ulticolored opals are one of the most unusual gems found in nature, containing anywhere from 4% to 20% water! Because of that water content, opals are delicate and must never be stored in a dry environment. Their unusual fire, called “play-of-color” is caused by microscopic spheres of silica interacting with light. Opals are created by rain and sedimentation over millions of years and they can form in all manner of places – even in seashells and fossilized wood. The finest opals come from Australia; the famed Lightning Ridge black opals bringing in hefty premiums. Australia has been the main source of all fine opal for many years. Mexico is a more recent source, producing yellow, orange, and cherry-red gems commonly called fire opals. The many varieties of opal have myriad names almost as colorful as they are! The term “harlequin” is used to describe opals with broad “brush strokes” of color, which are highly sought after. Opals with small closely set points of color are called “pinfire” opals. A “peacock” opal is one that has mostly blue and green fire. “Boulders” are opals that run in veins too thin to cut independently from the host rock, and the resulting gems can have a beautiful patchwork effect.
