An All-Star Lineup Comes To Wheeling

ey Ohio Valley, are you ready for some bigtime high school football? And when we declare big-time, we mean tripleheader big-time! And how about meeting some Hall of Fame coaches while you’re at the stadium? And while we’re at it, why don’t we just pay tribute to a West Virginia coaching legend! Well, folks, it doesn’t get any bigger or better than this, as former West Virginia University football coaching great Don Nehlen will be honored during the inaugural Friends of Coal Prep Classic, Sunday (August 31) and Monday (September 1), at WesBanco Arena and Wheeling Island Stadium. The event will pay tribute to Nehlen, feature some of the game’s alltime (past and present) coaching greats and former WVU players and showcase some of the nation’s finest high school football programs. “The Friends of Coal Prep Classic will instantly become one of the nation’s top high school football events,” says national recruiting expert Tom Lemming. “Of the six schools represented in the event, three were unbeaten and state champions a year ago, while another has won two national titles in the last three years.” The opening contest (12 p.m.) features Pennsylvania AAA defending state champion Thomas Jefferson High against Cleveland Glenville High, directed by legendary Coach Ted Ginn Sr., whose program has become a ‘pipeline’ to the Ohio State Buckeyes football program. The second game (3 p.m.) pits the two-time national champion Lakeland (Fla.) Dreadnaughts against the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings, the defending AAAA (largest classification in the state) champion in Pennsylvania. The finale (6 p.m.) is a classic local match-up as Wheeling Central Catholic, four-time Class A defending state champion in West Virginia, battles Steubenville Catholic Central, another perennial power. “Our mission is to showcase the pride and passion of high school football in the Ohio Valley along with that of nationally prominent programs,” says Bridgeport native Ken Halloy, president of Halloy Boy Sports Marketing, Inc., promoter of the Friends of Coal Prep Classic. “With the programs we’ve brought in for our first year, we feel like it’s mission accomplished.” An Evening With Don Nehlen & Friends will feature several of Nehlen’s coaching brethren (see

Joe Manchin and his wife, Gayle, will also be on hand. The banquet, emceed by award-winning sports journalist/singer/entertainer Roy Firestone, will be a high-profile evening full of surprise guests and entertainment. “While Friends of Coal are located in every West

Virginia county and 32 states across the country, nowhere is the heritage and pride of our industry and our people stronger than the upper Ohio Valley,” said Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association. “We are so proud to be in Wheeling to honor our great friend and West Virginia legend, former Mountaineer football Coach Don Nehlen.” On Labor Day morning at 9 a.m., prior to the football games, Breakfast With the Coaching Legends will be held in the stadium, featuring Nehlen

This amazing Labor Day weekend celebration wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of sponsors, with Friends of Coal leading the way. Media partners include Ogden Newspapers (The Times Leader, Wheeling News-Register, Intelligencer, Herald Star, Weirton Daily Times), WTOV9 and AM 1600 WKKX Radio.

What They Are Saying . . . “The people in the Ohio Valley have always been wonderful to me and my family, and I’m humbled to be honored in this way in your community. Thank you for welcoming me back with such open arms.” – Don Nehlen, Former West Virginia University Football Coach “People in this part of our nation are extremely passionate about football. Wheeling Hospital is proud to enhance this special and exciting time of the year by serving as a sponsor of the Friends of Coal Prep Classic. The activities surrounding this event will be first class and something we believe area residents will really enjoy.” – Ronald L. Violi, Wheeling Hospital Chief Executive Officer “The opportunity to see some of the best high school athletes in the country in our own backyard should not be missed! Thanks Friends of Coal Prep Classic for picking Wheeling as the site for this premiere event.” – Frank O’Brien, Executive Director, Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau “The Ohio Valley has always been a centerpiece for high school football. Adding an event such as the Friends of Coal Prep Classic will only further highlight the Valley’s commitment to the sport. We are pleased that one of our own Valley natives, Ken Halloy, has given us the opportunity to showcase our schools, athletes and communities on a national level.” – Perry Nardo, General Manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register “I love high school football and I love college football, especially WVU football. So the opportunity to get involved in an event like this was a no-brainer.” – Jim “Killer” Seckman, Owner of Stoney Hollow Tire “The Health Plan is very excited to participate in this inaugural event in the Ohio Valley. It will be a great showcase of local and national talent.” – Dave Mathieu, Vice-President of Marketing, The Health Plan “We are proud and thrilled to bring our program to Wheeling to face an extremely powerful opponent in Pittsburgh Central Catholic. We had the privilege of playing in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge a couple of years ago, which was also under Ken Halloy’s direction, so we know we’re in for another first class experience.” – Bill Castle, Lakeland Coach

