Carmel-Carmel Youth Assistance Program. Left to right ( MKelanie Lentz (ex-officio, CYAP board member), Guenter Haines (President of CYAP), and Maggie Figge (Intervention Advocate for CYAP. )

The Carmel Youth Assistance Program (CYAP) will host its inaugural Carmel Gala-Designing Bright Futures with Honorary Chair, Mayor Jim Brainard, on May 6, 2017. All proceeds from the event will benefit CYAP programs, which provide tutoring, mentoring, summer camps, and other assistance to Carmel youth and their families.

C

armel Youth Assistance Program (CYAP) was formed in Fall 2015 to help strengthen youth and families through community involvement. Like other peer Youth Assistance Programs throughout Hamilton County, local volunteers develop and provide access to programs and services that promote positive growth experiences and enhance home and community relationships. CYAP works in collaboration with the Carmel Clay School District, city of Carmel, and the Hamilton County Superior Court. CYAP is one of six offices serving students and their families in the county. Melanie Lentz, Community Relations & Economic Development Project Manager at City of Carmel, spoke about the city’s

support of CYAP and collaboration in organizing the City of Carmel Gala. “The city has a vested interest in the organization,” Lentz said. “Other programs in the county have a ‘mayor’s ball’ or some sort of annual fundraiser. After discussion, the decision was made that the Carmel Gala would benefit the CYAP and its programs while incorporating the arts and things that benefit our community’s youth. The theme for the inaugural gala is Designing Bright Futures, and that is our focus. Our goal is that the Carmel Gala will be the CYAP’s largest annual fundraiser going forward.” CYAP Board President Guenter Haines discussed what the organization’s goals are for 2017 and beyond. “The whole strategy around the gala besides

8

its principal fund-raising mechanism, is creating a celebration of our city and what we’re about with the main focus being on our community’s children,” Haines said. “What we want to see is a perfect balance of people who just want to have a wonderful night out while celebrating a wonderful cause. It also allows the opportunity for us to potentially recruit members of our community as volunteers or mentors, as well as engaging corporate partners in perpetuity for this wonderful not-for-profit.” Haines explained that the reason why the youth assistance programs work is because the programs are hyperlocal and that the CYAP is a franchise of a great concept that was started in Hamilton County. The Early Intervention Advocates in each community work under the appointment of Judge Paul Felix, Hamilton County Circuit Court and Judge Steven Nation, Hamilton County Superior Court 1. “When you have a community 85,000 people and with that, mental health issues that cross the boundaries of socioeconomic status, that in and of itself is a challenge,” Haines said. “Many of us are one job or major health issue from being in crisis and needing the services that CYAP provides. We all likely know somebody in that situation. The children are the first in the family that typically manifest the challenges of the family and the teachers are usually the first people to see that. Our purpose is to be proactive rather than reactive. By the time the children get into the probate system, many times it is too late.” According to Haines, the board will be able to focus on creating a “war chest” of funding from the proceeds of the gala. Along with the grants from the city and county, the funds will enable the CYAP to expediently assist children and increase their staff and programs to stay ahead of the unbelievable demand that exists in the community. The CYAP will also continue to create opportunities for the local youth to assist their peers through peer tutoring initiatives and fundraising opportunities. The concept is to raise awareness and empower the

MARCH 2017

2017-02-22 2:12 PM

children to help their peers while building their own self-worth. Maggie Figge, early intervention advocate for CYAP, was a social worker at Creekside Middle School for six years prior to joining CYAP. Her familiarity with the school principals, guidance counselors, and teachers has benefited her advocacy efforts as she met with every school in the Carmel Clay Schools system to educate them about CYAP’s role and purpose. “CYAP would not be running without the partnership between the city and the school system,” Figge emphasized. “One thing that I stress to the schools when I go and speak with them is not to wait. Don’t wait until the wheels completely fall off the bus. At the first sign of difficulty, whether it’s an academic or behavior shift, get the child involved so that we can get the resources that they need and stabilize that child and family before they’re on a completely different trajectory,” she said.

