H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum

President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority Chairman of Dubai Airports Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group

Aviation Industry | Who's Who

O

ver the past 35 years, HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum has been at the forefront of Dubai’s remarkable economic development spearheading the successful expansion of aviation, which constitutes a substantial part of Dubai’s GDP, and formulating economic, investment and fiscal policies and strategies in support of the emirate’s overarching vision. Sheikh Ahmed embarked on his career in the aviation industry in 1985 when he was appointed President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) – the governing body that oversaw the activities of Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai Duty Free, among others. In the same year Emirates airline – Dubai’s international carrier was launched with Sheikh Ahmed as its Chairman. He is now the Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, which includes dnata – one of the world’s leading providers of air services and travel services, and other aviation related entities. Emirates is an award-winning international airline, and one of the world’s most recognised airline brands with a global footprint across six continents, connecting passengers and facilitating global trade. The airline operates one of the most modern and efficient aircraft eet comprised of spacious and comfortable Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Under his leadership, Emirates has been pro table for over 30 years. A trusted partner for over 300 airline customers worldwide, dnata offers ground handling, cargo and catering services at 126 airports in 19 countries and operates over 200 travel outlets around the world. In the nancial year 2019-20, dnata handled 681,000 aircraft, moved 2.9 million tons of cargo, uplifted more than 93 million meals and handled over 3.5 million travel bookings. Dubai Duty Free has become one of the biggest single airport retail operations in the world with US$2.543 billion in annual sales in 2020. Under Sheikh Ahmed’s leadership, the DCA underwent an organisational restructuring in April 2007 resulting in the creation of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) as the local regulatory body, and Dubai Airports as the owner and operator of Dubai’s airports – DXB and Dubai World Central (DWC). Following the restructuring, Sheikh Ahmed became the President of DCAA and Chairman of Dubai Airports. The fact that Dubai is now rmly established as the region’s leading tourist destination and business, trade and transport hub is due in no small measure to the efforts of Sheikh Ahmed. Under his leadership, DXB has developed into the world’s

busiest airport for international passengers and among the largest cargo hubs with a network of 220 destinations served by more than 75 airlines. This was enabled by the timely and progressive expansion of the hub which included the spectacular opening of DXB’s Terminal 3 on October 14, 2008; the opening of Concourse A, the world’s rst purpose-built A380 facility in early 2013, as part of a $7.8 billion expansion plan designed to boost DXB’s capacity to 90 million passengers; followed by the awless opening of the $1.2 billion Concourse D in February 2016. Earlier in 2008, in another rst to Dubai’s long list, ydubai was launched. With Sheikh Ahmed to lead the airline as its Chairman and now in its 11th year of operation, ydubai has created a network of more than 70 destinations in 45 countries served by a eet of more than 50 Boeing 737 aircraft. In June 2016, Sheikh Ahmed was appointed as President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences. In January 2019, Sheikh Ahmed was awarded the Honorary Sash of Mohammed Bin Rashid by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, for winning the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Government Excellence Award for his leadership in aviation. In November 2019, Sheikh Ahmed was appointed to temporarily oversee Dubai Holding and Meraas., and in June 2020 Meraas merged under the umbrella of Dubai Holding with Sheikh Ahmed con rmed as its Chairman. In January 2020, Dubai Council was formed, and Sheikh Ahmed was appointed as the Commissioner General of “Dubai economy” pillar to oversee the Department of Economic Development, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and Dubai’s free zones, airports, ports and customs. Sheikh Ahmed holds several government positions and plays an increasingly pivotal role in leading the emirate’s nance and energy sectors. Despite his numerous business activities, he is Patron to many charitable organisations. He has also received numerous accolades from various Governments and multi-nationals organisations. Sheikh Ahmed has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Denver, Colorado, USA. He is well known internationally for his contribution to the development of aviation in the region. The Royal Aeronautical Society, one of the industry’s oldest and most respected professional associations honoured his achievements in aviation with a fellowship of the Society at the 1994 Farnborough Air Show in the UK. In May 2013, he was presented with an honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from City University London – Cass Business School in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the development of professional sectors including aviation, nance, banking and entrepreneurship among others in the UAE. Global Aviation Industry | Features

F

rom the 4.5 billion passengers who traveled in 2019 to just a few millions in 2020, the global aviation industry was probably the hardest hit industry by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Held in high-esteem for its many perks, including high salaries and free travel across the world, the industry found itself reeling from the impact of the pandemic, forcing it to layoff tens of thousands of staff all at once amid a global travel ban in 2020 prevent the spread of the virus. A signi cant portion of the 11.3 million jobs in the aviation industry prior to the pandemic were wiped out. And so was the $3.5 trillion GDP associated with travel and tourism. Airlines continue to incur losses in the billions with commercial planes grounded for the most part of 2020 and 2021 even with the emergence of the COVID-19 vaccines amid health and economic concerns. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which counts more than 290 airlines as its members, estimate the airline industry’s losses between 2020-2022 to reach over $200 billion.

“The magnitude of the COVID-19 crisis for airlines is enormous. Over the 2020-2022 period total losses could top $200 billion. To survive airlines have dramatically cut costs and adapted their business to whatever opportunities were available. That will see the $137.7 billion loss of 2020 reduce to $52 billion this year. And that will further reduce to $12 billion in 2022. We are well past the deepest point of the crisis. While serious issues remain, the path to recovery is coming into view. Aviation is demonstrating its resilience yet again,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. “People have not lost their desire to travel as we see in solid domestic market resilience. But they are being held back from international travel by restrictions, uncertainty and complexity. More governments are seeing vaccinations as a way out of this crisis. We fully agree that vaccinated people should not have their freedom of movement limited in any way. In fact, the freedom to travel is a good incentive for more people to be vaccinated. Governments must work together and do everything in their power to ensure that vaccines are available to anybody who wants them,” he added.