Special Thanks To Our Sponsors The inaugural Friends of Coal Prep Classic debuts Labor Day (September 1), 2008, at Wheeling Island Stadium. The annual three-game showcase features Ohio Valley area schools, along with perennial border state and national powers. The Friends of Coal Prep Classic is more than just football, though. This year a tribute banquet to legendary WVU Coach Don Nehlen will be held at WesBanco Arena the evening prior to the games, while the Breakfast With The Coaching Legends will be conducted Labor Day morning at Wheeling Island Stadium. These incredible events couldn’t take place without the generosity of our sponsors.

Many people have not been able to look past the success glenville has experienced in football and track to truly appreciate ginn’s efforts. ginn and glenville have produced great athletes, but the focus of their program revolves around shaping the complete individual. “That’s a huge accomplishment for me when I see the kids go on and be successful as young men,” Ginn said. “That’s what the whole program is about and that’s why we play football. “I can’t really pick one situation that I think is the biggest success,” Ginn said. “Just being able to be a coach and be an influence to the kids in the community and in the state and being able to lead them and guide them in a different way is a big accomplishment for me.” As part of his guidance, Ginn spends a great deal of time and effort showing young kids not only from Glenville, but the city of Cleveland and its suburbs, how to use their skills to get an education and pursue a bright future. Glenville football alumni are prominent student-athletes for several Big Ten schools. Seven former Tarblooders are on Ohio State’s roster, while 10 others play for Big Ten rivals Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and Wisconsin. There are many more former Tarblooders playing for smaller Division I college programs. Over the past several years, Ginn has developed a summer bus tour. On the trip, Ginn takes kids from around Cleveland to visit college campuses and participate in camps. He expanded the trip to include other area standouts such as former Mayfield Wildcat and current Illinois defensive back Ashante Williams. “I took my kids on the tour for many years, and due to the success that I had with my kids, I felt that every kid in this state should have that same opportunity to be successful,” Ginn said. “I wanted to make sure that I could help everybody else like I helped my own.” Those who once wondered whether Ginn has made a difference in his community no longer need to ask. The answer is written in the eyes of his players and in hearts of alumni. Matt Florjancic, a freelance reporter and sports show host for WOBL and WDLW, covers Northern Ohio for MaxPreps.com.

