It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Glengarry Highland Games. 70 years have come and gone since Games President, Peter MacInnis and The Rt. Hon. W.L. MacKenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada opened the first Games in 1948. The Games were the realization of a dream that Mr. MacInnis had, a dream to bring a day of piping, drumming, dancing and heavyweight competitions to Maxville. What began as a one day event with 8 pipe bands, 50 dancers and a caber toss has evolved into two full days with up to 60 pipe bands, over 200 dancers and a full slate of Heavyweight contests. This dream has benefited not only the village of Maxville, but Glengarry as well, bringing a lavishly colourful spectacle into the lives of thousands. In recognition of this year’s milestones, our 70th anniversary and Canada’s 150th anniversary, we have added a Heritage Village where you will be able to revisit Glengarry’s past. Local museums, historical societies, re-enactment groups and archives are providing exhibits dating back to the first Glengarry settlers. I would like to thank all exhibitors and committee members for the enormous amount of work that they have put into this project. I would also like to thank our directors and volunteers, our Patrons and our Corporate and Government sponsors, local service clubs and you, our guests, for joining us this weekend. Thank you all for your support as we celebrate 70 years of proud Scottish tradition. Enjoy your time in Glengarry, and my best wishes to everyone for a good Games. Anne Stewart President - Glengarry Highland Games

THE GAMES WELCOMES WILLIAM JOHN RODERICK LIVINGSTONE AS THE 2017 GAMES GUEST OF HONOUR

PRESIDENT AND GUEST OF HONOUR

CEUD MILE FAILTE – WELCOME

Bill Livingstone, was born in Copper Cliff, a mining town near Sudbury in northern Ontario. He is a graduate of Laurentian University and of Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. Soon after being called to the Bar of Ontario, Bill opened his own law firm in Whitby, Ontario and practiced in the Medical Malpractice field until his retirement in 2013. He has been married to Lillian for 51 years and still calls Whitby home today. Bill began his piping career with the Copper Cliff Highlanders Pipe Band, lead by his father, Bill Sr. Growing up, Bill received bagpipe tutelage from his father and from several of the art’s most legendary names both in Scotland and Canada. He has achieved numerous awards, capturing almost every major prize available in both light music and piobaireachd. He has made several solo recordings, six pipe band recordings and written two collections of music. As Pipe Major of the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band of Toronto from 1981 to 2010, Bill competed at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland for 27 consecutive years. In 1987, he and his band made a live recording at a concert in Northern Ireland, aptly titled ‘Live in Ireland’, that is considered by many to be the greatest pipe band recording ever made. His band went on to win the World Championships that same year, becoming the first time ever that a non- Scottish band took the prize. With Bill at the held, the 78th Frasers won the North American Championships at the Glengarry Highland Games 13 times. Bill was one of the first North American solo competitors to join the competitive circuit in Scotland and one of the first non-Scots to win the Highland Society of London Gold Medal. He holds the distinction of being the only person in history to have led a Grade One band to a World Championship and to have won a Clasp for piobaireachd at the Northern Meeting in Inverness, Scotland (1981 and 1984), the two pinnacles of pipe band and solo competitive success. He is one of only two pipers to have won a Highland Society of London Gold Medal and lead a band to win the World Pipe Band Championships. Bill continues to be actively involved in competition as a piper with the Grade One Toronto Police Pipe Band and he is currently in high demand as a teacher and adjudicator around the world. He has recently released his memoirs, Preposterous: Tales to Follow.

The Glengarry Highland Games is pleased to sponsor an area especially for young children (Wee Bairns) to enjoy and spend some fun time. The area will promote Scottish traditional music and events that young children will be able to enjoy and participate in, both Friday and Saturday. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children or take a break in a nearby tent that overlooks the area. All the events will be under tents in a treed area with adjoining facilities. Drop by for a few minutes or spend some quality time that will give your Wee Bairns some treasured memories of the 2017 Glengarry Highland Games.

