You owe it to yourself, your School and your School Council to invest in training. Ofsted are looking specifically at judgements for pupils’ outcomes, including “the extent to which pupils contribute to the school and wider community”. An effective and well-trained School Council is the way to satisfy this. During an inspection, Ofsted Inspectors are also specifically tasked with talking with pupils, including “…those holding representative responsibilities, for example as members of the school council”. Are you sure that your School Council is running effectively enough to show an Inspector that you value your students’ views? CPD, as we all know, stands for Continuous Professional Development. This can be broken down into two parts “Continuous” and “Professional Development”. The Professional Development part is great, it moves things along, adds to knowledge and helps success. But… Without the Continuous part, we can become complacent, out of date and dare I even say, stagnant. Your School Council is just the same. Your School Council NEEDS Professional Development, but unless that is Continuous, no-one will ever step outside their comfort zone, nothing new will be tried, no new goals will be met. They are up to date with student democracy issues, they enjoy stretching young people and pushing them to achieve more and they are very able to spot the gaps in your School Council’s remit, responsibility and ability. The necessity for Pupil Voice is not going to disappear. The need grows stronger day by day.
