Soak Bathhouse to unveil Sydney bathing oasis in 2025

The global momentum behind communal bathing and social wellness shows no signs of slowing down as urban Australian bathhouse brand Soak Bathhouse announces plans for its fifth location, opening in Alexandria, Sydney, in April 2025.

Soak was co-founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife duo Alexis and Niki Dean to create a portfolio of urban oases to make wellness easy, accessible and affordable.

The couple launched their flagship location in November 2020 on the Gold Coast in Queensland, which was later joined by a rooftop day spa in Brisbane’s West End in 2022.

NEW OPENINGS

The announcement of Soak Alexandria marks the third property in the business’ construction pipeline, joining facilities under development in South Yarra, Melbourne and a flagship Sydney outpost in Bondi Junction. Both are due to launch by the end of 2024.

Located only 4km from Sydney’s central business district, Soak Alexandria will cover 700sq m and become part of the Bourke & Bowden mixed-use development, a AUS$230 million (US$154.4 million, €142.3 million, £118.3 million) project helmed by architect John Wardle.

Exercise in 40s and 60s counters ageing

Stanford Medicine’s research reveals that aging is non-linear, with notable changes occurring around ages 44 and 60.

This study, published in Nature Aging, tracked 108 adults (aged 25-75) over nearly two years, analysing biological samples to identify shifts in molecular profiles.

Results showed age-related disease risks rise significantly after 60, and that only 6.6 per cent of molecules change linearly with age. In the mid-40s and early 60s, shifts in metabolism, skin ageing,

Accor, which has 5,200 hotels globally, is shifting from being a room-based organisation – built for sleeping – to being built for living, said SVP of wellbeing, Emlyn Brown, at the inaugural HCM Summit, hosted last week.

“My role is to bring wellbeing out of the spa and fitness areas and into the rooms, design and nutrition. Wellness for us is the aspiration creator which puts heads on beds,” Brown said, during a live on-stage interview.

“Our luxury market is changing considerably; previously it was pitched towards Baby Boomers, but now we’re starting to look at younger demographics. There is also a growth segment of people going to luxury hotels and demanding three-day programmes, for example around detoxing.”

One of the things Brown is addressing is improving the fitness experience in hotels beyond lining cardio machines up in front of a window.

Mediterranean longevity principles are the driving force behind ZEM Wellness Clinic – a new Spanish health retreat debuting in January

■ ZEM will o er guests six wellness retreat programmes

ZEM Wellness Clinic Altea is the name of a brand new health and longevity retreat coming to Alicante, Spain, on 7 January 2025.

The concept is backed by a philosophy rooted in the principles of Mediterranean longevity and will consist of a 95-key luxury hotel, a medical-wellness clinic, a 4,000sq m spa, a fitness space and farm-to-table culinary concepts.

Nestled in a sea view location surrounded by centuries-old vegetation, the retreat is poised to become a premium health destination dedicated to longevity, holistic wellbeing and high-end medical wellness.

Meanwhile, a salon and barbershop will provide nail and hair services.

ZEMness has opted to work with two Italy-based spa and wellness equipment suppliers, Lemi Group and Nilo, to kit

The spa will be complemented by ZEM's fitness centre o ering TRX, functional and cardio training, a Pilates studio, sports rehabilitation, personal training and post-surgical recovery. Yoga and mindfulness classes will round out the o erings.

Medical wellness

ZEM's medical-wellness clinic will o er more than 400 treatments, powered by advanced medical technology and led by specialists from diverse fields including cardiology, dermoesthetics, nutrition, dentistry, regenerative medicine, pain management and more.

The clinic will operate with an integrative health approach combining personalised medical programmes and preventative medicine with tailored treatments.

Guests will be able to choose between six wellness retreats, divided into two categories: Longevity – promoting a longer, healthier life, and Balance & Vitality – focused on weight control, detoxification and stress management.

In line with the Mediterranean longevity philosophy, nutrition will be a cornerstone of ZEM's wellness approach.

Guests will enjoy customised meal plans rooted in the Mediterranean diet, using fresh ingredients from the destination's organic farm.

A new anti-senescence serum from Biologique Recherche offers transformative results and raises the bar in anti-ageing skincare when combined with its iconic collagen formula

After nearly 50 years, Biologique Recherche has solidified its reputation for premium, high-performance skincare with its unique, clinical approach that consistently delivers both immediate and enduring results.

The latest innovation from the leading French skincare authority – Sérum Progeskin – represents the forefront of skin biology expertise, addressing one of the primary causes of skin ageing: cellular senescence.

INNOVATIVE DEFENSE

Derived from the Latin “senescene” meaning ‘to grow old’, cellular senescence is a state where cells cease to divide but remain metabolically active. This process accelerates with natural ageing.

Typically, cellular senescence occurs in response to damage, allowing tissue regeneration and the removal of dead cells. However, in ageing, damage often surpasses the repair capacity, leading to an accumulation of senescent cells.

These cells contribute to a pro-inflammatory environment that fosters age-related diseases and visible signs of ageing, such as thinning skin, flattened dermal-epidermal junctions, wrinkles, reduced elasticity and pigmentation issues.

