Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebecca. They had twins. The first one was named Esau and the second one was named Jacob. One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry and said to Jacob, “Give me some of that red stuff”. Jacob answered, “I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son.” Esau said. “All right” Now Jacob would head the family when their father died. (Genesis 25, 19-34)

In the year that King Uzziah died, in a vision, he saw the Lord and a number of angels which had six wings. Isaiah tells them he lives among a people of unclean lips. Then one of the creatures flew down to me, carrying a burning coal that he had taken from the altar with pair of tongs. He touched my lips with the burning coal. Isaiah’s lips are now cleared of any sin. Isaiah immediately offers to become a prophet. (Isaiah 6: 6-7)


Jeremiah was a prophet whose religiousness is characterized by his personal commitment whit God. One day Jeremiah went to a potter’s house and found him working on his wheel, then God said to him: Cannot I do with you, people from Israel, the same the potter does with the clay shaping it in his hands? (Jeremiah 18, 1-15)

Wise old Mordecai shows his cousin Esther the decree that the king's minister Haman intends to use to kill all the Jews in Persia. Esther is married to the king, so Mordecai tries to persuade her to use her influence to make the king change his mind.

Judith was the widow of Manasseh; she had a beautiful figure and was attractive. Her husband had left her gold and silver, servants, cattle and estates that she administered. Nobody criticized her because she was very religious. In times of the King Nebuchadnezzar, Judith seduced and deceived Holofernes, who was the General of the Assyrian Army, and then cut his head, saving the people of Israel from his terrible attack. (Judith 8, 7-36)
