Minor unveils new Phuket retreat

Minor Hotels has celebrated the launch of its new medi-wellness concept – Life by Anantara – and opened a retreat space at its Layan Phuket Resort in Thailand.

Rooted in the four elements of Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM) – earth, water, wind and fire – Life by Anantara was first announced in June and blends ancient Thai wisdom with advanced medical treatments, diagnostics, personalised nutrition and guided fitness for a holistic approach to wellbeing. The retreat’s core philosophy, known as the Life Method, incorporates four key wellness pillars: Longevity Medicine, TTM, Complementary Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine.

This launch not only introduces a new wellness brand for Anantara Hotels & Resorts but also marks Minor’s second new wellness concept

for 2024. In an exclusive interview with Spa Business, Minor Hotels CEO Dillip Rajakarier outlined plans for expanding the Life by Anantara concept.

Habia endorses Arif Isikgun’s therapist retail success training

Industry training authority Habia has, for the first time, endorsed a course dedicated to upskilling therapists in retail to help boost spas’ sales performance.

Called Retail Excellence and Sales Empowerment, the course has been developed by Arif Isikgun, CEO of Ai Beauty Consultancy, educator and beauty industry veteran.

Isikgun reports that the course has been shown to increase retail sales by 120 per cent, as verified through multiple case studies. “This growth directly impacts a spa’s bottom line by increasing turnover and profit margins with products already on the shelves,” he explains.

Developed over two years, the course draws on Isikgun’s

17 years of experience working with prestigious brands including Guerlain, L’Oreal, Sephora, Harrods, Selfridges and QVC.

Beyond driving sales, the course also aims to foster personal growth for therapists, enhancing their confidence, communication and ability to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues.

“It’s more than about profit,” says Isikgun. “It’s an investment in your team and in elevating the level of service your spa provides.”

Spas interested in the course are encouraged to get in touch for an initial discovery call to ensure the offering is the right fit for their needs – reach out to hello@aibeauty.co.uk.

Samantha Dunn to launch affordable DIY consultancy programme

Afirst-of-its-kind DIY consultancy programme to help entrepreneurs make the leap into the wellness world will launch in November.

Called WellBusiness Builder’s Academy, the new course was created by Samantha Dunn, who’s been a spa consultant for nearly 25 years and worked with established brands including Kamalaya and Chiva-Som.

In the latest issue of Spa Business, Dunn – who’s based in Sydney and was chair of the Australian Wellness Association until recently

– explains that she’s devised the programme to take entrepreneurs through the steps she takes as a professional consultant.

“Participants will effectively have their entire business mapped out,” she says.

Dunn envisions that the typical attendee will be someone wanting to start their first bricks-and-mortar spa or wellness business.

“Our aim is to provide an affordable way to educate, guide and support entrepreneurs.”

WITT unveils new wellness certification for hotels and resorts

Wellness in Travel & Tourism (WITT), an independent organisation composed of hospitality, wellness and travel specialists, has created a new wellness certification for hotels and resorts.

The WITT Certified award is designed to serve as a beacon of assurance, indicating that a property genuinely prioritises wellbeing, and to help set destinations apart in a competitive market.

“This seal provides hotels and resorts with a significant advantage in attracting travellers by offering objective and rigorous audits of their wellness amenities

and services,” said Robin Ruiz, company CEO and founder.

WITT has already certified more than 100 properties in North America, including locations run by well-known operators such as Four Seasons and The Ranch.

In late 2024, the company will debut a consumer-focused website, offering travellers an easy way to discover WITT-certified hotels.

“Think of us as the Michelin Guide for wellness travel,” said Ruiz. “Our website will empower consumers to travel confidently knowing that their expectations will be met.”

Wellness to play pivotal role in Minor Hotels’ ambitious global expansion strategy, says CEO Dillip Rajakarier

We want to make wellness attractive to everyone and educate people about living healthier and longer lives

Minor Hotels is on a trajectory for significant expansion, with plans to open 200 extra hotels by 2026. According to CEO Dillip Rajakarier, wellness is a cornerstone of the company’s growth strategy, as he explained in an exclusive interview with Spa Business (www. spabusiness.com/MinorHotels).

