WELCOME From the head of school Dear Friends, I feel so fortunate to be the head of this dynamic school located in New York’s Financial District, the fastest growing residential neighborhood in the city. At Léman Manhattan, our mission is to educate children not just to excel in academics, but to build a global perspective on the world that enables them to become adults who embrace life with zest, empathy and enthusiasm. First and foremost, our objective is to provide the highest-caliber educational experience in ways that build students’ character, confidence, critical thinking skills and personal talents. We accomplish this through small class sizes and personalized instruction designed to address each student’s unique learning style, goals, interests and strengths. Our open and constant communication between parents, teachers, students, and administrators is a unique component of our approach that builds strong partnerships to help students succeed. Our students are encouraged to appreciate and participate in studio and performing arts and a wide variety of athletics, and to build their social skills through community service and collaboration across our sister schools in the Meritas family, which brings together over 50 years of international learning expertise. Our High School program, which graduated its second senior class in June 2014, provides the structure and depth necessary to ensure that our students succeed at their top-choice colleges or universities. What excites me most about Léman Manhattan is our unique ability to combine new and old traditions. We couple the advantages of what’s tried and true from our namesake sister school Collège du Léman, one of the world’s premier international boarding schools, with the energy, excitement and fresh, contemporary thinking of an innovative school unencumbered by the dictates of convention. I personally look forward to welcoming you to the Léman Manhattan community. Sincerely,
Drew Alexander

Meritas Teachers College
Every Léman Manhattan teacher is part of an international community of educators serving more than 11,000 students each day across the Meritas network of schools. Our teachers regularly collaborate with their peers to share best practices and strategies to enhance student performance. Léman teachers are committed to continuously honing their craft, and leverage training, metrics, and data to deliver exceptional results to our students.
“We are so fortunate to have a group of knowledgeable, caring, and energetic teachers who really prepare our students with the academic foundation and fluency they will need at all levels – throughout their time at Léman and beyond.” – Emily Khan, English Department Chair
ACADEMICS Personalized learning Providing a bespoke experience to every child At the heart of the Léman experience is an outcomes-based personalized approach to instruction that educates the whole child and fosters academic and personal growth. By teaching to standards in a structured but student-centered environment, we empower children to carve their own paths and assume accountability for results. Starting in kindergarten, each Léman student, in partnership with teacher and parents, develops an individual Personal Learning Plan (PLP) at the beginning of the school year. Informed by prior year academic performance, test scores, teacher and parent feedback, and student goals, the PLP charts the course for the student across three key areas: academic goals, enrichment goals, and habits and attitudes of learning. Through small group and one-on-one instruction geared towards students’ interests, academic needs and learning styles, children build confidence and resiliency as they set and achieve goals. Using the most sophisticated methods of monitoring and measuring student progress, we constantly assess learning achievement in our classrooms. Each student’s growth is tracked and measured throughout the year, and is assessed and evolved via regular parent-teacher conferences.
Personal Learning Plan Pillars Individual Goal Setting Academic and Enrichment Progress Measurable Outcomes Confidence and Accountability ”Our goal is to ignite the full academic potential of every student. Our dedicated faculty and staff promote intellectual, emotional and social growth, while emphasizing problem solving, critical thinking and higher-order reasoning through our curriculum.” – Jerry Maraia, Director of Curriculum
ACADEMICS touchpoints Building global perspective through student collaboration Our signature Touchpoints program brings our global philosophy to life in a unique curriculum for students in grades 2 though 8. Touchpoints is a year-long program that fosters collaboration between Léman Manhattan students and children from other Meritas schools to understand, debate, and propose solutions to complex problems facing societies around the world. Léman Manhattan students are paired with a peer classroom at a sister school, and charged with working together on major global issues such as deforestation, world hunger, clean water, and poverty. Under teacher guidance and with ongoing parent engagement, students research a specific issue and share questions, findings, solutions and ideas using cutting-edge technologies. The highlight of the program is an end-of-year video conference LincolnDouglas style debate between the paired classes on a proposed resolution to the assigned problem. Touchpoints helps students build a sense of shared mission and gain an increasingly global perspective on the world.
Touchpoints Pillars Global Perspectives Cultural Awareness Understanding of World Issues Research and Public Speaking Skills “We want our children not only to understand the nature of the problem in its manifold complexities – but also recognize they can personally address the issue and make a difference. Touchpoints helps students develop a deeper understanding of how global issues affect varying regions of the world and how to work collaboratively with others to positively impact change.” – Drew Alexander, Head of School
ACADEMICS Lower School
Early Childhood to 5th grade
Encouraging curiosity in the youngest learners Our Lower School is a vibrant, joyful place. Curriculum is focused on educating the whole child and developing strong critical thinking skills. We offer a diverse program that encourages students to reach their academic, social and emotional potential in a challenging yet nurturing environment that embraces family, community and citizenship. Through our many offerings, children find their passions and develop their interests and strengths. As a result, our students become independent thinkers and competent decision makers who are excited to learn. In addition to emphasizing proficiency in reading, writing and math, our Lower School program focuses on world language, the humanities, science and physical education. Theatre, music and visual arts help to encourage creativity, open-ended thinking and cooperation. We also know children learn best when they are given hands-on activities, which can take many forms. For an art lesson, PreK students turn their classroom into an art gallery and write invitations to parents and friends. To learn about supply and demand, first graders sell recycled items they’ve made for Earth Day. Our youngest students are often the source of the biggest ideas at Léman. Our goal is to ignite learners’ minds in limitless ways. With a small student-teacher ratio, our faculty get to know our children and parents very well. Parents are invited to be in touch with our teachers frequently. We have high expectations of our children’s work and behavior, and strongly believe in providing clear and ongoing feedback to students and families. Our teachers provide thoughtful attention to each child’s social and emotional health and development, and focus on building classroom communities in which children feel secure and safe to take risks, and in which all voices are heard and respected.

