HOANG LE MINH

Landscape Architect

About ME !

A Vietnamese young architect always finds new inspires in the surrounding of the life. Although his background is urban planning, he had worked in various architectural and design sectors as a “flexible” architect since 2015. Working in architecture or interior design industry, to understand the design process, may be more challenging indeed. However, he has flexibility, initiative, and creativity in his personalities; that keeps his works going on track. Furthermore, new exciting fields always attract young adventurer, which is why he could efficiently make it.

In June 2020, he finished a master’s program in Landscape Architecture in a beautiful and dynamic country, Estonia. In EMU, he had experienced various kinds of natural, artificial, and urban landscape projects as well as international workshops that consolidated my academic knowledge.

At the moment, he is looking for new opportunities for his career as a landscape architect. This guy is me!!!

HEIR OF ENLIGHTENMENT

BUFFALO, PLACE OF ACTION

Hoang Le Minh, Jelena Sabovljevic, Nargess Doosti

I remember in 2021 when my grandpa took me to ‘DEL’ corridor for the first time. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. The corridor was and it still is probably one of the only places where we could explore the charm of diverse people and nature. It was always out-of-theordinary holiday when we went there on weekends. Overwhelmed by the smell of plants, brightness colors and dreamy light, it seemed like the park path will never end, showing its beauty on every corner. Grandpa always used to say: “You kids are living in a different world. You live in this fast world of technology. We didn’t have so much opportunities, find a way to use them.” I was lucky. When I wanted a little of both worlds, I could always turn to grandpa. He worked in a grain factory for fifty years. This came to an end because the factory closed, and made him search for a new job for years when Buffalo was not a booming city. Last year when we were looking at the grain elevators from the corridor, he pointed at them and proudly said: “Kid, we have lived our lives there. Our identity should be there for good!” Things are different now. Every generation should have something it will be proud of. It is mesmerizing how the corridor was our place of comfort. How it was our second home and how it made us start acting differently after thinking of our hopes and dreams. We learned about ourselves, how to explore and cherish diversity. Finally, we learned how to stop and think about the world around us. Stop, observe and connect with it.

ROAD ANALYSE

Biking and walking trail// The residential area is kept safe and sound by creation of the buffer zone. The dense row of native vegetation allows people to use corridor freely and keeps privacy and security of the existing homes on a high level.

PERSPECTIVE

The beach// The beach was recognized as one of the main treasures of the corridor. By opening the space and adding new access points, people are able to enter from the land as well as from the water. This multi-use zone can be a place for gathering, group sports, fishing, chess, and many more activities.

PERSPECTIVE

Entrance and bike rental station // The idea is to make bike station digitalized, and accessible at any time of day and night.

THE ‘FREE-IN-THEMOUNTAINS’PRISON

120 HOUR

It is 2119, people are seeking forthe meaningsoflife, asthey are fed up with the technology and digitalised world. Refugees particularly, are seeking forthe meaning of home on a planet where their voices are not heard by the world and its inhabitants. Climate has been surprisingly colder than the last century, and the biodiversity has changed exotically that you polarbears are no longer white.

The free-in-the-mountains prison is for the refugees ,who do not have a certain idea of what home is, and in the end, for any kind of human! They are allliving in their own prisons, which they are trying to warm it up by their inner suns. By bringing the person into the “free-in-the-mountain prisons” in the heart of Svalbard, he’l fit his life into a prison with eternal freedom, where he will incorporate with educating new refugees towards as highest level as he can.

MASTER PLAN

Target is an exiled refugee, who had been rejected from his home (surrounded by mountain somewhere in the Middle East) by his government, and laterexiled again while he was filled with the hope of a new home, into the Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, where he was detained illegally since 2013, and he wrote the book ‘no friend but the mountains’ during his detention.

The concept of the playground is inspired from the history of the place, the main theme of the playground is to simulate the medieval times but in modern way with the kids.

