St. Petersburg is Europe’s forgotten historical gem St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter I as a fortress, shipyard and port on the Baltic Sea shore that he had just conquered. In less than 10 years his newly-built city grew rapidly and became the capital of the Russian Empire for the next two centuries. Until 1917, St. Petersburg was Russia’s main political and cultural center, and with its population of 2 million people and an immense concentration of wealth, it was Europe’s second most important city, topped only by London.

Famous architects - Trezzini, Rossi, Rastrelli, Bazhenov, and many others - built splendid palaces for the Imperial family and the aristocrats, as well as graceful city squares and splendid architectural ensembles. To this day, most retain their original form and plan. St. Petersburgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history is marked by inspiring triumphs and horrible tragedy. The city experienced three devastating floods, three revolutions, Stalinist repression, and a 900-day siege during World War II. Many famous and outstanding people were born, lived and worked in St. Petersburg. In its three centuries the city has changed its name three times: St. Petersburg, Petrograd, Leningrad, and then back again to St. Petersburg.

ExpoForum â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new conference arena From 2013 St. Petersburg will become an ideal destination for international congresses and trade fairs. By then the super modern convention and exhibition centre will be completed in the city of Peter the Great. The new facilities of ExpoForum meet all requirements to becoming a leading convention venue in the world.

Innovative and creative concept The idea behind the new trade fair and congress palace is to create a complete infrastructure for any kind of event integrated in one single location. Even a three- and a four-star hotels with a total of 450 rooms as well as a business centre, restaurants and cafes will be included in the complex. Due to its excellent concept, the ExpoForum has been already accepted as a member of the prestigious association of AIPC (International Association of Congress Centres) even before its opening. In 2010 ExpoForum also was certified according to the management quality system ISO 9001:2008.

The best location in the city ExpoForum will be located a 10-minute drive from Pulkovo international airport, which will be reconstructed and expanded with international partners. The airport will become a major hub in international travel.

Hotels in the surroundings Along with the two hotels on-site, ExpoForum’s guests have a wide range of the accommodation nearby. The construction of new hotels over the next several years has been a major priority for the city government, and this brings its own rewards. The number of hotel rooms in the city has recently been increasing 5 percent annually. Within a radius of 10 kilometers, five modern business hotels will provide additional 2,300 rooms from comfortable to luxurious standard. More new hotels are going to be built around the airport so they will be able to host the Expoforum’s guests.By 2010 there are more than 600 hotels with 27 000 rooms in St. Petersburg.
