BMW’s 318i badge is returning to the 3 Series line-up, with the entrylevel model set to hit South African showrooms during the second quarter of this year, the local division said. But the good news is that it won’t be saddled with the 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine that powered the previousgeneration 318i. Instead, the new G20 318i will come with a detuned version of the 2-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol that’s also fitted to the latest 320i and 330i models. In the new 318i’s case, the engine is tuned to produce 115kW and 250Nm, which is 15kW and 30Nm more than its three-pot predecessor mustered, and it’s just 20kW and 50Nm shy of the latest 320i. So how fast is it? According to BMW, the new 318i will sprint from zero to 100km/h in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 223km/h. And sorry purists, but like the rest of the 3 Series range, the 318i will come standard with an eightspeed automatic gearbox. The latest G20 3 Series was launched in South Africa early last year in just two derivatives – 330i and 320d - but the range was expanded later in the year with 320i and 330d variants, as well as the M340i performance model. There’s no word on pricing for the 318i as yet, but with the 330i currently retailing at R680 000 and the 320i priced at R640 000, dare we suggest the new entry model’s price might creep just below the R600 000 mark.

in Durban. On my first day I was issued with company overalls, gloves and boots and the engineering manager assigned me to a boilermaker as an assistant. I was basically the boilermaker’s gopher, although he took the time to teach me how to weld while also explaining the scientific theory behind the work he was doing. I truly enjoyed my time with him as he had deep technical insights,” he shared. “The highlight of my career so far has been the opportunity to turn around Altron — an iconic South African company. This is an organisation that was founded

by Dr Bill Venter in 1965 and has contributed enormously to the development of South Africa. However, over the past few years it has fallen on hard times. My leadership team and I have an opportunity to take Altron to levels never seen before and I am happy to say that the group is emerging from its challenges to a company where Altronians from all walks of life wake up every day and bring their A-game to serve our customers and communities. It is an honour to be part of the team that is building this world-class company that truly values diversity and inclusion.”

THERE WHEN IT MATTERS

Founded in 1965, Altron has a direct presence in South Africa, rest of Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Australia. In addition, the group’s strategic partnerships with leading international technology companies gives it access to leading technology capabilities and products from across the world, including Asia, Europe and North America. Most of the groups revenue and headcount are derived from the local market in South Africa where the group is headquartered.

Altron combines technical expertise with in-depth customer understanding to provide end-to-end holistic technology solutions.

T

he former Chief Executive Officer of MTN South Africa, Mteto Nyati, joined Altron in April 2017 where he has been responsible for transforming Altron into a world-class information and communications technology company that does good business while doing good. Over a period of 12 years, Mteto held various leadership positions at IBM in South Africa and Europe. He later joined Microsoft South Africa, where he was MD for six years. Mteto Nyati knew years ago as a schoolboy in Mthatha, working behind the counter at his mother’s trading store, that he wanted to fix and build things.

After completing his studies in mechanical engineering at Natal University, he turned down a Rhodes scholarship and headed for Johannesburg to take up a position at Afrox. He was the only black engineer and the sole advice he received from his superiors was ‘don’t mess up’. He didn’t. In 2019 Mteto won the Business Leader of the Year award at the All African Business Leaders Awards (AABLA) and the IPM CEO Special Award from the Institute of People Management. He was also the joint winner of South Africa’s 2013 IT Personality of the Year. In 2004 he was named

one of Yale University’s World Fellows on Global Leadership. Mteto is author of the number one best seller, Betting on a Darkie, a book about his life as a shopkeeper’s son, family man and business leader at local and multinational corporates and also holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering. In his first year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Mteto was awarded an academic scholarship by Afrox to study mechanical engineering. “A condition of the scholarship was that I had to work for Afrox during my summer holidays. My first job was at the Afrox gas plant at Maydon Wharf

The group’s primary focus is in providing innovative solutions in the fintech, healthtech, safety and security, and learning and development verticals that have a meaningful impact on society by addressing challenges facing communities in South Africa, the continent and beyond, while delivering shared value for all its stakeholders. With a global footprint across Africa, Europe, Australia and the Middle East Altron provides locally relevant innovative and integrated ICT solutions to business, government and consumers.