There is four main parts of the playground:

The Maze:-

This is the main part which is a maze for the kids to play and interact with the history of the castle by exploring their own ways and learn the about the history of the place in an interesting way and how was it the past to by showing different signs along the ways and models in different scales showing the timeline of the castle.

The Amphitheatre:-

This part is for the same purpose but in different approach. It’s simply for concerts or shows related to the castle by manifesting the medieval times and exhibits emphasizing on the main theme. Could be also not related to the theme by events for entertaining.

Medieval Area:-

This part is regular playground for kids, including an interesting games and mysterious places to explore, inspired from the medieval times.

Every significant feature that we analyzed having dual characteristics. The Cemetery Park has a lot of green spaces relevant for developing a proper green infrastructure for Tallinn, from Kopli Park to common gardens. Managing this green infrastructure must be done consciously because bad decisions in this way will cause climate change problems. Another potential of the area is the valuable heritage and landscape, aspects that are particular for this part of the Estonian coast. However, there is a risk of losing this natural park and suburb background because intruders like the power plant. Furthermore, the economic side of this area is influenced by fishing as an activity of the local people. For the tourists, there are not so many possibilities, because Cemetery Park is not developed in this field, with hotels or attractions. This way, the tourists are unintentionally kept away. The abrupt ending of the tourist area is also a risk of losing the character of the landscape, because of the blending of residential and industrial areas. The opening to the coast is a real potential, the beach being a socially and economically attractive area. However, the existing accesses cannot meet the need of future tourism development, because it will be too crowded. In the future, there will be made changes in this way.

DESIGN STEP

The design gives solutions for solving existing social issues and fitting the citizen’s needs. Besides, it is a possible experiment to look at Vietnamese reaction with this initiative.

The project aims to let people and authorities together create their places, activities, and identity is divided into three phases.

Designed table and chairs
DESIGN CONCEPT

PLAN scale: 1/500

In this first phase, the design focuses on creating a low-cost design and moveable types of furniture with some simple design and low impact on the site. With moveable furniture, people can flexibly adjust them when it is necessary. This temporary design experiment duration is one year.

The wall is considered to do painting with white color to make sense of widening.

Some plant boxes are added as an initiative for food growing. People can do garden practices with some essential vegetables for example lettuces, mushroom, carrot, or tomatoes, or some daily-use herbs such as mint, perilla leaf, green onions, rice paddy leaf, Centella.

A few simple design benches, shipping pallet chairs, and tables, common bins for gathering, relaxing, having meals and cleaning stuff also are attached.

On the surface of the alley, some temporary kid games are setting by chalks or spray paints.

The place with small design can stimulate people to do some outdoor activities, especially children, who can use the area as a playground and play many traditional games.

1 LOW COST
PHASE
DESIGN STEP

PHASE 2 LOW-MODERATE COST

PLAN scale: 1/500

After one year of the first phase, in the next stage, the design still keeps all the design of the first step and attach more furniture. This temporary design experiment duration is two years.

The wall is considered to grow some native vine that can make the alley more greenery.

More first phase shipping pallet chairs, and tables for gathering, relaxing, and having meals also are attached and the temporary benches are replaced by new bench design

More food containers are also added.

On the surface of the alley, some temporary kid games are setting by spray paints with many colors.

DESIGN STEP

PLAN scale: 1/500

In the last phase, the design will be conducted more permanently and stable. This project will start in the fourth year, and the temporary design experiment duration is 5 years.

The wall is considered to have some traditional painting in small sizes and some colorful graphic textures and pattern paintings.

All moveable items of furniture would change into a regular design feature with stable materials such as stainless steel or concrete. These materials can be more adaptable in Ho Chi Minh city climate conditions.

The transformation of food containers from wood to concrete or clay as a design program will be conducted in this phase.

On the surface of the alley, some permanent kid games are setting by spray paints with many colors. Besides, there are some graphic artworks also making on the surface. The most essential thing on the surface is green beds for water treatment, also including.

The canopy will be remade to suit the concept design with similar colors, textures, and patterns on the wall.

The power poles, water pipes are re-painted with colorful colors.
