MUSIK Journal about education, muic & perserverance

Letter To The Editor "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." - Winston Churchill

Dear Editor: I am currently enrolled in an Entertainment Journalism class at Saint Edward’s University. My professor has tasked the students with producing an eportfolio of our work we’ve completed this semester. The works assigned fit under an umbrella of one topic we were most interested in; my topic was choral music that branches into music education. Some of the works included focus on the responsibility of role models, stress relieving techniques, and cultural personas influenced by keeping Austin weird. I hope people will take the time to recognize the contributions artists, composers, and lyricists have made to society through the history of good communication and encouraging others through testimony of success or word of mouth. Thank you for taking time to read this letter. I'm proud to explore ways to bring music into the field of education as a tool for success.

SING FROM THE HEART

A CAPPELLA TEXAS MEN’S CHORUS MUSIC REVIEW

A Capella has been around since the 19th century. The common quartet choral performance seen in front of the town’s one and only barbershop would resonate song and dance throughout the town as people went about their day. This enthusiastic gesture was seen as advertisement and entertainment as the singers would boldly portray their skills of performance and harmonic tunes to the beat of the townsfolk. Barbershop tunes were easy to pick up, and with the right amount of people in a set pitch, the music they would make melted their audiences hearts. Quartets and choral groups began to upgrade to competitions and larger performance groups as the decades past.

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 6

The A Cappella Texas Men’s Chorus support each other with motivational speeches, repetitive rehearsals, and flash cards. The group accepts any age of performer and have a welcoming spirit to anyone with any kind of singing ability. Unlike some A Cappella groups, they have auditions to place each individual singer in their ideal position in the group so when their voices resonate, the sound emits unity and balance.

Why A Cappella? A Cappella Texas performs with a harmonious answer - music comes from the heart, so what better way to present it to others besides singing.

From segregation laws of the past to same sex marriage laws of the present to nuclear war technology in the future, these men sing to tell the history of the world and the hope of future generations as the world evolves to a new species. With the background noise of snapping fingers and squeaky risers, these men take their personal experiences and mutual feelings, and marinate them into each song they sing. The joy of singing reflects in those who are listening, which encourages their audience to join along or become emotionally attached. Their purpose is to make the world smile and bring music to those who cannot get it for their own. They have accomplished that, and will accomplish more with their upcoming performances this year.

". . . music comes from the heart, so what better way to present it to others besides singing." - Austin Girls Choir Director, Sara Burden-McClure

EDUCATION

Hope Prevails

Local music teacher teaching Austin's young talent the importance of education.

Sara is a parent herself so she understands how important it can be to raise a child right, village or not. Her passion for music education and girls education influenced me personally to share her story. The Austin Girls Education was founded in 1990 because of the need of a organization for those who attended the boys choir rehearsals nightly. The demands of these girls with the support of their parents to promote the idea of a girls choir ignited the success of this organization. This educational non-profit organization provides classes, rehearsals, and performances to girls from the age 8 to 18. The mission of the AGC is to provide opportunities for musically talented girls to perform a wide range of music in Austin and around the globe. Sara did not think that the continuation or growth of the AGC would occur, but was more than prepared with the help and support of the parents of the girls who worked hard to motivate her to start this organization - the Austin Girls Choir. She found joy in the success and enthusiasm of her students as they practiced her teachings and she mentored their skills to perfect unity. However, there are always bad things that can occur when good things are present, thus driving the truth behind this storybook tale.

Nowadays, the instance of seeing an all boys choir or a few boy sopranos is utopia. However, back in the 90s, it was utopia to find a choir of any kind singing at the right pitch. To think that this woman took the chance to follow the dreams and desires of a handful of young girls who had no idea of how it would progress, and created a popular international singing group, is an anthem for women to be more confident in themselves as well as their ability. How far will you go to grasp that what is dear to your heart?

Sara Burden-McClure is one of the directors of the Austin Girls Choir and founded this organization in 1990. At the time, she was pursuing a degree in a different field of work that didn’t focus on music education. Hope is the constant theme you will see throughout this piece. Her hope to create an environment that promotes girls music education and provide building blocks to survive a biased society is a commendable request.

