The Collector's Auction –
As anyone who has worked at an auction house can attest, the beginning of the consignment process can be an exercise in patience, however, by the time the deadline comes around one forgets what an empty showroom feels like. It has certainly never been truer for The Collector’s Auction on the 30th of May. The sale has expanded throughout time and space to encompass all the fun things that our clients now come to expect from a mixed decorative arts, furniture and art auction. However, the level of quality and craftsmanship has remained constant.
Starting at 12pm, our auction begins with modern and contemporary art and sculpture by both Australian and international artists of acclaim. Highlights include a large-scale Peter Churcher painting (lot 7) which utilises figuration and symbolism to express the grandiose, and a mystical composition by one of the earliest proponents of Jogja surrealism; the Indonesian artist Ivan Sagita (lot 25). Closing the art section with more traditional imagery there are Australian landscapes by iconic names such as Hans Heysen (lot 44), David Boyd (lots 32 & 39), and Pro Hart (lots 38 & 40), an array of nautical scenes including two by celebrated marine artist John Allcot (lots 51 & 52), and a beautiful still life of roses by the Austrian 19th century painter Josef Lauer (lot 47).
In typical Collector’s fashion the auction weaves through a selection of modern furnishings featuring Murano art glass and an impressive table clock by Hermle (lot 72), into more traditional categories of furniture and decorative arts offerings. Of note are a pair of Louis XV walnut fauteuils, originally bought from the storied David Jones Arts Gallery by Lady Finlay (lot 100), a Louis XV walnut bombé commode (lot 101), and the silver presentation cigarette case, a royal gift to Tom Roberts as thanks for his painting Big Picture, 1903 (lot 163).
Rounding out the catalogue to close we have an eclectic mix of Asian works of art, including a Chinese carved wooden head of Bodhisattva likely from the Yuan Dynasty (lot 202), an 18th century Burmese bronze figure of Buddha (lot 205) and three Japanese swords (lots 215 & 216). With a diverse range of unique and original statement pieces, these lots are sure to enhance any traditional or contemporary interior.

Mephisto, painted in 1993 was the artist’s first large scale work and was a finalist in the Moët and Chandon Award. “I was grappling with the figurative language and used symbols to express the grandiose. I was working on the theme of male identity, a subject that has continued to be a part of my work. These figures are struggling and engaging in a rivalry. The mephisto is the character who is standing back - the one controlling and responsible.” (Artist’s Statement)

According to her daughter, Eleanor “Peter” Lum Crowe, this was an old Chinese technique that Lum adapted for her own use.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, Sydney
OTHER NOTES:
This cigarette case was presented as a gift to famed Australian artist Tom Roberts (1856-1931) from His Royal Highness the Duke of York and Cornwall (later King George V) in 1901 as a token of appreciation for painting the Big Picture—officially titled The Opening of the First Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia by His Royal Highness the Duke of Cornwall and York, 9 May 1901. This painting depicts the first-ever sitting of the Australian Parliament, held not in Canberra, but at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.
It was commissioned by the Australian Art Association Proprietary Ltd and presented to King Edward VII on 3 July 1904 as a gift from the Commonwealth of Australia; hanging at St James’s Palace until 1957, when it was placed on permanent loan to Parliament House, Canberra where it can still be viewed today.
The Big Picture is monumental in size measuring 358.4 x 504.3cm and includes 269 portraits of the people who attended the historic occasion; including the Governor-General, the members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and Australia’s first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton.
Roberts had a well-established reputation as a portrait artist, and to achieve all of these likenesses, he travelled to Sydney and London to make individual sketches of the key figures in the painting. He noted each person’s height, weight, and even hat size.
Roberts received a handsome fee of 1,000 guineas to complete the work, and the commission appealed to his sense of history. Nevertheless, two years of work to complete the painting took their toll, damaging his eyesight and health.