Castle: Florida’s Coach of the Century by roy fuoco

F

lorida celebrated its 100 years of high school football in 2007, and the Florida High School Athletic Association named players, teams and coaches of the century as part of the celebration. Its coach of the century? Lakeland’s Bill Castle. It is fitting, perhaps, that Castle coaches Lakeland. The school was there in the beginning of Florida high school football. It was 1907 when Thomas Bryant, as a student, organized a Lakeland team that lakeland coach played Summerlin Institute and bill castle lost 47-0. Bryant was the player-coach and his name is forever linked with Dreadnaughts football history. Lakeland plays in the city-owned Bryant Stadium, which is about five miles north of the high school. Castle’s name is also associated with the stadium as the Dreadnaughts play on Bill Castle Field at Bryant Stadium. Castle arrived in Lakeland in 1971 as an assistant to Paul Quinn, who is considered one of the all-time greatest prep coaches in Florida. Following the 1975 season, Quinn left for Bartow High School, formerly the aforementioned Summerlin Institute. Castle nearly went to Bartow with Quinn, but Lakeland’s principal persuaded Castle to remain with the Dreadnaughts as head coach. The Bill Castle era began in 1976 and after three seasons the Dreadnaughts were just 16-14. In the make-or-break year of 1979, with future Florida Gator quarterback Wayne Peace behind center, Lakeland went 11-2 and won the first of 18 district titles under Castle. Peace was the first of two college AllAmericans under Castle. David Williams, an offensive tackle who also played at Florida (and in the NFL in the 1980s), was the second. In his first 20 years at Lakeland, Castle built the Dreadnaughts into one of the top programs in the state. A consistent playoff contender, but still, the Dreadnaughts had just one state title in 1986 to show for all the hard work. Since 1996, however, Castle has moved Lakeland from simply a top program in the state to a nationally-ranked elite program. He has added five more state championships in 1996, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2006. From 1995 through 2001, he led the Dreadnaughts to 60 consecutive regular-season victories – a state record. The streak ended in 2001 with a 2-0 loss to Haines City, the first time in 13 seasons that Lakeland was shut out. That was just a warm-up. From 2004 to 2006, Lakeland put together three consecutive 15-0 seasons and extended its overall winning streak into 2007 where it ended at 53 games, setting another state record. That streak ended against Kissimmee

20

Osceola, which went on to beat Lakeland again in the playoffs and finished the season as state runner-up in Class 5A. The Dreadnaughts finished ranked No. 1 in the nation in at least one national poll following the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The 2006 squad sent nine players to Division I schools, including seven to the Gators, such as running back Chris Rainey. The talented running back capped his high school career by rushing for 601 yards during his final two games, setting a school record with 326 yards in the state semifinals against Daytona Beach Mainland then rushing for 275 yards during the Dreadnaughts’ thrilling 45-42 double-overtime victory over Fort

Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. The other players from the 2006 squad that went to Florida were offensive linemen Maurkice Pouncey and Michael Pouncey, wide receiver Paul Wilson, defensive lineman John Brown and defensive backs Ahmad Black and Steve Wilks. Tight end Jordon Corbin, who missed his senior season because of an injury, signed with LSU, and Rainey’s backfield mate, Jamar Taylor, signed with Alabama before transferring to South Florida. During their junior and senior seasons, Rainey and Taylor combined for more than 3,000 rushing yards each season.

Another State & National Title Possible by roy fuoco

I

t’s a measure of a program when it heads into the season with just three returning starters on offense and three on defense but still is considered a state title contender, and possibly a national title challenger. Yet that’s the story of the 2008 Lakeland Dreadnaughts, one of the favorites to play for the Class 5A state championship game in December. The Dreadnaughts will be on television three times, including a nationally televised game on FSN against Miami Killian. And for the second time in three seasons, Lakeland travels out of state for a regular-season game. Lakeland will play in the Friends of Coal Prep Classic this year after traveling to Cincinnati for the Ohio vs. USA Kirk Herbstreit Challenge in 2006, a game they won over national powerhouse Cincinnati St. Xavier, 25-22, in overtime. Lakeland Coach Bill Castle has no problems with high expectations, nor does he mind playing a powerhouse like Pittsburgh Central Catholic with few returning starters. “If you win it, it puts our program back in the limelight,” Castle said. “If you lose it, hey, you had a great experience, you played a top-notch team and now you come back and you’re getting ready to play your district games.” The 2006 squad that journeyed to Ohio had just three returning starters on defense but was led by a strong senior class that had nine players go on to play Division I college football, including seven with the Florida Gators. This year’s top senior is offensive guard Corey Swanson, who is being heavily recruited. “He’s got the chance (to play Division I),” Castle said. “He’s a good-looking kid. Athletically, I think it’s up to him.” Another offensive lineman, Brenton Clayton, is being recruited and an added reason for excitement