Resilient Cargo The air cargo industry, on the other hand, is performing well, as industries and economies rebuild amid the continuing need to move vaccines & medical supplies around the world. Cargo is now described as “the lifeline of the aviation industry” necessary to preserve the entity of the crisis management of airlines globally. But the lack of international travel which provided 60% of international air cargo capacity due to the wide body aircraft used for long-haul trips impinges on belly capacity of the airfreight industry. Commercial Engines Overview Deliveries of aircraft dropped substantially due to the pandemic, worsened by the grounding of the 737 MAX allowing Airbus to once again surpass Boeing in deliveries. CFM International achieved a new milestone of having surpassed a combinedengine milestone of 10 million ight hours and 5 million cycles with 1400 Leap powered 737 MAX and A320 Neo – Family jets having being delivered. The Leap 1B program suffered considerably due to the grounding of the 737 MAX due to electrical issues caused the deliveries to be delayed. However, at least 31 737 MAX are expected to be delivered in the rst quarter of 2022. 188 Leap engines were delivered by CFM International in the rst quarter of 2021, down by 31% from the 272 deliveries in the rst quarter of 2020. CFM is expected to supply Southwest airlines for an order of 100 Boeing 737 MAX 7s. 850 of the 737 MAX aircraft have the Leap 1B engines, of which Boeing has delivered 470 to airlines who now have 160 of those aircraft in service and a 130 in storage. According to the Commercial engines 2021 report “Airbus, on the other hand has delivered over 940 Leap-1A powered A320 Neofamily jets since delivering the rst aircraft to Turkish carrier Pegasus in July 2016. CFM scored a recent big win from Indian lowcost carrier IndiGo, which chose Leap-1As to power 310 A320 Neofamily jets. CFM has also produced a third Leap variant, the Leap1C, for Chinese airframer Comac’s in-development C919.” The report also comments on GE’s silence of late stating “GE Aviation has been relatively quiet of late, with its largest-ever turbofan – the GE9X – being an additional year from service entry due to Boeing’s recent delay of its rst 777-9 delivery.

highest traffic at 300,000 ights. Experts attribute the trend to availability of resources to the new rich and amid growing health concerns.

Rolls Royse took a hit of $5 Billion in 2020 as a result of the pandemic while the ight hours of its engines fell to 43% of the time in 2019. In response to these set of challenges the company has focused its energy on restructuring to streamline operations for future demand. 9000 employees were laid off mainly from its civil aerospace entity along with other strategic decisions to prevent further hemorrhaging.

This has had a tremendous consequence on the private jet market as it struggles to cope with the increased demand due to a supply chain that has been stretched thin. The industry was built on an assumption of slow growth and therefore adapting the tools to the increased number of passengers is concerning to the industry.

With positive news coming in the form of successful vaccination program rollouts hope for the recovery of long haul ights has provided a positive outlook. Furthermore its Trent XWB is now the exclusive engine for the Airbus A350-900 until 2030 which will provide the necessary grounding on the road to recovery from the crisis.

Currently, there exists a shortage of new and used planes, delays in acquiring aircraft parts, shortages in the availability of ight crew and pilots and catering staff which add to the existing problems of increased demand. Private Jet Card Comparisons conducted a survey of private jet iers and found that 20% of customers had experienced service issues in recent months.

The Commercial engines 2021 report stated “The Trent XWB-84powered A350-900 has been in revenue service since Qatar Airways debuted the type in January 2015, while the higher-thrust XWB-97, which powers, the A350-1000 entered commercial service with the same airline three years later Last summer, it eliminated the backlog of 787 Dreamliners grounded while they awaited maintenance in relation to Trent 1000 blade-durability issues earlier than expected. It was assisted by low utilization during the pandemic, as well as progress on retro ts.

According to industry executives, the lack of aircraft is the crux of the problem as owners of private jets who usually hired the jets out for chartering are using the planes themselves more often hence decreasing the overall pool of aircraft availability. Private jet makers like Bombardier, Trexton and Gulfstream have all raised production to meet demands.

This meant that by March, the engine manufacturer lowered its expected overall in-service cash costs relating to Trent 1000 technical issues. As of May, there were 538 Trent 1000 engines in service on the Dreamliner, with orders for a further 158. R-R also has an exclusive position on another Airbus widebody, where the Trent 7000 equips the A330neo, which entered service with TAP Air Portugal in November 2018. There are now 90 Trent 7000s in service, with a further 535 engines on order.

The gravity of the problem becomes more apparent when an announcement by a private jet company like Sentient Jet stated that they stopped sales of jet cards as of September 30 wanting to focus on existing customers. Similarly, NetJets has stopped the sales of jet cards, fractional shares and leasing of light cabin aircraft sighting that the demand is the highest they have experienced in their 57 year history with averages reaching 500 ights a day. They stated “The vast number of ights is taxing the air travel infrastructure in ways we haven’t seen in years,” the company said. Pausing light jet sales, along with other restrictions on card buyers, “allows the company to continue prioritizing what is most important — delivering the best possible experience to all owners.”