The CYAP program accepts children between 3 to 17 years old. Figge has 3 and 4-year olds currently in her case load. “It is important to get involved when the children are young,” she said. “They are still malleable and resilient at those younger ages. I believe that our message of early intervention is being heard because the majority of my cases are elementary-aged students.” Every teacher, guidance counselor, first responder, etc., has access to their own confidential login and ID to the CYAP website where they can enter a child and begin the process of receiving assistance for the child. Figge can then engage and reach out to the family in a non-threatening scenario because she is not from the state or county, and the parents feel at ease speaking with her. Figge shared a recent success story with a local child who is currently living with a foster family in Carmel. “This particular child is a great kid,” Figge said.

“Unfortunately, he has a really dramatic background, and so the foster family, who went through foster parent training, recognized that he was manifesting behavioral issues and got connected with me quickly. CYAP paid for the musical instrument rental fee for the family because the child was interested in band and music. It is now his favorite class and he has made like-minded friends in his band class. Now he is willing to go to school every day and he is developing confidence. There just isn’t a way to measure the value of that.” For more information on the CYAP, or to contact Maggie Figge, Early Intervention Advocate, Carmel: maggie.figge@hamiltoncounty.in.gov mfigge@ccs.k12.in.us (317) 501-1739 (317) 571-4005 Ext. 2664 www.Youthassistance.org and click on the Carmel tab. he Indiana Ballet Conservatory, an organization that has garnered a national and international reputation in ballet instruction excellence, recently announced its schedule for this summer’s camps. The IBC will be offering two camps with each designed to serve a different age group and level of proficiency. For children ages 3-5 years old the IBC is offering its 7th annual Summer Storybook Camp and for students 6-9 years old it is offering the 8th annual Young Dancer Intensive. Each of the camps are open to boys and girls. The Summer Storybook Camp is a great way to introduce your young child to the wonders of ballet while they are having fun. The day is divided into segments of formal ballet instruction, a story time that introduces them to the literature and stories behind some of the great ballets and an activities/crafts session geared toward developing a better understanding of the world of ballet. This camp runs from June

5-16 and will be taught by IBC Preparatory Division instructor and a former graduate of the school, Courtney Messier. Campers can attend the entire two-week camp or just for a single week. The camp runs from 9:00am-12:00pm with early drop off and late pick up also being offered. No prior ballet training is required. As the name suggest, the Young Dancer Intensive is geared for a student with some ballet training. The IBC recommends that campers have a minimum of 1 year of training. This camp runs from June 5-23 for ages 8-9, with a one-week offering from June 19-23 for ages 6-7. The Young Dancer Intensive is offered as a complete program that includes instruction in ballet technique, original choreography, conditioning/stretching, historical dance, and seminars on nutrition and wellness. The camp runs from 9:00am1:00pm. The Young Dancer Intensive will be taught Hailey Agran, the Head of the IBC Preparatory Division and has been teaching this program for several years.

Moving More Than Your Boxes

Most people cringe at the thought of moving. Moving is believed to be one of the most stressful life changes for adults. But the actual act of moving doesn’t have to be a miserable experience if you hire the right moving team. Writer // Janelle Morrison

Y

ou Move Me Indianapolis is here to move you while raising the bar in the moving industry. In addition to the uniformed, highly-trained, and friendly team of movers, You Move Me offers a full menu of services while placing customer service at the top of its priorities. Your moving team will even show up on the morning of the move with a cup of fresh coffee to get the experience off on the right foot. Communication is a close second priority after customer service for this moving company. You Move Me’s local franchise owner, Keith Moore, emphasized that direct and honest communication with his customers is vital to a successful move. A local resident, Moore appreciates the importance of providing exceptional service in his community and throughout his service area. He also understands the need to ensure his customers that his team consists of highly-skilled team members who have gone through background checks and extensive training before they are permitted to move the customers’ belongings. “A large part of what differentiates us from our competition is our level of communication,” Moore said. “We stress that during the on-site estimating meeting and again when our team arrives at the customer’s house on moving day. We will conduct another walk-through to reconfirm what is moving, what is staying, and what may be left that needs to be packed. We will also inspect the items before we move them and report any damage, stains, cracks, etc., that may be discovered so that we are keeping that open and honest chain of communication throughout the entire process.” You Move Me will leave no furniture surface uncovered or exposed. The 24-foot and 20-foot moving trucks are packed with materials and equipment to help make the move seamless and less stressful for the homeowners.

