Introduction Where all came from

I’ve personally always been interested in the creations of world and settings for my imaginary adventures. Since my childhood I’ve loved to draw and surround myself with the fantastic creatures and forest that populated the books and the legends typical of my home town and surroundings, the tuscany. Elfs, troll and dragons are a recurrent presence in my works and with the tales of the Landsof Where I wanted to create an organic world where my characters and all the weird creatures that came up in my mind could aventure inside. Tales of the Good Wizard are a series of stories set in the Land of Where, a fantastic world where a medieval fantasy fashion look meets magic and and advanced sustainable technology. The main protagonist and hero of this body of stories is Ulysse the eggbird, a cute creature that find difficulties finding a place in his society and start his personal jouney to find his own talent and eventually became a wizard. Soon he will meet good friends and mentor but he will have to show his value defeating the evil lucio the horse who has became very powerful after stealing the book of knowledge from the Old wizard of the frasconera forest.

STORY

This is the first chapter and the prologue of the real series of tales of the good wizard, infact this first story is about how Ulysse became a wizard, the following depict the adventure and learning trial and errors of Ulysse along the lands of where.

The story Theme, Discovery what does it take to discover YOUR inner treasureS.

STORY

The theme of the story is the pursuit of talent and its derived from my personal life experiences. Its a common tought to believe that talent is something we born with and in a very little part thats true cause genetic and body predisposition can help us a lot in achieving certain results. But to me thats only a 1% of the story. What I strongly believe is that The environment where we grow and the experiences that we encount day after day forge our visions and tastes and its a this point that Curiosity and external encouragement are crucial to the development of a skill. Practicing the skill is what make us talented in a particular field and this explain why talent is something we achieve with study, dedication, passion and consistence and not just something we born with. The ability of connect and relate things is something that we born with (neural system) and I believe intellingence can be triggered if there is determination in doing it. This story is about finding your own training gym.

The pursuit of talent is a Chimera. Ulysse is a little eggbird who can’t fly anymore cause he lost his propeller. He is very curious and interest in a lot of things but he cant figure out what he likes the most. He loves to learn new stuff and practice different things but there is always somebody else better than him. Having a talent means to have an interest and a curiosity for something and devote time and dedication to it. There are no really shortcuts if there is no passion. .Ulysse will realize that only with passion, curiosity and dedication he will be able to became a wizard, and he will be ready to start adventuring in the land of where to learn more things. The evil Lucio the Horse on the opposite side, won't put effort in the process that learning magic requires and as a result he won't be able to control his power and Ulysse will defeat him proving the supremacy of good learning against arrogance and ignorance.

The Story

STORY

Ulysse is an eggbird. All the eggbirds in the eggbird village got a propeller in their head so that they can fly. The eggibirds are very easy going creatures, they all work as honey catchers during the day and eat zippa and chill during the night. Eggbird life goes smooth and without big dramas. Ulysse is very curious and get generally very excited about things, a bit too much for his fellow eggbirds, who have always to deal with the mess he ends up creating.

D

uring a warm and quiet night like many others in the Lands of Where, the eggbirds are eating zippa all together like always around snack time at the Eggbird village. Meanwhile the little eggbird Ulysse and his friends are playing in the woods nearby. Ulysse as the youngest of the crew is challenged to fly over the top of the tallest trees. Ulysse as an inexperienced flying eggbird struggle but succeeds and excited flies higher and higher till he reaches the clouds. Exactly when is about to enjoy the moment a strange mysterious and magical lighting bolt strike upon his head and make his propeller fly away. Without propulsion He falls down and hits and destroys the main eggbird oven were the daily Zippa is made. Its the biggest tragedy in long times and The eggbirds,gathered in council and tired of Ulysse causing problems, exhile him from the village. Ulysse is confused but one thing know for sure, its time to do something that no eggbird has done before, exploring the Lands of Where and find some luck and figuring out what he really want to do in life. The day after he leaves the village decided to start a new adventurous life. Its time to lunch and ulysse is fishing by the river whistling. Ulysse is a pretty good whistler and the sound of his voice has attracted a little snake that was wandering nearby. The snake is called Syro and they became immediately friends. They spoke about their lives and Syro want to bring Ulysse to Camerone the old wizard, a wise guy who surely knows something about the recents mysterious storm. As soon as they arrive to the laboratory, they are about to knock the doorwhen it opens "I was waiting you guys" said the Old wizard while letting them enter inside. The old wizard is an old messy scientist-alchemist-magician who saw what happen to ulysse during one of his stargazing session with his big telescope. He is not sure about where the magical thunder came from but he feels that may have something to do with Lucio the horse borrowing one of his magical book and not giving it back, but this was just Camerone hypothesis. One thing Camerone is sure about is the fact that ulysse has lost his propeller is not a coincidence, he may have

