history h THE BRASELTON FAMILY

I want to personally welcome you to Braselton, Georgia. We really enjoy quite a diversity of things to do here. Braselton is a great place to live with easy access via four state highways and Interstate 85. Many of our residents work here or within a short drive. Great neighborhoods, local grocery stores, our post office, and four county school systems all provide choices for our residents. Our growing hospital options make all specialty and emergency medical services accessible nearby.

Anne Elisabeth Braselton, great granddaughter of Braselton founder William H Braselton, shared her memories of the Braselton area being farm land and how the town has grown into what it is today. She encourages those who want to learn about the town to stop by the Visitor’s Welcome Center located in the Braselton Bro’s building or to visit the Braselton Library to look through the “Treasured Memories of the Braseltons: 3B’s” by Leta Green Braselton.

Our Town Council is the local government body. We have four district council members and a voting mayor. Since we are somewhat unique in having four counties intersecting in our town, we also work closely with four county governments (Gwinnett, Hall, Jackson, and Barrow counties). Our Town Hall is housed in an original Braselton Brothers’ home—one of many exceptional homes in our downtown. We hope you visit our Historic Downtown area where you will find the town green,

Château Élan uniquely boasts of three 18 hole championship golf courses to keep both an avid golfer and a weekend golfer challenged. on met his wife, Nancy, while they both served in the Army in Japan. The young couple then moved back to the U.S. and Nancy worked and raised their five children, while Don studied business at Duquesne University and operated two drug stores in Pittsburgh.

Don later sold the stores and formed Mylan Pharmaceutical Corporation, a pharmaceutical packaging company now known as Mylan Laboratories. In 1969, the Panoz family moved to Ireland where they formed Élan Corporation, which has become an industry leader in drug delivery products and technology. Today, Élan is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and has developed four of the top 100 products in the industry. The company holds more than 100 world-wide patents, with one of the most recognizable being the nicotine patch, which has helped millions of Americans stop smoking.

HIS LEGACY OF

DRINKING DRIVING & DRUGS

DON

In 1980, Don was planning to build a pharmaceutical plant in Hickory NC, but instead he was courted by Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller with a “Red Carpet Tour” to Georgia, including a trip to the Masters. The Hall County/Gainesville promotion of “From the Islands to the Highlands – We got it All” must have worked, as Panoz built the plant in Gainesville, Georgia. Don and Nancy decided to bring the same discipline and high standards that created Élan Pharmaceuticals to the wine industry. The couple visited Georgia frequently since Élan had a research laboratory in Gainesville. During one of their trips, Don and Nancy stopped and bought some indigenous muscadine grapes to take to a dinner party. When they asked why no one had ever grown vinifera grapes in the region, they were told, “It can’t be done.”

PANOZ

Don went to The University of California-Davis to enlist their help on the study of the soil, temperatures and history, and he discovered it could be done. Test vineyards were planted. He was then introduced to Henry Braselton, and 100 acres were purchased on Highway 53, with the first harvest being Riesling grapes. However, they conducted a marketing study and discovered in order to expand the vineyard, they would need more land. Eighthundred-and-eighty acres were purchased and are now the location for both the winery and the Panoz building.

To the residents of Braselton, Don Panoz is a local hero and we are thankful for his vision for the pharmaceutical industry (the drugs), the Château Élan Winery (the drinking), and motor sport cars/Green4U (the driving). His life's work has changed the landscape of north Georgia forever.

The winery was followed by the spa, the Chateau Élan hotel, golf courses, the villas, and residential housing. Château Élan is now a 3,500-acre winery and resort in the hills of north Georgia and home to the residents

