Preface In front of you, you see the second edition of the Leisure Magazine of the academic year 2014-2015. In this winter edition you can find the ins and outs of the Leisure industry and Stenden University Leeuwarden and Emmen. This edition includes different kinds of interviews, information about the workfield and a lot of input from the students of Leisure Management.

Of course we had a little help when we made this. We would like to thank all the people who were of additional value for this edition. Some of them wrote different kinds of articles and some of them were willing to give an interview. If you have any questions about this edition of the Leisure Magazine you can send an email to: secretariaat.LT@stenden.com

Meet the editors

I am Jessie Treep, a third year Leisure Management student. Currently I am busy with creating this Leisure Magazine, which is an assignment from the module @WORK. What I would like to achieve with this education is working in the event or the media branch. That is why, probably, I will study something with media after I finished this education.

2

My name is Laura Schippers and I’m a third year Leisure Management student. Right now I am doing the module @work and my assignment was to create this Leisure Magazine. It was a challenging project, but I am happy with the result. After this education I want to be an event manager. This is the reason I am going to do the minors Event Management 1 & 2. But first the magazine, I hope you enjoy reading it!

Module evaluation by Mark van Driel

As all good things come to an end, we have almost finished the second module. As a first year’s student, a huge load of information overwhelms you in the first module. Not only the module Introduction to Leisure (ITL) starts, but what about English, Management Skills, Business Economics, Young Entrepreneurship, PPD and Written Communication. Furthermore, the students need to find their way in school. Where to go in case of personal problems, how to find and read my schedule, how does PBL work and where is the logic in the numbering of the class rooms? These all are issues first year’s students have to deal with. When it comes to the content of the ITL module, during PBL students get introduced with the concept ofleisure. What exactly is Leisure, what is the history of leisure, what influences people’s leisure behaviour and what are trends within the leisure industry. Students get acquainted with the different leisure sectors. Within the context of the module assignment all first year’s students went on a 4 days fieldtrip. During this fieldtrip they visited several leisure companies in the Netherlands. They received a guided tour and a presentation at TUI. Besides this also a presentation and sports activities at Sportboulevard Enschede and at least they visit the famous Kroller Muller Museum.

As Leisure Management, we think evaluation is very important. We always take the opinion of students into consideration to develop our curriculum. During the last session in week 9, the module itself was evaluated. The outcome of these sessions will be used for next year. The fieldtrip was evaluated using a digital evaluation. It is very important to develop the fieldtrip as well. The students were asked for their opinion on the social activities, what their favourite and least favourite activity was during the fieldtrip and finally an overall grade for the fieldtrip. Overall Walibi Fright Nights was the most favourite activity, followed by Sportboulevard Enschede. The least favourite parts were the visit of the Kroller Muller Museum and the presentation of the Forestation Committee (Staatsbosbeheer). The Leisure Pubquizws a much enjoyed activity. They mostly appreciated the fact the group was mixed up and got the opportunity to get acquainted with other students. The sports activity in the woods was evaluated positively, however in order to improve the structure some changes are required. The fieldtrip was overall rated with a 7.5, a real good result. We would like to thank all students fo their co-operating with the evaluation and wish everybody a good continuation of their studies.

An important aspect of a fieldtrip is the social bonding. An example of this aspect are the two evening activities. We started the week with a Leisure Pubquiz. On the third evening there was an exciting sport activity in the woods. This activity was organized by the students.

“What exactly is Leisure, what is the history of leisure, what influences people’s leisure behaviour and what are trends within the leisure industry” 5

Leisure projects by Anita van der Ven

WHY Leisure Projects? The Leisure manager creates added value by designing leisure experiences which, where possible, contribute to the quality of life (well-being, health, sustainability, participation etc). A Leisure Manager is an organiser, coordinator, networker and an expert in building bridges between leisure and other sectors. Therefore, it is important to give students the possibility to explore the work field and to collect work experience as organiser and coordinator. WHAT is Leisure Projects? In the second year of the Leisure Management program Leisure Projects students work on ‘real life projects’. Students integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in the first and second year. They work for a company or organisation from the industry on very diverse and multidisciplinary projects. In groups of 6 students they establish an Event company and work on an event for one academic year. The event company organizes the event from start to finish, development of the concept, preparation, execution and evaluation.

“Creating and marketing meaningful leisure experiences, professional behaviour, Real life projects, Adding value for yourself & for the organisation” WHERE do Leisure Projects groups work? Within the different sectors of Leisure Management: sports, events, culture & arts or recreation. It is also possible to organize an event for a good cause or an event for community development. Examples: KIKA cabrio tour, Toon Hermans huis, outdoor event Natuurlijk Kollumeroord, Bewegings Centrum Leeuwarden, Tryater, Fries Museum, Podium Asteriks, Symposium Creative Arts Therapy, Stenden TEDx, Friesland POP, organize a tour for the Rock band ‘Act of State’ and many more.

Why do we choose Leisure? by Pem Versluijs

There has been an increase of the amount of first year students. This is the reason there is done a research towards this change. The main topic of this research is the quesiton: “Why do first year students of the academic year 2014 -2015 choose for the education Leisure Management at Stenden University?” Before the research started there has been done a brainstorm about the possible reasons behind the decision of the students. Maybe the programme is broad, because of Stenden and its learning system (PBL) or maybe they have heard positive stories from friends and family who are already studying Leisure Management. To get the answer, the first year students, of the academic year 2014-2015, were asked to fill in a short questionnaire to discover why they choose for Leisure Management. The research started with making a problem statement – the thing every research report starts with. Why have first year Leisure Management students of the year 2014 – 2015 chosen for the programme at Stenden University and how did they obtain information about the programme? The second thing to do was making a survey and make sure there were enough respondents. The conclusion was that distributing the survey through ELO or email does not work. This is the reason that the survey was handed out on a Wednesday morning during Young Entrepreneurship. The results of the Dutch stream and the international stream were split up to get a better image of the reason why they choose for Leisure Management. Besides that, the advertising is different outside the Netherlands so it might be different how the international students have gathered their information. Most of the students from both streams said they have looked for information about the programme online. For the international students the taster day was an important way to get their information as well. The Dutch students said they used both the taster day and the introduction day. Students choose for Stenden because of its international character and because of the learning system PBL. For the Dutch students the location of the school was important as well. For the majority of the students it was their main choice.

Did you visit a taster day?

34 % YES 66 % NO

Is Leisure Management what you expected?

69 % YES 31 % NO

Number of first year students Leisure Management:

148 in 2014 97 in 2013

Finally the big question: What is the main reason to choose for Leisure Management in Leeuwarden? The answer is actually really simple, the programme of Leisure Management is really broad and the majority is interested in one of the leisure industries. Seems to be good reasons to choose for Leisure Management!