around this year’s team is a talented group of underclassmen led by junior quarterback Jarred Haggins. Longtime Lakeland watchers compare him favorably to Johnnie Jones, who led the Dreadnaughts to the state title in 1996, and to 2004 quarterback Chris Griffin. Haggins passed for 1,029 yards last season, his first as a starter, and rushed for 415. Castle expects even better numbers this year. The backfield is led by a trio of speedsters, juniors Rodney Watson and Ben McRoy and sophomore Steward Butler. They should make up for the unexpected loss of 1,000-yard rusher Jason Guzman. Butler was a junior varsity sensation in 2007 and if he adapts to the speed at varsity, it will take the pressure off McRoy, who will also play defensive back. Watson is the younger brother of Chris Rainey, now with the Florida Gators. The biggest playmaker on the field could be sophomore wide receiver Javares McRoy, who also saw action in the backfield last season and averaged 15.1 yards on 28 carries. He’ll likely get carries in the backfield again, but Castle wants to keep him primarily at wide receiver to offset the loss of last year’s starters. The strength of the defense is a trio of junior linebackers, Jordan Jones, Quayshawn Nealy and Will Lucas. Jones and Nealy are returning starters. Lucas was the defensive standout in the spring. The other defensive returning starter is defensive lineman Deonte Gary. In the secondary, Laconia Blake saw action last season and has the athleticism to be a standout. Lakeland is coming off a 10-2 season in which its state-record 53-game winning streak ended at home against district rival Kissimmee Osceola. The Kowboys rallied to beat Lakeland, 25-21. The teams met again during the playoffs in Kissimmee, with Lakeland losing the rematch, 22-7.

Vikings Love Spotlight, Bask In It by joshua funk Pennlive.com

F

or all you football buffs out there, here’s a history lesson about Pittsburgh Central Catholic. The year was 1988, the first year of the PIAA high school football playoffs, and WPIAL “AAAA” champion Upper St. Clair turned down its chance to play for the newly-created “AAAA” state playoff system. The team that fell to USC, 7-0, was Pittsburgh Central Catholic, and the WPIAL title game berth was the Vikings’ only appearance that decade. The opportunity to play in the PIAA playoffs was extended, and Central Catholic, with an overall record of 7-3-2, accepted. After escaping Brashear, 19-14, in the semifinals, Central Catholic and its state championship opponent, Cedar Cliff, a school from the Harrisburg area in southeastern Cumberland County, each made history. The two teams became the only two PIAA affiliates, to date, to play a PIAA football championship game on the campus of Penn State University. That day, Central defeated the two-time defending District 3 champion Colts, 14-7. To date, Central Catholic, which finished the 1988 season 9-3-2 overall, owns the lowest win total for a team that ever qualified for a state finals. And, for good measure, Central Cathoic is the only WPIAL team that has ever played a football game at Beaver Stadium, Three Rivers Stadium, Heinz Field, Mansion Park Stadium (Altoona) and Hersheypark Stadium (current site of the PIAA finals) in District 7 history. Talk about loving the spotlight. Central Catholic basks in it. Located in downtown Pittsburgh, Central Catholic has built quite an impressive football tradition. Yes, the Vikings can lay claim to turning out current St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger and former Miami Dolphin and Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, but things have really taken off since 2001. Central Catholic has played in four WPIAL football championships since 2001, including reaching the finals three times in a four year stretch from 2001 to 2004. In that four-year stretch, the Vikings went 46-7. Central Catholic racked up a combined record of 29-2 from 2003-04, winning consecutive WPIAL titles and reaching the PIAA finals both years. It was Central Catholic’s second state finals appearance since the PIAA playoffs began in 1988. Some said the 2003 edition of Central Catholic, which fell 37-10 to Lansdale-North Penn in the state finals, was a year ahead of itself. All of the talk leading up to the 2004 season centered around Central Catholic and the outstanding group of athletes it would field. The Vikings would enter the preseason with the No. 1 ranking in the state, and were considered a lock to win the state title. And the Vikings, led by head coach Art Walker Jr.,