Efficient, accurate estimate, honest, professional, friendly, and pleasant to work with. Keith did a great job of walking us through the process and coordinating the move, and Trellis ran the team of movers effectively to make the process as pleasant as it can be.” - Nick Zaborenko, Indianapolis

“There are currently 12 members of our team, and as we ramp up into the summer ‘moving season’, we will bring on 20-25 team members to ensure our ability to serve our customers seven days a week,” Moore explained. “We are always looking for people who love the customer interaction and who want to be part of a team atmosphere.” You Move Me is a family-owned business, embedded in the local community, that builds relationships with other businesses and organizations. Moore, along with his family and team members, believe that it is important to be part of a bigger team and is active in the Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County. If you are actively considering moving or are looking to store some furniture in an off-site CARMEL MONTHLY

Bayley, a long-time Carmel resident, has touched and enriched the lives of countless individuals and not-forprofits throughout Indiana. Along with his wife, Dianne, the couple through personal giving and volunteer leadership have helped raise millions of dollars for their causes. Those who know Bayley, personally, can attest that he is a gentleman for the ages. His kind demeanor and genuine passion for helping others has set the bar high for his peers and apprentices.

B

ayley, 81, has enjoyed a long and successful career with David A. Noyes, a local wealth management and investment-banking firm. He has been the Chairman of the Board since 1978 and began his career with the firm right out of college. He was hired on in 1958 after graduating from the University of Illinois and Northwestern University and has made a lifetime career with the firm. “It has been the only job that I have ever held and I plan to keep working,” Bayley said. “My kids have told me that I can’t ever lose my job because I don’t have a resume. Hence, I am very determined to keep my job.”

Bayley and his wife, Dianne, raised their twin daughters, Kim and Chris (now deceased) and their son, Michael, in the community. Bayley developed the Winterwood neighborhood in which he and wife have resided for more than three decades. Bayley’s firm was the investment bank for the Shorewood Corporation, which developed the Morse and Geist Reservoirs in the 1970s. He purchased the first lot in the Morse development where he and his wife enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Mark Damer, president and CEO of David A. Noyes, has worked with L.H. going on 10 years and shared some of his observations and stories on L.H.

“L.H. considers his business his family,” Damer said. “Many other broker-dealer firms are shrinking all over the nation, so ours is a unique story of survival and long-term success because of the competitive nature and change that is going on in our industry. We have survived that largely in part due to the leadership of L.H. Bayley.” Damer shared a personal story about Bayley that best exhibited Bayley’s love and appreciation for horse-power and a bit of his vivacious passion for life. “I remember going up to Morse Reservoir back in high school, the late 1970s, and the lake wasn’t very developed back then. It is a man-made reservoir so the

developers were still in the processing of clearing out the debris that was underwater. There were a lot of idol zones. One Saturday afternoon, my friends and I were hanging out in one of the coves when suddenly, we hear this loud, high-speed engine sound coming from a cigarette boat. This is the kind of high-performance racing boat that one sees out in the ocean, going speeds of 80-90 mph. Here comes this cigarette boat, driven by none other than L.H. Bayley. It has been said by his own family, ‘L.H. does like his horsepower.’” Bayley’s affinity for boats and cars has been exhibited over the years through his automobile collection that included classics such as his beloved 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible. Bayley has exhibited this car at Artomobilia, a fantastic exhibition that takes place annually in the Arts & Design Center of Carmel. Bayley, along with the show’s other two co-founders, John Leonard and John Pitz, were behind the addition of Fueliscious, a fundraising event that is held at the Lucas Estate the evening before Artomobilia. Bayley, an honorary board member of the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund, collaborated with the Leonard and Pitz to create a first-class event that was focused on more than just the extravagant vehicles but on seriously ill Hoosier children’s wishes.