ACADEMICS MIDDLE School
6th to 8th grade
Fostering critical thought during their most formative years The Middle School program at Léman Manhattan offers academically enriching and demanding classes to bolster problem-solving combined with opportunities to travel to special academic and athletic events within our family of 10 independent schools. Critical thinking is extremely important to the Middle School curriculum. We help students lay the foundation for evaluating sources and information to make educated choices and acquire the building blocks they need to achieve success in future academics and in life. We teach life skills such as strong communication, leadership, time management, and preparation for testing environments, which become part of students’ “tool belts” for learning which they will utilize in high school and beyond. At Léman, each Middle School student is part of a small advisory group that provides a supportive forum for discussing topics including building strong character and developing personal goals. Co-curricular offerings such as athletic, theatrical, and other high-interest clubs are also an important part of our students’ lives as they discover new activities and interests. Partnership with parents is an essential part of a successful Middle School experience. Advisors meet with parents and students three times a year to review each child’s goals and progress. Conferences are led by the student with support from his or her advisor. Working together in the best interest of each student is vital to the success of each child.

The IB focuses on building knowledge, skills, and independent critical and creative thought to help students to make connections between areas of study. We also provide unparalleled college advisory services. With two dedicated college counselors on staff, the collective wisdom of our network of sister schools, and LÊman’s Advisory Board, our students benefit from a tremendous wealth of resources to help them achieve their desired outcome. athletics Building a balanced mind and body The goals of Léman Manhattan’s athletic program are to improve each student’s physical fitness, develop his or her motor skills, encourage good sportsmanship, and promote social and emotional development. We incorporate physical activity from an early age in our Lower School through structured and free-play physical education classes, swim instruction, and recess time on our rooftop playground. At the junior varsity and varsity level, student athletes are expected to commit themselves to the team and to continued self-improvement. High School athletics include increased emphasis on physical conditioning, fundamental skills, strategy and teamwork. In addition, our outstanding coaches emphasize the character benefits of participating in team sports. All coaches work with administrators, the school psychologist and teachers to ensure the educational welfare of our student athletes. Each of our campuses features a full-sized gym with a rock climbing wall and multi-lane swimming pool. Athletic offerings include baseball, basketball, cross-country, fencing, golf, soccer, swimming, track and volleyball. Léman Manhattan is a member of the Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (ACIS), whose member schools include Berkeley Carroll, Brooklyn Friends, Dwight, Friends Seminary, Packer, Saint Ann’s and Staten Island Academy.
“Our son Sam (class of 2013) was an All American Scholastic Athlete, and was selected to swim at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs. He was able to get all of his assignments during winter recess and return to school totally prepared because the whole faculty and administration were so supportive. One of his Olympic coaches commented: ‘This is a school that helps Sam academically but also respects him as a person.’” – Linda Sherman, Parent

Our small class sizes provide students with the ability to create their own path and seek out individual leadership roles in performing arts, student government, sports teams or clubs.
cuisine
Both school cafeterias are staffed with professional chefs who create nutritious and delicious organic food for children. Each day, a main dish and vegetarian option is offered, along with salad bar and sandwich station. In our Lower School, teachers eat lunch with their classes, and families may participate in an early bird program starting at 8am to take breakfast with their children before school. As a school committed to green living, Léman students compost food waste from our cafeterias daily, which is then used in an urban garden tended to by Lower School students.
community outreach
Community service is an integral part of a student’s life at Léman Manhattan. Through personal interactions and projects, students develop an understanding and sense of responsibility about their school community, the surrounding neighborhood and the entire world. Technology
school traditions
Technology is an essential part of a student’s life at Léman Manhattan and is integrated throughout the curriculum in order to further support our students’ path to digital responsibility and global citizenship in the 21st century. Students learn how to navigate and perform online research, create and critique online content, and edit and produce digital design pieces and multimedia presentations within all curricular areas. Technology-specific courses are offered in both divisions, including digital video production and graphic arts. We also offer a variety of after-school opportunities in both divisions for students to practice and explore other digital tools and design technologies.
Our location in the Financial District and international community serves as a rich foundation for the development of Léman traditions. We kick off and close the year with school-wide ceremonies to celebrate a new start and honor the year’s accomplishments; our students sing at the New York Stock Exchange annual holiday tree-lighting; our seniors cement the moment of graduation with photographs on the steps of Federal Hall and with the iconic Wall Street Bull.
“Léman Manhattan gives students lots of opportunities to participate in community-building activities. It is a great mix that cultivates a sense of belonging and camaraderie in students and parents. The school is truly a second home for us.” – Patty Olivares, Parent

Located in the beautiful village of Versoix, just outside of Geneva, Collège du Léman enrolls nearly 2,000 boarding and day students in a vibrant campus setting that brings together students with global perspectives to learn in a dynamic educational setting. Léman Manhattan and Collège du Léman, together with Léman International School in Chengdu, located in the Sichuan province in southwest China, operate as a unique consortium of schools within the Meritas network that provide students with a truly “Three Campus, One School” experience. Students at all three schools benefit from a number of unique learning opportunities:

This would recognize students who successfully complete an additional set of rigorous interdisciplinary requirements, including world language study, community leadership, and study abroad.
Student Exchanges All Léman students will have the option to spend anywhere from a few weeks to an entire academic year learning abroad at a sister school engaging in new cultural experiences and building relationships across the globe.