former Pittsburgh central catholic quarterbacks dan marino (left) and mark bulger (above)

didn’t disappoint. Central Catholic crushed, squashed, flattened and pulverized its competition, becoming the first-ever PIAA affiliate to finish a season with a 16-0 record. The 2004 edition didn’t light up the scoreboards for 900 points or beat teams 110-0. The Vikings scored 574 points, good enough for 34th best in PIAA history. They just simply lined up, hit the opponent in the mouth, huddled, lined up, hit the team in the mouth, and repeated the process until the opposition waved the white flag. In the 2004 WPIAL title game, the Vikings drew Gateway, a school making its ninth title game appearance and first since 1986. The Gators were loaded with talent, including former Penn State defensive back Justin King, one of the top recruits in the country. Central Catholic shut Gateway out, 28-0. A week later, five-time District 10 champion Erie McDowell was taken behind the woodshed to the tune of 44-3. McDowell entered the game with 11 wins, but a snowball had a better chance of lasting in a hot brick oven than the Trojans even sniffing a touchdown that game. Current University of Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy and his Bishop McDevitt Crusaders (Harrisburg, Pa.) were also shut out, 44-0. McCoy was held to just 37 yards on 20 carries after exploding for six rushing touchdowns against Carlisle in the District

3 “AAAA” championship game the week before. But perhaps the best example of how good that 2004 Central Catholic team was came in the PIAA championship game against Neshaminy, a school from the Philadelphia suburb of Langhorne. In seven offensive possessions, the Vikings scored seven touchdowns. Defensively, Central Catholic allowed the Redskins only one yard of offense in the first half and just one first down, which came via

a penalty. After the 2004 season, defensive coordinator Terry Totten took over the coaching reins when Walker resigned and left for North Allegheny in Wexford. Totten’s first two seasons as head man saw Central Catholic finish 20-4 with consecutive berths in the WPIAL “AAAA” semifinals. But it wasn’t quite the same dominating Vikings team folks were used to seeing. Central Catholic ended its 2006 season with a dismal 14-6 loss to Penn Hills, a game in which the Vikings allowed eight sacks and only mustered 188 yards of total offense and had a very poor third-down conversion percentage. So what did Central do in 2007 to make up for lost time? Well, they finished 16-0 for the second time, scoring a school-record 612 points and rolling up over 4,200 yards of total offense. In the “AAAA” state championship game against perennial power Parkland, the Vikings methodically picked apart a Trojan defense which had, at one point in 2007, pitched a scoreless streak of 28 straight quarters and boasted an impressive eight shutouts. Central won its third PIAA title in convincing fashion, 21-0. So Wheeling, get ready. This is a Vikings’ program that shines in the spotlight, savors the big moment, loves the big game. And with a program coming off five straight seasons of 10 wins or more, why would anyone expect anything less?

“Playing in the Friends of Coal Prep Classic is a great opportunity for our program, and we’re really looking forward to going to Wheeling. I just hope we are not outclassed by a great program in Lakeland.” – Terry Totten, Pittsburgh Central Catholic Coach

The Goal: One For The Thumb by marty gitlin

T

he last time players wearing Wheeling Central Catholic uniforms stepped onto a field NOT as defending West Virginia Class A football champions, gas prices had just crept up to $1.87 a gallon. The year was 2004. The Maroon Knights snagged the crown that season and have clutched it proudly ever since. That means their goal in 2008 can be summed up as follows: One for the Thumb. Central Catholic is shooting for its fifth consecutive state title in 2008, which it will open with a 33-game winning streak. And though many of the players who helped capture the 2007 championship wore the old cap and gown last spring, success often breeds success. At least coach Mike Young hopes it will. “They believe they can win,” he says. “We’ve had back-to-back undefeated seasons. They have the optimism and the positive attitude and they believe they can step up and answer the challenge. But I don’t know of any team that can match our level of competition in terms of having the best (Class A) schedule in West Virginia.” Indeed, running the table will be particularly difficult for the Maroon Knights in 2008. Not only do opponents such as Steubenville Catholic Central, Shadyside and Steubenville await, but one might also believe that the odds are destined to catch up with them.