Internship of José Hamersma by Jessie Treep

José Hamersma is a fourth year student of Leisure Management. She has done her internship at Curaçao. Right know she is writing her thesis about the new ‘human park’ in Emmen. We had an interview with her about her choice to device her internship form her thesis and about the plans for the old zoo in Emmen.

We understood that you did first your internship and then your thesis, both on a different subject. Why did you choose to do so? Last year in April I finished all the modules and I had done the minor Event Management on Bali. But I also decided that I wanted to do my internship in a foreign country as well. However, I didn’t go right away because first I wanted to save some money. I heard from several people that it is difficult to combine your internship in a foreign country and your thesis. That is why the plan was to start my thesis, then go on an internship to Curaçao and to then finish my thesis at home. However, the first plan of approach to the thesis didn’t work. That is why I decided to go to my internship Mambo Beach in Curaçao and then do my thesis at home regarding the plans of the old zoo Emmen.

What is Mambo Beach and what did you learn there during your internship?

“The ‘people’s park’ will be designed to accomodate different kinds of accommodations and leisure activities”

10

Mambo Beach is a beach resort where different kinds of events are organized. Business at Mambo Beach involves a great deal of marketing. However, it was not what I expected. The tasks assigned to me were not at the level of an HBO student.

What did a normal working day at Mambo Beach look like?

A normal day at mambo Beach was from 9 till 5 at the office. Of course not every day is the same, though. But most of the time the day started off by reading and answering emails and checking the company’s social media. We often went to the Mambo Beach resort to hold interviews with guests and staff. Besides that we had to design a script for events and analyze texts. In the evening I was free, so I went out a lot with other interns and roommates. The weekends were always fun. We joined bootcamp workouts, and of course, we went to the beach a lot.

Would you recommend an internship in a foreign country to other students?

Yes! It is a unique and special experience so I would really recommend it. However, I think you learn more if you do your internship in the Netherlands, because the level in the Netherlands is higher than in foreign countries, regarding the internship. So that is a consideration every student should make for themselves.

What is your thesis about?

My thesis is about the old Zoo located in Emmen. The zoo is going to move to a location outside of town. The old zoo will be not closed, but the destination will be different. The plans are for the old zoo to become a ‘people’s park’ in 2016. The ‘people’s park’ will be designed to accomodate different kinds of accommodations and leisure activities. Besides that, activities will be organized. The goal of this park is to attract visitors. The plans for the zoo in Emmen are researched by different students of Stenden. My thesis is especially about what is required in order to organize good events and which strategies there are to design a good program during different kinds of events.

Why did you choose for this thesis subject?

My previous thesis was very difficult, so I went to Pietrick Wiersma to talk about another subject for the thesis. She came up with the idea to do the thesis about the zoo in Emmen.

What was subject?

interesting

about

this

I was exited about this subject because I had been to the zoo a couple of times so I was curious about the plans. Besides that, it was appealing because it was a project separated from an internship. Which was good, because I had already finished my internship. Another thing that appealed to me, was that it is a topic in which I can use a lot of my own creativity.

When you finish your thesis, will you stop or will you be helping to complete the project at the former Emmen Zoo? I think it would be nice to stay involved in the project, because I see that this project has many possibilities and it requires creativity to make this project possible. It is a concept that can go anywhere from now. That is why I am interested in being involved in the organization.

What does a normal day look like during your thesis period?

I try to work two days per week on the thesis, because I am dependent on the feedback I receive. I am waiting now on feedback for my plan of approach, so at the moment I cannot continue. But when I can work on it, I work from home.

Would you recommend an internship in a foreign country to other students? Yes! It is a unique and special experience so I would really recommend it!

Leeuwarden Capital of Culture in 2018 By Laura Schippers & Jessie Treep - As you all know, Leeuwarden will be the Capital of Culture in the year 2018. However, what most of you probably do not know is how a city can get such a title and what the benefits are for a city besides a few good and interesting events. The competition was set up in 1985. From that year on, each year, one or several cities have been granted the title Capital of the year. The city that will be chosen will get the chance to show its cultural life and cultural developments to tourists and its own citizens. In the year 2018 Leeuwarden will be the Capital of Culture. If a city wants to be the Capital of Culture , they have to follow a procedure. First of all, they have to send a tender with information about the high artistic culture events they want to organize to the State of Secretary. Besides that, they have to fill in a questionnaire. This way the jury can eliminate cities which have no potential to become the Capital of Culture . The cities that have potential will be visited by the jury to see the city themselves so they have a more objective view of the city. The cities often have to adjust their proposals they made before.

The chosen city will get the chance to show it’s cultural life and development to tourists and its own citizens After visiting the cities and adjusting their proposal, the Capital of Culture will be chosen. Leeuwarden and Velatta will be the Capitals of Culture in 2018. To be able to raise the international profile of the cities and boost tourism it is 12

important for the cities to make the title a success. With the title Leeuwarden Capital of Culture 2018, Leeuwarden wants to develop three major European themes. These themes are the following: - Sustainability of Culture and Ecology - Relationship between City and Countryside - Ethnic and Cultural Identity and Diversity Besides these three major themes, the city also would like to reach other goals. An example is that they want 75 percent of the citizens to be proud of their own city and participate in the program. Another goal Leeuwarden wants to achieve is to attract three million extra visitors. Also creating ‘Mienskip’ before and after the project is one of the priorities. Furthermore, they want to involve everyone in this project, for example the cultural organizations, the local citizens, the businesses and all the stakeholders.

Propedeuse Ceremony by Stura LM

On Tuesday the 2nd December, it was finally the day! All the Leisure Management Students from Stenden Hogeschool Leeuwarden, which within the last six months managed to earn all 60 European Credits of the first year of study, were invited to participate in the Propedeuse Ceremony. From 16 pmon, the students with their parents and friends were invited in the lobby area. Soon, nicely dressed students and their guests could be spotted all over the place, enjoying coffee and cake as well as orange juice and champagne. Students introduced their guests to each other, where chatting and taking pictures and the last guests arrived for the ceremony to begin. It was half an hour from when the first guests arrived and the last students signed their certificate to take a seat in the auditorium. In the auditorium was the Study Start Week movie of 2013 playing, while the students and their guests were finding a seat. When everybody was seated, Martin Groters kicked off the Propedeuse Ceremony with an introduction speech. All the students, parents and friends were told by Martin Groters, how great it is that they achieved all the 60 European Credits of the first year and could received their Propedeuse. The first group of students was asked to come forward and received their Propedeuse Certificate with a flower and a personal note, handed out by the study coaches. After the first certificates were handed out and pictures were taken, a short movie about the previous year’s Leisure 25 Event was shown, underlining the existence of the Leisure Studies at Stenden Hogeschool for 25 years. When the movie was finished the second group was called forward to also receive their Propedeuse Certificates and flower from the Study Coaches. Again, many pictures were taken, followed by a long applause. Martin had some final words for everyone and asked Leo Glas, Chairman of the Student council (StuRa LM), to say a few words. He himself also received his Propedeuse that day and talked about he feeling of receiving this piece of paper and the future of the study.