The Austin Girls Choir is an institution for girls between the age of 8 and 18. The mission of the Austin Girls Choir is to provide an environment for young women to perfect their skills in musical arts and perform for their community, and now, the globe. To enroll into this institution, Susan created a hierarchical interview convention that ensures the well-being of the two most important parties - the prospective student and the parent(s).

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 8

PORTFOLIO PROFILE

1

The first interview involves her speaking with the parent(s) who are interested in enrolling their child into the school. It’s good to make sure that you and the people involved understand what the purpose of the organization is so there will be no wasted time or efforts. It’s harsh to think that someone would believe such an institution would be nothing short of success, but I digress. Once Sara and the parent(s) meet on equal terms and understand the policy and requirements as the parent of the child - get them to and from the institution and performances.

2

The second interview allows Sara to speak with the child or children who are “interested” in the program. It’s safe to say that all parents want the best for their children, and an all girls choir does not sound like the extracurricular activity a young girl would willingly contest to, unless she was exposed to musical arts at a young age. Once formalities are done, the girls are tested to see what level of singing they are at, and if they would be a good fit for the Austin Girls Choir. The process is similar to that of a graduate applying for grad school or a high graduate applying to private school, but this interview process has been fine-tuned to be set up to this way due to the many issues it took for Sara to bring the Austin Girls Choir this far.

3

Last, but not least, Sara personally ask the girls why they want to be in the choir. The highlight of this part of her story reflects her warm personality, strong work ethic, and considerate demeanor. If the child does not have an interest in the program and/or is unsure about their skill or ability to participate in the institution, then she brings the interview full circle to talk about other options or if the institute is really something she really wants to do.

It makes all the difference when students see that you actually give a damn about them.”

The Austin Girls Choir was a roller coaster of excitement as Sara took me from sitting in her car crunching in last minute assignments for tough UT professors to the starlight of the organization. The AGC first performed at a community building for the elderly, and had no idea that their voices would ring in the ears and hearts of their listeners. So much that they were invited to sing at the Governor’s mansion. To imagine how they felt walking past the crisp white pillars into the grand hall of the foyer, admiring the art on the gold trim walls and newly shined stained stone floors, and meeting Governor Ann Richards just before their performance. A mouth gaping, awe inspiring flashback that not many people can account for, especially a local all girls choir in the heart of Texas. “Governor Ann Richards thought highly of girls music and education, and wanted to promote as much. We sang at the Texas Governor’s Mansion on many occasions.”

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 9

PROFILE

Governor Ann Richards became the 45th Governor of Texas in January of 1991. She originally was the second woman to hold Texas’s top office position, but in her own right, was seen as the first woman governor of Texas since Miriam “Ma” Ferguson obtained the office having being a proxy for impeached governor James E. “Pa” Ferguson, her husband. The Richards family delve into many organizations and communities to promote women's health and education. For example, her daughter, Cecile Richards became president of Planned Parenthood in 2006, as Ann Richards demonstrated interest in social issues such as abortion, women’s rights, and equality. In her death, she left behind a legacy, The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders who supports organizations like the Austin Girls Choir to promote girls education.

Sara is passionate about her work and believes education to be an important factor in everyone’s life. Her mission is to offer these girls encouragement and leadership skills through music and self application, while building the foundation to establish an all girls choir school. She is currently working to get a charter and looking for ways to inform the community about her aspirations and how the community would benefit from its establishment. It will be a place where students can get the attention they need.

“I’m pretty damn good at what I do, and if I can’t get her [ a student ] to sing a pitch, then it might not be able to be done.”

New Way To Kill Snakes PERSONAL ESSAY

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 12

Arriving to the Long Center for the Performing Arts was not a big deal until we arrived on the stage in preparation for the concert. Inhaling the sounds, sights, and smells of the bold architecture and intricate design of the theatre nearly knocked my socks off stockings, per se. To think that we were given the opportunity to sing the movie score of 2007 Gold Award Killing Snakes with successful musicians who focus their music on Westerns and cultural bending formalities. Imagine performing with your favorite singer and/or songwriter who was a co-writer in an awardwinning film production.

You don’t only get to sing with them, but you get to spend a full 10-hour work day with them. From sound check, to costume prep, and then to performance. One of the more exciting times during this stressful day was speaking with the artists themselves - Texas natives who portray the very heart of Texas and the meaning of hospitality. The smell of a newly purchased car rang in my head as I took a seat in the Alto section with my colleagues. Their jaws were as gaped as mine as I examined the theatre's stadium set rows of seats and overwhelming sound system, so escalated that you could hear the slightest whisper.