Don’t tell that to the players, however. The seniors who have already earned three consecutive state championships certainly feel quite capable of achieving “one for the pinkie” in their own high school careers. “Our kids have experienced being there,” Young explains. “We have seniors who have been on three state championship teams in a row. They realize what’s at stake. They know they have targets on their backs when they’re as successful as they have been. And to be in the hunt to earn such accolades is unbelievable. It’s going to be very challenging.” Among those who have basked in the afterglow of at least two consecutive titles are the “Gordon brothers.” OK, they are unrelated, but they are both premier players on a premier team. Senior guard/middle linebacker Dan Gordon is a major Division I recruit who registered 109 tackles in 2007 while senior fullback/outside linebacker DeVaughn Gordon rushed for 600 yards and caught 22 passes for 350 yards a year ago. The Knights feature some youth offensively, including inexperienced quarterback Zach Hood, who appears quite adept at running the option and has shown commendable field awareness. Receiver Nick Hurley caught only 10 passes last season, but four of those ended in touchdown celebrations. Sophomore Marcus Clifford also figures in at either running back or receiver. The Gordons are far from the only talented defensive players on this team. Among the best

“It’s a great honor to be included in the inaugural Friends of Coal Prep Classic. The event will provide great exposure for the Ohio Valley and we hope to represent ourselves well with good play on the field against an always-strong Steubenville Catholic Central team.” – Mike young, Wheeling Central Catholic Coach

“We have seniors who have been on three state championship teams in a row. They realize what’s at stake. They know they have targets on their backs when they’re as successful as they have been. And to be in the hunt to earn such accolades is unbelievable. It’s going to be very challenging.” – Coach Mike Young is free safety Zeke Taylor, who recorded three interceptions in 2007. Senior Chris Duplaga will also play in the secondary while sophomore brother John Duplaga will man one of the defensive tackle spots. The line, in fact, is laden with underclassmen. It will also include junior Jordan West and sophomore Aaron Schnide. DeVaughn Gordon will receive plenty of help in the backfield and on the offensive line. Senior Jacob Schweizer will play alongside Dan Gordon along the front while Zach Foose will be moving from guard to running back. Foose doubles as a linebacker, where he contributed 72 tackles a year ago. Those who have yet to experience varsity football must prove themselves to be ready. Mistakes will no longer simply kill practice time. They could very well kill the 33-game winning streak. Now is the time for instinct to take over. “The key for the kids is to read, react and run,” Young says. “They need to reach the point where they’re not thinking; where it’s all automatic.” Indeed. And if that doesn’t happen, the winning streak and championship streak could be a thing of the past. Just like $1.87 gas.

