The Eleven Frisian Cities Where in the world are cities smaller than villages? In Friesland of course. Our cities get the title not from their size but from their historical significance. They are the cities of dreamers who show that you don’t have to be the biggest to be noticed, and the doers who prove that you don’t have to be the richest in order to chase your dreams. We’re small and they’re big, and that is just fine.

Holding an Elfstedentocht (the elevencities ice-skating tour) is becoming increasingly rare. The last time this 200-kilometre race on natural ice was held was in 1997. But practical as the Frisians are, they just created a new Elfstedentocht. Not connected by ice, but by the sparkling waters of fountains.
International top artists in unique collaboration with residents
For this project eleven of the world’s leading artists were linked to the eleven Frisian cities and their residents. Together they sought out local stories and suitable locations. This unique collaboration is reflected in the unusual designs of the fountains.
Cultural heritage as a meeting place
Just as in earlier times, when everyone met at the old lime tree, the eleven fountains have now become a central meeting place. This new cultural heritage is an unmissable destination, not only for residents but also for tourists. The eleven fountains and their cities are always accessible and can be admired by bicycle, car or coach.

Water, forests, mud flats, peat polders and lush meadows: you won’t find so much diversity anywhere else but in Friesland. This diverse landscape has been taken for granted for centuries and is in danger of disappearing into infinite grasslands. This means that the smells, colours, and sounds associated with the landscape and with Friesland will also disappear. The King of the Meadows civic initiative believes that this must not be allowed to happen. The group evokes the meadow bird landscape using sympathetic, creative and sometimes confrontational performances, concerts and experiences. The Friesland Museum of Nature brings the king of the meadow to the fore in 2018 with the special Grote Grutto Theatre. During this exhibition, which is ideal for children, you take on the role of the black-tailed godwit, experience its world and test your senses.
M.C. Escher is one of the most famous artists from The Netherlands. What many people don’t know is that he came from Leeuwarden. The Museum of Friesland will showcase a large-scale exhibition of his work in 2018. A journey through Escher’s life is created using more than eighty early and late original prints; a three-dimensional biography where you get to know him personally and follow his artistic development from technically skilled graphic designer to world famous artist. Follow Escher through his physical and mental travels. The locations where he stayed were a major influence on his art. From the dreary flatness of The Netherlands during the first decade of the 20th century, to the sun and mountains of the Mediterranean. Back in The Netherlands, Escher incorporated all these experiences and impressions into complex, mathematical images and impossible worlds. The iconic works that made Escher so famous and loved, form the climax and end to the journey. Made possible thanks to ING and De Haan Advocaten & Notarissen

Would you like to discover something surprising? Something silly, striking and colourful? Put Drachten on your to-do list in 2018. The place where the new art movements of De Stijl and Dada found their way a hundred years ago. This happened thanks to a friendship between architect and painter Theo van Doesburg and two brothers from Drachten: Evert and Thijs Rinsema. The special Museum Dr8888 and the Van Doesburg-Rinsemahuis celebrate the legacy of these cultural movements inside and outside the museum walls. A good reason to throw a party: Museum Dr8888 and the Van Doesburg-Rinsemahuis will celebrate the legacy of Dada and De Stijl in many different ways in 2018.
The Made in Holland exhibition explores the development and dissemination of ceramic techniques, styles and products, with the Netherlands as a focal point. Dutch ceramics has been known around the world for centuries, but its origin is rarely in the Netherlands. Ceramics from abroad was processed here into something new, successfully created and then exported to other countries. Everyone knows Dutch Design, which is also extremely popular outside the Netherlands. This phenomenon has a long tradition. From Delft Blue to Art Nouveau, Dutch manufacturers have produced beautiful ceramics and enjoyed worldwide success with them for centuries. The exhibition not only includes the most beautiful objects, but also explains how Dutch producers incorporated foreign influences for their own success. 2018.nl/en/madeinholland
Community is... creating a huge work of art together. That was the thought of artist Dirk Hakze. He invited hundreds of international artists to work together on his project from May to September 2018. A gigantic colour spectacle will arise in Sloten in 2018. A huge triangle of 233 metres per side, created by 400 artists who together will create 499 panels, set up in the shape of a triangle. Each panel will contain a unique work of art, painted by the participating artists. They are free to make what they want, as long as they do not use black. Eventually all the individual works of art together form one big, colourful whole. A coloured field. A Colorfield Performance.

