Decorative Arts

For my second auction standing in for my colleague Chiara Curcio while she attends to

including a wonderful Martin Brothers two-face jug (lot 80) and a Grand Tour

the joys of new motherhood, I am pleased to introduce a large offering representing the richness and diversity of the decorative arts. We offer here a range of fine and beautiful objects from private clients across Australia, micromosaic (lot 227) consigned from Brisbane private collections via our specialist there, Troy McKenzie. A particularly pleasing aspect of this auction is the prominence in it of estate and private collections – a part of the market that has been central to Leonard Joel’s business since 1919. Thus we open with a fine array of silver, all from various private collections (lots 1–37), including a most impressive silver tea and coffee service being sold from an estate having remained with the family for all of its 165 years (lot 30). These are followed by an estate collection of Georgian glass assembled some years ago (lots 38–62) and, from a notable collector in the field, a selection of millefiori and glass dump paperweights including some very fine and rare examples (lots 63 – 73), and then a large and diverse selection of furniture and objects ranging from fine ‘town’

pieces to the more rustic and earthy. Running as a rich and diverse stream through the auction is furniture, art, and objects from the Estate of the late Hylton Grimmer. It is no exaggeration to say that when I first saw this in situ, beautifully arranged in Hylton’s home in the Macedon Ranges, I said ‘we’ll take it all’. We cannot hope to recreate the well-judged style with which it was arranged there but I commend it to the Leonard Joel community as an example of how well objects old, fine, and beautiful can be used and enjoyed today without any fuss or preciousness – an approach that would apply equally well to all of what we offer here. The superb late 17th century Brussels verdure tapestry (lot 168), for example, has for the last twenty years hung as a quietly impressive back-drop to both glittering parties and a busy family life. And then there is the highly important Laidlaw bedroom suite by Robert Prenzel (lots 83–88), in its field an unrivalled example of the ‘private collections’ theme of this auction: commissioned from Prenzel in 1908 by Margaret Laidlaw as a gift for her husband Thomas, it has remained within the Laidlaw family ever since. Leonard Joel is honoured to be entrusted with it now – as we are in assisting all our those whose collections, large and small, we offer here. — David Parsons | Head of Decorative Arts

The Laidlaw suite by Robert Prenzel LOTS 83–88 The following six lots form the Laidlaw bedroom suite by Robert Prenzel. Dating to 1908, it is one of five related suites made by Prenzel between 1905 and 1910, all to commission for prominent members of society in Victoria’s Western District or their relatives. Together, these suites form one of the most important bodies of work in earlier Australian furniture design. This suite has remained within the Laidlaw family since its creation and is perhaps the last of these suites to remain intact in original ownership. Prenzel’s 1905–1910 bedroom suites represent a merging of two seemingly disparate sources of inspiration to which he had turned after 1900: the European Art Nouveau and Australian fauna and flora, the latter reflecting the current of national pride in Australia surrounding federation in 1901. The first of these suites, the ‘Glenormiston suite’, is only partly a precursor of those that followed for while it is generally similar to these in composition and design, its carved decoration is entirely in the Art Nouveau idiom with no Australian motifs at all. The change was to come with Prenzel’s next bedroom suite, the ‘Mathias suite’ of 1906–1907, now in the National Gallery of Victoria. Despite her Canadian nationality, it was Prenzel’s patron on this occasion who requested that her suite be decorated with Australian fauna and flora. The Mathias suite attracted much attention in Prenzel’s Melbourne workshop before it was shipped off and was replicated for another Western District patron. The Laidlaw suite followed in 1908, commissioned by his wife Margaret as a gift to Thomas Haliburton Laidlaw, a prosperous Hamilton auctioneer, station agent, and pastoralist. It remained at their fine house ‘Kilora’ for the next two generations before being moved to another Laidlaw property. The decoration of the Laidlaw suite is the richest and most exuberant of Prenzel’s 1905–1910 suites. By comparison, the design and carving of the Glenormiston and Mathias suites is restrained. In casting this restraint aside for the Laidlaws, Prenzel reached for the first time the full-blown style for which he is best known. The Laidlaw suite is more boldly carved overall, in deeper relief and richer in faunal decoration, including, most spectacularly, the near-freestanding figures perched atop three pieces in the suite, features not found on any of the other suites. In its freedom, Prenzel’s work for the Laidlaws marks a high point among these suites. The last of these, the ‘Davies suite’ of 1910, retains much of the character of the Laidlaw suite but at a more subdued level. It appears Prenzel made no further suites, turning instead to producing the smaller works – stand-alone faunal panels and occasional single pieces of furniture – that are now the most commonly seen of his work. It is notable that the manner and character of these – typically carved in deep relief, and sometimes surmounted with figures carved almost in the round – relates most closely to that of the Laidlaw suite. Seen in this context, the Laidlaw suite may fairly be regarded as the fullest expression of what we now associate with Robert Prenzel. 210 ELLIS SILAS (1885-1972) A portrait of a working man Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1914 lower left 94 x 72cm PROVENANCE: The Estate of the late Hylton Grimmer OTHER NOTES: In juxtaposing a fit, strong working man with the recruiting poster on the wall behind him, Silas here represents a prominent theme in the early stages of the First World War: the need for the Allies’ working men to become fighting men. Comparison with photographs of Silas suggests that this is a self-portrait. Silas, who is known to have been patriotic, joined the Australian Imperial Force in October 1914, the year this work was painted. If this is a self-portrait, it seems likely to be associated with that event. The poster depicted appears to be French (the word ‘patria’ – mostly commonly seen in this context in the phrase, ‘pro patria’, ‘for one’s country’ – being spelled here in French, ‘patrie’), suggesting that Silas, like many others, was moved to action by the fate of Belgium and France in August and September 1914.

210

Some months later, Silas was amongst those who went ashore at Gallipoli early in the morning of 25 April, 1915, following which he became one of the very few artists to paint works depicting the Gallipoli campaign from first-hand experience. $2,000-4,000 211 ANTOINE BLANCHARD (1919-1988) An early 20th century scene in the Place de l’Opera, Paris Oil on canvas Signed lower right 31.5 x 44.5cm $2,500-3,500