defensive lines. They block for new quarterback John DiCarlo, who is more than adequately deceptive on the play-action pass and is capable of running the option quite well. DiCarlo also doubles as a defensive back. “John does what is asked of him in our scheme of things,” Bahen says. So do many of the younger Crusaders who have earned their first extended tastes of varsity playing time. They do feature some experienced talent on defense, including linebackers Matt Robinson and Mickey Bednar. Offensively, tight end Toby Longo provides some blocking punch. ever mind that Steubenville Catholic Central lost 16 starters from its playoff team of a year ago. Never mind that some folks are predicting the Crusaders will win fewer games than the eight they won in 2007. Never mind that even Coach Gregg Bahen admits that his team doesn’t boast much depth. Forget all that. Bahen and his players are still setting their sights on a state championship. He wouldn’t have it any other way. “Our long range goals are a winning season, to make the playoffs, to host steubenville catholic central offensive lineman/defensive lineman Zac costlow a playoff game, to win the (Ohio Valley Athletic Conference) and to win a state championship,” Bahen says. “That hasn’t changed.” Aside from that, Bahen refuses to discuss anything past the next game on the schedule. Though the Crusaders were depleted by graduation, he believes they still feature enough talent to shoot for the top. And if they are indeed to reach some of those lofty pursuits, it will likely be a pair of identical twins who will lead them. It is easy to tell Zac Costlow and brother Josh apart because the latter is three inches shorter and five pounds lighter, but both are exceptional linemen. – gregg Bahen, Steubenville Zac and Josh anchor the offensive and

“Our long range goals are a winning season, to make the playoffs, to host a playoff game, to win the (OVAC) and to win a state championship. That hasn’t changed.” – Coach Gregg Bahen maximize its potential, though with the Costlow twins manning both lines, at least DiCarlo and the others playing extensive varsity football for the first time will know they have two standouts to help carry the load. And that is reassuring for a team shooting for the top despite losing 16 starters to graduation. Bahen, however, realizes that the blossoming of his team will take time. They are not likely to emerge from the gate in a full gallop. He would simply like his players to make steady progress, practice to practice and game to game. “We’re working every day to take either big steps or baby steps,” he says. “We need to just keep working and knowing what our goals are. We may surprise some people this season.”

“To be part of the inaugural Friends of Coal Prep Classic is a real honor for our program. We hope we’re up for the challenge against an excellent Wheeling Central program.”

ttention all you Ohio Valley anglers: Instead of telling all those crazy fish stories to impress your buddies, why not get a few tips from the master and then go out and really land the ‘big one?’ You can do just that when you visit The Health Plan Fan Zone, as pro bass angler Jeremy Starks will be on hand to give you some pointers and be available for photos and autographs. He’ll have his bass fishing truck, boat and trailer on display as well. Starks, who earlier this summer claimed the $100,000 first prize in the Southern Challenge Tournament in northern Alabama by beating fourtime angler of the year Kevin Van Dam (known as the “Tiger Woods of bass fishing), will meet and greet fans from 4 p.m. -6 p.m. You can also sign up to win a weekend fishing getaway with Starks, courtesy of his primary sponsor, Friends of Coal! Starks’ ties to Friends of Coal have presented enormous opportunities for public appearances. Starks, a native of Cedar Grove, W. Va., is known throughout the area partly because he’s the state’s only Elite Series angler in a state that follows pro fishing closely. But he is also known because of his Friends of Coal commercials, especially one that features Starks and a group of children fishing on a pristine mountain stream. The stream is on the property of a Nicholas County, West Virginia coal mine. The ad demonstrates the high quality of water around mine sites. In fact, Starks’ public appearances and his work became notorious enough that West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has asked the angler to help

an we already be beginning our eighth season since Don Nehlen said “no mas” to coaching football at West Virginia? Can it be that long since we’ve heard him utter “holy criminy” or “jumping catfish?” Can he actually have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, improved that golf game of his and undergone a triple heart bypass? It certainly will be hard to imagine when you see him this weekend in Wheeling for the Friends of Coal Prep Classic festivities. He looks like he’s ready to take on Pitt, Penn State and Miami (Fla.) in the same week. Nehlen understands that retirement has been good for him. “When I was coaching, I was that dumb guy who ran up the middle,” he says today. “Now they call me a legend. I guess retiring is a pretty good deal.” He may be gone from Mountaineer Field – which was its only name for those 21 years he roamed the sidelines – but he is not forgotten. How could he be, considering the street running by Mountaineer Field has been renamed Don Nehlen Drive. And how can he be forgotten when Bill Stewart is the head coach at West Virginia?