However, this year sees the end of A380 production, on which the Trent 900 was one of two power plant options. The other rival engine for the double-decker was the Engine Alliance GP7200, developed by the GE Aviation/Pratt & Whitney joint venture that is now focused on supporting the in-service eet. The last production superjumbo will be handed over during 2021 to the A380’s biggest customer Emirates. The Dubai-based carrier ordered both Trent 900 and GP7200 engines to power its A380s. Delivery of the nal unit, powered by Trent engines, comes almost 14 years after the rst Trent-powered A380 entered service in 2007 with Singapore Airlines.”

Private Jet industry on the rise The private jet market has had an exponential growth over the course of the pandemic. Its growth continued this year with July posting the

Despite the challenges faced by the industry it does not seem like passengers who converted to ying private would revert back to commercial yet. This will provide the industry with an adequate amount of time to adapt and persevere through these testing times. Furthermore, it will force them to be more agile, reevaluating their existing business models to cater to the evolved dynamics of the market.

Middle East will need at least 3,000 new planes Boeing [NYSE: BA] forecasts the airlines in the Middle East to require 3,000 new airplanes valued at $700 billion and aftermarket services such as maintenance and repair worth $740 billion, with the region positioned to capitalize on the recovery of regional and international travel and cargo demand. Boeing provided the estimate in its 2021 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO), a forecast of 20-year demand for commercial airplanes and services. Middle East passenger traffic and the region’s commercial eet are projected to more than double over the 20-year forecast period, according to the CMO. More than twothirds of airplane deliveries to the Middle East will accommodate growth, while one-third of deliveries will replace older airplanes with more fuel-efficient models such as the 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner and 777X. “The Middle East region’s role as a global connecting hub continues to be important for developing markets to and from Southeast Asia, China and Africa,” said Randy Heisey, Boeing managing director of Commercial Marketing for the Middle East. “The region has been a leader in restoring con dent passenger travel through multi-faceted initiatives that aid international travel recovery.” Air freight represents an ongoing area of opportunity for Middle East airlines, with the freighter eet projected to nearly double from 80 airplanes in 2019 to 150 by 2040. Notably, air cargo traffic own by Middle East carriers has increased since 2020 by nearly 20%, with two of the world’s top- ve cargo carriers based in the region. Ÿ

The 2021 Middle East CMO also includes these projections through 2040:

Ÿ

To accommodate increased passenger and cargo traffic, airlines are predicted to grow their eets to 3,530 jets.

Ÿ

The region will continue to see robust widebody demand, with 1,570 deliveries supporting a growing network of international routes.

Ÿ

The current single-aisle eet of 660 airplanes is forecast to nearly triple to 1,750 jets.

Ÿ

Commercial services opportunities include eet renewal, maintenance, repair and parts supply, and operations optimization.

CHINA is becoming all powerful, economically and militarily

Pandemic or no pandemic, weaponisation will continue at frenetic pace Asian countries are arming themselves to the teeth

W

ill COVID-19 change military equations in the world? As it has taken a deadly toll in almost all countries and to a considerable extent in the most powerful country – USA – some theorists have started believing that it will, if biological or chemical weapons come into play. According to documents obtained by the US State Department and reported in the western media Chinese military scientists allegedly investigated weaponising corona viruses five years before the Covid-19 pandemic and may have predicted a World War III fought with biological weapons. The western media reported that Chinese scientists described coronaviruses – of which Covid is one example – as presenting a 'new era of genetic weapons'. However, reports indicate that pandemic or no pandemic, arms and ammunition will continue to be the sole parameter to judge a country's military strength. SARS, Ebola and now COVID-19 is not going to affect weaponisation programme in the world. One thing for sure, military power is shifting east. That USA and China may contend for the top spot in the years to come is given, but if one maps the militaries across the world, Asia seems to be outpacing all the other continents and China may get to the top spot some day.

Military | Features Of the top 10 military powers in the world – USA; Russia; China; India; Japan; South Korea; France; United Kingdom; Egypt; and Brazil, ranked as per Global Firepower – ve are in Asia; two in Europe; one each in North America, South America and Africa. The power balance it appears is heavily tilted in favour of Asia, considering the military might it together carries (and we have not included countries such as Saudi Arabia; Israel; Iran; North Korea; Pakistan; Taiwan etc which have ample repower). The nuclear power states are USA; Russia; China; France; UK; India; Pakistan and North Korea and reportedly Israel. There again, one can see the tilt towards Asia.

China one of the strongest armed forces in the world China leads Asia as one the strongest armed forces and is likely to give USA a run for its money in few decades. China already has the world's largest navy (over 350 ships and submarines) and is fast expanding its advanced missile arsenal. What makes China a formidable force? It is not just military, but its (economic) 'expansionist' moves, using trade and money power. In September 2020, the Pentagon (US Department of Defense) released a report on Chinese military wherein it said it would become stronger, growing alongside a burgeoning military-industrial complex. The Pentagon states that China has 'marshalled the resources, technology, and political will over the past two decades to strengthen and modernize the PLA (People's Liberation Army) in nearly every respect. China is already ahead of the United States in certain areas.” The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, in 2017 had announced two major goals for the PLA: to complete modernization by 2035 and become a 'world class' military by mid-century. This is a very clear strategic thinking as regards to its international expansionist moves. China already has a military base in Djibouti and is looking at military logistics facilities in Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, the Seychelles, Tanzania, Angola and Tajikistan.