PERSONAL ESSAY

This is how I met the musicians in Del Castillo. It ranks high in the “Most Embarrassing Moments… ” category. After complementing their features and talent blatantly under one of the mics during mic check - whispering in a pin drop quiet room - they invited me over for some heart-to-heart. Hailing from Brownsville and growing up in an environment of musical talent, Danny performed for many festivals and concerts nationwide and is currently working with his friend and sister on a new album. His personality was the brightest out of the rest as he was willing to speak with me and my colleagues. Of course his charming features with his sparkling eyes are a distraction for most fans, as his persona reflects his joy in the collaboration of musicians and performers. He prides himself in creating friendships to promote music education.

Alex is the singer of Del Castillo, so of course EVERYONE adored him, his voice, and appreciated his personality. Alex was no short of fun and welcoming as he invited the Austin Community Choir, Saint Edward’s University Choir, and Austin Civic Orchestra to mingle. His passion for music education for all ages was like electricity that ran through his long suave locks, down to his shoulders and throughout his body, even to the very heart of his soul. He had a way of encouraging his fellow musicians and performers to follow a path of self-respect instead of pursuing fame and fortune. Mark has been playing guitar with Del Castillo ever since because music rings in his heart, soul, and mind, and this Spanish style music will always live in him.

He has an introvert persona, but this does not mean he is short of being fun. His passion for music encourages you to try it out and make it a personal passion or hobby, even going as far as offering guitar lessons and videos he has published on YouTube and his own website. Selfies were the highlight of his response to the Austin Community Choir and Saint Edward’s Chamber Singers as we overwhelmed our Facebook pages with him and the band’s smiling faces. Hailing from a Rock n Roll background, scoring through the Blues world for a time, and then diving into the multi-award winning Latin Rock band Del Castillo to creating a hybrid sound of Classical meets Spaghetti Western, Rick is always taking leaps into different realms - risk taker - especially when he decided to encounter an invitation to a bunch of college girls wooing over his deep voice and husky stature. His hearty laugh and welcoming voice will have you relaxed and talking to him for hours on end. His passion is in children’s education, and natural talent in the performing arts, saying that every child deserves a chance to shine. I did not realize it, but I had met Jason before he became a renowned guitar player in Del Castillo. He is the Associate Choir Director at Shoemaker High School in Killeen. I attended Copperas High School when he first started there and remembered collaborating with their choir, band, AND football team - as they say, small world. The environment consisted of a bunch of college students pursuing their passion and fulfilling their dreams as musicians and performers, similar to when he first started working with high school students for the first time but on a higher level, he says. It was a “LinkedIn” experience as everyone was making subconscious connections with everyone around them, as you never know when you might see them again and/or need their advice. Another guitarist prodigy at a young age, who instantly knew what he wanted to do upon graduating high school as he headed for the road - Jimmy. He did not look like your typical bass guitarist - long hair, wicked tattoos, and rough voice - but his personality gave off a similar persona.

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 13

His young age age caught us off guard at first, because we couldn’t believe he had got so far in life and traveled as much as he has at such a young age. He has a passion for bass players specifically, but it’s all about the music and how it reaches others, which was the goal of the musicians and performers who attended the premiere that day. It was encouraging to see someone in our age group being successful and being able to much as he has done within the past few years. Cecilio laughed at the comment of being a big teddy bear as he admitted to being a bit intimidating at first glance and even unapproachable. His bubbly personality melts the wall between social norms and creates a platform on which everyone he interacts with is on the same plane.

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 14

He believes it’s important to have a connection with those you meet on occasion because you never know when you might see them again. Each of the band members were joy to meet and greet with as they left a wonderful lasting impression that had me following them on any and every social media just before we had to get dressed for th performance, which was the icing on the cake.

Killing Snakes is a Cannes Film Selection and winner of the audience award for Best Film at the McAllen Film Festival. This narrative focuses on two childhood friends who travel to Spain and get wrapped up in the drug world of an obsessive polo-playing kingpin. From Spain to the Southwest, the friends fight for fame, fortune, and the one thing that’s most unattainable - a girl. In polo, the term “killing snakes” refers to a bunch of players hacking at the ball. The film was cowritten by Rick del Castillo and Martina Amende, and the music played an important role in the creation of the film.