“Soon, nicely dressed students and their guests could be spotted all over the place”

While after the ceremony, most students from the Dutch stream took the opportunity to go out for dinner with parents and friends, a small circle of mainly international students gathered in the nearby Hestia Student Lounge. Here, the students were provided by the Student Council of Leisure Management with free drinks as well as Muffins and Pizza “all you can eat”. We want to use the opportunity to once again congratulate all the students that received their Propodeuse. Well done!

Minors Sport Management: sports and managing by Jeroen van Vliet

It is almost that time of the year: its time to make a choice and sign yourself in for a minor. Are you a sportive type and do you like to sport? In that case the minors ‘Sport Management’ and ‘ Sports Sponsorship , Sports Marketing and Adventure Sports (SSAS)’ are a really good choice for you! These minors are open for all students of Stenden.

Sport Management

During the minor Sport Management (15 EC) you learn among other what sport culture entails, how the sport is organized in the country of your origin how and why sports become popular, how to run a sport organization with volunteers and why the government wants us to get a lot of medals. Another case were you going to deal with is the question why the Netherlands necessarily wants to organize the Olympic Games or the World Cup football. Besides this you are also going to organize sport clinics. For example cricket, lacrosse, hockey, circuit training, badminton or an other sport.

Sport Sponsorship, Sport Marketing and Adventure Sport (SSAS)

During the minor Sports Marketing, Sports Sponsorship and Adventure Sports (SSAS 15EC) you are going to write a strategic marketing plan and apply this on a sport company of your own choice. Examples of companies are FC Bayern Munich, Kรถlner Haie, TT Assen, KLM Open (golf), Fitnesscentrum Leeuwarden or any other company of your choice. In Sports Sponsorship you are going to negotiate to help SC Heerenveen with a new sponsor. You negotiate for 5 weeks at the Abe Lenstra Stadium with an account manager of SC Heerenveen. You are the one who represent SC Heerenveen and the account manager represents the potential new sponsor. During the section Adventure Sports you are going to organize GPS tracking/games, Urban Adventure in Groningen, map and compass assignments, ultimate survival, boot camp, abseiling, via ferrata, mountain biking and canoeing on location.

You will finish your minor in the Ardennes or the Sauerland with the Adventure Sports week. During this trip, safety is a really important aspect for a sport manager, and in this case you are the sport manager.

Open for all students of Stenden

Both of the minors are open for all of the students of Stenden University. Sport Management is offered in module 3 and SSAS in module 4. You can only do the minor SSAS if you have done the minor Sport Management. Leisure students who have follow both minors and who have done an internship in the sports sector, graduate in Sport Management and Leisure Management. Students of other courses may also apply for a position in the sports business.

Interview Alumna

by Jessie Treep

Elisabeth Verkuyl Elisabeth Verkuyl studied Leisure Management at Stenden University Leeuwarden and graduated in 1995. She has been a freelancer for thirteen years now. So it is time to meet her at ‘the Waag’ in Leeuwarden.

Why did you choose Leisure Management?

After I finished my HAVO I had many different jobs in foreign countries. However, after these different jobs my parents told me that it was time to follow a proper study. I looked in the study course catalogue and saw some interesting studies. One of these studies was TVW, Toegepaste Vrijetijds Wetenschappen, which is called Leisure Management now. I did some research on the education and decided to sign in.

What do you remember the most about Leisure Management? What I remember the most is that it was a broad education, you learn about a lot of subjects. Besidesthat, the subjects are connected in a logical way. You didn’t have to do separate assignments, but in one block, you write papers, do presentations in which it all comes together. What I learned the most of was PBL. You get together in small groups and solve problems together. I even use that in my currentjob.

Do you think it is a disadvantage that you cannot apply more specific things in your work? Yes, but on the other hand you can acquire it yourself through a course or a master. So I think it is good that you learn basic skills and after that you can specialize yourself. Besides that, maybe you don’t know exactly what you will do later. If I look back, I would have wanted to do more with communication. So then it is better to learn it yourself after the ‘basic’- education.

You are still using the PGO techniques?

We understood you are working as a freelancer?

Are the things you learn at Leisure Management relevant for the work field?

Which project are you most proud of?

Yes, the PBL system is very useful. Together with colleague students we solved the issue’s and tasks by using each other and thereby using each others strengths. By using all talents you can reach the endresult. You also learn that you cannot work in harmony with everybody. You find out which style of working suits you most en what you can use in your daily working life.

From my point of view you acquire good basic management skills in the LM program. You learn how to deal with different kind of problems and how to think critically about certain subjects. It is not that I, for example, use business economics during my work. It is more the general way of thinking you learn during the education, which you can also use in your daily job. You have the basic knowledge and then learn more specific subjects in your work. 18

Yes! I have been a freelancer for thirteen years now. That means that companies can hire me for a certain project or as interim colleague. My role as freelancer has most of the time something to do with communication or a production of an event. The time I spend on project varies. Sometimes I work a yearand a half on a project, and sometimes two months.

The project I am the most proud of, is a project which I did when I had just finished Leisure Management. The project was called ‘Megafestatie’ and it was organized in Jaarbeurs Utrecht. The reason why I am so proud of this project is because in that time there were only traditional exhibitions. Megafestatie was an innovative and interactive event for young people. Now you see many more interactive events, but in that time it was something completely new.

Can you tell something about your current project?

Currently I am working as a freelancer for the Diabetes Fonds as a project leader. There are differentkind of ways to communicate with the public and the target group. To tell the story of Diabetes in an interactive way, we came up with The Escape Room. In the Escape room you lock yourself up voluntary. By solving different kinds of puzzles and mysteries you can escape from the room. If you have diabetesyou live with problems that have to be solved every day. Questions like ‘how is your blood pressure?’,‘how much insulin have you already had?’ and ‘how much food did I had today?’ All these questions during the day feel like a riddle for diabetes patients. We use the Escape room to give people information about diabetes and make them more aware of the seriousness of the disease every day.

