On a recent turnout to a house fire that became a false alarm, it was drawn to our attention how important it is to have access for trucks on to a property. This particular property had been set out reasonably well with its garden design and would have originally been an excellent roundabout in front of the house and good driveway access to the front and side of the house. Over time the trees and shrubs have grown and not been maintained to the extent that getting around the roundabout has become difficult, even with a car. So when a fire truck has to attend a property such as this, it is a real problem if the truck cannot get close enough to the building or water supplies due to bad garden design or poor maintenance of the garden and allowing it to become overgrown. After all, if the building is to be saved or attended to, then access for emergency vehicles is essential. So often we see people planting a beautiful driveway of tress on the edge of the gravel leading up to their house. While this looks nice for the first few years, over time the trees grow and start to block access for larger vehicles and even cars struggle in some cases. If your planning a driveway please consider access for larger vehicles such as a fire truck. Not only will you benefit from a more functional drive way, but also it will have a lot less maintenance in tree trimming. Also the type of tree selection could determine if the tree grows up or outwards. It sounds quite simple but it can make a real difference.
If you intend to burn rubbish, please remember to register your burn one of two ways, online at Fire Permits Victoria or by calling 1800 668 511