Now that we’ve met the band. What exactly is this movie genre they have played for for a number of years? Spaghetti Western, or Macaroni Western is a broad subcategory of Western films that emerged in the mid-1960s in the age of Sergio Leone’s film-making style and international box-office success. The term was used by American critics and others because most of these Westerns were directed and produced by Italians.

The Saint Edward’s University University Choir directed by Dr. Stevens received the opportunity to sing with the Austin Civic Orchestra, the Austin Community Choir, and Rick del Castillo. Del Castillo is an exotic bundle of mezzo soprano vocal and Spanish flavor orchestra. The music flows from the top of your head, to the soles of your feet, stirring emotions that can only be reached by such methods - music. The 1960s and 1970s were the highlights of their career, where fame and fortune began to accumulate. A Fistful of Dollars and The Magnificent Seven are two of the most recent successes they have composed and conducted into the Spaghetti Western category.

The experience was magnificent as I became a movie star for a day, without the anal makeup artist and cynical movie director. The environment was the opposite of the agenda as we were pushed through repetitive concert runs and pitch critiques until we were essentially, well you know, perfect. Del Castillo lighted the mood as their music change the hearts of those around and initiated the blending of the musicians and performers. Austin Community Choir were willing to assist with any sight reading and Del Castillo were willing to lift your spirits if you felt left out or overwhelmed.

PLAYLIST

TOP SEVEN SONGS TO BOOST YOUR SELF-ESTEEM Life can sometimes prove to be downright cruel. So turn down the negative vibes and turn up this playlist that is sure to get you back into shape! 7. Remember The Name - Fort Minor This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill Fifteen percent concentrated power of will Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!” “

If you know you are doing your best at your job or at school, and can’t seem to get over feeling like you’re not doing enough, it’s important to remember that it takes trial and error - you can’t rush perfection. Meet up with a tutor or talk with your boss or mentor about ways you can improve, don’t give up hope just yet. Asking for assistance or help is not a bad thing, nor looked down upon, so feel free to take an initiative to ask for constructive criticism. This hip hop song is a straightforward message to DO YOU, and if anyone doesn’t like it, then they are just haters. Your deeds will shine and you will be recognized in due time if you stay determined. Once they know your name and acknowledge who you are, you will be able to overcome any obstacle, and be able to encourage others who happen to be stuck in the same situation as you. Every percent of your skill and ability counts.

6. Skyscraper - Demi Lovato You can take everything I have You can break everything I am Like I'm made of glass Like I'm made of paper Go on and try to tear me down I will be rising from the ground Like a skyscraper” “

Even when you think you have lost all that you believed was important to survive in this economic downturn with a waring society and a diverse community troubled with stereotypes. Sometimes we all have haters who are determined to see us fail at all cost, no matter what. It baffles even me to believe that some people make it an initiative to ruin other people’s hopes and dreams, degrading their passions. The way to deal with this person is to admit that they have won a few battles, but not the war. The tone of this song is for when you have no piece of sunshine to lean on as it’s slow tempo may even bring you to tears. You will prevail in the end and find ways to overcome even the most difficult task you encounter at work and/or school. Like a skyscraper. This is a wonderful metaphor that takes time to build and perfect. Time heals.

5. We Are The Champions - Queens And bad mistakes I've made a few I've had my share of sand Kicked in my face But I've come through” “

Everyone makes mistakes! Do not beat yourself up for make the same mistake over and over AND OVER AGAIN! It’s what you do to change the mistake or solve it for the better that counts. The world is full of up and downs, and there are haters no matter where you go or how much you do to please others. Focus on your well-being and excel in what you know best. Settling on the negative aspects of your life and work will bury you in low self-esteem and the debt of self-loathing. This song wants you to know that you will make it through whatever situation you are dealing with, and survive anywho who puts a pin in your day, making it stagnant or sour. It also has a rhythmic beat that helps you stomp on your haters. 4. Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful - Kellie Pickler I know you want to be just like your friend, But he'll still love you if you don't give in If those girls are being honest that have been where you're at, I bet they'd tell you that they wish they had their innocence back.” “

Everyone has a moment in which they imagine how their life would be if they were their colleague, family member, or friend, and often lose hope in their own ability. This is a country song that blends a little into the contemporary genre to meet a larger audience, aside from just young womenawaiting your spotlight.