In 1939, with war clouds gathering in Europe, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth undertook a one month cross-Canada tour to reinforce Canada’s ties with Great Britain. The tour was an enormous event, attracting huge crowds along the way. All was set out in a 195 page itinerary. Mackenzie King’s personal secretary observed that the PM “insisted on having virtually every aspect of the tour submitted to him for his decision.” He went on: “This was precisely the kind of operation where the “ fuzziness” which derived partly from his own nature and partly no doubt from his bachelor state was often carried to extreme limits.” The royal party included a staff of 29: the King’s page and 1st and 2nd valet, five footmen and for the Queen two dressers and a host of ladies-in-waiting. The Royal train was twelve cars long and yes, there was a Glengarrian on board - Theresa Moloney, a secretary to a Canadian senior official, and the granddaughter of John Cameron, a Lochiel pioneer. On its way to Ottawa from Montreal on the CPR line the train passed through Vankleek Hill near midnight on the 18th of May and stayed overnight at Carlsbad Springs, where the train was guarded by local veterans of the Great War. After unveiling the National War Memorial in front of 10,000 war veterans on Sunday morning the Royal party set out on, what was for Glengarrians, the most important leg of the tour. The train left Ottawa on the CNR line and headed east on its way to Toronto, bypassing the Ottawa-Kingston line entirely, and catching the Montreal-Toronto line at Coteau Junction. A four minute service stop was planned for Alexandria but no assurances were given that the King and Queen would make an appearance. Passing through Maxville the Royal visitors were greeted by a cheering crowd of 1,000. The national media reported that when the gleaming blue and silver train pulled into Alexandria at 2:41, over 8,000 were waiting just west of the station to catch a glimpse of the King and Queen. The Glengarry News estimated that never before in its history had Alexandria seen so many people within its limits as the population swelled to four times its normal size.

WHEN ROYALTY CAME TO GLENGARRY Written by Allan MacDonald

Visitors came in large numbers from every town and village in the district while the near countryside and the town proper were almost devoid of life. The Royal couple appeared on the platform of their car, flowers were presented, conversation took place with veterans and all were spared a formal address from the local dignitaries. And speaking of dignitaries, The News remarked on the presence of John D. McRae, the local MP, who “made no effort to seek a privileged place, being quite content to remain just one of the crowd.” Keeping a watch over the cheering crowd were five provincial constables, six CNR officers, forty extra police hired by the town and as many RCMP, aboard the Royal train, who took up positions when the train came to a stop. Five pipers from the county entertained the Royal couple and their names merit a mention: Angus Duncan Angus Katie MacDonald, Angus Cameron, Roy Jimmy Ranald MacDonell, Donald Kippen and Peter McInnes. In the end, it was a eight minute stop which easily surpassed what Cornwall was accorded - just a slow-down - and the displeasure of Kingston, where a planned eight hour stop was reduced to forty-five minutes. So there you have it - “when Royalty came to Glengarry!”

TO

REASONS

CELEBRATE

In 1948, when the first Games organizers decided to revive the ancient Scottish traditions, little did they think that 70 years later, tens of thousands would still be trekking to Maxville on the long summer holiday weekend. This year’s Games will celebrate those 70 years of producing the best celtic event possible and also salute all of those Scots who went before us to create this great country of Canada. With two reasons like these to celebrate, the Games have pulled together some special attractions to add to our traditional Scottish festivities and competitions. For some people it will be a trip down memory lane while for others it will be a deeper insight to why the Games are such a part of Glengarry. A Heritage Village will showcase Glengarry’s rich history and heritage as well as 70 proud years of the Games. The Village will be open from 10 am to 5 pm each day and will also feature talks on topics related to our storied past. Join Glengarry’s popular historical groups and find out more about the reasons why Glengarry is indeed Where Ontario Began. Outside the Heritage Village, militia groups who were part of Canada’s early defence will set up their encampment ready to tell the stories of their battles and their lives on the front. Join the Glengarry Fencibles, the 84th Regiment of Foot Royal Highland Emigrants, and the King’s Royal Regiment of New York (KRRNY). and the Glengarry Light Infantry (GLI). These regiments span the years from 1780s to 1812 and included members from

Glengarry and area. Also in the camp are the Loyalist Fifes and Drums who will add some heritage music to the air. The Celebration Festivities start at the Tartan Ball where Sir John A Macdonald will put in an appearance and bring greetings from 1867. The Ball will have a Confederation theme and start off the 70th Games events. Friday and Saturday, characters from Canada’s history will be found strolling the grounds and visiting the Clans and History displays. Sir John A and the militia re-enactors will be front and centre in the Clan Parade just before noon on Saturday. Cornwall’s Town Crier will be making himself heard as he announces news and events. Make sure to be there for the special Games tributes at the Friday night Tattoo and the Official Ceremonies.

MACCULLOCH DANCERS TO PERFORM IN HUNGARY

Written by Lynn McNab

The MacCulloch School of Dancing has been well renowned in Glengarry and around the world and will represent Canada at the Summerfest International Folklore Festival in Hungary this August. There will be 23 girls ranging from 16 to 20 years old dancing in Szazhalombotta, the main town 20 km. south of Budapest, situated on the East bank of the Danube River. “Their many years of hard work and performances at local community events have earned them this opportunity,” says director of the school, Deborah Wheeler. “We’re all looking forward to it.” Founded in 1954 by Wheeler’s late mother, Rae MacCulloch, students perform traditional Highland and Celtic step dancing. They range in age from five years old to adults. The traditional dances of early Canadian settlers are performed to the lively tunes of Scotland’s bagpipes, as well as the Irish, French and Scottish fiddles and accordions.

throughout Scotland and had the great honor of performing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth with the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band at Balmoral Castle. The dancers have represented Canada in close to a dozen countries from many states in the USA to the Republic of China. There will be 18 countries participating in the Hungarian festival this year, including Brazil, Italy, Poland, Mexico and Russia.

