The Collector's Auction –
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then an object must be tantamount to a novel. In our latest Collector’s Auction you will find a trove of stories about craftmanship, ownership, connoisseurship and fashion to enthral you. The first tale is that of Gordon and Jackie Samuels who together formed an enduring legacy. Their daughter, Selina Samuels, has kindly written some words on the following page which take us on a journey through these artefacts that were acquired during their long marriage and life partnership. The next chapter tells a story of modern Australian life with outback landscapes from artists including D’Arcy Doyle (lot 64), Graham Cox (lot 67), Geoff Dyer (lot 57 & 68), and Denise Mung (Lot 75). Our always eclectic decorative arts offering boasts Australian and international designers, some inspired by flora and fauna such as Robert Prenzel and Grace Seccombe’s Kookaburras (lot 111, 112 & 129), Patrick Mavros’ silver animals (lot 108, 109 & 110), and ceramic wares by Moorcroft (lot 113 & 114) and Worcester (lot 119). The jewel bright colours of the collection of Italian and Scandinavian art glass enliven any home. The fine furniture in the auction includes an exemplary piece of Georgian craftmanship and ingenuity in the Morgan & Sanders mahogany dining table (lot 174); with its seamlessly interlocking six leaves extending to over 3.5m, one can only imagine the entertaining dinner parties it has hosted over the past 200 years. The group of British Watercolours (lot 183-203) lead us through various stages of the development of the watercolour and together provide a brief but effective history of the most popular art form that flourished in the 19th century. The pieces in our traditional fine and decorative art offering house a myriad of faces, no doubt each with their own tale, such as Jan Portielje’s elegant questioning lady (lot 215), the penitent Magdalene (lot 223), and the bronzes of Adonis (lot 226), the Borghese Gladiator (lot 253), and our alluring cover lot by Louis Chalon (lot 267). To conclude the auction our Asian works of art speak of a bygone world and host many secrets long lost to the passage of time such as a Japanese suit of armour from the Meiji Period (lot 296), six Chinese stucco heads of Luohans (lot 320), and two Vietnamese stoneware jars from the 13th century (lot 291 & 292). Whichever story you find in the auction to captivate you we hope it’s one you keep going back to and re-visiting time and time again. — Madeleine Norton | Decorative Arts & Fine Art Specialist

The Gordon and Jackie Samuels Collection LOTS 1–44 The beautiful pieces of art, furniture and objects collected here belonged to a couple who played significant roles – both individually and as a partnership – in the public and intellectual life of this country. Gordon Jacob Samuels was born in London in 1923 and Jacqueline Kott was born in Perth in 1927. They met in Sydney in 1956, married on 4 April 1957 and went on to form an enduring and creative partnership. Gordon was a barrister and then a QC, appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in 1972, the Chancellor of the University of NSW (1976-1994) and then Governor of NSW (19962001). Jackie was a prominent actor in radio, television, film and particularly on stage in the 1950s and 1960s, most often remembered for her stand-out role as Martha in Edward Albee’s excoriating Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. She was also a committed supporter of the Arts and served as an artist member of the Australia Council, was on the board of NIDA and a trustee of the Sydney Opera House. They supported Gordon and Jackie Samuels
each other’s professional ambitions and had a shared commitment to serving their community, which was clearly in evidence at UNSW and in their shared gubernatorial responsibilities. This collection of their prized possessions represents their partnership; the bringing together of items they inherited as well as those they amassed during their marriage. There is the impressive collective of silver tableware that Gordon inherited from his mother Zelda, and the hand-painted ceramics and Persian carpets that Jackie’s father Max Kott bought to adorn the timber floors of the old house of Jackie’s childhood on the banks of the Swan River. Gordon and Jackie collected the furniture over time, but I remember most of it from my childhood in our house in Bellevue Hill. There is Jackie’s beloved George III corner cupboard that took pride of place in the dining room, full of decanters of brandy and liqueurs. There is Gordon’s desk that was originally in his barrister’s chambers on the 8th Floor of Wentworth Chambers in Phillip St and then in his study at home. I
Gordon and Jackie Samuels in their younger days.
remember him sitting at that desk writing legal judgments late into the night. They also collected a variety of artworks together, sometimes the work of friends, sometimes to commemorate an official visit to a region in NSW. The Norman Lindsay cartoons graced the walls of Gordon’s study, while Jackie enjoyed the mystical quality of Michael Shannon’s Figures on a Jetty. Rapotec’s large untitled work had pride of place in the sitting room, with the stormy dark sky and rusty earth contrasting with a green of the walls. Jackie particularly loved Greg Irvine’s statue of a seated girl and jokingly called it “Jackie”, so for many years I believed it was a representation of my mother! And, of course, there is the serene portrait of Jackie that Gordon commissioned from Judy Cassab, feeling it was only apt that she should be painted by one of the greatest female portrait painters of her generation, fittingly also a Jew. My parents were not strategic collectors, but everything that they had was meaningful to them and fundamentally beautiful, representing their gracious and generous lives, well lived. — Selina Samuels | February 2022, Sydney 5