It can be argued that the song only points toward women's self-esteem, but can be applied to everyone as it encourages people to be themselves. Show that you ARE someone, and you ARE somebody, not just another statistic sitting on the assembly line. .

3. It’s My Life - Bon Jovi Better stand tall when they're calling you out Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down” “

It’s all about you and what you strive to do. How you want to be perceived more than how others will perceive you. You know what you want to do in life and how you want to govern your lifestyle. You do not have to sacrifice your beliefs and values to please someone else. This song is an older song that points toward adults between 20 and 32, those who are pursuing their career and not conforming to the norm of most career-seekers who are following the “mold”. The “mold” being the journey from high school to college, to grad school, and then PhD or the corporate office. 2. Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson Thanks to you I got a new thing started Thanks to you I'm not a broken hearted Thanks to you I'm finally thinking bout me You know in the end the day to left was just my beginning In the end” “

ell, how about all the above? As many people may know, the world runs on coffee, not Dunkin’. As a matter of fact, Dunkin’ can not compare to the local celebrities of Austin, Texas. A cup of Joe can be hard to find if you prefer a certain taste, flavor, or texture. However, the real key to enjoying a smooth cup of coffee is an environment just as strong as your coffee. Let’s dive into the shops and bars who are known for their fantastic coffee and funky fresh environment and see how the relationship between music and drinks blends so perfectly. Music is the soul and heart of Austin, thus it’s only natural that almost every joint has an open mic night, or even weekend. The serenade of rockin’ melodies empowers Austin to, well, stay weird.

It’s quirky personality encourages its tenants to express themselves through music, art, and dance to influence or encourage those around them. Open Mic Night invites those talented individuals to do just that, and the people they meet are just as exciting as their performances. Making your way into a low lit scene can tickle your senses, but I’m pretty sure you won’t be shooting webs from your wrists or scaling walls to save a spot in line for the first espresso of the day. The baristas look just as radiant and welcoming as your cup of Joe as your teased by the goodies displayed before you, imploring you to explore the riches beheld. After you have obtained that which you seek, you sheathe your blade of determination and settle at your throne to observe your horizon as you await the festivities of the day or evening at the venue you selected.

Along comes a beautiful maiden, distraught with fatigue and in dire need of a boost as she fumbles through her purse and pockets to find enough riches for her purchase and a tip. This is the “Gotta-GetGoing Morning’ Bite” individual. It’s them against the world as they try to make their way from the cashier to the counter and back to their car while they pray they make it to work on time without spilling a drop of their morning remedy.

A light chuckle may escape your lips as you are reminded of being in the same position. Her frustration tries to penetrate the very soul of the barista, but they just patiently wait and even offer assistance as they work to put a smile on their customers faces, no matter the situation. Feeling flustered, an older man assist the woman with a smile and holds her kolache for her as she frantically pays the barista, grabs her cappuccino and rushes out the door. The “Relaxin’ & Havin’-Coffee-AllDay” individual has saved the day as he flirts a bit with the barista while ordering. He knows that this is only the morning crew - the hardest group of customers in any business - and takes the time to appreciate her hard word and efforts.

After leaving a hefty tip, he graces the barista with a wink and takes his seat to prepare his morning meal while he awaits his good ole’ cup of Joe. Nodding to a quick group of young folks, he’s greeted with a bundle of morning greetings as they bunch into the line in melodic harmony. The “Early-For-Coffee-And-ToClass” crowd may be seen as just as patient as the elder man before them, but they have an ere of determination in their eyes as they laugh and speak amongst themselves. The day is still young and so are they, making their way up the line as they grab a protein shake, a bagel or kolache, with the addition of an espresso shot or two.

The barista asks: “Do you want that dirty, filthy or disgusting?” With a hoot and a hollar, one boy from the lively bunch answers with a sly grin, “How about all the above with a shot of you?” The entire line couldn’t compose themselves as they laughed at the response. The environment lightens and the ere of frustration that dared to taint the lovely environment had dissipated. The barista made her way throughout the day and was quite overjoyed with today’s revenues and customer satisfaction. Arriving to the evening, and ordering a pizza for three as you return for an evening with friends, you recognize a few new faces with the old.