Carmel_2017_March_LHBailey_v2.indd 2

“Fuelicious is about so much more than the cars and the enthusiasts,” Bayley emphasized. “It is about the kids, and who doesn’t have an affinity for helping Hoosier children, who are seriously ill, and their families?” Bayley’s list of awards and recognitions is long. A few of his most notable awards include, but not limited to: Stockbroker of the Year, 1985; Advisor Hall of Fame, 1993; Outstanding Advisor of the Year, 1995; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award, 2002; Association of Fundraising Professionals; Indiana Chapter Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, 2009; and Sagamore of the Wabash Award, 1994. The NYSE honored David A. Noyes in 2003 and 2008, when Bayley was invited to the “ringing of the bell” to commemorate the firm’s 95 years as a member and for the 100th anniversary and Bayley’s 50th anniversary with David A. Noyes. “It has been wonderful to live here in greater Indianapolis area,” Bayley said. “I started my philanthropic work with St. Vincent’s Hospital in the early 1990s. It was a call from God, and I served on that board for 12-13 years and as chairman for three of those years. I feel that it is important for our firm and our associates

to be involved in our community. All of our associates are involved in their own organizations and causes and the firm’s leadership supports those. However, if we can support them, we do. Being involved in our community enhances our lives. I found that in my volunteer life and my business life, which I enjoy very much, I am never done. There is always more work to do. You can be burned out, and I have avoided that burnout by my involvement with my philanthropic work.” Bayley reflected on his career, the development of the firm’s associates, and the succession plan with the addition of the Cooke brothers. “I’m very pleased to speak about the management of the firm,” he stated. “There have been many economic downfalls throughout the firm’s history, and it is due to the firm’s management style and

LH Bayley, and his lovely wife, Dianne, has been a personal and professional inspiration to our team at Artomobilia and Fuelicious since our first meeting in 2011 when he entered his Cadillac Eldorado… and went on to win that year. Since that time, his participation, commitment and guidance for our events is largely unmatched, and his personal friendship is a true blessing. He has an enviable charisma and passion for life that is absolutely infectious. And, I’m grateful to have LH as an advisor to our events, but moreover, consider him a friend and mentor.” - John Leonard Members of David A.Noyes Board: Left to right: Mark Damer, Chief Executive Officer, Chris Cooke, L.H. munication is essential to a successful advisor-client relationship. With the addition of the Cooke Financial Group, Bayley feels confident that the future of David A. Noyes, now 109 years old, is in good, competent hands. “These types of acquisitions put David A. Noyes in a good place,” Bayley said. “We are nimble, and we can make changes rapidly. We have the best talent within our firm with the acquisitions of the Cooke and Wolfrum groups and with Mark Damer’s leadership. He was meant to do this. I look for that quality in every member of our management team. Are they really meant for this? If they make a move here, how does that work for the firm’s family? “Chris and Brian Cooke bring their father, John Cooke’s, education and discipline. John Cooke was a great visionary. He built a terrific advisory-based business. David A. Noyes permits them greater growth in that we have several alternative investments. We’re not just about stocks and bonds but also hard assets-brick, mortar, dirt. We reduce the volatility of the portfolio that way. I am excited for the opportunity to grow further together in that area.”

I am not only investing in people’s portfolios but in their lives and their futures.” Bayley advised that the sooner young people begin investing in both liquid and hard assets, the better they will be. He recommended interviewing an advisor and finding one that can relate to what your goals are and that you enjoy working with. He emphasized that com-

Our Helping Hands Award winner for March is Susan Tracey. Susan and her husband Steven live in Carmel. She is retired from the IPS schools, where she noticed school children carrying duffel bags provided by the Assistance League of Indianapolis. The duffel bags contained uniforms, winter coats, hats, gloves, hygiene kits, and school supplies. She was always appreciative of the work the Assistance League did to support IPS students. After retiring, she naturally began volunteering her time with the Assistance League. One of their someone go to programs Facebook.com/Ranjputhranhelpinghands is called Operation School Bell. Social workers first screen and identify students who are in need of clothing and then Susan and other members are assigned a student with whom they shop to fill up the or ranjitputhran@allstate.com duffel bags with clothes and school supplies. Cycle City The city of Carmel continues to attract bicyclists to its bike-friendly roads and pathways. Since introducing a series of bike awareness and safety programs, ordinances, and organized rides, the number of bicycle accidents has steadily decreased, according to City Councilman Bruce Kimball, who is the founder of the local bicycle group Carmel Pedals. Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Oscar O. Hofmann

