SESSION THEME

“Bridging the divide between me & Europe, Europe & I”, the 10th National Session of the European Youth Parliament (EYP) Sweden, will be the final step of the national selection process, consisting of four Regional Sessions across the country and one National Session in Gothenburg. Altogether they will cover a combined period of 16 days and involve over 300 youths from 60 schools. During each session delegates will debate, trade ideas and exchange viewpoints with each other, national politicians and policy makers on a number of current European political issues. “Bridging the divide between me & Europe, Europe & I” aims to raise awareness of European issues, while encouraging an active European citizenship, intercultural practices amongst young people, and a constructive dialogue between the youth of today and the policy makers who are building Europe for them. A dialogue between the participants of the session and these decisionmakers puts these questions, and the influence of the youth, higher on the political agenda. The issues the delegates will be dealing will focus on an array of topics, such as the crisis and grave human rights violations in Syria, the authoritarian regime and controversial assertion of Putin’s Russia, as well as Germany’s position in the EU after their national elections. Other current affairs which will be discussed include unemployment, the environment, human rights and social inclusion. By creating a more efficient dialogue between these policy makers and youth, the fresh and innovative ideas of the youth can be made a reality, and it is the hope that this sense of being heard will encourage a continued involvement in the European society.

NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear reader,

If you’re reading this because you have been chosen to attend the session: congratulations! If you are just interested in the event, well done – because the European Youth Parliament is a very special project. Through our events we are able to inspire, engage, and nonformally educate over 20.000 youngsters a year all over the continent of Europe. The 10th National Session of the European Youth Parliament Sweden will be held with a similar idea: the session in Götenburg will bring together Swedish youngsters to discuss eight wide-ranging topics under the theme of “Bridging the divide between Me & Europe, Europe & I”. We aim at bringing all participating youngsters together to get them thinking about the EU, and get closer to something that might seem very far away from us, but in fact, couldn’t be closer: take the European elections coming up this spring, the economic crisis that is still lingering around Europe, youth unemployment. All of these topics are so very much connected to Europe, the EU, and European decision-making. And just like any other group, Europe’s youth deserves a say in the direction we are taking with each of these topics, and many more. Unfortunately, most of us cannot vote (yet), and are not in influential positions (yet), but that does not mean we don’t deserve a say. To make informed decisions, we will start looking in-depth at eight topics during the session, which hopefully will get everyone excited to get more into European politics. I hope you will join me and all the chairpersons, journalists and organisers present at the session to try to get change starting, make this a few unforgettable days and an experience you will never forget. Yours sincerely,

Zahra Runderkamp President of the Session www.gothenburg14.com

note from the head organisers

Dear delegates,

We hope that you, upon reading this, feel your pulse start to race and your palms begin to sweat; the excitement that we have all felt at the prospect of an EYP session will soon creep up once again. The 10th National Session of EYP Sweden will be your second EYP step, and the final one before you enter international waters. It is indeed a reason for excitement, not least from our side. The session was officially born on the 22nd of April this year, when we received what at first looked like a very ordinary email. All changed when we realised that this was more or less the EYP equivalent of a Hogwarts acceptance letter.

The story of how the session took shape will have to wait for another time, likely when we meet again in some distant part of Europe, once again convening to do what we do best: influence our societies. This is perhaps particularly important for this session, which is organised under the theme “Bridging the divide between Me & Europe, Europe & I”. Our aim is to encourage and enable you to become active in regional, national and European spheres, and to inform and prepare you to the greatest possible extent in time for the European elections next year. Remember that your contribution, big or small, matters. The EYP welcomes all, and so take the opportunity to make your voice heard. With this said, on behalf of the organising committee, we wish you a very warm welcome to the 10th National Session of EYP Sweden! Yours sincerely,

Maya Moss Head Organiser

Photo: Wikipedia

The Gothenburg City Hall was originally designed as a mercantile exchange, with a majestic ballroom in the Neoclassical style of the time. It is known as “the building of Gothenburg” and stands on Gustav Adolfs square, the city’s political centre since the 1600s; where better to hold our General Assembly.