How do you deal with problems during an event?

If there is a problem during an event, I follow a certain procedure. I first analyze the situation. After that I look at all the possibilities for solving the problem. When the possibilities are clear, I assess them. Then, in the end, I can make a decision. When you are dealing with a problem, it is important that you make your decision quickly. Often, it is not important what the decision is, but that the decision is made.

Would you recommend to work as a freelancer?

Yes I would recommend it, however I would not recommend to start as a freelancer right after your study. I think it is a better idea to gain experience before you start. After your study you can work and maybe follow a few courses. This way you can gain and build up experience, which is very important forcompanies.

“From my point of view you acquire good basic management skills in the LM program”

Interview with Cigdem Zantingh

by Laura Schippers

What is the approach for the different projects you work on?

In the projects of the lectureship we work multidisciplinarily. This means that we work with students, companies and lecturers from different sectors. We started with four leading companies and slowly but surely many more followed. Besides that we also work at multiple levels level and we believe in Co-makership. This means that we work with students from different levels and from different years. The students from Alfa-college are mbo and those from Stenden hbo.

We are the only lectureship MBO/HBO in the Netherland and it doesn’t only focus on the province of Drenthe

Introduction I studied Business Economics at de University of Berlin. 20 years ago I moved to the Netherlands. For a couple of years I work as a lecturer at Alfa-college and I specialize in Leisure Hospitality. Besides that I am also responsible for the connection between MBO and HBO. For three years Ihave now also been a lecturer at Stenden University Emmen. I give lessons in problem based learning, research and German. Besides that I am also a member of the research group of the lectorship of Dr. Ineke Delies. I am also the project leader of the community of practice which is a project by both the Alfa-college and Stenden for the province of Drenthe. Besides that I started also, together with Herman Blom, as a project leader for the project Rijnland Academie from Alfa-college and Stenden University. Despite the fact that I really like doing all the different projects, I believe that it is still really important to give lessons to the students. I think having knowledge, transferring it and applying it is really important. 22

It is really importantfor us that all of our projects are multidisciplinary, multilevel and in Co-maker ship During meetingsthere are always students and lecturers from both schools and someone from the partner firms. In this way we work with a bottom up system instead of an top down system. Another feature is that we always work on innovative issues. Partner firms can approach us to do a research, but it has to be a research into a current issue in the industry. Right know we have more than 30 national and international partner firms, including Hochschule OsnabrĂźck.

What is the Family Event?

The request to organize the Family Event came from geopark Terravita. The director of this and five more geoparks, and also a partner of our lectureship, wanted to have more recognition of the geoparks between the Netherlands and Germany. The Family Event is organised in geopark de Hondsrug.

There were three Dutch families and three German families who did a survival for three days in this area between the Netherlands and Germany. To see how this event was and what the students think of it, you can visit www.ikdrenthe. nl. It was a very successful event with a lot of partner companies. The arrangement can be booked in Germany. This event was organised by the students of Alfa-college and Ad Leisure Management students from Stenden University in Emmen and I was the project leader. We worked with a buddy system during this project. This means that the third year students supervised the first year students during the start up of the project. In this way the first year students obtain knowledge about how to organize an event and the third year students learn how to be a leader. The students also went to all the meetings we had for the event. By doing this we create the possibility for the students to expand their network and to give them a small head-start in their future careers. My role during this event was to lead the project and to stay in contact with all the partner firms. Also during this event we work in a multidisciplinary, multilevel and Co-makership driven fashion and we focus on team players. It is, especially for the students of Alfa-college, a great opportunity to work on a project like this. In this way they can prepare for an education at hbo level.

Can you explain what the Rijnlandacademie project entails?

The Rijnlandacademie project is a collaboration between Alfa-college and Stenden University. It is a part of the executive board. The core activity of this project is to promote German language and culture. This project shows the students the opportunities on the other side of the border. Right know the unemployment in this region is 12 percent, but the unemployment of the youth is around 20 percent. In Germany in the Emsland region this is ‘only’ 2.8 percent. We would like to contribute to lower this rate in the Netherlands. We are looking for things or lessons we have to offer so the students could also work in Germany after they graduate. The Rijnlandacademie does not only focus on the tourism and recreational sectors but also on the educational sector in general. The students of Alfa-college are already being taught German language and culture with a focus on culture. We teach them the work ethos of Germany, jargon and the difference between the Dutch culture and German cultures. It is a fact that Germany needs a lot of professionals and we would like to deliver these professionals by preparing them in the right way. We do not obligate our students to go to Germany, but we want to give them the possibility to do so if there is not enough employment in the Netherlands. Of course, for us it is better if they stay in the region, because this is of added value to Drenthe.

Can you tell us about your function as a member of the research group from the lectorship of Dr. InekeDelies?

The research group consist of 18 members, also including those from Stenden Leeuwarden, such as Steffen Fokkema and Edou Hilverda. It is a research group for tourism and the focal points are health-care, living and leisure. Here, again, we work in a multidisciplinary, multilevel and in Co-maker shiporiented way. It is a dynamic team with lecturers from different sectors like leisure, healthcare and engineering. But also students from different sectors, different schools and different levels. We meeteach every Thursday and discuss our researches. My research is on tourism and recreation in the regionwith the “Euregio” [ region spread across multiple countries] as a focul point. The philosophy which we use, apply and done research on in the lectureship in region Drenthe will get a transfer to region Groningen.

“It is a fact that Germany needs a lot of professionals and we would like to deliver these professionals by preparing them in the right way”

Fieldtrip of the second years Almost all the first- and second year students are curious and excited about their trip to Disneyland Paris. On the other hand, the third- and fourth year students are looking back at a fun time in Disneyland. This is why we decided to collect some articles about the excursion to Disneyland Paris. Theo de Jong, the teacher who went to Disneyland together with the students , will tell something about the experience. After this, three students will share their experience regarding to the fieldtrip. Since seven years, Disneyland Paris has been highlight for the students and teachers from the second year of the study Leisure Management. The first few years, the excursion was organized together with the people of the education ‘MEM’ and the maximum amount of students who could enjoy the trip was 300! Four years ago Leisure Management decided to organize the trip for only the Leisure students.

“Disneyland takes first place when it comes to leading Leisure companies in the world” In the module ‘Leisure Experience’, concept development and commercializing the product are central subjects. Since Disneyland takes first place when it comes to leading Leisure companies in the world, it is a great opportunity to go there and see how things work when creating an experience for a certain target group.

