Anna Grassham | Head of Modern Design
His first shop was on Carlisle Street in St Kilda, later to become the famous Galleon café where his painted pink and grey walls remain. He was soon invited to open another store on Greville Street Prahran, when the strip was buzzing with fashionable cafés, clothing boutiques, and record stores.

This career closing auction offers some of his most treasured acquisitions, along with a vast array of pieces from different design movements, sure to please all tastes.
Geoffrey was born in Moama in 1957, growing up along the banks of the Murray River. He lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother and sister. Despite not being wealthy, his mother had a sophisticated influence on him, and a modern aesthetic that emanated throughout their house.
By the late 1990s, Geoffrey had established himself as a serious and respected Melbourne dealer. He took the standalone shop at 296-298 Malvern Road South Yarra. His initial business name, TCD (Twentieth Century Design), had unfortunately been registered by someone else, however “adversity turned to advantage, and what better way to sell, than with my own name”. For the next 27 years, Geoffrey Hatty Applied Arts became an institution for interior designers, collectors, and stylish clientele. He is renowned for his keen eye, and interest in design movements outside the Geoffreybox. has always moved with his own visual sentiment, rather than what is on trend. Perhaps this is the secret to his quietly confident success, and how he himself makes sense of the world.
Geoffrey Hatty has been running his 20th century decorative arts business, Geoffrey Hatty Applied Arts, for over three decades now. His natural awareness of beauty and design is what makes his pieces so sought after.
Geoffrey moved to Melbourne in the early 1980s to become a hairdresser, which in his own words “was simply to meet women”. He moved within the alternative arts scene, living in shared houses where his love of decorating continued. “As long as I didn’t move my flatmate’s television, I could do whatever I wanted.”
Opposite: The Good Weekend, ‘Hunter and Collector’ by Karen McCartney, Photography by Armelle Habib, March 2017
“I don’t like to be pigeonholed but rather, try to find the virtue in a wide range of things.”

27 STANISLAV100 LIBENSKY & JAROSLAVA BRYCHTOVA GLASS SCULPTURE Melted blue cast glass mould of dove in flight. (Signed lower right) ProvenancecCzech1960s - (Purchased on Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles, California) 97h x 113w x 19.5 Box dimesions In 1954, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová began working together in the Czech glassmaking center of Železný Brod. In 1963, the partners married in Prague. During their long collaboration they developed the mold-melting technique that would allow them to create their distinctive abstract style of art glass. This style and technique made Libenský and Brychtová the most internationally influential of the Czech artists who worked behind the Iron Curtain from roughly the 1950s to the 1980s. Fundamental to the artists’ work is a conceptual and metaphysical approach, related to Czech cubism and philosophy. Light is the central idea, representing the fourth dimension, a notion they termed “light-space”. This light-space is represented by the intentional definition, direction and manipulation of light in their works, through the use of prisms, lenses, and rough textured planes. $130,000-160,000 100
