Interesting Diversity
Leonard Joel is happy to present our first Asian Works of Art catalogue for 2023, the auspicious year of the rabbit, containing a wide diversity of arts from Asia.
We begin the auction with a selection of Japanese works of art including rare Japanese studio ceramics from a number of private collections, including an exciting modernist work by Living National Treasure Kondo Yuzo (lot 244) from a private collection in Western Victoria, some rare ceramics made and decorated by celebrated female calligrapher and historical personality Rengetsu including a published and exhibited pair of tokkuri (lot 242), and an Imperial Japanese work by Seifu Yohei III and Meiji period painter Suzuki Kason (lot 235).
We then move on to the category of Southeast Asian works of art, beginning with a small but very fine collection of Indonesian kris knives and textiles assembled by the late Hugh O'Neill AO (1933-2022), a renowned Australian architect and professor of architecture. Mr O'Neill was instrumental in teaching multiple generations of Australian and Asian students of architecture about the principles and sociological context of Asian architecture. He lived and taught in Indonesia twice during his life, 1958 to 1960 and then in 1967 to 1968. For his role in fostering relations between Indonesia and Australia and his other varied achievements he was awarded the Order of Australia in 2013. This collection was purchased by him in Indonesia from local people while he lived there, and of particular interest is a Javanese 'singo barong' kris knife (lot 262).
In addition to the Hugh O'Neill collection, also part of the old Melbourne collection, and gracing our front cover is a large blue and white ‘Phoenix’ tail vase, with subtly carved surface and reverse blue and white painting of plum blossom (lot 350), we are also delighted to offer a large collection of Vietnamese ceramics and Chinese art collected in Vietnam by a collector who lived there in the 1980s. Of particular interest in this group is a very rare iron painted bowl in Chinese Song Dynasty style (lot 279).
We finish this sale with an interesting diversity of Chinese ceramics and works of art, beginning with the property of a local Melbourne collector, primarily consisting of early Chinese ceramics including funerary sculpture dating from the Han to the Tang. Of particular note for its rarity and beauty is a very large Han Dynasty sculpture of an ox (lot 304), replete with powerful yet beautiful modelling and facial details.
Also of note within the group of Ming and Qing ceramics from various vendors is a rare blue and white vase dating from the Yongle Period (lot 364), exemplifying the earliest Ming technique of heaping and piling cobalt for the decorative painting.
We hope you enjoy this selection of Asian Works of Art, and very much look forward to greeting you at the viewings.
