The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) has unveiled its 2025 Future of Wellness Trends report, outlining 10 trends that will shape the US$6.3 trillion global wellness industry in the coming year.
Launched this week at a media event in New York City, the publication delves into a diverse range of predictions, from the revival of analogue wellness practices and a global sauna renaissance to the industry's innovative approaches to tackling water scarcity and the Middle East's rapid emergence as a global wellness hub.
Each trend is brought to life through contributions from journalists, analysts and wellness specialists.
Beth McGroarty, GWS VP of research and forecasting,
commented: “In last year’s report, we noted that the wellness market was fast becoming a place of contradictory mindsets. A dramatically more high-tech, medical, hyper-optimising and expensive market was emerging (known as 'hardcare’). At the same time, we saw
■ The report's 'sauna reimagined' trend highlights a renaissance in
a sharpening desire for much simpler, low-tech, less relentlessly selfoptimising and affordable wellness, where social and emotional wellbeing matter most (‘softcare’). We said these polarities would only widen, and you see it in our 2025 report.”

HISTORY
Archaeologists discover ancient Roman spa among Pompeii’s ruins
An excavation of the lost ancient city of Pompeii in Naples, Italy, has unearthed a well-preserved private thermal spa dating back almost 2,000 years.
Pompeii, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, was once a thriving Roman city before it was engulfed by volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted on 24 August AD 79. The site is now an archaeological park and has been gradually dug up since the 16th century.
The recently discovered private spa is large enough to accommodate 30 guests and was found during the excavation of a home believed

to belong to a wealthy member of Pompeii’s elite. The spa includes a caldarium, a tepidarium, a frigidarium and an apodyterium.
Bathing and communal gatherings were essential aspects of ancient Roman culture and society, contributing not only to health but also to social status.
Archaeologists noted that the baths are located next to the home’s expansive banqueting area. This design allowed hosts to impress their guests by inviting them to relax in the baths before attending a meal, showcasing their wealth. MORE >>> http://lei.sr/f2b6k_B

Country revival
Plans have been approved for the multi-million-pound transformation of a historic English country estate into a boutique hotel and spa
The project will provide lasting benefits to the wider community, and we’re excited to see it move forward
Planning permission has been granted for Rayners Penn, a multi-million-pound project set to convert a historic English country property and former school in Buckinghamshire into a luxury hotel and spa destination. The initiative will involve the careful restoration of Rayners Estate, a 19th-century property set in the scenic village of Penn. Originally built for sir Philip Rose – solicitor to former UK prime minister Benjamin Disraeli – the Victorian estate fell into disrepair after the closure of the village school in 2015. Since 2021, the property has been privately owned by a local family, who is now moving forward with the project to breathe new life into the estate while preserving its historical integrity. Plans include the conversion and extension of the destination's Grade II-listed manor house, as well as the construction of new facilities. Once complete, Rayners Penn will be home to a 33-key hotel, a luxury spa, two restaurants and a cookery school.
Proposals for the spa include a mix of single and double treatment rooms, a co-ed thermal suite, relaxation areas, spa suites, a mindfulness studio and an orangery. Additional facilities will include changing rooms, VIP treatment rooms, a juice bar and a nail salon.

Our vision is to create a world-class retreat that reflects the estate’s historic grandeur
Spa guests will also have access to an outdoor area o ering garden-fronted treatment suites, bathing pools and a relaxation terrace with views of the estate’s wildflower meadows.
Before its decline, Rayners Estate was renowned for its lush gardens, home to a diverse array of flowers, trees and plants. As part of the redevelopment, these gardens will be carefully revived and enhanced, alongside the restoration of a historic boating lake. The restored grounds are set to serve as a tranquil backdrop for the spa, immersing guests in the estate’s natural beauty.
Project timeline
Construction on Rayners Penn is expected to begin in 2025, with the project taking approximately two and a half years to complete.
Conservation architects and design teams are still to be appointed.
Duncan Ball, CEO of Rayners Penn, said: “Our vision is to create a world-class retreat that reflects the estate’s historic grandeur while embedding sustainability in every aspect of its design.
“The project will provide lasting benefits to the wider community, and we’re excited to see it move forward.”
Sarah Moorhouse, associate director at planning and development consultancy Lichfields, said: “This project has been a great example of how heritage conservation and sustainable development can work hand in hand.
“Rayners Penn will bring substantial benefits to the area while preserving the estate’s rich history.”
Developers say the scheme will “embrace deep green credentials to future-proof against climate change and increase biodiversity on site”. Net zero carbon has been outlined as a key aspiration. ●

“The inspiration for this spa stems from the unique natural beauty of the desert – where a rare river flows from the mountain to the sea, right through the property,” said Lynn Curry, founder of Curry Spa Consulting.
“This serene waterway became the perfect centrepiece for the spa, with all its features thoughtfully arranged on either side to embrace and enhance the flow of nature’s energy.”