Modernisation of India's armed forces

The next most powerful countries in Asia are India and Japan, ranked fourth and fifth respectively. Both these countries rank highly in their economic capability, the former has a huge market and is aggressively working on creating an ecosystem for defence-industrial base under its 'Make in India' programme. With approximately 1.4 million personnel, the Indian Army has become the world's largest ground force, ahead of China. As per China's state-run Xinhua news agency, China had reduced its size of army personnel by about 50 per cent and was focussed on boosting its navy and air force as a strategic shift of becoming a lethal and comprehensive modern force. India is also considering reducing its active force. India has also embarked upon modernisations plans for the armed forces, but is strapped for funds, though it holds the number one spot as the world's arms importer, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Between 2015 and 2019, India accounted for 22.5 per cent of share in worldwide acquisition of drones. India has an edge in the number of army personnel and tanks (India 4,200 and China 3,200) but China has 33,000 armoured ghting vehicles compared to India's 8,600. India has to secure its massive land border (about 15,000 km) and the coastline (7,500 km) and is ramping up its armed forces, despite fund crunch. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the US has noted “We believe India considers its security concerns in the Indian Ocean over the long term are as important as those with Pakistan and China. Indian officials are concerned that instability in some regional states could invite outside intervention. India has tried to counter the build-up of the US and Soviet forces in the region with diplomatic efforts, including support for the UN Indian Ocean Zone of Peace proposal, but these efforts have been largely ineffective. As a result, India is pursuing naval and other military modernization and expansion programs that we believe are designed to improve its ability to secure its regional position.”

Japan's strategy of deterring war As for Japan which ranks fourth, it has three aircraft carriers (China has one) and 287 combat aircraft and is controlling a tract of ocean reaching thousands of nautical miles from its southern coast, keeping a tab on ship movement from China. “China is the biggest single factor accounting for military modernisation and build-ups in the region,” says Denny Roy, senior fellow at the East-West Center, a U.S. think tank. Sheila A.Smith in her book 'Japan Rearmed: The Politics of Military Power' writes “Deterring war rather than waging it has become the purpose of Japan's military power.” Japan's paci st postwar constitution renounced “the use of force as a means of settling international disputes” and Japan's military – the Self-Defense Force (SDF) – “continues to be dedicated to an exclusively defensive mission.” Allying with the United States “has provided strategic protection for Japan, deterring its nuclear neighbours with America's nuclear umbrella.”

South Korea's defense budget is among the highest globally

South Korea's defense budget is among the highest globally South Korea and North Korea are like India and Pakistan, facing constant threat of each other. As its northern neighbour is unpredictable and with reportedly nuclear capabilities, South Korea has put in place one of the largest and powerful militaries. It has a reported personnel strength of 3,699,000 in 2018 (599,000 active and 3,100,000 reserve) and has one of the highest defense budgets in the world with $45 billion.

In South and South East Asia, there are other countries such as Pakistan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia which have equipped themselves militarily. However, political equations of each country differ, one can see that China backs Pakistan while it nds Taiwan as an adversary. Accordingly, the military build up is taking place in the region.

Growing military power in the Middle East Coming to the Middle East which is a hotbed for con ict, there are various powers at play and the United States is pretty actively involved in the affairs of many. Middle Eastern Islamic countries do not get along with Israel; and Sunni countries have major issues with Shia Iran; Kingdom of Saudi Arabia cannot stand Qatar and there is the huge oil wealth which interests external powers, primarily the US. Luke Coffey and Nicole Robinson in an article in Heritage Foundation have stated that strategically situated at the intersection of Europe, Asia and Africa, the Middle East has long been an important focus of United States foreign policy. “U.S. security relationships in the region are built on pragmatism, shared security concerns, and economic interests, including large sales of U.S. arms to countries in the region to help them defend themselves. The U.S. also has a long-term interest in the Middle East that derives from the region's economic importance as the world's primary source of oil and gas.” The Middle East has over half of the world's oil reserves and the top exporter of oil.

Arms imports by Middle Eastern countries increased 61% The United Arab Emirates (UAE); the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA); Iran; Iraq; Israel and Turkey are among the countries which wield military power in the region and beyond. SIPRI has cited that arms imports by countries in the Middle East increased by 61 per cent between 2000-2014 and 2015-2019 and accounted for 35 per cent of the total global arms imports over the past ve years. Saudi Arabia was the world's largest arms importer in 2015-19, imports having increased by 130 per cent compared with the previous ve year period. It's defence budget in 2017 was a whopping $69.413 billion.

Military | Features Iraq reportedly comes second in terms of arms spend ($19.3 billion, a cool $50 billion less than KSA), considering that it has been in constant battles. Iraq has an active personnel of 64,000. The US attacked Iraq in 2003 on the pretext that it had weapons of mass destruction and got rid of Saddam Hussein, thus making ample room for its presence there.

UAE ranks top among GCC The UAE is ranked top among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Its defence budget in 2017 was $14.37 billion. The UAE Armed Forces has the primary responsibility for the defence of all seven emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. The force strength is about 100,000. Interestingly, the UAE has started a process to encourage indigenous production of military equipment, in its bid to reduce dependence on foreign powers. The Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding company is working on design and development of six corvettes customised for operation in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. UAE has started manufacturing ammunition, unmanned aerial vehicles and other defence related vehicles.

Iran's home-grown defence industry Iran has reportedly a military strength of 523,000 and a budget of $16 billion. According to reports, Iran has 350,000 in the army, 18,000 in the navy, 30,000 in the air force and another 125,000 in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp. Iran has been isolated and international sanctions have led the country to develop a homegrown defence industry.

