Previous hosts of the World Amateur Team Championship in 2006, the 2006 SA Amateur and more recently the 2019 SA Strokeplay, De Zalze is one of the most scenic golf estates, enjoying a beautiful setting outside Stellenbosch, with mountains as a backdrop. Golfing history was made at De Zalze in 2006 when the South African women’s team won the Espirito Santo Trophy at the 2006 World Team Champs, the only time South Africa has triumphed at this biennial event. De Zalze’s iconic clubhouse terrace overlooks a hilly slope of vineyards and white-walled homes with their high pitches and gables exude a distinct architectural character. A working wine farm, the Kleine Zalze winery, is part of the estate with its award-winning Terroir restaurant. This Peter Matkovich course is striking in its varying range of holes and superb conditioning.
The fairways are generously wide, yet the approaches to greens require precise shotmaking. Water hazards guard three of the par 3’s. It has an excellent array of risk-and-reward par 5’s, notably the 17th where the river forms a shallow ravine in front of the green. The 18th is not only one of the best short par 4’s in the country, but stunning to look at. The championship tee (308 meters) is high on a hill among the vineyards, and only a long confident drive will carry the river to get close to the green. Players laying up short of the hazard must avoid an ancient tall oak close to the riverbank which serve as a sentinel protecting the green.