The Wadden:
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Afsluitdijk Wadden Center
Sand in your underpants, reading the newspaper in wind force 4 and drinking cocktails in the dunes. You don’t have to go to the Caribbean for a sense of freedom. You can find it here in the Frisian front yard, also known as an extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Wadden. Note: not suitable for couch potatoes, boxset binge watchers, landlubbers, speed demons, city slickers, Sunday drivers, homebodies and people who don’t like nature.
The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center will be constructed at Kornwerderzand. This is where we will tell the story of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage site, the Fish Migration River, the renewed, future-proofed Afsluitdijk and the IJsselmeer. The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center is not limited to a traditional building containing an information center. It is a total experience which includes components that make Kornwerderzand and the Afsluitdijk a point of interest.
The Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2009. This means that the Wadden Sea is on a par with world famous nature areas such as Yellowstone Park in the United States, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The foundation of this success is the many years of good collaboration between the countries along the Wadden Sea.
Starting point for a wider visit For example, the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center will be the starting point for a visit to the Casemates Museum, the navigation locks that could be widened, the discharge sluices which need to be renovated and the possible Fish Migration River. Kornwerderzand is also one of the main gateways to Friesland.

Sense of Place an art route full of nature, culture and stories How can you make something as beautiful as the Wad even more beautiful? Joop Mulder, former director of the Oerol Festival, knows how. The landscape in the North is unique. It has a rich history and beautiful nature. The Sense of Place projects make these unique treasures visible or even tangible to a large audience. Some art projects have already existed for a while and receive new attention through Sense of Place, others have been specially created for the project. A special ribbon of more than 25 innovative, large-scale works of art and special landscape architecture will run along the entire Wadden Sea coast, from Den Helder to the Dollard. Sense of Place goes beyond 2018 and is continuously developing. Go to sense-of-place.eu/en for the latest information about the programme.

The whole city of Harlingen will have a nautical atmosphere during The Tall Ships Races 2018. After two exciting races, eighty beautiful sailing ships from all over the world will finish in this Frisian harbour city. The crews of the ships are special - trainees from different countries aged between 15 and 25 who have become familiar with the sea and with sailing on traditional vessels, accompanied by the permanent crew. A beautiful example of European exchange. The historic ships will remain in Harlingen for four days and form the backdrop to a spectacular show – with literature playing a major role – with more than 200,000 visitors expected.

IEPEN MIENSKIP PROGRAMME (open community)
The Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018 programme is about more than major, eye catching projects. Hundreds of initiatives about, and created by, communities, large and small, by Frisians and non-Frisians, show a commitment to dream, to act and to dare to be different. Because you can sit in front of the television and watch the world around you change or turn it off and, together with your neighbours, make your environment and the world just a bit more beautiful. This programme is about people who seize the opportunity to create something beautiful with their neighbourhood, their village or their acquaintances. Remodelling a vacant supermarket into a village centre, tackling neglected woodlands near the village, community theatre, festivals, sporting events, symposia, cultural routes and dozens of other events. Scattered throughout the province, thousands of people are working to improve their environment, on a small or a large scale. Villages such as De Hoeve, Beetsterzwaag and Burum have got involved with LeeuwardenFriesland 2018 to organise beautiful things together. For example, people who have been bothered by pollution for years have seized the initiative and are using this year to develop projects that highlight this problem. People from throughout the province are getting together in discussion and becoming more aware and more proud of their environment.

