Shiplake College School Council: Suggestions for use of Mobile Phones in Learning Thanks to twitter we have picked up on some really great lateral thinking from the School Council at Shiplake College. They have suggested that their teachers should take advantage of mobile phones as a way of connecting students with their work! •

It was felt that most students used their phones to pick up school emails (9 out of 10 at the meeting did).

Many used school email to communicate with friends.

Many use phones to log homework details and felt that this was easier and more effective than using the homework diary.

Using phones to photograph diagrams on boards, etc, was seen as very beneficial but only after seeking permission from the teacher. Particularly helpful if mind-maps had been created by group work.

There was general consensus that phones should not be used for verbal communication around the school during the academic day.

It was suggested that apps could be used/developed to access timetables and homework, etc.

It was suggested that the online calendar could be sent to pupils’ phones and they could receive updates/changes.

If selected in a games team could the team sheets be sent to the pupils’ distribution list?

Pupils welcomed text messages from teachers. Could texts be sent from computer to phone making it easier for teachers to communicate to pupils?

It was felt that video recording and voice recording was not appropriate and should be left to departments to put useful clips on the intranet.
