By Martin Groters Last week I was joining the Eurosonic Noorderslag Conference in Groningen. This conference is part of the Eurosonic Noorderslag Festival (ESNF), the key exchange and networking platform for European music, European artists, and the international music industry and scene. For those who like figures: there were 337 acts, 45 acts, 3750 conference visitors and 39 nationalities. I experienced a few concerts on Friday evening, but my main goal was to visit the conference in order to learn more from the international music industry and the cultural sector, as part of the leisure industry. Therefore I joined a few workshops and lectures. In the workshop ‘Trends and developments at Dutch concert venues and rock festivals’ I learned that concert venues and festivals are booking less alternative acts because of the decrease in subsidies they receive from the Dutch government. By booking more mainstream bands venues take less risk and can be sure they have a certain amount of visitors and therefore more profits. Result of this trend is that young, alternative musicians have fewer opportunities to play and gain experience on stage. At another workshop from Yourope, The European Festival Association, the increasing problem of abandoned tents at festivals was discussed. About 10 % of the festival visitors leave their tents behind at the camping sites, tons of waste is the result. Of course this causes a major environmental problem. This phenomenon exists because there is a lack of connection between the tent and the festival-goer. Tents can be bought for 10 euros, so campers don’t see the worth in cleaning, packing and carrying the tents home and use them again. That all these abandoned tents will be collected and reused is a huge misconception, this happens to only a small percentage. A solution is that throughout the festival the tents are sprayed with a festival stamp of attendance, what makes the tent a kind of collector’s item, like the festival attendance bracelets festival goers are wearing sometimes for years. Of course informing festival goers and making them aware of this problem is also part of the solution. At the conference I also learned about seniors and the cultural sector, 25 years of house music in The Netherlands, the age of curation (Spotify, 22Tracks, Deezer, etc..) , and higher education in the cultural sector. Going to these conferences is important if you are a professional in the leisure industry. New developments and trends can also be found in all kind of magazines and journals (this morning I read in De Volkskrant about the new trend of underwater hotels!). In the Stenden library, on the first floor, you can find all kind of journals covering different sectors in the Leisure Industry. It’s good if you go there so now and then to see what’s going on in the leisure field.

By Hilda Koops Module evaluation period 1: At the end of every module you are asked to fill in an online module evaluation. We are very thankful for you doing so and wouldn’t it be nice to see the main results? This study year some changes have been made and we need the results of the module evaluations to find out if these changes are effective or not. One of the major changes this year is the PBL/CBL system. Last year you had to hand in your homework online and it was graded. This year you have to have at least 80% participation at PBL/CBL and the link between the cases and module assignments is better. A second change this year is that each module now has two module assignments where one is a research assignment. This is to train you for your dissociation at the end of your education.

HRM: The results of HRM were good. The link between cases and module assignments were found to be effective. The main results that have to be looked at in the future are: The explanation of the cases The explanation of the assessment criteria There should be more BE lessons Aspects that were rated positively: Lectures LAW and Service Provision Management skills CBL, the no homework grading Planned changes: Better explanation of the cases New vacancy text for the recruitment assignment

IVK: In the module IVK everybody enjoyed the trip and thought it was organised well. In the evaluation the main aspects that have to be improved are the amount of lessons and the busy schedule.

@WORK: The evaluation was not filled in by enough students to qualitative results. Main results that were found by the people who did fill it in were: The quality between the internship placement companies are very different. Some internship companies were evaluated as very bad. Future changes: Be critical at finding the right companies for the research and internship.

Strategic management The module strategic management will not be evaluated until the end of module two. Students that followed the module in period 1 are allowed to e-mail their feedback to the module coordinator.

Internship: Last module 19 students participated in an evaluation about their internship. The students see the internship as a very nice experience to learn more. The tasks within the internship fit the knowledge the student has learned at Stenden. The internship was rated high by students and companies.

WRITTEN BY: JANNIE HOEKMAN – 5 DECEMBER 2013

WHO:

Jannie Hoekman

AGE:

21 years old

NATIONALITY: Dutch

EXCHANGE PROGRAMME: project management for events and events industry

LOCATION: Birmingham

FAVORITE ENGLISH FOOD: Fish and Chips

WHAT DOES JANNIE MISS THE MOST: Friends and family

FAVORITE ENGLISH SAYING: HI YA LOVE

It has been a long time ago since I last blogged, acutely that long, that my exchange experience is almost finished! It’s so much fun here that I don’t even think about blogging, or home in fact! It seems like yesterday that I started writing my blog and before you know it, it’s already the 5th of December, which means Sinterklaas! Maybe I will leave my shoe out tonight with a carrot in it, you never know if he will pass by England. Funny actually, this is the first time ever that I am not celebrating the 5th of December. In two weeks I will be back on Dutch grounds to celebrate Christmas, the new year and my old lad turning 50! As a perfect daughter I couldn’t miss that now could I! After all the festivities I will fly back to Birmingham for a last couple of weeks school and then my time in England is over. That means I will be going back to Stenden which I am not really looking forward to as I am so use to the English way of education now. Right, time to look back at what I have experienced so far in England. Pff, it’s so much that I feel like I am having a blackout and can’t remember anything at all. I guess one of the best things I am experiencing now in the UK is that they are absolutely obsessed with CHRISTMAS! For the last three weeks now there is a daily Christmas market which is huge and goes through the whole town centre. Everywhere are activities such as; eating as much as you want, alcohol, all kinds of fun things to buy and of course, fantastic Christmas decorations! Its seems that when the Market is on, the whole of Birmingham is at the market and that is great! Right, what else have I been up to, let me think. Well shopping, going out with friends and of course school. English education is VERY DIFFERENT to Dutch education. I wouldn’t say easier, but just way more laid back, relaxed and chilled! The teachers are very friendly and helpful what I find great! Anyway, writing this makes me feel a little sad that it is all coming to an end so I think I am going to stop now! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Our fashion culture Stenden University is a very international school and has therefore a lot of people with different cultures walking around. These students express their standards & values partly through their clothes. We asked a few of our leisure students to put on their best clothes and tell the story behind these clothes. Quickly read further! The story of Julian Nickel – second year student ILM

The story of Jannine de Zwaan – First year student LM

First of all, his clothing style is not boring! He likes colors, because they express his mood. Like he said himself: “I want to dress funky and don’t like to wear normal and casual clothes”.

“I like basic clothes, combined with nice jewelry or scarves.” The sneakers are the finishing touch! Jannine de Zwaan describes herself as sturdy and won’t wear easily heals, dresses or skirts.

Julian is always very happy and colorful. And there is one special message he would like to tell the people with his clothing style: “Dress yourself colorful and the way you feel.”

This girl is confident about herself and loves to wear comfy clothes! And she has one last thing to say to you: “Be yourself and wear whatever you like!”

The story of Michelle Bouma – Third year student LM Michelle is also a sturdy chick and loves to wear a lot of shirts from bands. By wearing these shirts, she shows her respect and support towards the bands she likes. Michelle also likes to wear the colors red and black. And like she said herself ,“ I feel good with what I wear, it fits my body”. And this is also the message she would want to share with you: “Be yourself and never let somebody tell you that you can’t do something “ Made by Merel Bot

Important politici make mistakes to! Prime minister Joop den Uyl (1973 – 1977): “We are a country of undertakers” Joop den Uyl bedoelt: “we zijn een land van ondernemers”, MAAR hij zegt “wij zijn een land van begrafenis-‐ ondernemers”. Joop van den Uyl means: “we are a country of entrepreneurs”. The mayor of Delft: “ This is where we bury our oranges” Hij bedoelt: “Dit is waar de ‘oranjes’ (koninklijke familie) zijn begraven” He means: “This is where the royal family is buried”

Dunglish is the same as Dutch English. Many native Dutch speakers make mistakes in the sentences they form, when speaking English. In this way, you get funny and weird sentences like; ‘make that the cat wise’. The Dutch word for the most poorest Dunglish is ‘Steenkolenengels’. This word comes from the twentieth century, when Dutch people where working in foreign countries, communicating to the personnel of English coal ships. The top 3 of Dunglish words: Doodlopende straat – deadwalking streat Kinderslot – childrenlock Ondernemer – undertaker Ready for a Dunglish song? Check it out here! You are always on time and prepare yourself extensively previous to the sessions. You only leave a lecture or lesson when the last word of the tutor has been spoken and you can be sure to not miss out any important information. Moreover, you are a well-organized person that sorts all his notes from sessions in order to be prepared for exams. Also your group member know about your organisational talent, for which reason you are always the first point of contact for students that missed out information. Compared to other students, you already have a plan for your life after study because even before you stared studying it was clear for you in which vocational direction you are heading. Concluding it can be said that you are a dream

You always know in which direction you are heading, however you don’t necessarily need to be attended for this at all time. You don’t directly worry if miss out a lecture because you know that eventually one of the other guys will provide you with the most important information. You mostly are punctual however you do not directly worry out when having to wait in long canteen queues because you know that your grades still will be ok cause you never failed an exam. Your exact future plan is still kept open by you, eventually you can do a lot with this kind of study, so you wont be pressured to take decisions now. Also when doing group work you never prefer to be the leader and leave that role up to others as long as your basic ideas will be implemented.