To honour its setting, Tierra Mar Spa features nature-inspired interiors intended to epitomise understated luxury and rustic coastal charm. Key design elements include locally sourced Ojinaga limestone floors, reclaimed wood accents, vaulted ceilings, cobblestone pathways and woven textiles.
Wellness programming
Tierra Mar Spa o ers an extensive treatment menu ranging from facials, body treatments and massages to

All journeys begin with a sound healing ritual, using soothing soundscapes to harmonise the mind and body and create a deep sense of tranquillity.
One highlight is the use of a rebozo, a traditional Mexican shawl, in some massages, which is claimed to enhance relaxation and provide therapeutic benefits through gentle, rhythmic movements.
Guests can also opt for a variety of fitness classes and wellness rituals.
The spa is partnered with global product houses Bustamante, 111Skin and Apotheca Beauty, as well as Dazzle Dry polish, Davines haircare and cosmetics products from Guadalajarabased Xixanthe, which are o ered at the full-service salon and nail bar. ●

Metawell is bridging the gap between cutting-edge science and timeless relaxation
For more than three decades, spas have focused on relaxation and treatments delivered by therapists. Now, however, we’re in the age of evidence-based wellness, where technology is blending with all things digital and this will have an inevitable impact on the traditional spa environment. This is more than just a trend. It’s a major shift and our industry is ripe for disruption.
Gharieni is leading the charge in this arena with Metawell – a collection of mind/body wellness technology beds, loungers and equipment. The products incorporate innovations such as haptic and augmented technologies, far infrared light, binaural vibro-acoustics, intermittent vacuum therapy and more. As a ‘gold standard’ brand, Gharieni is also delivering real value and quality. But how can spas tap into all of this to differentiate themselves?
BEST of both
BEST of both
Alina Hernandez, Gharieni Group advisory board member, explains how Metawell – its portfolio of tech-forward mind/body technologies – is right on time for the next era of wellness
BOTTOM-LINE IMPACT
The mix of advanced technology and mind/body experiences is so new that understanding intended uses and benefits – and how it fits within traditional spas – is a challenge that both operators and consumers face.
For one thing, Metawell products can be used to provide evidence-based solutions as well as to amplify hands-on services in exciting new ways.
They can also be useful tools in navigating operational issues such as staff shortages, absenteeism and presenteeism.
Think about the accelerated benefits of red light or vibro-acoustics and the fact that they can be delivered in protocols lasting 30 minutes or less with minimal staff intervention. Or think about stacking therapist-led services with technologies in the same time slot and charging a premium. We can then see the vast impact this can have on the bottom-line.

Sammy Gharieni, founder and CEO of Gharieni Group, says: “Thanks to Metawell, guests get exponential value for their wellness spend, business owners get higher yields for equipment spend and the industry gets supercharged with continued innovation and evolution.”
NEW HYBRID GUEST JOURNEYS
All of this means adopting a new way of thinking in how we design spa services, using mind/body technologies to seamlessly create a journey that is meaningful, engaging and provides high-value spend.
In imagining these new experiences, consider:
✔ What’s the total effect I want to achieve with the journey?
✔ What pain points or problems am I helping the consumer alleviate?
✔ What’s the USP/concept and how will it integrate with my selection of technologies?
✔ How can I be efficient while combining the best of what service providers offer (human touch) with technologies?
✔ Can I cross-pollinate from other industries to get ideas for unique features or innovative approaches?
Operators will be able to “re-imagine the spa experience while creating more relevance, inspiration and delight,” adds Gharieni, “while simultaneously offering megawatt benefits and creating lasting memories for consumers that will have them coming back for more”.
As the spa industry takes a huge leap forward, how we execute mind/body wellness technology experiences will make all the difference to business models and points of differentiation. It will propel businesses into the next iteration of spa and wellness and Gharieni will be there every step of the way. l More: www.metawell.io and gharienigroup.com