A subsidiary of Minor International (MINT), one of Asia's largest hospitality companies, Minor Hotels’ aggressive expansion plan will increase its global portfolio by nearly 40 per cent. Currently, the brand operates more than 70 spas across its 550 hotels, resorts and residences in 56 countries.

Plans already include the development of 10 additional spas and clinics by the end of 2024 as well as the launch of two new wellness brands: Life by Anantara and AvaniWell.

The significant expansion follows a record-breaking 2023 when Minor posted a core net profit of THB121.4 billion (US$3.4 billion, €3.1 billion, £2.5 billion), a 450 per cent jump from 2022.

Among its eight brands, Anantara, Avani, Oaks, Tivoli and NH Hotels are expected to be key drivers of growth –with Avani projected to reach 100 resorts.

Rajakarier says the long-term goal is to “drive wellness into all of Minor’s

brands”. “As a Thai-based company, wellness comes naturally to Minor and is ingrained in our DNA,” he says. “It’s not a fad; it’s something we’ve authentically nurtured. Guests today are willing to spend more on wellness because they’re not only looking to live longer but also to lead better lifestyles.”

Now, the company is exploring ways to help customers of any age fulfil this need, both at its properties and after they leave.

AvaniWell and Life by Anantara

Since 1999, Minor’s spas have been operated and conceptualised by its spa and wellness division, MSpa.

Up until recently, it managed four wellness brands. Anantara Spa and Avani Spa are both in-house concepts inspired by the company’s Thai heritage and it also has third-party partnerships with mediwellness companies Clinique La Prairie and Verita Healthcare Group.

The addition of AvaniWell and Life by Anantara takes MSpa’s in-house brands up to four – six if you also include the third-party partnerships.

Rajakarier emphasises that both the new launches are part of Minor’s plans to carve out its own distinctive wellness niche that’s accessible, fun and sociable.

He reveals: “We have plans to expand the Life by Anantara concept across other Anantara resorts worldwide but Thailand will serve as the initial testing ground.”

It’s testing the waters with AvaniWell, but he says Minor would be open to opportunities for expanding the concept in destinations where there’s market demand.

Balancing act

While Asia has always been the main market for Minor, the goal is to achieve a more balanced global distribution of brands in the future. Approximately half of

the 200 expected openings will still be in Asia, with India being a particular focus.

However, more than 50 properties will be revealed in both Europe and the Middle East while Australia, New Zealand, the Americas and Africa will also see new openings.

With a personal passion for wellbeing, Rajakarier is clear that wellness will be a priority as Minor continues to expand its international pipeline.

“Wellness used to be a nice-to-have and now it’s a must-have. Our home base in Thailand is famous for wellness and the care in which it’s delivered – it’s about transplanting that into other countries. We want to make wellness attractive to everyone and educate people about living healthier and longer lives. If in the process we can convert some of them to a better lifestyle, this will be a huge contribution to helping create a happier, healthier society.” ●

Gisburne Park will be a holistic sanctuary designed to nurture members and their guests from top-to-toe

Amber Hindley, co-owner of Gisburne Park Estate

Creating a haven

Plans have been unveiled to bring a £30m private wellness club to a 400-year-old private country estate in north west England

Plans have been announced to introduce the first five-star private wellness club in northern England, located on a historic 1,000-acre estate in the Ribble Valley, Yorkshire.

The proposed project, based in an area of outstanding natural beauty, 45 minutes north of Manchester, is being spearheaded by entrepreneurs and estate owners Amber and Guy Hindley.

The duo are on a personal venture to transform part of their privatelyowned 400-year-old Gisburne Park Estate into a holistic sanctuary.

Guy Hindley, the great-grandson of British Home Stores (BHS) founder Harold Hindley, grew up on the estate and inherited it in 2003 as a neglected hunting property – once frequented by prominent figures including Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II.

■ Alongside luxury wellness facilities, the club will be home to a riverfront gym, a 70-acre wildlife sanctuary and three miles of private river walks
GISBURNE PARK ESTATE

■ An artist's impression of the Gisburne Park Estate Wellness Club

A formal planning application for the plans is due to be submitted in early 2025

In the mid-1990s, the family sold the estate’s Grade I-listed Georgian mansion, which was later converted into a hospital.