The R&D teams at Biologique Recherche have focused on two key proteins involved in this process, firstly, Progerin, a protein that accumulates with age, disrupting cell regeneration, extracellular matrix integrity and inflammatory responses. This leads to thinning skin, wrinkles and loss of subcutaneous fat, resulting in a gaunt

the purest form of collagen, representing the original protein in its raw state.

Sérum Progeskin’s formula targets these proteins to combat ageing. Designed to be used around the face, neck and décolleté, it leaves the skin firmer, plumper and more toned, visibly reducing wrinkles and fine lines for a rejuvenated appearance.

Sérum Progeskin features a cutting-edge blend of two active ingredients: Progescence, which decreases progerin synthesis, reducing senescent cell accumulation over time and Pro-KL which activates klotho protein, supporting cellular metabolism and promoting skin cell longevity.

POTENT PARTNERS

For enhanced anti-ageing results, Biologique Recherche has paired Sérum Progeskin with its renowned Sérum Collagène Originel. This powerful combination addresses established wrinkles and preserves youthful skin.

Launched in 2022, Sérum Collagène Originel targets four primary types of collagen using Type 0 Collagen, silene extract, green microalgae, and soy glycopeptides. Type 0 Collagen, derived from marine jellyfish, is

Working with a marine biotech specialist, Biologique Recherche’s R&D team extracted this ancient collagen to re-densify skin, making it tighter, smoother and plumper, while significantly reducing wrinkle length.

Sérum Collagène Originel specifically addresses established wrinkles, while Sérum Progeskin targets cutaneous ageing. Together, they provide a potent anti-ageing skincare solution.

Dr Philippe Allouche, co-chair and head of creation and R&D at Biologique Recherche, comments: “Sérum Progeskin and Sérum Collagène Originel work in synergy to preserve the skin’s natural youthfulness, delivering a firm and radiant complexion.”

Clodagh creates biophilic designs for Oakworks

Renowned spa designer Clodagh has brought a touch of ‘rustic bling’ to Oakworks wellness equipment range by creating a furniture collection featuring biophilic patterns.

Clodagh is known for her love of nature, feng shui and wabi-sabi and has channelled these approaches with two new intricate finishes.

Graphic and pointillist, the Canopy motive features abstract patterns inspired by the shadow and light effects at play in treetops. Meanwhile, Leaves & Shade is reminiscent of autumn leaves on the forest floor.

Both can be engraved onto the Clodagh Lounger, Prema table or Trolley by Oakworks in either a walnut or grey wood design.

The Lounger, with a plush top, offers a zerogravity-esque curve and tilt and takes its lead from NASA design principles. Prema is an ergonomic massage table and the Trolley offers customisable storage with optional extras such as expandable work surfaces and towel warmers.

Clodagh and her team explained that both patterns are intended to transform the furniture into “a stunning work of art … and to enhance the calming, relaxing environment offered in the best spa experiences”.

BC SoftWear considers sustainability in everything it does, from product

ranges to its factory and packaging

BC SoftWear’s spa linens, towels and robes are well known for being a sustainable option for spas.

The SupremeSoft range o ers up to 70 per cent less energy use and 10 per cent less water consumption during laundering, as well as a 31 per cent quicker drying time. All vital considerations for spas that launder in house.

“The standout sustainable advantage comes from the reduced cotton content,” says founder and CEO, Barbara Cooke. “While cotton o ers ultimate luxury, it absorbs a significant amount of water during laundering, which extends drying times. By minimising its use, our products dry quickly and help spas improve energy e ciency.”

British-based and family run, BC SoftWear considers sustainability in everything it does, from its products and factories to plastic-free packaging. Sustainability starts at source, with locally-grown cotton used wherever possible to reduce products’ carbon footprint. In addition, a raft of new sustainability initiatives have

been introduced at BC SoftWear’s principle factory in Turkey.

The factory has already installed solar power plants in surrounding fields and on the factory roofs, meaning it now uses its own clean energy to produce textiles. This prevents 30,000 tons of CO2 emission and 2.9m3 of natural gas consumption yearly. The factory also has its own biological treatment plant, which can treat 3,500 tonnes of wastewater a day saving three tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. Traditionally, water used to cool dyeing machines was wasted, but this heated water is now collected in a large indoor pool and the energy used to create steam, saving 220 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

Cooke adds: “Every spa customer we speak with is striving to meet their sustainability targets. We too are aware of our responsibility towards the environment, so have worked alongside our Turkish factory to ensure every opportunity to reduce environmental damage is taken. There is no Planet B, and every small change we make now will have lasting positive impacts in the future.” ● More: www.bcsoftwear.com

BC SoftWear’s UK-based sustainability initiatives

■ Paper wraps and corn starch used in all packaging, saving almost 100 tonnes of single-use plastic each year.

■ Solar panels will be installed on the roof of BC SoftWear’s 20,000sq ft facility in Maidenhead, with an estimated saving of 6,000kg of CO2, which is the equivalent of a 22,000mile car journey each year.

■ Plastic shrink wrapping replaced with reusable rubber bands, saving 600kgs of plastic a year.

■ Spa flip flop recycling initiative created for clients which recycles the flip flops to be used for children’s playgrounds.

■ BC SoftWear’s distribution vehicles will all be electric in the very near future and the directors' own cars are already electric.

■ More and more sustainable footwear options are being developed all the time.
