AGEING

Bayer's ecosystem "tackles the ageing process"

German healthcare company, Bayer, is launching an ecosystem to support consumers as they age, comprising a supplement, app and biological age test.

Earlier this summer, Bayer launched a vitamin supplement called Age Factor Cell Defense, which includes key ingredients to help support cellular health and resilience, including an antioxidant from olive fruit extract, Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamins C and D, niacin and astaxanthin. (The supplement is awaiting FDA sign-off).

Exercise boosts cancerkilling white blood cells

Half an hour of exercise can increase the proportion of tumour-killing white blood cells in the bloodstream of breast cancer patients, according to a recent study from Finland.

The University of Turku studied 20 breast cancer patients who had just been diagnosed and not yet started their cancer treatments. The patients pedalled a bicycle ergometer for 30 minutes at a resistance of their own choosing. Blood samples were taken from the patients at rest before the pedalling, during the exercise and after the exercise.

Blood contains many different types of white blood cells, some of

which are cancer-destroying while some promote cancer. Analysis showed that the blood cell type which increased the most during exercise were the cancer-destroying cytotoxic T Cells. In contrast, the number of cancer-promoting regulatory T cells and myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) did not change.

Researchers also examined the proportions of different white blood cell types relative to the total white blood cell count, and found that the proportion of natural killer cells increased significantly, while the proportion of MDSC decreased.

Research: society must update perception of older people

Retirees of today are living more active, healthy and dynamic lifestyles than ever before and are switched on culturally and technologically, yet feel many excluded.

We urgently need to challenge how older people are both perceived and treated in this country

In a comprehensive study – The New Ageing Index 2024 – undertaken by home care company, Home Instead, 35 per cent of respondents believe that being old is like being cancelled. This rises to 43 per cent of women over 75, and frequently leads to a sense of isolation and loneliness.

Despite being the fastest growing cohort in society, 60 per

cent of older people feel ignored by fashion brands and 59 per cent by high street brands. They also feel culturally excluded, with more than half feeling that tv, cinema and music is rarely, if ever, aimed at them.

A futuristic zero-gravity bathing experience debuting in a London spa in 2025 is promising to allow guests to ‘float in music’
■ Wellness tech company Wavess helped create the multisensory pool
The multisensory pool aims to help guests achieve 'ultimate physical and mental relaxation'

The Mandrake, a five-star boutique hotel in London’s Fitzrovia district, will unveil a playful new spa in 2025, o ering guests a unique “physical and mental massage” hydrotherapy experience.

The 700sq m facility will launch with a Wavess Wellness Pool – a circular, multi-sensory immersion pool – designed to let guests “float in music and sacred vibrations” using specialist waterhaptic technology to make the pool vibrate with sound at low frequencies.

The zero-gravity flotation experience will be enhanced with soundscapes, chromotherapy and visuals to o er a full-body wellness experience.

Claimed to be a first in the wellness industry, the pool has been created through a partnership between Damu, immersive design studio Metaspheric and wellness technology company, Wavess.

Wavess founder and CEO Arny B Arnold claims that the experience will mimic how a baby experiences the world in the womb.

Fustok has enlisted his sister’s creative firm, Tala Fustok Studio, to design the spa which will only accommodate 12 people to guarantee an intimate and calm experience for every guest.

Tala Fustok Studio says it has conceptualised the spa as a “halcyon haven which aligns with The Mandrake’s otherworldly and ethereal aesthetic".

The studio’s design for the spa will continue the hotel’s playful design approach, contrasting light and dark.

Named Damu, after the ancient Sumerian god of healing, rebirth and medicinal plants, the spa will embody themes of transformation and renewal. Its healing philosophy will blend modern tech with ancient healing traditions.

Balneotherapy experiences

In addition to the Wavess Wellness Pool, Damu's wellness facilities will include thermal and wet experience areas, treatment rooms and a relaxation spaces.

One of the spa’s highlights will be its candlelit Mud Rasul, featuring micro-cement walls sculpted into rugged, rock-like surfaces illuminated by recessed and backlit lighting.

