Dear Tournament Participants,

It is with great enthusiasm that I want to welcome everyone to the 2015 World Selects Invitational Tournaments (WSI). In this, our 6th year of competition, we have seen the tournament grow from two cities and twenty four teams, to a truly global showcase encompassing five cities and more than 120 teams competing in 8 age groups, both male and female. The WSI was started with one simple goal in mind in 2009. The organizers wanted to provide an event that brought together the very best ice hockey players in the world in a setting that combined vigorous completion on the ice with friendship and inter-cultural awareness off it. We have gone to great lengths to encourage international friendships that we hope will extend well beyond all of our hockey careers. These include our team of international officials and our formal opening ceremony dinner where we honor and respect all participating countries. This year we expect the event to be bigger and better than the last. We are very excited to be visiting Riga - Latvia, Bolzano - Italy, Philadelphia - USA, Bratislava - Slovakia, and Portland, Maine – USA. Past WSI events have also been held in Moscow - Russia and Stockholm – Sweden, Prague - Czech Rep, Helsinki – Finland, Chicago, USA and Budapest – Hungary. As a hockey fanatic myself, I am paying very close attention to this year’s NHL draft in June. For the fourth time, players (born 1997) that competed in the third ever WSI are draft eligible. If the projections are accurate, many of those WSI participants will be drafted in the early rounds. Other early WSI players are already drafted or playing in professional league across Europe. I would like to thank a key person that have been instrumental to the growth of this world class event. Sergei Zak, WSI General Manager, who has successfully spread the message of the WSI across the world and is responsible for the participation of the very finest hockey organizations. Please join me in a warm welcome, an encouraging “Good Luck” and a prayer for a fun and safe event for all participants.

It’s a great day for Hockey!

Best Wishes,

Travis G. Bezio WSI – Co-Founder

Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites Bolzano’s geographical location is ideal, with the Dolomites right at its doorstep. Here, where North and South meet, town and countryside also interlace in an unusual symbiosis. Bolzano is an enviable picture not only of forests but also of vineyards infiltrating its urban architecture. Bolzano owes its unique atmosphere and hospitality to the lively streets and squares and the peaceful and tranquil surroundings within easy reach, the footpaths for those who like walking and three cable cars for those seeking the thrill of heights and panoramic views over the city and the Dolomites. From the city palaces, here we are, a thousand metres above, between the mountain huts and chalets of San Genesio and Renon plateaus.

Not to be missed: Ötzi – the Iceman

Ötzi is one of the most extraordinary archaeological findings of the last

decades and was discovered by chance, about 20 years ago, thanks to a melting glacier (Similaun), after 5300 years since the day he died, shot by an arrow. From the 25th February 2014 to the 22nd February 2015 the exhibition “Frozen Stories – Discoveries in the Alpine glaciers” reveals an unexpected aspect of climate change, namely its archaeological side. Objects that were concealed for a long time under the glacial ice are now coming to light. Ötzi was not the only lucky find of recent decades: the thaw has thrown up many other items and fascinating stories from the past. The exhibition shows rare and in some cases only recently discovered finds from the glacier regions of the Alps, some of them appearing in public for the first time. A multimedia tour with animations, videos and original finds explains the glacier phenomenon to visitors in all its exciting topicality.

MMM Firmian

This museum is set within the splendid frame of Firmiano Castle, and is dedicated to alpine mountaineering. It is situated on a rocky area south of Bolzano, and houses the new mountain museum designed by famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The Messner Mountain Museum Firmian and its primary theme, the “enchanted mountain”, is the centre of four museums of Messner in the region.

Bolzano Bozen Card

The Bolzano Bozen Card allows visitors to venture the city in an easy and convenient way. The card is valid for three days and offers free entry to all the museums and castles of Bolzano, and over 80 museums in Alto Adige, free guided tours to the city of Bolzano, excursions in the natural parks of Alto Adige plus free hire of bicycles from the Local Tourist Board.

Bolzano Summer

An authentic music festival with symphony performances by the European Youth Orchestra, Gustav Mahler, founded by Claudio Abbado and directed by some the most famous directors in the world. Other performances will include concerts by the youth orchestras linked to the Jazz Festival, the “Bolzano Dance” with an exclusive festival of international premiers, plus interesting courses for music lovers of all styles

and the International Piano Competition “F. Busoni”.

Cuisine and Gastronomy

Restaurants and menus offering the most exquisite and well known dishes of Italian cuisine attract many visitors. Next door the local restaurants offer authentic South Tyrolean dishes to Italians who love new flavours and aromas.

Boutiques and shopping

The old tradition in trading in Bolzano has created an unparalleled range of shops even compared to big cities. Today the shiny boutiques are mixed with designer labels and local items such as Loden, boiled wool, and local food delicacies. Hand-crafted products complete the series of items offered by historic shops still decorated by Gothic arches and frescoes, antique farmacies and fine jewellers under the arcades.

Welcome to Italy

Local information about Bolzano. Although it’s believed Bolzano was inhabited for more than 2,500 years prior, the first recorded history of Bolzano begins in the 1st Century BC. This was when the Roman garrisons arrived. Bolzano began its true identity about 900 years ago with the development of the city’s center. This area is defined by it’s amazing Gothic architecture which was constructed (by the bishops of Trento) as a key junction point between north and south and included an arcade-like avenue which was designed to be a market, with Italians on one side and Germans on the other. This arcade brought a great deal of wealth to the city, which allowed the church to erect several famous architectural monuments. These famous architectural monuments include the cathedral bell tower, a carved wooden altar, and the Giottoesque frescoes. Though most of the architecture in the town now is Gothic style, in the 20th Century, neo-Gothic and Jungenstil styles also were used. Bolzano is not untouched by the many wars that passed their way through, but little evidence of that can be seen and the area has always preferred to be a peaceful territory. Although it’s believed Bolzano was inhabited for more than 2,500 years prior, the first recorded history of Bolzano begins in the 1st Century BC. This was when the Roman garrisons arrived. Bolzano began its true identity about 900 years ago with the development of the city’s center.