The only thing where you are reliable for is that you will always e too late, however still relaxed and with a coffee in your hand. Also cigarette breaks belong as a fixed component to your study routine! The only questions that you would ask during a lecture are ‘’Did I miss out something?’’ or ‘’Did the attendance list already go around?’’. However, two days before the actual exams you start to panic and realize that you cant remember anything of the lessons you attended and the homework that you quickly scrawled down. Still the others value you for the nice talks during breaks and your open and friendly way of living. All in all it can be said that you are one of the than-life artist within the stressful Stenden student life.

Ready for a work out!?

Maybe it was one of your intentions for this year, 2014, to keep on track or to change your life completely and focus more on sports. Signing up for fitness or yoga… it is really easy, but to really take the step to put on your sports clothes and go, is another thing. Body mix, Yoga mindfulness, squash, fitness, you name it! There are so many different possibilities to keep yourself moving. And we do move all the time; climbing up the stairs, cycling to school and walking to our classroom. But according to CBS (2010), 77% of the men between 6-80 years are working out and only 66% of the women. The last three years there is a slight decrease and this got to change, we got to change! We decided to ask the blogger, Jelle Hermes (Sochicken), to give us some advice on how to really take the step and participate in any sport you like! Jelle gave us the following tips:

1. Start working out with one of your friends. In this way you make it fun for eachother and you can motivate eachother to really go to the gym. 2. Keep an eye on your progress, so you stay motivated. 3. Not motivated? Push yourself and after the work out you will feel so much better! 4. Make sure you plan your sportmoment during a quiet moment. 5. Start small. If you haven’t been training for a long time, don’t push your body to the limit. Start small and make it a little bit harder for your self every second time.

So are you ready to face the challenge and start with some work-outs once in a while? Then take the advice with you and find a sport that suits you. Where to go? Bewegingscentrum Leeuwarden is right across Stenden University and has got a lot of special offers for students! Ready for something more exciting? Sign up for the survival challenge of Copinibuitensport at the Groene Ster! Go to www.bewegingscentrumleeuwarden.nl or www.copinibuitensport.nl for more information.

As in every edition of our Leisure Magazine we are presenting you a quarterly student. This time, Laurens is giving us an insight in his exceptional hobby.

!

Laurens, can you introduce yourself briefly to the readers? My name is Laurens Christmas and I am 26 years old. After having followed the courses Leisure and Recreation at Noorderpoort College in Groningen, I am now first year Leisure Management student at Stenden Hogeschool.

What is your hobby? My hobby is that I am a voluntary presenter for the radio station at the MCL (Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden). The radio station not only broadcasts within the hospital but also at three different nursing homes, which are located near the hospital.

Since when have you been into being presenter for a radio station? I can’t really give you a precise date, but I do remember that I started in 2010. At first I had some meetings with the board of the radio studio for them to see if I was suitable for the volunteer work. They needed me to sign some important papers (like a contract) and they also wanted me to do some copresenting to see if I met all their requirements. After all of this I was able to start presenting on my own; which is something that I really enjoy doing.

What do you like about your hobby? Then one thing I really like about presenting at the MCL is that the people, such as patient, visitors nurses, and doctors,, can hear the songs you are presenting to them. With some of the programs at the radio station people can request a song and then the presenter of that particular program can announce it.

! !

It gives me the feeling that there is interaction between the people and the radio station and that people can hear their requested song.

Why do you think your hobby is special compared to others? Let me think about this one … I think it is special because you are doing it mainly for the patients in the hospital and the elderly people in the nursing homes. You can, in some cases, have a bit of interaction with them and also are giving them a good time while being there for whatever reason. Therefore, we are trying to give them, as much of a good time as we can by presenting songs and different themes to them; 7 days a week.

‘’We are trying to give them as much of a good time as we can.’’ Lastly, can also other students start this hobby? Yes, the radio station is always looking for people who are interested in doing one of the following: - Presenting "!Doing!the!technical!stuff!during!a!show! "!ICT! Students can apply quicker by sending the board an e-mail and mentioning their reason for interest. There are of course, some, specifications that students would require for the various jobs that are either available or students are interested in. Students who are Dutch are most welcome since everything we do is in Dutch. The website of the radio station is http://www.omroepnoorderbreedte.nl/ here students can also find out how to apply and learn more about the radio station.

It's never too late to make a revision plan or timetable. Doing so will help you priorities and feel more in control. But be realistic!

Schedule regular breaks, and do take them. Make breaks longer as the day goes on. Remember that most people can only concentrate fully for about 45 minutes at a time.

