Accompanied by an Omega presentation box. NOTES Gilbert Albert was born in Geneva in 1930. After studying jewellery craftsmanship and design at L'Ecole des Arts Industriels in Geneva, in 1955 at the age of 24 he joined Patek Philippe as designer and head of the workshop. Breaking away from traditional shapes, he introduced asymmetrical triangles and rhombic forms inspired by his passion for modern sculpture and works by his favourite artists, such as Brancusi and Mondrian. He also introduced textured organic surfaces on the asymmetrical shapes designed for the Patek Philippe “Ricochet” collection. His daring and unconventional case designs are considered as cutting-edge today as they were 50 years ago. In 1960 he went onto design for Omega, subsequently opening his own workshop in
Geneva in 1962 specializing in the design and manufacture of unique jewels and objects. From 1958 to 1988, his fantastical and original pieces gained him the prestigious 'Oscar' award at the Diamonds International Awards no less than ten times: three for Patek Philippe, two for Omega and five times under his own workshop founded in 1962 – a unique achievement. Over the years, Albert's work has been exhibited around the world from London to Tokyo, Johannesburg to New York and he was the first living artist since 1917 to be invited to show his creations in the Moscow Kremlin, first in 1991 and again in 2003. $10,000-15,000 8 PAIR OF 18CT GOLD EARRINGS, OMEGA, DESIGN ATTRIBUTED TO ALBERT GILBERT, CIRCA 1969 Of foliate design, each modelled as a textured openwork elliptical hoop, gross weight approximately 10.83 grams, numbered D797, maker's mark for Omega, approximately 22.5mm × 12.5mm, clip fittings. $800–1,200

11 A RARE 18CT GOLD, PERIDOT AND DIAMOND ‘SPRING RING WATCH', NO. 83 FROM THE 'ABOUT TIME COLLECTION', FOR OMEGA BY ANDREW GRIMA, 1969 Centring a bezel-set, oval faceted peridot 'glass' bordered by a line of brilliant-cut diamonds framed by a textured surround and hoop, signed Grima, maker’s mark for Omega, manual, cal. 484, 17 jewels, movement no.: 26’584’837; maker's mark HJCo for Haller Jewellery Company, British hallmarks for London, 1969., ring inner diameter approximately 20mm, size U. Accompanied by About Time Collection, 1970 original index and price list.
NOTES Andrew Grima’s (1921-2007) innovative and adventurous jewellery designs won him prestigious commissions from numerous patrons including Jacqueline Onassis, Princess Margaret and HM Queen Elizabeth II along with several awards including 13 De Beers Diamond International awards and a Royal Warrant. Intrigued by Grima’s bold and visionary approach to jewellery design, in 1969 Omega commissioned him to design a collection of 85 jewellery watches in a resolutely modern style. Titled 'About Time’, the collection challenged Grima to integrate the precise watch movement into his amorphous designs along with using a gemstone in place of a watch glass, an innovation that he hoped would
allow the wearer to see ‘time through stone’. A unifying theme of the collection was the idea that each watch would be unique, and that the major feature would be the dial that would not be decorated in any way, nor would it bear indexes. This Spring Ring Watch is an extraordinary example of 1970s Modernist jewellery. Amply demonstrating Grima’s flair for texture and his unique understanding of materials, the ring watch exemplifies Grima’s achievements in this seminal prestigious collection. It is these unique features that even today remain unsurpassed for their ingenuity, audacity, and powerful sculptural design. $10,000–15,000

NOTES The Cadenas bracelet watch, meaning ‘lock’ in French, combines both form and function for its wearer. Widely acknowledged as one of the most iconic timepieces ever made, it is said that Wallis Simpson, later the Duchess of Windsor, suggested this design to Van Cleef and Arpels in 1935 as it was deemed unsightly in the early 1900s for a woman to wear a wristwatch in public. Cased in a bracelet design, the Cadenas dial is designed at an angle so only the wearer can subtly check the time. King Edward VIII presented the very first Cadenas watch to Wallis in 1936. Soon thereafter Van Cleef and Arpels entered the model into commercial production and it proved to be extremely popular. The current model is a tribute to its predecessor. $16,000–22,000