24

Even though the Disney excursion has always provided a great time for all participants, there have been some developments regarding to the excursion. The last few years, different aspects have been added to the program, in order to create a special experience where the students get to know Disneyland Paris and the company’s working method. Besides the working method, the students get to know the special world of the Magic Kingdom and the Walt Disney studios. During the excursion the students organize an experience tour with small groups, to show each other different sides of the park. During this experience tour, storytelling and attention for details are very important. Besidesthat, the students get a lecture from Mrs. Christine Tweedly, an imagineer/story teller within Disneyland Paris. She shows how imagineers are working and how the development of a concept leads to an unique experience. The last few years, the students mentioned that a visit to the city Paris would create extra value of the excursion, so we tried to implement this into the program.. This year we organized an excursion where we would visit Paris for two days, and after that we would visit Disneyland Paris for two days as well. The Leisure Experience module is, in the first place, a module about marketing and therefore a visit to the world’s most attractive city would suit the program. Paris is famous because it the city has a position in the top three of most visited cities and has a strong city branding. To gather knowledge on these themes, we visited the Paris Bureau for Tourism and Congresses. We also organized a tour through Paris and we visited the Eiffel tower. After two days in Paris, we also went to the Davy Crockett Ranch for two days. The Davy Crockett Ranch is the place where the students stay and sleep during the Disneyland excursion. The tour was a successful combination of education, experience and fun in an international setting.

Anne van Keulen

The trip to Disneyland and Paris was awesome! We started the trip on Monday in Paris. In the evening we went to the Eiffel tower, which was all lit up. What a beautiful view. After this we went to a little and cozy pub. Tuesday the teachers arranged a city tour. This city tour took us to buildings like Louvre and the Notre Dame. We also visited the Eiffel tower again. At the end of the day we went to a Christmas market at the Champs Elysees. It was very fun!

To conclude everything; I have experienced Paris and Disneyland as a great time. The city itself and the park are really awesome. Wow, I would love to go back there again

Unfortunately, we had to leave Paris, but we were not ready to go home yet. Cause from Paris we traveled to Disneyland Paris. When we arrived we cooked our self dinner and had a party in the evening. The two days in Disney were amazing! We went to many attractions. It was not busy in the park regarding visitors, which made it only more attractive for us. Therefore, there were hardly any waiting lines. Besides that, we saw Tigger, Winnie the Pooh and the Disney Dreams show. The Disney Show is a show with all different kinds of lights projected on the Disney Castle. Very impressive.Whatmade it extra fun was the atmosphere. Disneyland Paris was entirely decorated with Christmas lights, Christmas trees, music and fake snow. Besides visiting the attractions and enjoying the Christmas atmosphere, we also had to do an assignment. One of the assignments was organizing a tour for our fellow students in Disneyland. Our tour took place in Discoveryland, a part of Disneyland The Discoveryland looks like the future with all different kinds of spaceships. Our main attraction was the Space Mountain: Mission 2. Besides that, our tour took the fellow students to the Buzzlightyear Lazerblast. We have split our group in two sub groups. These groups had to make assignments during the tour. In the end the winner of the two groups was named.

Nena van Tricht

On Monday the 23th of November we left Leeuwarden and went off to Paris. When we arrived in Paris, we firstly took part in a lecture from the Bureau for Tourism and Congress, which was arranged by school. After this lecture we went to the hostel and we had the whole evening off, as well as the whole Tuesday. Therefore we had enough time to get to know Paris on our own, but Theo de Jong, Steffen Fokkema and Jorrit de Waal also arranged a tour through Paris for all of us, in which we couldparticipate if we wanted.

The day after, which is the 25th of November 2014, a lecture about Disneyland Paris was scheduled. The next few hours, from 14.00 O till 16.00, it was time for our experience tour. The tour went well, but of course some things went a bit different than expected. At 16.30 o’clock we had to participate in the experience tour which the student group from Emmen prepared for us. This also went pretty good. When the last tour was finished, we went out of the park to find a nice place to grab something to eat.

Tuesday evening the time had come to go to the Davy Crockett Ranch, the Disney adventure could now begin! After a good night of sleep we went to Disneyland Paris in the early morning. When we got there, it was time to prepare our ‘experience tour’. After the tour we went to see a lot of the park and we went in all different kinds of attractions. Time flew by and it was soon time to have dinner. However, since all of the restaurants at the park were closed already, we could not have a proper dinner anywhere and we ended up eating a hotdog.

“However, we did not want to miss the final show at the park, so we ran back to the park to see it” When the beautiful show came to an end, everybody went back to the Davy Crockett Ranch. There we did a pub quiz with the entire group of students and the winner of the ‘best experience tour’ was announced afterwards. We came in second! After this, a fun after party was organised. To sum things up: it was an awesome week in which we had to walk a lot but sleep less, we ate unhealthy food and we had a lot of fun. Oh yeah, of course we also had a to do a little bit for school...

Sylvia Bouwman

Paris is absolutely a beautiful city. I think it was a big plus that the trip to Paris was included this year. In Paris we got a nice tour through the city from the teachers and we ended our tour at the Eiffel Tower. After this tour we continued our journey to the Davy Crockett Range. The Davy Crockett Range is located about fifteen minutes from Disneyland. It consists of a bungalow park ,surrounded by a large forest which is a bit creepy during night time. On Wednesday we started with the preparation of the tour. Unfortunately not everything went as planned before. Our main attraction closed at half past four which was just the time that our tour should start. This meant that we had to change our complete tour. Also on the day of the tour itself we had a few setbacks.

The story teller of our group was dressed up, but then Disneyland refused access because the story teller was too dressed up in their eyes. When we had solved this problem, we found out that also the parade was on the same time as our tour. Fortunately the tour went very well and the group did not mention any of the setbacks. Besides the tour we had enough time to discover the rest of Disneyland. It was a real great experience and we got to know everyone better during this trip. Overall it was a stressful, educative and definitely fun and unique experience

AD students

by Laura Schippers & Jessie Treep

Rosanne

Rosanne Teekman is a third year student of Leisure Management. She started with the Associate Degree programme and is now doing the bachelor program. We had an interview with her about her choice why she decided to go further with her bachelor programme.

Why did you choose for the Associate Degree programme? After high school I have done a MBO study for three years. After that half a year working and the other half of the year a study . I had to choose if I wanted to work or do another study. Because I didn’t want to work already and did not wanted to study for four years because I thought that was too much, I decided to go for the AD programme. It seemed like the ideal option. In this way I was able to do a study at HBO level, but not four years long.

Did you notice any differents between the AD programme and the bachelor program?

In the first year there were no difference at all between the AD students and the bachelor students. You are in mixed classes and you follow the same study programme. Actually this also counts for the second year, the only difference is that you are a bit busier with your final report en final presentation. Besides this final report en presentation there are no more differences between the two programs. Everybody will have the same learning material and also the level of education is the same.