Here, couples will be able to partake in the Damu Ritual – an immersive balneotherapy experience that includes a steamroom, experiential shower and dual rain showers.

Guests will use various muds, algae and salt scrubs, each designed for specific body areas. The muds, sourced from the Austrian Alps, will be able to be enhanced with ethnobotanical extracts selected by each guest for a personalised experience.

For further relaxation, the Tranquillity Room, designed by landscape architect Bas Smets – creator of The Mandrake’s iconic hanging gardens – will feature suspended greenery and skylights to reflect the hotel’s botanical focus.

Damu will o er a range of non-invasive aesthetic treatments including Dermapen microneedling, collagen stimulation therapy (CST) and LED phototherapy.

Fustok, hotel founder and owner, commented: “I’m delighted we’re finally opening our Damu spa.

“The feeling guests will leave with will be euphoric and the addition of the spa will extend our existing creative ethos and core holistic values.”

He concluded: “There are many hotel spas out there, but The Mandrake always strives for innovation and creativity, and I believe Damu will deliver just that.” ●

State of play

UK wellness economy has soared to new heights – ranking fifth largest globally following $224bn valuation, according to a new GWI report

United Kingdom: Wellness Economy Sectors (2022)

■ The UK's three largest wellness sectors are Physical Activity, Public Health, Prevention and Personalised Medicine and Personal Care and Beauty Source:

The UK wellness industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, now ranked as the fifthlargest globally, following a brand new report released by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI).

The report, The Global Wellness Economy: United Kingdom, reveals that the UK’s wellness economy reached nearly US$224 billion in 2022, placing it fifth behind only the US, China, Germany and Japan, and punching way above its population of roughly 69 million, which ranks 21st globally.

Impressive growth

The UK wellness industry saw its valuation rise to a record US$170.5 billion in the pre-COVID-19 pandemic year of 2019, but like many markets, it contracted during the pandemic, shrinking to US$157 billion in 2020.

■ The GWI has designated the UK wellness economy as the fifth largest globally

Wellness is rapidly ascending in the UK, reflecting a growing national focus on holistic health and wellbeing

However, the sector has made a remarkable recovery, growing to US$223.83 billion in 2022. This rebound positioned the UK as the global leader in post-pandemic wellness market growth, reaching 131 per cent of its pre-pandemic value by 2022.

Among the top 25 wellness markets, the UK was one of the fastestgrowing since 2020, with a 19.4 per cent annual growth rate, second only to Mexico at 25.2 per cent.

Fastest growing sectors

Several UK wellness sectors showed remarkable growth from 2020 to 2022:

■ Wellness Tourism saw the sharpest increase, growing by 79 per cent annually – more than double the global average of 36 per cent – despite a 68 per cent contraction in 2020.

■ Public health, Prevention and Personalised Medicine surged by 45.3

per cent annually, driven largely by government investments, outpacing the global average of 6.6 per cent.

However, Workplace Wellness lagged behind, with a 4.1 per cent decline during this period.

“The UK has one of the world’s largest, most diverse and resilient wellness economies,” said Katherine Johnston and Ophelia Yeung, senior research fellows at the GWI.

“The British public and its visitors are very sophisticated wellness consumers.”

Yeung and Johnston added: “Not only are British companies innovators in spa, hospitality, fitness, beauty, wellness real estate and other wellness sectors, but the government is a global leader in pioneering wellness policies in physical activity, mental wellness, prevention and encouraging a healthy lifestyle for its population.”

UK wellness market by sector (2022)

The report highlights the size of key sectors in the UK wellness economy:

● Physical Activity: US$50.4 billion

● Public Health, Prevention and Personalised Medicine: US$44.87 billion

● Personal Care and Beauty: US$37.35 billion

● Healthy Eating, Nutrition and Weight Loss: US$36.35 billion

● Wellness Real Estate: US$23.37 billion

● Wellness Tourism: US$15.62 billion

● Traditional and Complementary Medicine: US$7.6 billion

● Mental Wellness: US$3.81 billion

● Spas: US$3.2 billion

● Workplace Wellness: US$2.72 billion