Post states that of that amount, about 30 percent goes to products of a military nature. By comparison, only 2 percent of German R&D and 17 percent of US R&D is for the military. And Israel was the rst country in the world to operate drones in combat operations and is exporting to drones to several countries, including India.

Turkey's vibrant defence industry

Israel invests heavily in military R&D

Turkey is a country to watch. Under a strong leadership it has been making its presence felt in several areas. It has a vibrant defence industry, manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and even attack helicopters. It has an active personnel of 355,800 and a budget of $10.2 billion (2017).

Israel has 176,500 personnel on active service, made up of 133,000 in the army, which includes 107,000 conscripts. Always in a state of readiness, the nation of Israel elds one of the most capable military forces in the world - despite its size. It is ranked 18 of 138 countries. Today, Israel is a high-tech superpower and one of the world's top weapons exporters with approximately $6.5 billion in annual arms sales. Despite Israel being a small country, about 4.5 percent of its GDP is spent on research and development. An article in New York

The Middle East has smaller powers but with substantial in uence from the western powers, whereas in the rest of Asia, China and India are two major powers that are going to get bigger with wider regional rami cations. The developed west understands this scenario well and has drawn up its own strategic moves to have some kind of power balance. Hence, Asia is a critical element for western powers who have ruled the world due to their developed economies. But Asia is soon going to surpass that. Aviation Guide - Year Book 2022

ir carriers around the world are facing extreme nancial pressures and are cutting capacity at unparalleled rates in the absence of meaningful passenger demand. Some airlines have shut down completely, a portion of these may never return. There is an effort to reopen the economy and Transportation Security Administration statistics are showing a slight move upward in the number of travelers screened at airports, but ticket sales took a hit after COVID-19 cases surged around the world recently. Given that some regions of the world have been emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic sooner than others, their airlines have been more aggressive in restoring planes to service. For instance, in response to rising domestic air travel numbers, Chinese airlines have put back into service 91 percent of the aircraft they sent to storage, meaning the eet is quickly approaching pre-COVID levels. But while demand has revived, there are new viral outbreaks that the Chinese government will have to contain to keep business growing. In contrast, North America — a region that has not contained the virus yet — has restored only 46 percent. Even so, the region’s aircraft are seeing very low utilization, given the uncertain conditions and sporadic demand. Most aircraft returning to service are narrow-bodies. This re ects their current popularity with airlines because of cost efficiency. They also tend to dominate domestic travel, which is the rst market segment that is showing signs of recovery. In contrast to wide -bodies, there have also been signi cantly fewer announcements on early narrow-body retirements by airlines. Based on Oliver Wyman modelling, domestic air travel would not match 2019 levels until mid-2022. International travel is not expected to match 2019 totals until mid-2023. The global MRO market is growing at a CAGR of 1.72% and was expected to sustain the growth rate in attaining a market value of $660 billion by 2020. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.5 percent by the end of 2023 (Beroe Advantage Procurement). North America and Europe are highly mature markets with the highest penetration of global distributors. On the other hand, markets in the Asia Paci c (APAC) and the Middle East and Africa (MEA) are showing medium and low maturity levels respectively. Similarly, both the North American and European MRO markets also possess high growth potential in terms of adoption of modern business models, e-procurement, increased outsourcing levels, and vendor consolidation.

Insight into the aftermarket services industry Industrial manufacturers are steadily providing more aftermarket services—the broad category that includes the sale and delivery of maintenance, spare parts and other value-added services. And the same is true in the aerospace and defense sector, where MRO primarily comprise the aftermarket services industry.

Features | MRO the commercial aircraft aftermarket parts industry. The increasing air traffic, and renewal of aircraft eet further increase the need for periodic repairs and replacements of aircraft parts. Increasing average age of commercial aircrafts also encourages companies to maintain their eet. Martynas Balsys, Sales Team Lead at Magnetic MRO explains how the MRO spare parts market has been affected by Covid-19 and which are the most asked for parts by airlines in the industry in an email interview.

Importance of critical spare parts and components Considering the importance critical spare parts play in maintaining efficient manufacturing and industrial production today, every manager dreads costly ‘down time’ caused by insufficient or inadequate inventory supply measures. MRO spares play an important role in ensuring smoothly owing production environments. Today, many brands of industrial equipment require the availability of speci c replacement parts and supplies. Spares generally fall into two broad categories: repairable and consumable items.

This shift appears to be taking place as more customers are emphasizing service-level agreements that guarantee product uptime. Customers are looking for service providers who can proactively support their equipment before it is out of service—and they’re willing to pay a price premium in return. The global commercial aircraft aftermarket parts market size was valued at $28.7 billion in 2017 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 6.6% during the forecast period. The market includes activities required for maintenance of commercial aircrafts after initial sale till the end of its lifecycle. Moreover, the market supplies components such as MRO parts, spare parts, rotable replacement parts, spare parts, accessories, lubricants and appearance products required in repair and maintenance of commercial aircrafts (Polaris Market Research). The demand for commercial aircraft aftermarket parts products has increased owing to growing need to maintain and repair aircrafts in order to increase longevity and address safety concerns. Growing airline eets as well as increasing demand for replaceable components among others drive the growth of the commercial aircraft aftermarket parts industry. The major driving factors of the market include growing aviation industry, and increasing manufacturing of aircraft components. efore aviation training management systems like MoMook by BAA training were adopted, studying aviation in a typical flight school involved a lot of stationary use and phone tag. This practice still persists in some parts of the industry though digitalization predominantly overshadows this. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, digitalization was accelerated, pushing the industry towards a more paperless future in warp speed. Experts denote the positive effects of training management systems, saying the impact has put in happier students, lower overhead and fewer error reporting. They also free up time for owners to focus on the core task of teaching people to y. The Aircraft Simulation Driving Market is estimated to be $3.7 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach $7.7 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 4.2% from 2019 to 2027, according to In nity Business Insights. According to IATA, the idea of going paperless in the industry is simple: To have all necessary maintenance documentation available electronically, with major parts tagged to support the process. The move would ensure all aircraft major parts have backto-birth records that show compliance with the necessary regulations and quality controls at all times, for example. This would protect the asset value of the part—and indeed of an entire aircraft—effectively advertising it as ‘one careful owner’. Safety would also win. No expiration date would be missed, and any overhaul or repair would be done only by a quali ed person/organization. Every single part could be checked, negating the need for the still-extant statistical sampling. Ramunas Bucinskas, MoMook Development Team Leader tells how their software helps to create a synergy between hardware and software to a paperless future.

