SOCIAL INCLUSION UNITS Academic, Master thesis project

SOCIAL INCLUSION UNITS Architecture as a social inclusion promoter The weaknesses of the social networks are being amplified by the economic and market crisis we’re facing upon. There are people who were granted as secure in the social framework whose condition and place in it is now changing dramatically. Each month the institutions who develop their efforts towards helping homeless people, are receiving more and more persons who need their services so they can live with the least confort and health they can. Today it’s imminent to find a solution to the problems of these new homeless people, consumerism and crisis victims. Who can’t gather the capabilities to follow the new directions of society and so are thrown out it. With this project i propose a way to find a sollution that can help this new type of homeless people who aren’t still adapted to the street living, and that still have in their minds a resilient feature, using architecture to bring them back into society frameworks.

Homeless are exclude from society. Being included means having work and home.

The main goal of this project is to use two important mechanisms from capitalist societies for the reintegration of a new homeless person back in society, turning capitalism (wich took him out of society in the first place) into the vehicle that will bring him back. One of them a 20ft shipping container that can be found unused in larger numbers each day, and can be considered a waste of capitalism, as they have an important roll in the distribution of goods. The other society’s capitalist mechanism is publicity, a market that moves thousands of euros everyday and that keeps capitalism alive. With this project i propose to work them together in the rehabilitation of a homeless person. Using a container mounted vertically and turning it into a living space (1st floor) and a workplace (ground floor) simultaneously. This way we can adress the two main problems of a homeless person: developing a function in society so he/she can find a new identity on the city, and give them a home. The outside walls will be covered by ads from big brands and all the money gathered from publicity and on the workplace will revert for the homeless so he/she can reconstruct their life, and can in few years participate in society normally. Metaphorically speaking, these units will function as an egg that keeps them safe while their are regaining confidence, strength and money to come back to society again.

S.I.U. can give them work and home, so he/she can get back into society.

SOCIAL INCLUSION UNITS Poject directions and plans On the ground floor as stated above will be the workplace (magazine stand, florist, shoe shiner, street musician), wIth a simple layout that can be easily adapted to the different functions proposed for these units. Consisting on an open space with a window that becomes a balcony. For the creation of the living pod on the top floor a grid of 16 (4x4) modules of 0.60x0.60m was conceived dividing the inside walls in 4 (2,40m:4=0.60m) to easily deal with the short space. So two modules were needed for the bathroom, another two for the kitchen and for the staircase (6 modules). Near the window one module was used for a little table (1/2 module) and a foldable chair, this table works as a night table when the chair folds and gives space for the foldable bed attached to the wall occupying 3.5 modules (2.1x0.6m).

FIVE STAR HOTEL Academic

vFIVE

STAR HOTEL Concept and directions The project’s goal was to design a five stars hotel near the riverside in Porto, Portugal. The program included 100 rooms divided in four typologies, three conference rooms, a restaurant and bar, a spa with exterior and interior pools and a parking facility. The whole program is divided in 4 long arms placed next to eachother. One for the conference spaces, a tower for housing the bedrooms, the third arm is stretched through all the terrain, this arm connects all services, flows of people, and different areas of the hotel. There are 2 openings so that interior spaces can be lighted by natural light. The shortest arm is divided by two so it can provide space for the interior pool and for the extension of the kitchen connecting with the storage spaces under it at ground level. Spa, gym and massage spaces are located around the furthest tree hole, giving it an indirect and even light making it perfect for more relaxed areas. The staff spaces like sanitary, locker room and storage for the restaurant and hotel are hidden inside the land ojn ground floor. The room tower is the exception element of the project. It helps marking the spot of the hotel to it’s surroundings as it is visible from far away. A triangulation of the balconies gives the idea of movement to the tower, breaking its height (9 floors) to the other public areas of the hotel, working at the same time as a sculpture element that conceives identity to the building. On each floor there are 10 rooms, two elevator areas, two firescapes and a room for laundry services.

SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE Academic

SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE Porto, Portugal

This house grows in a stone wall that brings the inhabitants from the street to the house itself. Being hidden from it’s sorroundings it’s seated in the middle of the trees, facing the Douro river and Arrabida bridge. A strategic orientation, so that sunsets can be enjoied at it’s fullness by the whole family. A simple disposition makes it confortable and user-friendly, not occuping much land so it can be used by the family to grow their own vegetables, and by the children to play outside in the dirt far from playstations and tv’s. All the divisions are facing West, except for the lybrary that is facing East and North, being completely open to the trees and rocks. This way the lightning of the room is perfect for a reading/studying environment, blurring the boundaries between natural and artificial universes, as it feels like the trees invade the inside space.

ARREBITA! PORTO Social housing volunteer work

ARREBITA! PORTO Social housing volunteer work Arrebita! is an award winning social entrepreneurship project launched in Porto with the mission to fight the abandonment of its inner city. The project creates a network of win-win exchanges between different parties in order to refurbish derelict buildings money free in cases of social need. The system links international young architects and engineers, suppliers, consultant and construction companies and professors from technical universities in the creation of the social impact we all seek. This is a building that has been derelict for over 20 years and the first to be refurbished through the collaborative network of Arrebita. It is the result in progress of a collective effort that involves international young architects and engineers, companies, universities and institutions all driven to fight the inner city abandonment of Porto.

PARIS MARKET LAB Architecture competition

PARIS MARKET LAB Concept and project directions The goal of the project was to remodel a building surrounding the Saint Germain‘s market in Paris, through the creation of a school/ experimental laboratory food laboratory and its different use whether at night and day. The program included several class rooms, warehouse, restaurant rooms, auditorium and panoramic bar. The main idea arose from the experimental approach towards culinary processes, increasing this art’s task of becoming a ludic attraction in the living of the public space. We envisioned a permanent visual contact with all kitchen activities, whether while you are crossing the building patio or in the restaurant reception and school.

Step 1: Concept Starting with a simplified molecular geometry, trace eight squares connecting the atoms, these will be your dining room modules. Rotate ttwo of them on each row at a 45ยบ angle and use it to arrange the dining rooms merged with the existing building walls

Step 2: School/Kitchen Connect the storage room to the one in the market. Add flexible functions: - Cooking school (day) - Kitchen (night) Set two different areas: - Clean plates/hot meals - Dirty dishes/cuttlery

Step 3: Public space and access (ground) Clear 1/3 of space for public use Open gaps on the existing wall for connection with the market Place souvenir shop Make 2 entry points: 1 for the kitchen, 1 for the restaurant Open a rectangle on the center for visual connection between kitchen/public space.

Step 4: Dining rooms (2nd & 4th floors) Add costumers access Extend clean and dirty areas elevators Open emplyees access Sum the bathrooms Use the dining room modules from step 1 and place them half floor above and below the acces floor, connected by staircases.

Step 5: Dining rooms (3rd&5th floors) Invert the formar dining room plan and place it over the previous one, moving the bent squares one measure forward.

Step 6: Auditorium&Miradour bar (6th floor) Place the miradors around the center piece, connected to the bar and auditorium. Cover the auditorium using 3 downwards slopes. On the intersection open a square for lightning the speaker. Add a ladder next to the bar, for roof access and use it as a 360ยบ terrace 22m high.
