— wwdotbookdotcom is a printed publication in response to the ‘book still’ brief, which explores the process of how we read and navigate through content online. This brief not only enabled me to design a piece that would sit at the top of my portfolio but it also assisted me to develop my ideas based upon a subject I have great enthusiasm for. The book investigates the concept of information overconsumption. In the 21st century, we are bombarded with vast amounts of information each day as a consequence of the ever-growing digital age. Prior to the introduction of the web, material was harder to source; therefore individuals were more selective over what information they choose to read. This contrast in how we read information today as apposed to predigital times inspired me into investigating the processes of navigation and filtering through information on-screen. This book is therefore an outcome of my research and development shown in a publication that represents the day-to-day journey of information consumption that an average person may encounter while browsing online. It expresses how a quick look on Facebook or a browse on YouTube can turn into hours of procrastination or overconsumption of immaterial knowledge. Eli Pariser, who wrote the book, ‘The Filter Bubble’, inspired the way in which I would present the content. The Internet activist explains how the web has become a personalised bubble for every user. Tailored content is restricting us from seeing anything outside our own interests and beliefs and we are therefore limited to what content we actually see. We are searching for raw information but getting back links to websites based on our search history or who were following on Twitter. I therefore curated the content to portray this concept of controlled choice and conformity although all of the content is a real representation of a possible journey one may encounter online.

A printed publication was the best medium to demonstrate my opinions and ideas. The book is designed to engage the reader by taking them through a journey that mimics the web—giving the audience the illusion of choice but in reality it is controlled, which again mimics the characteristics of the filter bubble. The typography makes the audience feel like they have choice in what content they read, yet the way in which the book is designed will automatically bring the reader back to the desired linear path. I am therefore targeting the person who spends the majority of their day on the Internet watching and reading insignificant information without even realising the effects. The typographic design was informed by how we read online text. The typefaces reflect features of certain websites but were carefully chosen to form a fluid publication. The book is the same size as an iPad to allow the reader to make associations between both mediums. Furthermore, elements of the book can also be read at a rotation of 90 degrees just like an iPad. Lastly, the book avoids the ‘print is dead’ cliché by echoing the contrasting distinctions of both screen and print. The incompetence of online content in print is evident throughout; consequently I wanted the audience to see that there are characteristics of print that can never be replicated on screen. —

RATIONALE The nine-column grid allowed me to take advantage of being playful with the typography. I used a modular grid to allow me to work horizontally as well vertically. Being able to read the book from two angles was important as this reflected reading on an iPad. I didn’t think that it was necessary to have a baseline grid as I didn’t have any text that needed to be aligned on both pages. However, the modular grid gave me the flexibility to be expressive with the type. The nine-column grid was perfect for the text, but it didn’t work well with the images. I therefore created another grid on a new layer that had eight columns. This allowed me to work with imagery and text within two grid systems. All other grids used were similar but adaptable to the size of each document. Everything was a multiple of three. The grid had nine columns and fifteen rows with 3mm gutters. The margins were 15mm inside, top and bottom with 9mm outside margins. I thought that working in multiples of three would keep the grid clean and structured.

SCALA—SOCIAL NETWORK I wanted a typeface that could be used expressively and one that would be able to reflect the aesthetic of each website. I ended up using Scala to represent all social network websites, as I didn’t think it was necessary to have a different typeface for every one. Scala works well at a variety of sizes and therefore was ideal for my publication.

SCALA sans lf After agreeing on using Scala for all social networking sites, I needed another typeface to represent all other sites. Scala sans, being a great companion to Scala, which works great in both upper and lower case, was the perfect choice. The calligraphic style of both Scala and Scala sans also implies the history of reading and writing to the audience.

GILL SANS MT PRO—BBC The BBC has used Eric Gill’s font as its corporate typeface since 1997 so I thought that it would be completely relivent if I used the font within the BBC content. I aided the typographic style to hint navigation of the BBc website by using clear headings and a variety of weights.

HELVETICA—EXPLICIT POP UP Through research, it was evident that the majority of the pop-ups were ‘typeset’ in a Helvetica style san-serif, so I therefore used Helvetica to reflect that in my design. Screen printing this section in white was essential to make the pop up stand out from the rest of the book as much as possible.

I felt that my draft was too chaotic due to the amount of size variations, so I therefore picked a gradient of sizes that worked well together. By having nine sizes across all six typefaces it created structure to the typography that allowed me9.to be expressive throughout the book without being too hectic.

RATIONALE As my book is about reading on-screen, I used the rgb colour model to pick my colours. Initially, I decided to use the three additive primary colors; red, green and blue but soon realised that rgb green broke up the fluidity of the book. I dropped the green and replaced it with black and found this combination more effective and subtle.

Duchess of Cambridge hoax call nurse found dead video link A nurse at a London hospital who took a hoax call about the Duchess of Cambridge has been found dead. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said in a statement they were "deeply saddened" by the death of the nurse, named as Jacintha Saldanha.