So the journey Go Paperless MOMook is a road to a paperless future because it minimizes the paper resources used by training organizations. Instead, it gives them an all-in-one environment where they can efficiently navigate. The team is constantly upgrading the tool along the way so it gets more advanced and sustainable. “All user documents can be kept within a user pro le. Student grading and student journals, online examination, training materials are all available in MOMook. Simulator tech logs and a history of defects and planning are also done via MOMook, which allows us to go paperless. “It is not an easily accomplishable task because of the regulatory base. Regulators require some paper documents, and paper is the preferred means for some other players in the industry. However, IATA is calling to actively move towards paperless operation while assuring aviation safety, security and environmental sustainability”.

has already begun with many companies applying software solutions that boost efficiency and reduce waste. However, still much more can be done. “A paperless future in aviation training means cost savings, work efficiency and a positive environmental impact. Any reduction of paper consumption has a positive ecological impact, lowers costs and increases convenience for all involved in aviation training pilots, aviation training organizations, airlines, etc. “The COVID–19 has heavily affected all aviation businesses, including aviation training. It was an unprecedented challenge as borders were closing, travel demand was declining and precautionary measures were being implemented. However, according to Boeing, the effect Covid-19 had on pilot demand over the next 20 years equals just a 5% reduction. Accordingly, only a 3.9% reduction in required technicians and engineers. Many aviation training centers, such as BAA Training, continued their expansion plans, adapted to the situation and temporarily transferred pilot training to the online environment, keeping the operation going,” said Bucinskas.

ccidents and life threatening medical emergencies require a quick and timely approach to save lives. Depending on the patient’s condition, location and the calculated risks associated with delays in handling the situation, emergency response could come in the form of land-based EMS or air ambulance which provides a unique form of immediate medical relief to patients. Air ambulances, which include both aircraft and helicopters, are fully equipped with the required medical equipment and facilities to provide immediate assistance to patients in remote or relatively inaccessible locations. An increase in the number of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes coupled with the rising number of moving vehicle accidents (MVAs) demands an efficient ambulatory service leading to a global growth of air ambulance services. The global air ambulance market was valued at only $5.24 billion in 2020 but is projected to reach $14.2 billion by 2030 growing at 10.6% CAGR within the decade.

Air Ambulance | Features The COVID-19 crisis has led to massive disruptions across industries leading to considerable friction in supply chains that created challenges in production and sales of air ambulances. Innovations in medical devices and the rise of digital health technologies usher better remote management of patients by healthcare providers and their integration with air ambulances creates an environment of improved care delivery. Equipping air ambulances with critical care equipment further enables physicians to better prepare for cases while analyzing the real time data from the air ambulance. Technological advancements are not limited to healthcare as emergency medical services aircraft have witnessed the creation of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (AAVs) that led to considerable success in deployment. EHang, a leading manufacturer of AAVs, successfully transported medical professionals, staff and medical supplies in its two passenger drone. Furthermore, the manufacturer developed an ambulance drone known as Ambular in partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the purpose of swiftly tackling health related emergencies. Similarly, Kyathi and the International Critical Air Transfer Team (ICATT) jointly launched a xed-wing aircraft ambulance which was equipped with an isolation pod permitting the safe transportation of patients infected with COVID-19. These trends are expected to contribute to the overall growth of the air ambulance market globally and inspire further innovation in the industry. The primary challenge air ambulances face is the service charge associated with their use as they are naturally signi cantly costlier than land based emergency medical services. Although insurance providers may cover some of the costs associated with air medical services, reimbursements are quite low. These challenges prevent the growth of the air medical services market across the globe.

COVID-19 may seem like the perfect trampoline for air ambulances to spring into action, but its propulsion has been stunted due to the logistical challenges posed by the pandemic. The inability to position crew and aircraft, the lack of commercial airline availability, crew quarantines, crew rest logistics, grounding of medical staff at airports and the requirement of COVID-19 tests for family members all presented unique challenges to the industry.

Despite the challenges outlined, the global air ambulance market is expected to exhibit organic growth in the next ve years as the insights from the healthcare sector clearly identi ed. The increasing number of accidents, adverse cardiovascular events and other medical conditions that demand urgent medical action all create a demand that can only be replenished with the existence of air ambulances which can transport patients to the relevant facilities at the shortest possible time. Furthermore, access to remote areas is only possible through the existence of air ambulances and with technological advancements that allow online booking of the services adoption is only likely to increase.