K

imball believes that those incidents are trending downward due to the combination of awareness efforts and the fact that bicycling is becoming more a part of the city’s culture. With 183.7 miles of multiuse pathways, the connectivity and ease of commuting by bike just keeps improving. He says the city is improving west Carmel and installing multi-use paths to better interconnect the city’s neighborhoods. They will make it easier to make connections to major pathways like the one from 106th in Zionsville to the White River and the east border of Carmel. Kimball recently announced the addition of some new bicycle-related events as well as the return of some popular ones. “Some of the things that we have planned for this year are three different rides, Safe Summer Cycling that we will be doing this summer to promote bicycle safety and awareness, especially during the summer months when the kids are

out of school,” Kimball shared. The “Ride, Dine, and Dance” event will be held on July 1st. “We will start the ride at 6:30 p.m., and it is intended to be a 25-mile ride, depending upon the participant’s level of fitness and then ride back to the Arts and Design District where there will be a band and street dance. Sun King is going to be one of our sponsors and the band will play until midnight. We hope that this eventually becomes one of the major rides in central Indiana,” he said. The dine and dance portion of the event will be open to everyone whether or not they participate in the ride. Kimball says that a portion of the proceeds will be used to sponsor more bicycle and safety events and another portion will benefit the Freewheelin’ organization, a nonprofit that uses bicycles to teach life skills, good health and leadership habits to children. “Children are able to earn a bike and learn basic bike mechanic skills and work with a mentor,” said Kimball.

“Pack a Sack” will be the theme of a 10-mile ride geared towards families and children shortly before school starts. “The participants will stop at four or five different places and pick up healthy foods to make up a sack lunch and learn about nutrition,” he said. Kimball said the “Ride a Bike-Borrow a Chair” program will return. “It’s designed to encourage biking to events such as the Gazebo concerts on Wednesday evenings, Jazz on the Monon concerts, and the festivals that go on in downtown Carmel. There will be bicycle corrals at the major festivals, and that may include the annual Greek Festival. The idea is that people who live farther away could park a mile or two from the event and then bike to the event and have a place to park their bikes.” He is also working on “Helmet Thursdays” that he hopes to launch in May. This program will work with local restaurants so that bicyclists with their helmets who

go to a participating restaurant will receive a discount. Kimball hopes this will develop into a county-wide initiative. Kimball has already ordered his new “Ebike” or electronic bike. “We’re getting ready to see these bikes hit the local markets,” Kimball said. “There are pedal models that you have to pedal, but once you reach a certain resistance, the motor kicks in and assists the cyclist. They are ideal for commuters because you can go along at a good stride and not break a sweat. You won’t have to re-dress upon reaching the office. They’re already big in Europe and Asia and they will soon be coming to Carmel and the local areas. I can’t wait until mine arrives. I will be riding to my council meetings and other engagements where I need to wear a suit and tie. Though, I won’t be giving up my regular bicycle anytime soon.”

Carmel resident Lee Ann McKey, owner of e-Boom Bikes in Zionsville, said that there are two types of eBikes. One is available with a throttle and one operates with pedals. “There are many different styles of these bikes,” McKey said. “There are different types of wattage. The lowest available is 250 watts up to 750 watts. There are governors installed on the eBikes in the U.S. and so the maximum speed is 20 mph. A starting price for these bikes is $1,500, $2,500 for a median, and they can go up to $10,000 for the serious commuter.” She said that ebikes don’t need any regular maintenance. “You just need to charge the battery when it is low. Most eBikes can go about 40 miles before recharging the battery,” she says. For more information about the upcoming bicycle rides in Carmel visit: www.carmel.in.gov.

