BREAKFAST I love to start out weekend mornings with brunch at Monello47. I always get the Monello Benedict. I substitute the prosciutto for tomato (I’m a pescatarian) and with a side of roasted potatoes, it’s perfection. It might be the best-kept brunch secret in town. I probably shouldn’t be telling people!

BREAKFAST I would take them to Hillcrest’s Great Maple 8 . Its house-made brisket is tasty. You can’t miss the Great Maple donuts. They also have a sick Bloody Mary. It’s just a fun spot for breakfast. After indulging ourselves, we stroll the nearby farmer’s market and see what goods they have.

LUNCH Saturdays I grab an iced latte from Influx70 and stroll through the Little Italy Mercato. You can sample fresh sea urchin and tamales while stocking up on produce for the week. Everyone who comes to visit can’t believe this amazing place comes to my neighborhood every Saturday.

LUNCH Ironside 26 in Little Italy. It has great oysters and some of the best clam chowder in town.

DINNER No week would be complete without a meal at Prepkitchen13 Little Italy. The food is comforting and classic, yet modern and inventive. It never gets old because the menu is constantly updated to reflect the seasons. BAR I almost always prefer nice wine to cocktails but I change my mind when visiting Ironside26. Paul Basile’s interior design really transports you to another world. At first, you might not notice the wall of piranha heads but once you do, it’s mesmerizing.

DINNER We’d head down to Cucina Urbana6 in Bankers Hill and have some tasty snacks. I really like the chicken liver mousse and house-cured meats. You can’t go wrong with a pizza and some pasta. It’s just a feel-good downtown spot. If I can, I love to sit at the bar. Really fun social environment. BAR My favorite bar to take people to is Polite Provisions82 in Normal Heights. It’s the best looking bar with the best cocktails in town. You have cocktails on tap or punch bowls which are always cool with groups. Next door if you get hungry, you can soak up the booze with some snacks from Soda & Swine17. And they let you bring the food back in to Polite Provisions. You can’t go wrong!

Growing up, it had a lot of neighborhoods settled by European immigrants - lots of Italians, Irish, and Polish, and a lot of Catholics. High school sports is huge, as is pizza, spaghetti, and beer. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SAN DIEGO? The job brought me here. I was living in Atlanta, Georgia as a freelance writer and public radio producer. KPBS was hiring an arts producer. I applied and got the job. I’d never been to California and I didn’t know anyone when I moved here. Packed up all my stuff and my dog and rolled across the southern US watching the landscape open up. It was amazing.