What made you decide to go further with the Bachelor programme? It has taken a while before I made the choice to go for the Bachelor programme. The past two years went by so fast! I still like to study, and I really like the fact that I’m going to do an internship in the fourth year. I decided that I do not want to miss that part because I think it is really interesting to put my knowledge into practice. When they asked me during my final presentation If I was a competent assistant Leisure manager, I got some doubts. I was not sure if I all ready wanted to work and if I was ready to do so. I wanted to expand my knowledge and I wanted to do the internships. I think it is really important to have some experience in the work field, by doing an internship or something, before starting the work.

What was your final assignment?

For my final assignment I had to write a report that proved 28

that I owned all the competences of an Associate Degree Leisure student. There was a total of six competences which you had to work out by examples. You also had to write a report about the Leisure Project internship. This report was about the activities you have done, the experience you´ve got and your opinion about it. Furthermore you had to write a final report where you reflect on yourself, the way you see yourself and your opinion about you as a competent assistant Leisure manager. The last assignment was to present all these findings in a final presentation.

If you can do it all over again, would you make the same choice for the AD Leisure programme? Yes, definitely. I really liked it and I think it is a great plus that you can split your study into two parts. If something happens in the third year and you can’t finish your study because of this, you still have your AD diploma. So the last two years where not for nothing. I would also choose again for the Leisure Management education, because I think it is a comprehensive education, which starts general and end up very specific in one sector.

Would you recommend the AD Leisure Management program to others? Yes, I would recommend this study to others. Especially because of the benefits I mentioned before. Another big benefit I did not mention earlier is that you always can choose to go further with the bachelor program. So it do not have to end after two years if you are not sure about your choice anymore.

Willem Jan

Willem Jan Bultje is a second year student of Leisure Management. He will get his Associate Degree at the end of this module. We talked with him about his final assignment and his plans for the future.

Why did you choose for the Associate Degree programme?

I have chosen the Associate Degree program -me in the first place because I have done several educations before I signed in for Leisure Management. Besides that, I am already 24 years old. I like the Leisure industry, but didn’t want to study for four fulltime years.

Have you thought about going further with the Bachelor programme after finishing your AD?

It was clear from the beginning that I would finish my AD and then do something else, it has never been the intention to go for the Bachelor after all. I have to admit, I hesitated a little bit. But I decided that it was the best thing for me to finish by AD and then do something else.

What are your plans for after your study Leisure Management?

My first plan was to go to South France so I could work there and see the world at the same time. But yesterday I thought, what am I going to learn when I am working behind the bar? So now I do not have a concrete plan anymore. Maybe I am first going on a holiday, and then start with applying for a job. I would like to stay in the North of the Netherlands, because that is where I grew up. A job that has something to do with communication, quality control or HRM has my preference. At least, I am sure that I am not going to study further. I have studied for six years now and it is time for something new.

Do you think you supplement your Associate Degree programme with the Bachelor programme in the future? No, the chance is very small because I am done with studying. Besides that, the loan system is also important in my choice not to study further. And I am convinced, that having experience can get you far. If I go working after finishing the Associate Degree programme, I also learn many things. In that way maybe I can eventually work as a manager instead of a assistant manager.

Would you recommend the Associate Degree programme Leisure Management to others? Yes, absolutely, of course, I have to wait until I got a job. But it is hard to find work at the moment, even when you did the Bachelor programme. Also if you are a bit older, I would recommend this program. It is a good alternative when you want to study, but not too long.

However, I should not recommend the Associate Degree programme to people who start in February instead of September. I think it is easier to start in September, because that group is bigger and I felt that sometimes we are a bit separated from the other Leisure students. Besides that, some lectures where scheduled wrong, so it felt like we were missing some information about the AD programme.

Have you mentioned differences between the AD programme and the Bachelor programme? In the first year I did not mentioned any differences between the AD and the Bachelor programme. Also the second year was most of the time the same. The most important difference is the final presentation and the final report you have to make. I have to elaborate my competencies and give evidence of how I have developed this. Besides that, I have to mention the goals which ones I have achieved, and which ones I haven’t. This comes all together in the final presentation. In the end I had to make a report about the presentation, and after that I was finished!

I-study

by Jessie Treep

Every student at Stenden knows Istudy. Most students think you can only go there to make a reservationfor a classroom. But did you know that you can go to Istudy for many more things? First of all, you can arrange your registration at Istudy. For example, when your registration is not complete jet, Istudy can help you further. Besides that, you can also go there when it turns out your study is not as perfect for you as you initially though and you want to complete the de-registration. Another thing for which you can go to Istudy, are your results from progress and other parts of the study. Most of the time, we, the students, just check our results by ourselves behind our laptop, withsome beer or a cup of tea in our hand. However, if you do not understand something or you think something is not right, you can go to Istudy for some help.

30

The international student at Stenden can go also to Istudy for some extra help. Besides the occasions above, these students can go to Istudy for information about health service and insurance. Istudy can furthermore give you information about your visa, permits and immigration matters. On top of all this, we recommend the international students at Stenden Emmen to go to Istudy, because they can help arrange accommodation for you. Saves you a lot of time!

Talent Scout by Wilco Camp

On the 27th of November the Event trade association IDEA organised the IDEA Talent Scout event in the Fabrique in Utrecht. Four Stenden Event Management Minor students competed with 36 fellow students from other universities to become the Event Talent for 2014. 40 Students and their teachers from different universities(HKU, HU, Fontys, Stenden, HvA, InHolland) travelled to the Fabrique for a day full of inspiration. Eventbranche. nl sketched a brief image of the future of events and event marketing and presented the fifteen biggest trends in events for the next year to the Talents of these universities. Then nine IDEA-agencies presented themselves during a short pitch. In the afternoon it was the students turn. They got the chance to speed date with the agencies. During the search for their perfect match they were also presented with a high pressure assignment in which they had to come up with a concept for brand activation. The jury and the Talent’s teachers were positively impressed by the Talent’s elevator pitches. This generation has a talent for public speaking. Some students exceeded in showing a clear vision of the event industry and of their resumes. According to Wilco Camp “The quality and level of the students was inspiring. For the attending students this event is a great opportunity to get in contact with outstanding event agencies. Some of them have initiated the first contacts for a great internship in the near future.” Stenden was represented by , Willemijn Leijs, Anna Speerstra, Thomas Doeve (IHMS) and Kees Gunnink(LMSL). “Although we didn’t make it to the top three, attending this event was well worth it” says Kees. A proud Anne continued saying “Al of us received several compliments from the agencies, about professional conduct, originality and problem solving abilities in the high pressure assignment. Our PBL background has helped us tremendously with this.” The Minor Event management will certainly nominate a few upcoming Event Talents to attend the IDEA talent scout event in 2015.