WVU had 17 winning seasons under Nehlen and went to 13 bowls. He coached 15 first team All-Americans, 82 allconference players, six first team Academic All-Americans and 80 players who went on to professional football. “He saved my professional life and brought me home,” Stewart said, a Fairmont State University graduate who was brought back to West Virginia from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League in 2000. “I will forever be indebted. Don Nehlen is, always has been and always will be West Virginia football. Any coach – Billy Stewart at the top – who ever thinks different is an absolute buffoon.” While Stewart takes over a team that figures to contend for a national championship, things were different when Nehlen took over the 1980 Mountaineers. The school had suffered through four consecutive losing seasons and Nehlen was mostly a little known assistant under Bo Schembechler at Michigan. He had been a successful head coach at Bowling Green previously but was walking into a tough Continued on page 37

In all, WVU had 17 winning seasons under Nehlen and went to 13 bowls. He coached 15 first team AllAmericans, 82 all-conference players, six first team Academic All-Americans and 80 players who went on to professional football. Perhaps more memorable than the cumulative numbers were the individual moments Nehlen gave West Virginia along the way. In 1984 he pulled off a 17-14 victory over Joe Paterno and Penn State, the Mountaineers’ first victory over the Nittany Lions since 1955. The Mountaineers had lost 25 in a row to Penn State and had not won in 28 games against them. A decade later, during the unbeaten 1993 season, Nehlen’s Mountaineers stunned powerhouse Miami (Fla.), handing the Hurricanes their first Big East loss ever. What’s more, Nehlen had a knack for beating Doug Flutie. The Heisman Trophy winner from Boston College played against Nehlen four times and never beat him.

“Don Nehlen is, always has been and always will be West Virginia football.” Current WVU Coach Bill Stewart It was Nehlen’s last victory, however, that may have been the most memorable, but just before that came some stunning news. Nehlen announced his retirement after a crushing loss to Syracuse that he pinned on himself for calling a pass play rather than settling for a long field goal. The pass was intercepted and Nehlen shocked his team and the state when he said he had had enough. “I’ve had a great run here. It’s a lot of fun but it’s time for somebody else,” Nehlen said. “This job is about 85 hours a week. It’s seven days a week about 10 and a half months out of the year. We’ll let some younger guy do it.”

“The opportunity to honor one of the finest coaches the college game has ever seen was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up. Get ready to laugh, cry and be thoroughly entertained Ohio Valley. We’re going to have a great time!”

– Roy Firestone, Seven-Time Emmy Award Winning Journalist With ESPN, And Emcee Of An Evening With Don Nehlen & Friends

Going into the Music City Bowl of 2000, Nehlen had lost eight consecutive bowls, stretching back to the 1984 Bluebonnet Bowl victory. His players gave him a going away present he would never forget, beating Ole Miss, 48-31, and withstanding a furious comeback effort engineered off the bench by a freshman Rebel quarterback named Eli Manning. Brad Lewis, Nehlen’s quarterback, had thrown only eight TD passes all year but threw five in the bowl game. “We’re pleased as the devil to have won. We’ve had a long dry spell,” Nehlen said. “If nothing else, the jokes will disappear in Morgantown for a while. This game was something.” Indeed it was. Lewis was perfect in the first half, going seven for seven passing for 216 yards and four touchdowns. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a quarterback with a better half,” Nehlen said. “I’ve never seen our offense execute that way.” It was the perfect way to end his career.

Congratulations and best of luck to all teams playing in the first

We salute Coach Don Nehlen for his outstanding contributions to college football. Coach Nehlen is a true friend of West Virginia coal.

Your Master Of Ceremonies. . . Coach Bill Conley

During his 17 years as an assistant football coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Bill Conley coached tight ends, linebackers, defensive ends and special teams. Conley is the National Recruiting Analyst for ESPN and serves as a radio and television analyst and host for several Central Ohio stations. In 2005, Conley – with co-author, J.C.