Dancers costumes depict the variety of Canadian tradition, mainly featuring the colorful clan tartans of Scotland.

“The dancers pay for their own air fare,” comments Wheeler. “The host country, Hungary, provides lodging, meals and transportation to and from events.”

“The idea is to preserve largely Glengarry County history and culture through dance,” says Wheeler. The group has been very successful in doing so.

Accompanying the MacCulloch dancers will be The Sixmilecross Band from Glengarry, Jim Forbes who’ll be piping for the troupe, Heather Forbes and Jessica Goulet.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2004, MacCulloch led 505 of her past and then present students in a massed production of Highland step dancing at the Glengarry Highland Games. It got them into the Guinness World Record Book.

Besides taking part in performances and parades with the other countries, the girls will have time to interact and mingle and tour cities and towns. The girls will also dance in Tokol and Rackeve west of the Danube.

In August of 2013, the dancers had the privilege to perform

CAMPBELL FAMILY TRADITIONS HELP KEEP THE GLENGARRY HIGHLAND GAMES ALIVE Written by Lynn McNab

For 69 years, the Glengarry Highland Games has been one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ontario thanks in part to the Campbell family of Maxville. They believe strongly in Celtic tradition, and want to see family legends live on. Jean dancing at the Highland Games in her youth

James and Jean Campbell of Maxville, who have been married for decades, are both past presidents of the organization that hosts some of the best pipe bands, drummers, fiddlers, step dancers, heavyweight athletes and musicians from around the world. Born and raised in the Maxville area, James and Jean have attended the Games most of their lives. “I’ve not missed one since my father helped start the event in 1948,” says Jean of her father Peter MacInnes who was first president when the crowd of 10,000 poured into small town Maxville. “Visitors came to see the Scottish talent, but also because Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King opened the first Games.” Jean explains that her father and some local businessmen wanted to make sure that Scottish traditions lived on and would not be lost by the younger generation. “He used to take me to Highland dance competitions all around Ontario and that is when he fell in love with the Celtic life,” expresses Jean who continued to dance for many years. “He made it his mission to start a games in Maxville, partly to encourage me to dance, but really because he believed in the history, tradition and Scottish lifestyle.”

The Highland Games energy has been passed down the line in so many Glengarry families, but particularly in the Campbell household. Even the Campbell’s daughters, Lynn and Karen have become involved and are encouraging their children to appreciate the traditions. James and Jean’s story is unique in so many ways. “I was working at the Games,” says James of his teenage years. “I was watching the Highland dancing and noticed this girl who was really good. I asked my friend who she was and he told me it was Jean MacInnes. I didn’t do anything at the time, but she was on my mind for years. I finally asked her out many years later.” After a bit of courting, James and Jean married, stayed in the Maxville area and raised a family while on their dairy farm. Not only have they attended and participated in every single Highland Games since its inception, been organizers, head of committees and presidents, they are also winners of several reputable dairy awards. “We’re proud to have been good farmers,” states James. “But we’re really pleased about the Games and the conJames and Jean Campbell tributions we’ve made.” Jean was president in 1998 when the 50th anniversary of the Games was celebrated. “That was my greatest highlight,” reports Jean who reminisces about her father who 50 years earlier had been in her position. “We want to keep this tradition alive,” says Jean. “I’m happy that my father had the drive to make it happen and that both my husband and I have been able to carry the Scottish tradition on and that our family appreciates the Games so much that they are still involved to this day.”

“CULTURAL DIVERSITY”.... PART OF THE GLENGARRY FABRIC! Written by Pete Bock

You’ve heard family members flip from English to French mid-sentence in Glengarry. You’ve seen francophones captivated by the MacCulloch Dancers at the Highland Games. How does this happen? It starts with a spark, according to conversations with two couples from blended French and Celtic backgrounds. Lindsay McIntosh-Mainville was raised in St. Elmo speaking English, while her husband, Eric, was raised French in nearby Strathmore. They connected at the Mainville family business in Cornwall, where she happened to be looking for flooring for her first home. “We started dating in September (13 years ago),” Mrs. McIntosh-Mainville said, “and a month later we were engaged. So we were engaged after dating 32 days, and then a year later we got married.”