Progress Why are we doing this? The progress test

Perhaps not the most favorite part of the program amongst Leisure Management students. Nonetheless it is an essential element within the program in order to get the diploma and certainly here to stay. So what is the idea behind this way of testing and how can students best prepare for their next progress test? Progress testing is meant as a longitudinal, feedback oriented assessment tool which tests whether the (cognitive) learning goals of the whole curriculum are mastered sufficiently. The test is administered to all students of the program simultaneously. The test samples the complete knowledge-domain expected of new graduates upon completion of the Leisure Management course, regardless of the year level of the student. The idea is that the differences between students’ knowledge levels show in the test scores. In other words: the further a student has progressed in the curriculum the higher his or her scores are expected to be. It is mainly for this reason that progress testing is applied within Leisure Management instead of administering separate tests for all subjects. Due to the repetition of knowledge testing regarding all the separate subjects, long term knowledge and knowledge retention is fostered, because item content remains relevant long after the knowledge has been learned. Additionally testing a student’s progress regarding knowledge development in different areas of the program is useful for personal professional development (PPD) meetings. With their studycoach student’s can discuss the areas of the program in which they perhaps excel or where they need to put in extra effort.

32

How to prepare

Often students approach us with the question: how best to prepare for the tests? As questions are related to the complete knowledge-domain of the program and are linked to the final (cognitive) learning goals of the curriculum this way of testing discourages studying for one specific test. Instead continuous learning is important. Therefore students need to keep track of all information and knowledge that has been discussed during PBL and CBL sessions, during other classes and in lectures. Also it is important to stay up to date about developments in the industry and the field of Leisure Management. So keeping a good overview of all literature sources that were discussed during the followed modules, as well as keeping good notes of visited lectures is vital. Thelogbook and reflection reports students need to make throughout the years can help in this.

“The

idea

the

is

that

differences

between

students’

knowledge levels show in the test scores”

Regarding the process of taking the test itself the following can also be useful to take into account. In order to pass the test, of course it is important to have sufficient knowledge, however you can’t know everything.

If you wish to score optimally it is just as important to have a clear idea of the things you do know and do not know Not filling in enough questions leads to a deduction of points, however guessing too much can also negatively affect your score. Additionally ‘wrong’ knowledge also leads to wrong answers, costing points. If you have difficulty passing the test it is therefore vital to evaluate your score of past tests. This can be done by requesting your answer form from the test office and going through the test with your studycoach, as well as by checking your individual scoringreport on ELO after each test. In this way you can get a better idea about the subjects in which you score high and the areas in which you score low. This will better prepare you for the next test and will prevent you to make the same mistakes twice.

Feedback

In order to provide qualitative tests it is important to provide us as coordinators with feedback on individual test questions and the process of testing. Eventhough questions (and provided answer possibilities) are checked before they enter the database, mistakes can occur. By providing feedback we can ensure that questions containing mistakes or questions not meeting the criteria for progress testing, if needed, will be taken out or adapted for future tests. The feedback will be discussed withthe lecturers that created the questions and evaluated on all relevant criteria. Based on this, required steps will be taken. If you have feedback, please ensure you provide this in writing by email to progress.test.lm@ stenden.com within 5 workingdays after the test. Then this feedback can still be taken into account for possible adaptation of the answer key and/or the cancellations of questions before the results are published. To conclude we would like to wish all Leisure Management students good luck with their progress tests. If ever you have questions regarding the test do not hesitate to contact us at the above emailadress! Regards, Jochem Jansen and Jeroen van Vliet Coordinators progress test

The module @WORK

Al Eureka BHE Music Group

by Brigitte van der Veldt

One of the modules the Bachelor students will get is the module @WORK. Most of the students do not know what they have to expect during this module. That is why we made an overview about the module @WORK The module @WORK is a module which is created for the third year Leisure Management students. This module is offered four times a year so there are enough possibilities for the students to plan their third year at their own choice. The Module consists three components. The student is going to do a mini internship where he or she gets operational experiences in the Leisure sector. Besides that the student is going to do a researchand will be working on his or her personal future where personal leadership and personal branding are the main subjects. Before you get your internship, you have to apply for three projects through a motivation letter. The module coordinator chose which person get which projects. After you know in which project you have been placed, you need to call the organization supervisor for an appointment. After your first meeting you are going to work at the organization. You will work for 168 hours, so 24 hours a week during the module. Now you know more about @WORK, you are probably curious about the projects. Each module there are different projects. This module some students are busy with organizing the day of internationalization for the students off ROC Friese poort. Another project is ETFI, what stands for European Tourism Futures Institute. For this project two students are ordering the results of a research about the development of Bed & Breakfast. They have to import the results into the program SPSS, so in the end they can make tables and figures of the results. But this Leisure Magazine which is in front of you, is also made by two students of the module @WORK.

Student Event Game by Amber Herrewijn

‘Did we win?! Oh no, not again second place!’ Event Management lecturer Amber Herrewijn tries to hide her disappointment and congratulates the Stenden students on the great job they have done. ‘Well, maybe next year! Then we will travel to Nijmegen and again kick some ass! That Monday the 17th of November eight IHM and LM students and two lecturers from the minor Event Management 2 travelled to Deventer to participate in the StudentEventGame. During this game, organised by the Genootschap van Eventmanagers (a leading trade association in the Dutch event industry), seven universities battled for the title ‘event game talent of the year’. Second year Leisure student Jeantine de Kruyf joined a selected group of third year event students and reflected on the day; ‘After a long day we are finally in the train back to our home town Ljouwert. “It was a tough case to work on” concluded Peter Voogt (event manager at KPN). He introduced the assignment to the students at the start of the day: Develop a creative theme and concept for the Let’s Talk About Business-event 2015 of KPN. After a warm welcome and a great high tea lunch, the challenging 3,5 hours began to create, develop and present an unique concept. Just as with many (Stenden) students, the last 10 minutes were the most important and stressful minutes of the whole day! The event expert coach, Ment, was positively surprised by the group. ‘I have been involved in this game for 11 years now, but you hardly see such a professional and energetic team of students!