However, during the pandemic, the Hindleys repurchased the property and have since spent approximately £15 million (US$19.5 million, €17.9 million) transforming part of the estate into a holiday village, complete with 84 lodges and 10 holiday cottages, a restaurant, a wedding venue, a seasonal glamping village and a range of event spaces.

Drawing inspiration from top private members clubs in London, New York and Los Angeles, the couple estimate realising the wellness club and hotel will require an additional £30 million (US$39 million, €36 million) investment.

The Hindleys plan to submit a formal planning application in early 2025.

The wellness club

“Gisburne Park will not be a traditional spa, but a holistic sanctuary designed to nurture members and their guests from top-to-toe,” Amber told Spa Business

The club will combine fitness, spa, wellness and biohacking amenities with nature therapy, nutritious food and community events.

It will o er spa treatments, luxury wellness facilities, a riverfront gym, a 70-acre wildlife sanctuary and three miles of private river walks.

Plans also include a six-treatmentroom spa, indoor and outdoor pools, wild swimming facilities, a spa garden, a Himalayan salt steamroom and IR saunas.

Beyond the gym, fitness facilities will include pickleball, paddle and tennis courts, alongside a schedule of movement and mindfulness classes and a sports rehab centre.

In addition to holistic treatments, members will have access to a suite of modern wellness technology including red light therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy and more.

“There’s nothing like this in the north,” said Amber, who says the concept has already attracted the attention of highprofile members and organisations. A number of local Premier League football clubs – including Manchester City – have indicated their interest to use the club for training camps and recovery.

Guy anticipates that construction will begin next year – pending a successful planning application process – with completion expected in 18 months.

“Our vision is to create a private sanctuary where members can come every day to feel good and improve their sense of wellbeing and fitness.” ●

BC SoftWear’s new spa slipper is fully biodegradable while maintaining a luxury feel, says Barbara Cooke

Providing guest slippers is a spa amenities staple, but it’s not always easy to ensure they’re sustainable – an issue which is increasingly demanding attention in the spa industry.

BC SoftWear has now given the spa slipper a sustainable makeover, with a new design featuring Npulp straw soles.

“We’ve never before seen such high demand from spas for a more sustainable option for their spa slipper,” says Barbara Cooke. BC SoftWear’s founder and CEO explains:

“BC SoftWear launched a completely biodegradable, coir-soled slipper three years ago – they’re made from all natural fibres, are completely plastic free and 100 per cent biodegradable. But we were aware they weren’t as luxurious as the five-star spa community required.”

In response, BC SoftWear went back to the drawing board and has now created a brand-new take on luxury sustainable spa footwear. In its new slipper, the coir sole has been replaced with a unique new sole – made from compressed straw – called Npulp.

THE NPULP REVOLUTION

Npulp is a straw-based paper, manufactured through a revolutionary new process that uses an enzyme to digest the straw and turn it into pulp. This eliminates the need for harsh chemicals, while also minimising water and energy consumption. The only ingredients are straw, water and the digestion enzyme.

The Npulp soles in BC SoftWear’s new slippers are both compostable and biodegradable. The sole is also anti-slip – more so than many other biodegradable slippers – as well as water resistant, which is a plus for spas with wet areas.

Npulp also has an OK Compost Certificate from the raw material

The new slippers are anti-slip and biodegradable

We’ve

never seen such high demand from spas for a more sustainable option

supplier which not only identifies the raw material as biodegradable, but also the NPulp manufacturing technique as non-chemical, low-energy and pollution free.

“While this feels like a standard sole, our new slippers make much less of an environmental impact,” says Cooke. “The soles offer considerably better anti-slip protection and are water resistant– a vital consideration for spas looking to provide their guests with footwear that’s suitable for wet areas. BC SoftWear was one of the first suppliers to bring out a biodegradable slipper several years ago, so it’s no surprise we continue to evolve to even better, more environmentally-friendly materials.” ● More: www.bcsoftwear.com