Welcome to our

home improvement special With the unbelievably warm weather the Indianapolis area enjoyed at the end of February, we can’t help but tempt fate and begin to think that maybe spring is coming soon. Whether this unseasonably warm weather continues or old man winter gives us one more shot, the calendar does tell us that spring is, thankfully, just around the corner. Therefore, now is time to plan those spring projects that you have been thinking about all winter. CARMEL MONTHLY

Start with a Plan Before you start any projects to enhance the curb appeal of your home or expand your outdoor living area, the pros at Noll Landscaping suggest that you formulate a plan. Among the things to consider in developing a plan is to critically examine your existing trees and foliage. Ask yourself if the existing plants enhance or detract from your house, and if can they be trimmed, pruned, or need

replacing? The answers will go a long way in determining whether you have a DIY project or you need to bring in professional assistance. Whether it’s a DIY project or you hire a professional to do all or a part of the project, Noll Landscaping also suggests that the landscaping plan include using timeless materials, that it have a point of interest or enjoyment, and that it incorporate materials that will provide yearround color. Don’t forget that adding outdoor lighting not only increases the beauty of the home but also its security. Dan Weingart of Green Image Landscape indicated that it’s important to develop a sense of what your goals are and

incorporate those in your DIY plan or share them with your professional landscaper. For example, are you an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys yard work, or are you looking for something low maintenance? You should also consider the location from which you plan to enjoy the area. Where will you be sitting when you will be taking advantage of the view? Dan also said it’s helpful if you do a bit of homework to get a sense of what you like and do not like. Sharing your likes and dislikes can save you and your landscaper a great deal of time and money. Dan points to the innumerable websites and design magazines sources to use to get a sense of what works for you.

Do I need a Professional Provided you have the time and desire, there are many things such as spreading mulch, cleaning out beds of leaves and debris, and pulling weeds that many of us can do without the help from a professional landscaper. However, if you’re planning on doing anything beyond these maintenance projects, you may want to bring in a professional. In particular, if the project includes building any new structures, you probably want to consult a professional who knows and understands the regulatory, permitting and homeowners association issues that could play havoc with your plans. If you expect to have any permitting issues, address them in the planning stage, advises Dan Weigart.

In choosing a professional, Catherine Simpkins of Green Lawn by Design understands that finding the right lawn and landscape professional can feel overwhelming. However, Simpkins advises, “The good news is that it doesn’t have to be difficult if you know what questions to ask.” The questions that Simpkins recommends asking are: • Do they have a great reputation? • Are they up on the latest technologies? • Do they have proper credentials? According to Simpkins, a professional lawn care provider is required by law to have proper licensing and certification to apply any chemicals used on your lawn. Simpkins also emphasized that as an added service they focus on helping potential clients through educating them on traditional lawn care, organic treatments, and setting proper expectations. This may be something you look for in hiring your professional.

Unlike concrete or epoxy-painted concrete finishes, the texture of a Rubaroc™ surface makes it slip-resistant. Because it is air and water permeable, it is also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Quite simply, water does not puddle on a Rubaroc™ surface because the water can move through it. While the Rubaroc™ surface has a number of physical attributes that make it superior to plain concrete, it can be also very attractive. Do you have an old pool deck with cracked concrete? Meet some of the Comedians

JOHN LANGHAM, 61 CARMEL Langham is a local business owner who originally bought the class as a gift for a friend who was turning 60 and then his friend talked him into taking the class. “I thought it would be fun to do something outside of my normal comfort zone,” he said. Langham hopes to one day headline here in Carmel at the Palladium.

Laugh

The art of making people

Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Andrew Grodner and JJ Kaplan

We could all use a good laugh nowadays. With politics dominating television, radio, and internet, comedy continues to lift spirits and bring people together. Would you dare to stand in front of your peers and strangers and attempt to make them laugh, on cue?

T

he Center for the Performing Arts recently added to their portfolio of programs an Intro to Stand-Up Comedy class, and we interviewed a few willing participants on what motivated them to try their hands at comedy. Instructing the class is professional comedian Mat Alano-Martin, who comes to comedy from the world of rock and roll. With a comedic style that bridges the social and political views of his indie-rock background with the attitude and sensibilities of his rural and blue collar youth, Alano-Martin has appeared at comedy clubs, theaters, punk rock dives, redneck roadhouses, casinos, colleges, living rooms and everywhere in between.

