CHESTERVILLE ROAD Office Interior 148 Chesterville Road, Cheltenham 2015 The Client was an ATM company that was looking to refurbish the interior of an office and warehouse space. Through several consultations with the client a design was developed, out of which I developed digital renders as well as working drawings.

FLIRTING WITH SPACE Thesis Design Studio

How can design be used to create architecture that fosters a spiritual or ‘enlightenment’ experience?

Spiritual and religious tourism is an industry that attracts millions of people each year to various sacred sites, monuments or experiences. Synonymous with spiritual tourism is a quest to understand our place within the universe, and to achieve a transcendence above mundane reality. A spiritual retreat in a lunar context would draw on ancient wisdom as well as high technology in order to facilitate a transcendent experience and move users towards spiritual enlightenment. ‘Ascension’ evolved through the study of religious and contemporary architecture and employs a range of architectural elements in order to best foster meditative, enlightening experiences. The lunar context allows for lightness in construction as well as a sense of weightlessness in individual experience. The architecture, through site context and design elements, expresses physically the internal state of those who are on the path to enlightenment.

HIRATA’S RETREAT Design Studio C: Iceland Is 2014

Iceland Is required us to design an isolated retreat for an imaginary client: A character named Hirata from the film ‘Cold Fever’. We were to design a retreat which included a bathing experience (drawing on our own personal research into Japanese Bathhouses) - the location of which was Seljavallalaug - a remote public pool in the hills of Iceland. The studio focused on a range of media and experimentation in order for us to design a structure that was highly atmospheric in nature; architecture that engaged all of the senses.

TABULA RASA Design Studio D: Future Now 2014 Future Now speculated on future scenarios and issues, asking students to develop an architectural response that was both innovative and appropriate. Tabula Rasa provides a solution in a future context where conflict has left a desolate, uninhabited wasteland. Tabula Rasa considers the destruction of the post-war environment and offers assistance in its regeneration. In a scenario where the infrastructure and urban fabric of an environment has been obliterated there is always the need for the removal of debris and waste and a reconstruction of the city. This is often a complex, lengthy process that is fraught with complications. Tabula Rasa is a system that consumes war-torn landscapes and leaves behind a vast emptiness. The machine functions as a portable, semi-autonomous concrete recycling facility that devours entire areas of rubble and outputs an extensive foundation on which a new landscape can be constructed. The system digs below the foundations of buildings and crushes all material in its path, separating this material into earth, waste, and aggregate. Waste is buried below a layer of earth, on which concrete is poured. Through this process, Tabula Rasa creates an archive of the past and buries this within the strata of the earth. Memories, both positive and negative, are preserved within the architecture that acts as a monument to the past and foundation on which the future can be built.

UNEARTHING Design Studio: Earth 2011

The brief for this studio was to create a visitor/education centre on Herring Island, a man-made island on the Yarra River in South Melbourne. The design draws on elements of the natural environment, such as the silhouette of intersecting branches to create a Calatrava-esque structure that is reminiscent of some prehistoric creature’s remains. I was particularly happy with the shadows and silhouettes that the model produced.