language to learn and retain in our English-dominated culture. English is spoken on the street, in movies, on TV, fills newspapers and the Internet. To balance this onslaught, they enrolled each of their children into French primary school. The O’Connor children got to choose their individual paths once they reached high school age; the McIntosh-Mainville children will attend French high school in Casselman to cement their reading and writing skills. Being bilingual in our region creates social and economic opportunities. Just ask Mr. O’Connor. While English was the consistent language of choice in his household, he and his siblings spoke French when his mother’s francophone family visited. This fluency in French allowed him to transition easily to work in Montreal. Some might think creating space for the French language would curb these families’ appreciation for their Celtic heritage, but this is not the case. It may even have enhanced it. “My children will attend a Franco-Ontarian parade one day,” Mrs. McIntosh-Mainville said, “and they’ll lift heavyweights at the Highland Games on another.” She and her husband share similar backgrounds: both have French and Scottish parents. “But I think I’m more Scottish-driven and he’s more French-driven. I go to the Games for four days. I stay as long as I can.” She recognizes her husband is not quite ready to wear a kilt, but she also sees he’s pleased to get their boys to their Scottish activities. “It is as though we are honouring both of our backgrounds.” Mrs. O’Connor never attended the Highland Games until she was in high school.

Eric Mainville & Lindsay McIntosh-Mainville

As she raised her young family, she fell in love with Scottish dance and encouraged her daughter to become involved.

Next there has to be a leap.

“Hailey is a MacCulloch Dancer, just like Glenn’s sisters

The McDonald, MacLeod or MacGillivray surnames fill many ancestral family trees in the county. Of Irish descent, Glenn O’Connor grew up in Glen Roy speaking 95 per cent English at home. “It was kind of O’Connor Road,” he said, “because there were two or three from the family with poultry farms on that road.” The polar opposite was true for his wife, Michelle, née Martin. Her grandparents lived within a block of each other near her family home in Alexandria. “We always spoke French, completely French,” Mrs. O’Connor said. “We went to French church, everything was French.” For the language phenomenon to continue, the two couples prepared a foundation for the new generation. French schooling had to be a key ingredient. No one recognizes this more than Mr. Mainville, a principal with Le Conseil de district catholique de l’Est ontarien. He recalls sacrifices his mother made to ensure the francophone language became rooted in her children.

“My mom didn’t speak a word of French when she met my dad,” Mr. Mainville said. “Because she wanted her kids to be bilingual, she put aside her career a little. She stayed home and raised us; at the same time she went to school to learn French as an adult.” The couples understand that French is a more difficult

Michelle & Glenn O’Connor were, and she’s going to Hungary.” The Games is a place for the entire community, according to Mr. O’Connor. Grandchildren-participation introduced his wife’s francophone parents to the Games. “When Michelle’s parents started to attend,” he said, “you could hear them say, ‘what are you doing here?’ They knew a lot more people than they thought.” His wife agrees. “It is a gathering place for them now.”

handcraft slowly,

we our Single Malt Scotch Whisky and make it the time-honoured way. finest

Using the natural ingredients, our three distillers orchestrate every second of the distillation process; there are no short cuts to perfection. Every cask is hand-filled, hand-weighed and hand-stamped before maturing for many years in our traditional dunnage warehouses. Why do we make it this way? Because it creates a classic pre-1960s Speyside character:

One of the things I enjoy most about summertime, is driving around our beautiful county roads with my husband and daughters, admiring the corn in the fields. My guy just loves to survey crop progress. He will often ask “Is it knee high by the 4th of July?” or “Is it in tassel yet?”, all the while telling us the family history of different farms in our community, steeped in tradition and agriculture. We love our local farmers, and we are so grateful for their efforts. I love visiting our local farmers market and loading up on all of the fresh produce at this time of year. One of my go-to recipes, is this super easy Raw Corn and Blueberry Salsa. It’s a cinch to throw together, can easily be doubled for a gang and is always a crowd favourite. If you know me, you know that I try to sneak in as many nutrients as I can into any dish. The star of this recipe is the mighty blueberry. High in fibre and antioxidants, a nutritional powerhouse indeed. The tangy zip of fresh lime juice, and the bright flavour of the cilantro, not to mention the sweet crunch of the corn, along with a hint of heat from the jalepeño, and the smooth finish of the sesame oil, just all work together so nicely. I love to serve this salsa with corn chips, but I have also been known to toss it with some cooked and cooled quinoa for a hearty salad, topped off with a bit of crumbled feta. So whether you’re off to a pot-luck, or having folks in this Games weekend, I know you and your guests will enjoy this colourful and delicious summertime salsa. And don’t forget to admire the beautiful corn fields on your next drive :) Happy Highland Games! Julia