LOCAL > HERO

of Chateau Élan. The properties have been host to the 1996 Olympics and the Sarazen World Open, which Don created for the winners of the National Opens to come to play. The Open was held on the property for five years until the PGA took over the date. Don’s influence in the area’s racing community also began in 1996. He learned from many of his Chateau Élan hotel customers, including Porsche, that they were becoming disenchanted with the nearby Road Atlanta Track. According to the guests, the track was in desperate need of renovations. Don decided to purchase Road Atlanta and began to immediately transform the facility. He added a tunnel, removed the dreadful dip in the track, cleared the hillside, and built more pit areas, in addition to a much-needed overall cleaning. While the intent was to simply keep his customers happy, these improvements led to much more. They expanded the number of spectators from 4,000 to well over 120,000. Prior to his death, Don Panoz’s interest shifted to the world of automobiles, with the prompting and interest of his son, Dan. In the 90’s, Dan was the first to build an Aluminum Intensive Vehicle (AIV). In 1996, Don and Dan established the Petit Le Mans and the American Le Mans Series by purchasing Sebring in Florida and Mosport in Canada. He also formed Panoz Motor Sport Group and Élan Motor Sport Technology to perform all the technical work for the cars. Don’s interest and focus are acknowledged by many as the source for resurrecting motor sports. After his death, Don’s son Dan continued his legacy and contribution to the world of motor cars. Dan is now chairman and co-founder of Georgia-based Green4U Technologies Inc., which acquired DeltaWing Technology Group, Panoz LLC, and Team Panoz Racing. They continue to custom-make V-8 sports cars, but also concentrate on innovative transportation and electric vehicles, light weight and aerodynamic hybrids. They were the first to build a hybrid race car (Sparky in 1998) when no one else was interested. That car ended up winning the Petit Le Mans that year. In 2017 they celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Sparky and the Petit Le Mans. Don’s quarter century in the sport of racing is showcased in the Panoz Museum on Highway 124. Featuring Panoz cars and memorabilia spanning his years of success and innovation in motorsports, the museum is a treasure trove for car aficionados. As residents, we are grateful and honored for the lasting legacy that Don Panoz has left to our community.

BELL

BRASELTON THE TOWN OF FOUR COUNTIES The four counties of Braselton come together in one location marked by a domed statue on a pathway in the rear of Mulberry Park in Braselton. The statue is where Barrow, Gwinnett, Hall and Jackson counties actually intersect. Each of the four sides have one of the four counties engraved at the bottom.Â

The bell and gazebo are located between Town Hall and the Braselton Police and Municipal Court Building on Highway 53.

If you would like to see the statue for yourself, venture to the Mulberry Park subdivision and follow around the roundabout to the second right turn onto Grand Hickory Drive. Follow to Silk Tree Point and take a right. Â After the tenth house on the left, you will find a cement walkway. Just follow down the path to the statue!

MCLAUGHLINS

“Fear of Missing out” brought Justin and Brooke McLaughlin to the area four years ago. “All my family was moving this way and I didn’t want to be left behind,” Brooke said. But it didn’t take long for fear to ease into love. “The sense of community you get in our neighborhood is unreal at times.” Justin and Brooke met online and, after experiencing an instant connection and a whirlwind courtship, they’ve been together for five years. Their blended family includes daughter, Lily (13), and sons, Jackson (11), Landon (10), Graham (10), and Lennox (8). Family time is filled with laughter, love, and plenty of outdoor activities. With so many community events and activities, the McLaughlins find they spend more time together as family. Afternoons and weekends are filled with baseball, mountain biking, hiking, and jogging. In the evenings, they relax while watching football games or movies on their screened porch. Sundays find them in Buford for church at Emmaus. They are also regulars at the starting line of the area’s multiple 5K races. 54 BeLocal

Their favorite hidden gems in the area are the Cherokee Bluff Trail and the Chicopee Woods Mountain Bike Park. Located near Flowery Branch, Cherokee Bluffs is a 2.1 mile loop trail perfect for mountain bike rides or hikes at all skill levels. Chicopee Woods is in Hall County near Gainesville and is the ideal challenge for the experienced mountain biker. All total, there are 21.3 miles of pure cross country thrills. One of their favorite treats is to pile in the golf cart and drive to the Juke N Jive Creamery in Braselton for sweet treats. With 30 regular and dairy-free ice cream flavors, as well as more than a dozen flavors of fudge and a vintage candy counter, everyone in the family finds something yummy to tantalize their taste buds. Although their lives in Hoschton started out merely as a yearning to be near family, the McLaughlins have found the Braselton area itself is reason enough to call it home. So make sure to flag them down and say hello next time they speed by. They’ll be happy to share more about life in this perfect small town.