Alano-Martin has taught this class in Bloomington and finds the chance to teach it at the Center for the Performing Arts an exciting opportunity. “This class as originally designed as part of the partnership between Limestone Comedy Festival, of which I am the co-director, and Ivy Tech Bloomington,” he said. “Julia Shildmyer-Heighway reached out to me about bringing the course to the Center as part of their community arts programming. As far as the importance of the class, I think it serves as a safe place for people who might be looking at doing stand-up as a bucket list item or for those who just want to try it. The classroom setting gives them the opportunity to write and perform stand-up in a supportive environment.”

LIZ PRUGH, 29 INDIANAPOLIS Prugh is a marketing consultant and the co-founder of PureFandom.com. The class registration was a gift from her husband and was on her “bucket list” of things to do. Her biggest worry is not getting someone to laugh at her jokes. When asked where she would one day like to perform, she replied, “I’d love to host an awards show. The Emmy’s, Golden Globes, Oscars – whichever will have me.”

LANCE ANGUS, 48 CARMEL Angus works as a service dispatcher at Indianapolis Power & Light Company and said he has always enjoyed the “craft” and different styles of comedy, so he wanted to learn more about it. His biggest challenge that he hopes to overcome in the class is the anxiety of being in front of strangers. “Life goes by too quick to take it seriously. Hopefully, I can help other people laugh, too.” Angus would love to be able to perform one day at The Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles.

The culmination of the class occurs on March 10th when the participants take the stage for a public performance at the Studio Theater at 7:30pm. www.thecenterfortheperformingarts.org

ROBERT HEIGHWAY, 53 CASTLETON AREA “I build pipe organs for a living,” Heighway said. “I have always enjoyed good, intelligent humor. I hope to conquer the fear of telling the jokes that I have written. Laughter makes the journey of life easier,” he said.

STEVEN M. KIRSH, 63 CARMEL Kirsh is an adoption attorney by day and is interested in this class so that he can develop a routine for his son’s rehearsal dinner before his upcoming wedding. When asked why he believes that laughter is important, he replied, “Laughter is very disarming. It makes strangers feel comfortable and at ease. If given the opportunity to perform on any stage, I would choose the Palladium.”

BILL ECKERT, 70 CARMEL Eckert is retired and works part-time at the Center for the Performing Arts. “I’m taking the class because my wife says that I’m not funny, but I am,” Eckert professed. “There are no fears that I hope to conquer in this class; mine are beyond conquest.” If given the opportunity, Eckert would perform at Carnegie Hall.

PATRICK J. CROWLEY, 62 INDIANAPOLIS Crowley is the General Manager of Patterson Dental Supply. He says his wife encouraged him to take the class. He hopes to gain confidence in being able to write good jokes and improve his presentation skills. Crowley said. “If I could headline anywhere, I would like to perform at Caesar’s Palace.”

MIKE SHANLEY, 57 FISHERS Shauley is a sales representative for a manufacturing company. He had a friend who did comedy a long time ago, and he thought that taking this class would be fun. Shauley hopes to conquer the fear of not being able to make people laugh. He has been inspired by Ron White, Jim Gaffigan, and Jerry Seinfeld.

WENDY VOLKMAR, 51 CARMEL Volkmar is an artist and housewife. Both she and her husband, Karl, are taking the class together. “My only concern was that he was going to skip out because of the public speaking part of it,” Volkmar said. Her “dream stage” would be to perform right here in Carmel at the Palladium.

Danu: An Evening of Celtic Music

For over two decades Danú’s virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English) have delighted audiences worldwide. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, Danú takes its audiences on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience.

Four-time Grammy-nominated Anoushka Shankar, “one of the greatest sitar players in the world” (Rolling Stone), presents Home: a pure Indian classical album and program that showcases the meditative and virtuosic qualities of the Indian raga. Home is a paradigm of this genre, exemplifying the unique dichotomy between the ancient structure and inthe-moment improvisations.