RHYTHMUS DER GESCHICHTE MAGAZINE | 21

The frustrated woman had returned with a friend at her hip, and the older man had returned with a family. It was time for another busy line of events, but the air seemed to hum with warm and soothing melody compared to the rockin’ beats of that morning. The stage was cleared and the first performer was speaking with the manager while everyone ordered their beverages and entrees for the evening event - open mic night. From guitar players to vocalist to comedians and then ventriloquist, all are welcome and all are invited to express their knowledge, talent, and skills to those just like them. Austin artists have a personality that invites you to talk with them and ask about their accomplishments and sometimes failures to encourage you to follow a path you believe in and pursue your hopes and dreams. Life happens and it can be hard at times, but the tunes of Austin says that the grass is always greener on the other side. It may sound like a quote from a love story or a zombie apocalypse film, but it supports the essence of Austin. Even though there are different characters that build the foundation of Austin’s personality, when the masterpiece is complete, we are all one and the same. The frustrated woman can share her love of music with the elder man as Roger Sellers hypnotizes them with his melodic drumming and vocals. The Digital Wild will speak on the need for unity and the great influence a funky fresh environment, like a local Austin coffee shop, will have on the community.

These characters are Austin’s own, and pride themselves in spreading the word about unity, encouraging others to express themselves through music, art, and dance, and keeping Austin weird. What more could you want then music, coffee, and booze? The coffee shops of Austin have just that and sometimes more if you’re driving down 1st Street or cruising down Congress Avenue. If you are looking for friendly folks, nice bites, and kick ass coffee, visit some local coffee shops of Austin, like Kick Butt Coffee Music and Booze, Cactus Cafe, and the Elephant Room and experience the decoction of weird - Austin.

The barista asks: “Do you want that dirty, filthy or disgusting?” With a hoot and a hollar, one boy from the lively bunch answers with a sly grin, “How about all the above with a shot of you?”

Under the dim lit aura of discouragement, she focuses on arranging her life to a chart of faith, reaching depths that she thought impossible until just now. Sara Burden-McClure is the director of the Austin Girls’ Choir and the highlight of the project I will be presenting with this letter. With the encouragement of her grateful students and support of her faithful colleagues, she calls to arms the assistance of the Austin community to support girls music and education to teach young girls and women about the importance of leadership and being humble. Her current objective aims to shape the decoction of Austin and how it creates the future leaders of Texas. I am going to be informing people about the history of one of Austin’s first all girls choir and how the love of students for their encouraging music director led her to pursue an initiative to give back to her community. Her story may seem commonplace to others as it can become a repetitive story of struggle, turmoil, and retribution. It caters to the individuals who read Austin magazine for a sign of hope or who have an interest in learning about businesses working in the favor of the Austin community. This person of interest has dedicated her time and effort to providing young girls with education and music, ushering confidence and respect into the vocal lessons as she works to encourage young women to believe in themselves. This story delves into the timeline of the Austin Girls Choir who started from local community performances for the elderly to gracing the first female governor of Texas with their unique overtures on many an occasion.

To commence said research I will travel to the Austin Girls Choir establishment to get insight on the environment and personality of Ms. Burden-McClure and her students. Also, an interview will be scheduled at her most available time to dig deeper into her motivation and determination to set this organization off and how it has survived this far in this ever present economic downturn. Thereafter her interview, I will sit in for a few of her classes and rehearsals and spend time with her to see how her daily life is juggled so intricately.

ACADEMIC PORTFOLIO

If there is no time for me to sit in, I will visit the A Cappella Society to inquire about the performances the Austin Girls Choir did at the governor's house when Ann Richards was in office. A visit to the Munday Library at St. Edward's University will provide me with information on Ann Richards and her reasoning for taking a chance on the Austin Girls Choir and her passion for girls education and talent. I believe this piece will bring awareness to the Austin community about the importance of supporting locally-owned businesses who have moved to Austin for such opportunities. This will keep Austin weird as it thrives to encourage people to express themselves and exercise their right to be an American citizen as the constitution was established to allow. In the perspective of a woman, it can be encouraging to those who want to start their own business, but do not know where to start. I want to thank the literary agent for taking the time to review my query. If you desire any other writing samples, do not hesitate to contact me at lgrier@stedwards.edu. Sincerely,

PAY DAY PAY BACK SURVIVAL IN AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

BUDGET JEOPARDY NEWBORN TRACT OR FURRY PACT?

