Brief guide to using and searching the Library Catalogue (WebOPAC) What is the Library Catalogue or WebOPAC? The Library Catalogue or WebOPAC is a computerised catalogue of all of the Libraries’ books, videos, audiotapes and online resources. You can use it to find: Whether we have a particular item What resources the Libraries have on a particular subject What resources the Libraries have by a particular author You can access it from any of the college PCs and through the E-Library on Moodle and it is called Heritage. General search To search the Library Catalogue (WebOPAC) simply enter a word or phrase in the search box and click on Search. You will get a list of matches as shown below. To find out where the item is shelved and whether it is available click on the blue underlined title. This is the best search to use to find a particular title or to see what resources we have on a subject. The results are then displayed by title then by author Click on a title to move to the Holdings screen.

If you would like an item that has all the copies on loan you can reserve it. To do this you will need your student ID number. Click on the reserve button and enter the letter p followed by your student ID number (no space). Click login. We will let you know when the item has been returned. Advanced search The Advanced search is best for combining two or more keywords or subject terms. Also use this to search for videos, audiocassettes or DVDs. Words are combined using the drop down menu and selecting AND, OR or NOT. The AND operator will narrow your search and find only items that contain both terms. The OR operator widens you search and will look for items that have either or both the terms. You can use NOT to exclude items that contain a term. Navigation The best way to move around the catalogue is to use the icons at the top and the side of the screen. To perform a new search select either the General search

Reader information You can see what you have on loan and when it’s due back, your reservations, what you have borrowed in the past and how much you owe in fines by using the reader information button. You will need your student ID number preceded by the letter p. A pin number is not needed. After using this feature it is important to logout by clicking on other people can’t view your details.