B

illionaires Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and Elon Musk are fulfilling their childhood dreams of space travel, but many experts have asked whether it can go beyond their wish-fulfillment. Nothing is known how space travel can benefit humankind. Another billionaire and Microsoft founder, Bill Gates has a totally different take on space tourism. When asked why some billionaires were obsessed with space travel, Gates said “I don't know” and then added, rightly so, “I've become obsessed with things like Malaria and HIV and getting rid of those diseases… ... “Space? You know, we have a lot to do here on Earth.”

Bezos and Branson will go down in history as pioneers of suborbital space travel as their respective entities, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, have lined up space tourism with per person per trip costing anywhere between US$20-25 million. There is also SpaceX which is planning to send space tourists, including Yusaku Maezawa, on a free-return trajectory around the Moon on the Starship. Elon Musk, TESLA and SpaceX Founder, announced the Starship will be ready for an unpiloted trip to Mars in 2022 and a crewed ight in 2024. Similarly, NASA in 2019 announced that it aims to start allowing private astronauts to go on the International Space Station (ISS), with the use of SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft and Boeing Starliner spacecraft for public astronauts, at a cost of US$35,000 per day and an estimated US$50 million for the ride there and back.

Space communication is transformational There is are a lot happening in space travel, but questions remain on comparable bene ts. However, when it comes to space communication technologies there is no denying the fact that it has been transformational, to say the least. The ISS has been a marvel of cooperative engineering, science and research and NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN)

networks have connected station astronauts to Earth and empowered profound research on the orbiting laboratory. At its heart is the complex task of communicating with space resembling wireless communications at home – only on an enormous scale and at incredible distances.

Military and civilian applications From the world's rst ever satellite Sputnik launched on October 4, 1957, space technologies have come a long way. According to reports, 40 countries have launched nearly 9,000 satellites, of which an estimated 5,000 are still in orbit and only 3,371 are said to be operational, the rest have outlived and become space debris. The United States has the most with 1,897 satellites. China, Russia and India are the other top satellite launching countries. Satellites are used to for military and civilian applications. Some of the applications, include, Earth observation, communications, navigation, weather forecast and space telescopes.

Record-setting growth in satellite launches The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) said in 2021 State of the Satellite Industry Report that despite the pandemic, the global space industry continued to grow in 2020 and the commercial satellite industry exhibited record-setting growth in the number of

Aviation Guide - Year Book 2022

Features | Space Technology satellites launched into orbit as well as other economic metrics including capital investment in commercial space ventures. The 2021 report pointed out that for the third straight year a record number of satellites were launched into space during 2020, more than tripling the number launched in the previous year. By 2020, the total number of satellites circling the earth increased by 37 percent, compared to 17 percent in 2019. Innovation piqued the interest level of the investment community in 2020 as special purpose acquisition companies or SPACs raised over six times the previous annual total in investment capital. The reports also show that despite several record-breaking or key growth metrics, the global COVID-19 pandemic impacted users of satellite services throughout the year and therefore certain satellite industry revenues during 2020.

Space economy generates $371 billion revenue The overall global space economy generated revenue of $371 billion in 2020, an increase of 1.4% compared to 2019. The commercial satellite industry once again continued to be dominant, accounting for $271 billion or nearly 73 percent of the world's space business. Technology innovations increased data capacity and helped increase subscribers as satellite broadband revenue grew by 10 percent during 2020 to $2.8 billion. Innovations in radio frequency (RF), carbon emission and other mapping capabilities helped increase satellite remote sensing revenues by 12 percent compared with the previous 12 months to $2.6 billion. D u r i n g 2 0 2 0 , r e ve n u e s g e n e r a t e d b y commercial launch services increased by 9 percent to $5.3 billion as the U.S. solidified its market share leadership in launch services. Global satellite ground equipment revenues maintained 4 percent growth over the previous year to just over $135 billion, led by c o n t i n u e d wo r l d w i d e s a l e s o f g l o b a l navigation satellite system (GNSS) terminals such as smartphones and tablets.

CubeSats are popular Expansion was fueled largely by ground equipment and launch services. The growth of satellites has been driven by the consumer. Low earth orbit (LEO) satellites which orbit between 200 and 2000 km from earth are becoming popular.

and more than 90 have been destroyed in launch failures. Small or CubeSats allow for cheaper designs and advancements in industrial technologies enable their mass production.

Mobile communications The Ka-band systems for mobile satellite communications initiative is another notable development. Developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen, Germany, as well as various partner organizations, KASYMOSA aims to make satellite technologies more broadly usable in the mobile space. Consumer-tier satellite phone calls, improved emergency response efforts in crisis situations and other radical functions are all possible through further Ka-band development. NASA's Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) is the project to meet future space communications and navigation system needs by de ning an open architecture for NASA space and ground software-de ned radios (SDRs). The STRS project is currently developing the standard to provide a common, consistent framework to abstract the application software from the radio platform hardware to reduce the cost and risk of using complex recon gurable and reprogrammable radio systems across NASA missions.

Emerging technologies The space industry is utilizing emerging technologies including 5G, advanced satellite systems, 3D printing, big data, and quantum technology to upgrade and scale activity and operations in space. Many services such as weather forecasting, remote sensing, global positioning system (GPS) navigation, satellite television, and longdistance communications systems critically rely on space infrastructure.

CubeSats - satellites which have existed since 2000 are being deployed regularly.

When it comes to space technology, NASA has always been one of the key research bodies. Future space technologies will rely heavily on robotics and AI to assist human teams of astronauts.

