BREAKFAST This is my favorite meal of the day. I’d go to The Mission in North Park for their mouth-watering French toast, pancakes and rosemary potatoes, or to Eclipse Chocolate Bar & Bistro32 for their small plate brunch treats, herbal tea and a salted caramel.

BREAKFAST We’d kick off the day with pour-over coffee at Roast Coach26 or Coffee & Tea Collective24, and then breakfast at Influx60. We like the comfortable, neighborhood vibe at the one in Golden Hill. And we always like to check out the local music calendars on the wall while we wait in line.

LUNCH On Sundays, Tiger!Tiger!84 has delicious vegan doughnuts. And they always have my favorite sandwich in town – a mouth-watering, mushroom lentil patty on house made focaccia.

LUNCH The Linkery has a killer deal for lunch and beer during the week. On the weekends, pizza and beer at Blind Lady Ale House72 is always a good choice.

DINNER I love Eritrean food, and the best place in town is Asmara. Their veggie platter comes with several small dishes on injera to share with someone who you don’t mind getting messy with. For an out-on-the-town experience, Starlite18 is a must. The décor by Bells & Whistles, locally sourced ingredients and the best craft cocktails around would be enough to turn a visitor into a fullfledged San Diegan. BAR For craft beer, Tiger!Tiger!84 Craft cocktails, Starlite18. For a fun bar with great drinks and a side of music and dancing, Whistle Stop99.

DINNER El Take It Easy87 is definitely our spot for dinner. We love the local sourcing, sustainable meats and fresh seafood. Their Baja-inspired menu is always interesting and the cocktail list is the most underrated in the city. BAR On Fridays, there’s no better way to start the weekend than happy hour at Whistle Stop99. Then we’ll cruise over to Hamilton’s75 for a beer. The Lion’s Share10 and Seven Grand91 have made it into our heavy rotation of watering holes. They’re both spots you wouldn’t expect to find in SD – and we like that.

If you only had 24 hours to show a friend the best of urban SD, where would you go?

besides the weather, why do you remain in San Diego?

A curator recently visited some artists in San Diego. She told me later how impressed she was that we all knew each other, and that everyone she visited gave her a name of another artist she should meet. It was very different from her experience in LA. There’s a sense of community and support that you don’t find everywhere.

I came to San Diego in 1990 to attend Point Loma Nazarene University. After seeing a friend’s photos of the oceanfront campus I was fixated. I’ll never forget arriving and heading to Sunset Cliffs. The first big swell was like a scene from a movie. I skipped all my classes and sat on the cliffs all day.