This is highly surprising considering this is the first time you guys team up’. The students of ‘Stenden Events’ worked like crazy and finalised a nice concept, just in time! Important learning points? Preparation is everything! And although we did not win, the experience was great. Hopefully next year the cup will be ours!’ Greetings from Jeantine de Kruyf, Henk Kooistra (LM), Thom Hoiting, Manouk van Roest, Brian de Heer, Yanique Tammenga, Sisera Warkor, Chris Klijnstra (IHM), Wilco Camp en Amber Herrewijn (module coordinators Event Management 2 The minors Event Management 1 & 2 are open for all economic students within Stenden. Students get the opportunity to join the StudentEventGame, the IDEA Talent Scout, the MPI Next Generation conference or other industry related activities

Open day Cosmo Academy by Jessie Treep

Besides making this Leisure Magazine, there was also something else we had to do, namely organizing an open door day for 25 Leisure & Hospitality Executive students of the Cosmo Academy. This open door day was meant to encourage these students to do another study after they finished their current one, by providing them with more knowledge about the Leisure Management study at Stenden University.

Six weeks before the date of the open door day, we started with the preparations. We wanted to give the students enough information, but we also wanted to do something interactive with them. After a few brainstorming sessions, we had the program all set up. After the planning of the program, we could continue with the preparations. We firstly had to make sure different kinds of teachers, who teach Problem Based Learning (PBL) or Management Skills, were going to be part of the program. Besides this, we wanted Dean Martin Groters to welcome the students with an introduction lecture. Also the lunch had to be arranged, the PBL case for the students had to be prepared and reservations for several classrooms had to be made. Before we knew it, it was the seventh of January, the date the open door day was scheduled. To be honest, we started our day a little bit nervous. Did we forget something? Will the teachers be on time? Are we sure the lunch is confirmed? All these questions came up and of course, something went wrong. The class that would tell the students something about the Young Entrepreneurship program of the first year of the study Leisure Management, had a change in their schedule and therefore they were not able to make it on time. Stress! We went to different kinds of teachers who teach Young Entrepreneurship, but they either had to teach a class or had other duties at the time the presentation was scheduled. So what to do now? We were lucky, Willem Boersma was able to tell something about the program! After this moment of stress, it was time to pick up the students from the train station. We took the bus from the train station to Stenden University and went to the canteen, where every student got a lunchbox. After this, the introduction lecture by Martin Groters took place, followed by the presentation of Willem Boersma, who told the students about the typical mistakes most groups make during the Young Entrepreneurship program. Also, two girls were showing the product they came up with during this program. Pietrick Wiersma then told the students about internships and the opportunity to go on Grand Tour or Exchange. After listening to all of these presentations, the students had a little break with a few drinks and some muffins. Then the fun could begin! The group was split into two smaller groups, one of which was going to do the PBL case. The other group was going to attend a Management Skills class. After half an hour the groups had to switch, so all students were able to do both activities. At the end of the day we showed the students the highlights of Stenden University. To be honest, we were glad the day was over. A lot of preparation was needed for this project and or course we were a bit nervous and wondering whether or not the students would like the open door day we had organized for them. Luckily for us, everyone was pretty happy and the students were enthusiastic about the education Leisure Management. Perhaps we will welcome a few of them next year!

Exchange of Joyce Posthumus As most of you know, you have the possibility to go on Grand Tour or Exchange in the third year. We talked with Joyce Posthumus, who is in Sweden right now, about her decision to go on Exchange. Furthermore, we also talked with Elsemiek Gerritzen about her journey in South Africa last year. When you are in your third year of your study at Stenden University, you have the possibility to go study abroad. Many students take part in the ‘Grand Tour’ and are moving to warm countries like Bali of South Africa, for half a year. Instead of taking part in the Grand Tour, I have chosen to go on an exchange to the cold, but beautiful country Sweden!

characteristics. The school is really involved with the (international) students. Furthermore, the courses they offer suit me very well. The courses I am going to do are: journalism, graphic design, photography and Swedish. I will be in Sweden from January until half of June. I am really excited to go to Sweden. It feels like an adventure, an adventure of my own. Of course I will miss home, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity I will not miss out on. Sincerely, Joyce Posthumus

Why go on an exchange? I decided to do this because I really wanted to do something with media. In thefirst three years of the study Leisure Management, media was not a big part of the education. However, media studies are being offered in the exchange program of Stenden. Stenden has connections with many universities around the world. All of these offer different kind of programs for exchange students and so did Sweden. Sweden is an innovative country in which media plays a big role. The mid university Sweden (which is the univer40 sity I am going to visit) appealed to me because besides it’s wide range of media courses, it also has international

Grand Tour of Elsemiek Gerritzen Today Elsemiek Gerritzen is a fourth year student, who traveled to South Africa last year for the minors ‘Innovative Tourism’ and ‘Lodge Management’. In the following article she speaks about her adventure. When I signed up for Leisure Management I also decided to go on Grand Tour. After doing some research, I decided to go to South Africa. This country really got my interest.

The beautiful nature, the wild animals and of course the minors. I was planning this trip long before we took off. Writing a ‘to do list’, booking flight tickets, arranging a study visa, arranging an internship for the fourth year, going to the doctor for vaccinations and organizing goodbye- parties. It was a lot of work, but I was so exited to go!

February the sixth of 2014, it was finally going to happen! We went to the airport, where we were supposed to fly to London Heathrow. From London Heathrow we should fly to Johannesburg, where we would take a new plane to Port Elizabeth, our final destination. However, this didn’t end the way it was planed. Cause a delay in the Netherlands, we were two hours to late in London. We went to the service counter, where the person told us that the plane had already left without us. That was pretty disappointing. Our flight was rebooked for the next day and a sweet hotel was arranged for us. It was an unexpected turn, but the next day we enjoyed our day in London with some sightseeing. After the second flight we landed in Port Elizabeth and took the bus to Port Alfred, the location of the campus. We went to the apartment, named Bottmill, which is the campus where all the Stenden students live. The campus looks good, but once in a while curious monkeys were walking right in front of our apartment. Studying in South Africa for half a year was a journey of a lifetime. A country you fall in love with, even if you do not want to. When there was no school, I explored the country. I have been on a few safaris, went swimming with sharks and I have bungeejumed on the highest bridge in the world! Besides that I rode on an elephant, cuddled with baby lions, went to Capetown and have seen the most beautiful places of the country. Describing all of my experiences of half a year in South Africa on just a few pages is impossible. However, I really recommend each of you to try everything, if you ever get the opportunity. Admire the beautiful country and experience the culture.

‘‘Don’t be afraid to give up the good, to go for the great’’ Do you want to receive more information about my adventure or when you have some questions, please sent an e-mail to elsemiekgerritzen@hotmail.com or you can read the travel stories at www.elsemiek.gaatverweg.nl