Avoid caffeine, which in large doses can cause tension and anxiety. Remember caffeine occurs in tea, cola drinks and chocolate as well as coffee. Drink plenty of water.

Avoid people who are obviously panicking. It can be contagious! Try not to have post mortems on each exam, as this can also increase your anxiety about later papers. Aim instead for a constructive appraisal of your time management.

Don’t try to revise for too long in one day, especially as exams draw nearer. Try to avoid revising late at night. Work on your most difficult subjects during your ‘peak’ periods

Consider revising with friends splitting responsibility for obtaining photocopies and revision notes can save a lot of time.

Try to get enough sleep tiredness promotes anxiety. Spend some time unwinding before you go to bed.

Try some relaxation exercises. They can reduce your overall anxiety level and help you cope with any panicky feelings.

Pay attention to your diet, and take regular, aerobic exercise (if you enjoy it).

Make sure you spend some time relaxing and having fun.

Update your student room! As student it is really difficult to find a room that meets your expectations, especially in the center of the city. Often the size of the room doesn’t meet the expectations. All y our stuff won’t fit in the room, while it is so important to have a nice couch, a big bed and a nice study space. So how can we make sure that every thing fits in the room? And how can we make the room look big and bright? Bright colors, a few objects and small tables make your room look bigger… We already knew that. But did you also know that horizontal lines make y our room look bigger? In this way you won’t get the feeling that you are living in a really small room with to much furniture. You will get the feeling that you have enough space to move and you will have a clear mind. Next to working with forms, you can also work with different kind of furniture. Making use of a sleep couch or high sleeper increases your space for other furniture like a table. A table that has got a desk function to. Also, you can work with the height, by using long cabinets. Finally, make sure you don’t put to many things on your wall. This will make your room look really small and makes it more chaotic. And when your room is chaotic, your mind will get chaotic to. So remodel your room and create a comfort zone. As long as you are creative and you use the right forms and furniture, your room will look big and become multifunctional!

Student house of the year 2013 will be …

Not only the styling of your student room can improve your student life… Your roomies can do so to! Which student house will be this year’s winner? Go to www.studenten.net , sign up and get selected for the title!

25% of Leisure Managements second year students received

their propaedeutic diploma. What a great achievement! The other 50% will receive theirs in the second year! This means they collected all 60 points that can be received in the first year of Leisure Management. At around 15.45 students and their families started to arrive in the hall next to the auditorium. The StuRa provided a cup of tea or coffee whilst they were waiting. The students had to sign their diploma before the ceremony could begin. Finally after every student had signed their diploma everybody was moved in to the auditorium where the ceremony took place. Different teachers from Leisure Management were also there to show their support and help. The students were called down one by one to receive their diploma and a flower from flower boy and girl “Edou Hilverda and

Lia Kuperus After the ceremony everyone was moved back to the hall where champagne was ready and photos could be taken!

The Green Key !

The world is changing rapidly and we are al aware of that fact. Woods are getting poorer and the earth is heating up. Also, the air we breath isn’t the same as 200 years ago. Nowadays, we breathe the air, that is filled with dirty gases. With sustainable solutions, we try to make the world a better place again. And what’s your green key that leads to a healthier world? ! Today, we are realizing that we have got to change, to make our livingspace healthier. The companies are having a big part in this change to and therefore they developed ‘the green key’. The green key is an international eco-label for companies with certain sustainable standards and ‘rules’. If the companies follow these standards & rules, they will be awarded with this green key. Nowadays, around 2300 companies in 44 countries are having the green key! But what is the advantage of this label for a company? The advantage is that they are in favor when costumers make their choice during shopping. By choosing a company to shop that is sustainable, you are acting responsible. Stenden’s ‘company’, the hotel, has the green key to. They and the universit itself are trying to work as sustainable as possible. A few examples of the activities of this sustainable hotel: 1. The hotel is working with sustainable coffee and tea cups, plates and napkins. 2. They are seperating the garbage through three different bins. 3. The hotel makes use of sustainable lighting Stenden wants their students to be aware of the fact that we all should handle sustainable. Therefore the University wants their students to print sided. Another example is the following; students are not allowed to hand in their reports within a plastic cover. And what is your green key that leads to a healthier world? A question that we asked you earlier. Why? Because you, as a student, can make a difference to! First of all you could also seperate your garbage. And are you also using a new coffee cup at school very often? You could also choose for your own plastic coffee cup, that you can bring with you every day. Finally, there are a lot of other ways to act in a sustainable way. So by being sustainable, you can make a difference. Ask your friends, family or other people for new sustainable ideas, or spread your own ideas. Start living green!
