basketball player and has had his own successful barbershop — the aptly named Successful Hands — for a little more than four years in Culpeper.

Hoffman sees Love’s Kitchen as just another way of giving back to his mother, his community and God.

“My mother, Virginia Hoffman, she’s a part of the business and she always wanted her own restaurant PHOTO BY IAN CHINI Love’s Kitchen, which incorporates the New Orleans theme, serves up everything from fish and oyster po’ boys, shrimp linguini and blackened chicken penne to shrimp and grits. For those who want something not so Southern, there’s also Philadelphia-inspired cheesesteak sandwiches. “I think a Southern New Orleansstyle restaurant was something that would catch Culpeper by surprise,” says owner Roger Hoffman Jr. (left). Taking care of your vision starts early Contributed Article At Eye Care of Virginia, our optometrist in Culpeper takes the time to get to know each patient and their unique vision and eye care needs. By understanding your eye care history, personal medical history, and family vision history, we are able to better tailor our services to meet your specific vision needs. This includes anticipating potential eye care and vision problems before they develop. For example, if one or more of your parents or grandparents has been diagnosed with glaucoma, you are at increased risk for potentially developing this condition.

African Americans over the age of 40 and Hispanics over the age of 60 are also at increased risk. If you fall into a high-risk group, our optometrist may recommend regular testing for glaucoma, which can be done through an eye pressure exam. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States and while it cannot be prevented if it is diagnosed and treated early, it can be successfully controlled.

Dr. Miles W. Press has been serving the greater Culpeper and King George communities for some time now. He has practiced for over four decades as an Optometrist. Licensed by the state of Virginia to practice optometry, Dr. Press’s background includes anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology, uniquely qualifying him to diagnose a wide range of eye health issues, including the diagnosis of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, and hypertension. He licensed the technology to Bausch and Lomb and set up their facilities in Rochester and Waterford, Ireland. His company was sold in 1986 to Revlon which is now owned by Novartis.

www.EyeCareOfVirginia.com 2016• 2017• 2018 Welcoming New and Former Patients Hoffman said of his Mom’s influence on the restuarant.

He noted that an aunt, Tisha Johnson of New Orleans Bistro in Fredericksburg, also helped him and his Mom come up with the idea of serving Southern comfort food in one of America’s top-10 small towns.

Love’s Kitchen opened at the end of September and Hoffman notes that business has been “going good. I feel truly blessed.”

“For being on this backstreet off Davis Street, we get a lot of guests from the courthouse, from the sheriff’s station [and] downtown Davis Street,” he said. “It’s kind of surprising because we’re kind of off course a little bit. The traffic here is good.”

Hoffman also said, “The word of mouth is going really good.”

At his Successful Hands barbershop, Hoffman asks his customers if they are saved or not. “I’m in the ministry, in Winning Souls for Christ,” he said, adding: “We have a hall of fame wall over there.”

But at Love’s Kitchen, the focus is on the food.

“We’ve been getting a lot of good feedback,” Hoffman said. “We’ve got a great staff and we’ve got great cooks — some of the best in Culpeper.”

And while he’s just getting start- ed, Hoffman said one of these days he’d like to give back to the community eventually by having times at the restaurant to serve the local homeless population — especially around the holidays.

Hoffman said it’s all part of God’s vision for him. “He said this place is going to be a place of love.”

Love’s Kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