Born in Bordeaux in 1889, Jean-Gabriel Domergue exhibited artistic talent from a young age with his landscape paintings winning him awards at French and Italian Salons from the age of 17. It wasn’t until the 1920s that his focus decidedly shifted to “la Parisienne” – the slender, casual, elegant and effervescent women of fashionable society. Throughout the course of his career he would go on to paint approximately 3,000 portraits of actresses, young dancers, members of the aristocracy and socialites. A modern Fragonard or Watteau, Domergue played an essential role in the evolution of fashion, not only designing for the most famous couturiers, including Paul Poiret and Henry Marque, but also establishing with his art the standard for beauty in the mid-20th century.

LITERATURE: Robert Dechant & Filipp Goldscheider, Goldscheider: History of the company and catalogue of works, Arnoldsche, Stuttgart, 2007, p. 420 (another example) OTHER NOTES: Celebrated Austrian sculptor and ceramicist Josef Lorenzl’s graceful representations of the female form were in high demand in the early 20th century. This depiction of famous German dancer Niddy Impekoven is particularly sought-after by collectors for its sense of movement, and use of clean lines and geometric shapes which embodied Lorenzl’s mature period when he created pieces for Austrian ceramics company Goldscheider. Niddy wears her hair in the bob that was fashionable in the 1920s, and performs her signature expressionistic style of dance with arms outstretched in a richly coloured butterfly costume (resulting in this piece also being known as “The Butterfly Girl”). This costume was one of her most memorable, worn for her dance “Der gefangene Vogel” (The Captured Bird) which she would go on to perform internationally as one of the most iconic dancers of the Golden Twenties. $3,000-4,000

The mezzotints are notable for their skilful execution, fanciful costumes and striking poses likely inspired by the weekly plays in London and masquerades held in pleasure gardens. 224 224 after ARTUS WOLFAERTS (1581-1641) (18th century) The Last Supper oil on canvas inscribed to left: JULIUS ROMANUS 100.5 x 152.5cm (118.5 x 170cm framed) $10,000-20,000
During the last meal before his crucifixion, Jesus announces to his twelve apostles that one of them will betray him. It is a moment full of shock, gravitas and confusion. This particular compositional interpretation is taken from Flemish artist Artus Wolfaert’s Last Supper from 1630. Wolfaert was trained by Otto van Veen (who was also Peter Paul Rubens’ teacher), though his works created after his teacher’s death in 1629 demonstrate more of an influence by Rubens and his humanist ideals. This Last Supper shares similarities with Rubens’ own painting of the Last Supper (1631-1632). Both works portray a conflation of theological cornerstones, including Christ’s prediction of betrayal and his apostles’ horrified reactions, the foreshadowing of his crucifixion, and also the act of Christ blessing the bread (and thereby instituting the sacrament of the Eucharistic). There is more of a flowing dynamic between the figures than is seen in many Renaissance compositions, Da Vinci’s included, and both Rubens and Wolfaert (and by continuation the artist of the present lot) seem to have studied similar models and facial expressions for their figures. Jesus' face and expression are remarkably similar in Rubens' and Wolfaerts' paintings, and the present lot. The traitor, Judas Iscariot, is recognisable in the present lot on the viewer’s side of the table clutching a purse which contains his reward for identifying Christ to the authorities the following day. He wears a yellow robe, a colour which was often associated with mistrust, envy and duplicity. The subject of the Last Supper is one of art history’s most recognisable and iconic, largely due to Leonardo Da Vinci’s interpretation (1495-1498), and the sheer number of artworks exploring the subject during the Renaissance. Due to its compositional complexity and the sheer depth of emotion and spirituality contained in its narrative, a 'Last Supper' painting was often executed at the height of an artist’s career - as their chef d'oeuvre. The subject has been deconstructed and revisited through the centuries, even by artists such as Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol, testament to its ongoing significance in the canon of art history.
