INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO
LEIGH ANN WILLIAMS VIRGINIA TECH
HELLO, As a designer, I am passionate about creating spaces that are equitable, sustainable, and supportive of the users’ full wellbeing. I believe that good design is the key to a better future for all and is a powerful tool for change that must be understood in order to be implemented. In school, I have eagerly pursued learning about and experiencing design, and have gained a better understanding of the role research plays in creating a positive user experience. My creations are a direct representation of my attitudes towards design, as well as a reflection of my heart for the people and places they serve. As you look through my portfolio, I hope you see my mission come alive and that you enjoy the journey. If I had to pick a word that best describes me, it would be curious. I love to learn new things, have new experiences, and find out the answers to all the “whys” that pop in my head during the day. My free time usually consists of finding unique AirBnB’s, learning a new crochet stitch, channeling my inner Great British Bakeoff personality, or spending some one-on-one time with my much loved collection of plants. In my opinion, life is an adventure and curiosity is essential to enjoying every step of the journey. It is so nice to meet you, and thank you for spending the time to look through my work!

CORE A Coworking Space Third Year Project Five Weeks Revit, Enscape, Photoshop Haworth Sponsored Competition First Place Winner
Located at the intersection of 2nd and Pike in Seattle, Washington, Core is a coworking space designed to bring the technology professional and the creative together over a cup of coffee. The 4,630 square foot space embodies the uniqueness of Seattle culture- from the Emerald City color palette, to the strong coffee culture, to the natural materials that represent the lively Pacific Northwest outdoors.

Perspective of the Reception and Benching Areas
The concept for Core was influenced by the culture of Seattle and based off the city’s labor force statistics. When researching, it was found that, despite popular belief, only 10.6% of the Seattle workforce are involved in tech related industries while 52.2% of the workforce are members of the creative sector. Because of this, the two contrasting sides of the labor force are both present in the space, and are joined together by a central core that spans both floors in the form of a coffee cafe and mezzanine lounge. Spatially, the coworking facility focuses on creating a space that makes both the technology developer and the freestyle creative comfortable, and brings them together over a cup of coffee.

In response to a muted shell, the space was brought to life through the strong use of emerald green balanced with patterned and colorful textiles, multiple seating options, custom wall graphics, and different floor coverings. Sustainable goals were set for the project, so materials within the space reflect some sense of environmental certification. Due to growing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, an adaptable floor plate with mobile furniture pieces was maintained so that different arrangements could be made to allow for proper social distancing spacing.
The tech startup area includes four private offices with different arrangements, a meeting room, and a small lounge. While the office set ups differ, they all include similar furniture and office products, as well as they all are able to accommodate up to two permanent residents and a guest. The QR Code to the right can be scanned to view a panoramic view of one of the private office options.

Perspective of the Front Path
The Patrick Henry Building is a 1920s historical register, brick facade building located in Roanoke, Virginia that houses leasing and living services and opportunities. The site was chosen due to its walkable distance to the local Veteran’s Services Department, the Carilion Community Hospital, and Elmwood Park, which can be viewed from the building’s interior. Upon further inspection, three areas within Elmwood Park were identified: Art Walk, Library, and Amphitheater. These zones were transformed into a parti that helped inform the spatial location of the spaces programmatic requirements and services. The inner path as seen on the floor plan connects the three zones and creates an outdoor art walk. This central focus serves as an opportunity for resident and visitor connection, an indoor track for health and wellbeing purposes, and an outdoor art walk and farmers market that brings the aspect of social sustainability to life.

Located on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech, the English Department housed in Shanks Hall was in need of a renovation.