It will cost a middle-income couple just over $245,000 to raise a child born in 2013 to the age of 18 , according to newly released estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Apparently the USDA measures the cost of living in all living mammals, not just livestock - kids are animals. “That’s up $4,260, or almost 2%, from the year before,” CNN Money states. The figures are based on the cost of housing, food, transportation, clothing, health care, education, child care, and miscellaneous expenses, like haircuts and cellphones - college expenses are not included; which is constantly on the rise. The good news is that “overall costs have grown more slowly in recent years thanks to low inflation,” according to economist Mark Lino, who has written the annual report for the USDA since 1987. Since 2008, more families have had to deal with less as the country’s median income remains more than 8% below where it was before the recession, while child care and health care costs continue to climb faster than inflation. It will cost a middle-income couple just over $12,000 to raise a dog to the age of 14, according to Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff. Let’s look into the life of a child. The starting cost will begin with a $12,000 deposit to ensure that the child has something to defecate in, something to cry about, and something to cry with.

The overnight trips to care for the crying infant will be the last of your worries as you turn down the $40 baby monitor you found on Amazon that your friend, mother of 5 children, referred you to. People have different views, opinions, and decisions when it comes to children, as every child is different. Seeing the neighbor jog herself back into shape with her Louis Vuitton baby stroller can not compare to your Walmart stroller you ordered online so you didn’t have to hassle it into the husband’s truck and set up alone while he works the night shift. Putting sarcasm and jokes aside, it is a gift. A newborn brightens the lives of many and shows a glint of hope to those in need of a boost when it seems that the married life does not fit them. In Seattle, Britta Gidican and her boyfriend spend $1,380 each month on daycare for their 17-month-old son, just $20 less than they spend on their mortgage each month.

"When I was pregnant I knew daycare would be expensive," said Gidican, a public relations manager. "But I didn't expect to pay two mortgages."

Rising transportation and food costs are eating up a big chunk of family budgets. Gas prices have nearly doubled since 2004, according to the American Automobile Association. Meanwhile, food prices have increased more than 13% since 2008, according to the USDA, and make up the third biggest child-rearing expense in the agency's estimate.

A puppy has an instant effect of loving kindness that comes automatic when someone sees a picture or picks one up for a cuddle. The same effect occurs with infants but infants become toddlers and then teenagers - the cuteness stops at a certain degree. Not to say that dogs are better than children but there has to be a line drawn. The beginning price of a dog at any age can range from $10,000 to $12,000 depending on the age. For fairness we will have to being at an infant stage for both parties. Seeing that same neighbor with the Louis Vuitton stroller and dalmatian on a diamond-decked harness and leash is enough to make any person just gag at the thought of the bill on her social status. To think of how that Dalmatian feels being constantly blinded by the glinting jewels distracting him from the next fire hydrant he can urinate on or the next bystander he can cover in his saliva of charm.

This is the cost for a 50-pound dog that lives in the Midwest. It is not uncommon to see some of these numbers double or triple in places like New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas. Now granted most people do not end up spending $40,000 on their dog, but some spend a whole lot more. A dog with hip dysplasia or severe allergies can have significantly higher veterinary expenses and I routinely see people who spend over $2,000 on a single veterinary problem. Chances are your costs will be similar to those I incur, but even with the minimum required care, it is still over $13,000.00. On the flip side of the thousand-dollar puppy is the puppy that ends up in the shelter and needs a home or 'else.' There are some real diamonds in the 'ruff' to be found at the local animal shelter.

Remember the love for both are equal amounts and the appreciate of both are important before making any rational decisions to be involved with either subject. Budgeting before any

‘major’

purchase is essential in parenting and

adulthood, don’t be the one to add another child or pet to the adoption list. Be a pal and adopt a dog, take the time to become closer with your mate, and familiarize yourself with how a lifestyle would be when caring for a third party in your newlywed household.