Find a box and take a seat right in the middle of an orchestra with hundreds musicians. Listen to the overwhelming sound of all those instruments. Watch how they, along with dozens of dancers and actors, depict the story of Conference of the Birds. Be amazed by over hundreds of hafabra-musicians, led by composer Sytze Pruiksma and in collaboration with the Noord Nederlands Toneel theatre company and Club Guy & Roni. Conference of the Birds is a story about nature, culture and leadership.
With more than seventy acts, the area morphs into the most magical and sustainable festival in Europe during Welcome to The Village. National and international top acts from the music, art, innovation and theatre worlds, help us celebrate and build upon the world of the future, a world that works. A festival the way it’s meant to be, but with an additional and distinctive element: we work hard to find solutions for the future during the DORP innovation project and later at the festival site itself. The idea stems from the notion that if a new idea or prototype works during a festival, it should also work in the ‘real world’.
The area where visual arts manifestation Into Nature: Out of Darkness takes place, on the border of Friesland and Drenthe, has three very different landscapes where humans have examined their relationship with nature for thousands of years. The exhibition is located right in the centre of the Colonies of Humanitarianism (UNESCO World Heritage site) and showcases works by international artists. Together, these locations depict the tension between nature and culture, dark and light, control and freedom. It also gives us the chance to reflect on the Anthropocene: the Earth is so saturated with human presence that nature and culture can no longer be separated. These special places around Frederiksoord, and the resulting artistic interdependence, make Into Nature: Out of Darkness a venturous and exciting must-see art event.

In Friesland skûtsjesilen (sailing with historical flat bottom boats) is one of the most beloved events in Friesland. Every year during the northern summer– holidays, over a fortnight, eleven races are sailed by fourteen skûtsjes in order to win the SKS championship. Skippers and their crew do their utmost to gain the much wanted champions pennant and a beautiful challenge trophy: the Sulveren Skûtsje. It’s all about the honour of a town, a village or a region. Starting with the race on the Pikmar/De Wide near Grou, via De Veenhoop, Earnewâld,Terherne, Langweer, Elahuizen, Stavoren, Woudsend and Lemmer, the competition is decided on the Snitser Mar near Sneek after a fortnight’s sailing. The Skûtsjesilen event is part of the European Sports for All Games. It is largely free to visit, though some places may charge a small fee.

Mention Friesland, and you think of outdoor sports. Fierljeppen (pole jumping), skûtsjesilen (regatta sailing) and keatsen (handball) are all inextricably connected with our province. Many European countries have their own regional and often unknown cultural sports and that is what the first European Sports For All Games is all about. Slovenia introduces us to pandolo, the Finns show us Finnish baseball, the British are sending a disabled martial arts team and the Italians play lancio del formaggio, where cheeses are rolled through the streets. Athletes from Spain, Portugal, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Denmark and Greece show us their national and regional sports. An incomparable sporting event that is the starting point of the Games: five days of demonstrations, contests and tournaments throughout Friesland, culminating in a big party.
There will be a roaring cacophony of language around the Oldehoofsterkerkhof and the Prinsentuin in 2018. The oldest working planetarium in the world is on the living room ceiling of a lovely canal house in Franeker. Between 1774 and 1781, Eise Eisinga built an accurate moving model of the solar system in his spare time. He was a wool comber by profession, with astronomy as a hobby that got out of hand. At the age of 15 the young Frisian-born Eisie even wrote a book about mathematics, and two years later he wrote another one about astronomy. Eise’s Planetarium still shows the current position of the planets. The planets in the planetarium move around the sun at the same time as the real planets: for example, Mercury takes 88 days, the Earth
a year and Saturn takes over 29 years! The planetarium runs on an impressive machinery of wooden hoops and discs, with ten thousand hand-forged nails serving as gear teeth and it is powered by a pendulum clock and nine weights. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is more than a planetarium. The museum houses an extensive collection of historical astronomical instruments and also focuses on modern astronomy. There are continuously playing documentaries in the film room, and you can learn all about the universe in an interactive exhibition.

De Kreake in Húns has undergone a real metamorphosis over the past three years. A small, abandoned farm turned into a vibrant new centre. A place of vegetable cultivation and responsible food production. Artists, designers, farmers, artisans and architects from all over the world come to Húns to work with artist Claudy Jongstra and her partner Claudia Busson. They create beautiful objects with local raw materials and bring together art, food, farming and

THANKS!
Tige tank! The packed LF2018 programme has many partners. The LF2018 team thanks all the residents of Friesland, producers, financers and others involved in realising Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018. You’ll see them in this newspaper, mostly as an organiser or a sponsor. But even more organisations have worked behind the scenes to create a successful 2018. We stand on the shoulders of these giants, without whose valuable feedback and help we would not have created such a fantastic programme. This list is a selection of these, mostly community, partners.