Arizona State University researchers Elizabeth Garbee and Andrew Maynard, writing in The Conversation, said that the tiny LEO devices could potentially spread to the consumer market.

Researchers hope that robots will be able to perform maintenance and repairs on existing space stations while aiding scientists with data collection and analysis.

Their low cost of operation and exibility makes them highly viable for scienti c explorations, according to a study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

In fact, the ISS already has a robot assistant named Robonaut 2, and NASA hopes to have a whole team one day.

As of August 2021, more than 1600 CubeSats have been launched Aviation Guide - Year Book 2022

Blockchain | Breakthroughs

W

e’ve all heard about cryptocurrency and its power to change the way we use money. The concept has actually been around as early as 2009 and the most popular of these is Bitcoin. Cryptocurrencies are essentially unregulated decentralized digital currencies. When Bitcoin was launched in 2009, its value was $0 but today a single Bitcoin is worth over $62,000. El Salvador was the rst country in the world to adopt a law declaring Bitcoin as a recognized legal tender despite concerns about its volatility and stability. A signi cant part of Bitcoin’s success is Blockchain, the open source technology otherwise known as distributed ledger which keeps and maintains a list of generated records stored in blocks. Each block contains the history of every block, constantly veri ed, updated and shared between thousands of computers across the globe. These computers are called nodes. In todays digital world, blockchain is being considered as a revolutionary alternative to conventional approach of streamlining the process to reduce inefficiencies and errors caused by middlemen. Blockchain has many use cases for Airline industry , it can create most transparent workflow in complex processes like Baggage tracking , Identity verification , Ticket overbooking, automated payments, aircraft maintenance, loyalty programs etc. Here’s how:

Automated payments—Smart contract applications in the Blockchain systems can eliminate the errors caused by middlemen and automate the payments in the most transparent way, smart contracts by default have their own set of rules designed while coding the contract. These systems can bring commendable transparency in areas such as Loyalty settlements, billing among airlines, billing between travel agencies and airlines, the issuance of travel insurance, etc.nge their ownership

Baggage tracking—Blockchain brings transparency in tracking the location and status of the passenger baggage and cargo as these assets frequently change custody right from the deposit location to receiver location. Blockchain allows passengers and authorities to locate their luggage awlessly at all times to make travel experience much smoother. Identity veri cation—The design system and implementation of Blockchain in identity veri cation can bring great transparency in verifying the identity of the passengers by tracking crucial biometric data, document data and ticketing data issued by different airline providers throughout the globe. By implementing Blockchain into the airline systems, passengers have a chance to directly enter the airport without middlemen intervention. It greatly enhances their experience by putting an end to longer periods of waiting in a queue.

Aircraft maintenance—Similar to the ownership changes in private and commercial vehicles, aircraft also may change their ownership many times over their lifetime. The tracking and tracing of crucial information related to the aircraft is often a tedious process. Blockchain based systems can greatly reduce the trust based issues per taining to aircraft maintenance history, ownership change, among other things in a seamless way. Loyalty programs—Loyalty points also known as rewards of frequent ier programs (FFP’s), the use of Blockchain in loyalty programs will add exibility to the work ow and thereby can streamline the process of earning, spending, accounting and reconciliation of points gained over a period of time in the most transparent way possible. Incorporating Blockchain based crypto currencies into individual systems can further give customers a more exible options to redeem the points across different platforms.

Ticket overbooking—Ticket overbooking is one of the serious bottleneck problems which the airline industry has been facing for decades. By incorporating Blockchain technology into the ticketing system, smart contract system based applications can automate the process of ticket issuance by airlines in a much more transparent way.

Blockchain is a decentralised , immutable consensus based technology which is capable of solving many existing bottle neck problems not only in airlines but across different industries, Blockchain is still in its very early days, but evolving rapidly. Blockchain is Web 3.0 which eventually be adopted across multiple rapidly evolving domains such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics , Internet of things (IOT), Machine Learning (ML) , Gaming, Metaverse, Non-Fungible tokens ( NFT’s ) , Decentralised Autonomous organisations (DAO’s) etc as this is the only proven and established alternative to conventional middlemen dependent trust based systems , Future is Open-Source and Blockchain has edge over any other existing technology because of its most important distributed nature.

Breakthroughs | Space Tourism

SPACE TOURISM U

nited Arab Emirates, the UAE, is entering into a space tourism partnership with Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin aerospace company which would see the possible construction of a spaceport to allow space tourism flights to lift off from a desert location in the UAE. In an interview with The National, Brent Sherwood, senior vice president of advanced development programs for Blue Origin, said the UAE was an “obvious choice” for a spaceport and that it was looking to expand its launch sites from the current one in El Paso, Texas. Sherwood said that after spending the night in Sharjah, the thirdmost populous city in the United Arab Emirates, after Dubai and Abu Dhabi, he thought it was “very promising to think about areas here,” now that Blue Origin is operational for tourism. To date, Blue Origin has own two all civilian crew missions to the edge of space from the company’s launch pad in West Texas; the latest included Star Trek actor William Shatner, who at 90 years old, became the oldest person to cross the Kármán line – the imaginary boundary 100 kilometers above Earth's mean sea level that is internationally recognized as the beginning of outer space. The UAE is now home to several major space companies and has a total foreign trade in aerospace vehicles and their parts reaching Dh190 billion, therefore Blue Origin would be well placed to capitalize on what some see as an industry that for the foreseeable future, at least, is primarily funded by and for the very rich.
