Graphic artist Robert Hold, envious of the zebra-skin rug his cousin inherited from her grandmother, scored this hide off eBay for just $250. “It’s really worn, but I like it,” says the Mission District resident. “It sheds so much it reminds me of a cat.”

Hold, a former art director at W and Jane, admits to a small obsession with white porcelain—this 1950s Tapio Wirkkala cup and Heinrich teapot are highlights of his extensive collection. “I like that the pieces are simultaneously bold and minimal,” he says.

Hold slipcovered an Ikea Nikkala sofa with black-and-white bedsheets from Urban Outfitters and accessory pillows in high-end Schumacher fabric that’s also in a B&W design. “If you keep the colors consistent, mixing patterns is easy,” he says.

The amateur painter created this canvas of blurry SF city lights to conceal a section of clutter in the Ikea bookcases. Incidentally, Hold, who also pens a style blog under the name Mr. Peacock, considers the books to be “a busy accessory.”

The room’s dynamic energy flows through a clear and unassuming Kartell Eros chair by Philippe Starck. The pillow is a sentimental keepsake that was embroidered by Hold’s grandmother. “I like the contrast between modern and ‘old lady,’” he says. x
