S RESEARCH REPORT ADVANCED SCHOOL COUNCILS In 2004 SCUK commissioned a 3 year in-depth action research project to explore the potential of genuine pupil participation to improve schools. The project manager, an experienced teacher, worked with researchers in eight London secondary schools between September 2004 and July 2007. Staff, students and the school councils were encouraged to innovate, explore and push the boundaries over the three years. SCHOOL COUNCILS AND PUPIL EXCLUSIONS REPORT This 35 page report provides several excellent examples of good practice and represents the views of staff and pupils. The research study explores the impact of pupil councils on behaviour and exclusions from school. The aim was to generate examples of good practice as well as identifying possible watchpoints with regard to power-sharing. All the resources in this catalogue will help your pupils aspire to achieve great things through their School Council. But don’t forget that we back it all up with tailor-made training to help you and your pupils fully understand what they should be achieving.
An effective School Council, with full reporting is hugely beneficial in an OFSTED inspection. Our licenced and experienced Trainers will come to your School and work with you and your School Council to cover the aspects of Student Democracy and Citizenship that you feel need reinforcing or expanding upon. To give a few examples (but by no means an exhaustive list!), we can cover: Decision Making Negotiation Peer Support Project Management Teaching & Learning (including Students as observers) Whole school approach to participation Each Trainer will work with up to 25 people (students or staff, or both) and this could be single school or cluster training.