the right predisposition to learn wizardry, and so tells everything to Ulysse. Ulysse is very excited, finally a path to follow, finally he is not lost anymore! Ulysse want to became a wizard and can't wait no more but the learning path is a long and slow journey which has to be taken step by step, GOING ON THE RIGHT STEPS. But in order to learn magic Ulysse needs to study the book of knowledge which was borrowed to Lucio the horse who never gave it back. Lucio lives in a castle with his crew of servants and the way to his mansion is unclear and difficult. Ulysse, with the help of Syro, the errand snake, will have to go to Lucio's and take the book back. They start the journey throught the forest and they get lost, tell each other stories eating in front of the fire, procrastinate, get into troubles till they arrive to lucio, who lives in a big castle. After a long journey through the Lands of Where they finally start seeing at the horizon the silhouette of what seems to looks like the Castle of the Evil Lucio. They have encountered numerous creatures and met various interesting characters along the way, they have seens new places and visited stranger villages, eaten weird food and slept under the stars. The amount of stories and experieces they gained is enourmous, they faces different trials and fought with the worst monsters and now they are ready to approach Lucio even if they havent casted any magic yet. Lucio is a selfish, narcissist horse very proud of himself who wants to learn magic just for being the most powerful horse in the county but he doesn't really care about the magical learning process and he doesn't apply at all. As soon as our heroes approach the castle they notice that all around nature is getting weird, just like somebody did very strange magic around, but they don't understand what can be happened, but looks like somebody is casting some random spell around. They annoucend themselves that they are sent by the old wizard, Lucio knows they want the book back, he's actually using the book to do magic but without learning them so its causing a lot of mess around, including the trouble of ulysse and his village. As soon as he see them he catch Syro so he can make the super hyper power potion and cast a spell on ulysse to make him disappear in the prison in the dungeons. You have to know now that lucio didn't know how to read a book and he kept reading the book upside down, casting spell inwardly. Ulysse so, instead of disappearing in the prison ends

up teleported at the top of the highest tower of the castle, where in the potion room, Lucio is trying to finalize his potion using the last ingredient needed, Snake tongue! Meanwhile Ulysse, on top of the tower, is scared of heights without his propeller and overhear Lucio telling to Syro that he will kill him soon. Ulysse is angry and bravely jump down the roof breaking through a window into the potion room where Lucio is about to cook Syro. Lucio is pissed off and is about to attack back but with a rapid move ulysse gets the book of knowledge which is hold in the book holder, up side down. Ulysse holds the book trying to reading it and casting spell to defeat Lucio. He tries to trap him "CAGE APPEAR!" he says but as opposite a pair of wings appear on Lucio, who is pretty happy about since he can fly now. The situation is hot and Ulysse think about make lucio very very little like a fly and cast another spell, GET SMALLER! but of course, again, lucio the horse became an enourmous flying monster that breaks the castle itself. Lucio is very happy now cause he doesn't need the potion of power and the book of knowledge anymore, thanks to ulysse is now super powerful! and he is about to stomp over ulysse and syro with is giant foot when Ulysse, scared,faint. Not now! not now! says syro trying to wake up him hiding among the ruins. In that moment that Ulysse gets a vision of the old wizard who remind his of the good learning path that he has to take, and the good way of doing thing. Ulysse suddenly wake up and turn the book that he was holding upside down again decided to transform Lucio back in a horse. But ulysse is not an expert wizard yet, and instead of transforming him into a horse, transform lucio into a donkey. Lucio is really really angry and embarrassed and escape swearing revenge. All the spell he casted get breaks and everything became normal again, everything but the Ulysse's propeller. They came back to the Old wizard and for Ulysse its time now to learn wizardry but magically Ulysse's coat start glowing and a magical star appears, he has already started to learn! He learned how to approach things in the right way and is now ready to became a wizard. The following day he came back to the eggibird village and after repairing the oven with a spell learnt the night before he ate a piece of zippa and smiled, thinking about all the adventures he will experience soon with his fellow buddy Syro.

In october 2015, during the San Francisco Academy of art 24h comic contest the prologue of the full story of tales of the good wizard was developed. The ideas were still pretty rough and Ulysse was not destroying the Zippa oven. There wasn’t really a good reason to leave his village and a good story start was missing, but the main ideas were already there.

In this almost unknown and huge Nowadays we still don’t exactly where the Lands of Where are located, and thats probably where the name, Lands of Where, came from, but this are only hypothesis and the age of the lands of where is exstimated to be billion of turtle years old. The vast majority of the Lands of Where is still unknown and covered by mysterious fog that prevent any possible exploration. The fog is one of the main problem of the Lands of Where and scientists and magicians from all over the cities work daily solving this weird natural phenomenon.

The art style INSPIRATION AND REFERENCES

Cellular Automata natural patterns

The land of Where is a strange place, and as a respectful strange place there you will find a large variety of strange shapes and materials. To convey this feelings to the game the art was directed towards a bold lowpoly style with the use of very graphic textures and cell shading rendering. The priority is set to ephatize colors and shapes. Psychedelic art and the 80’s movement menphis style are clear reference for the use of colors and patterns.

Other sources of inspiration for the creation of pattern were Japanese patterns, the greyscott algorithm and nature observation. Very interesting shapes came from the observation of the our world on a smaller scale. The shapes we can see with a microscope are an infite source of inspiration to create a magical world.

Adventuring in the Lands of Where is always a curious and funky experience. The wide variety of explorable biomes and creatures with which the player can interact will always create interesting game dynamics.

The game play SUBTITLE HOW THE GAMW WORKS

The Tales of the Good Wizard is an action-adventure game with role-playing and puzzle elements set in a large open-world environment.The player controls the protagonist Ulysse and Syro the sidekick from a switchable third-person/first person perspective, in a threedimensional world. The procedural generation of the environment alternates to story driven moments that will help driving the player trough the story. This way every player will experience a slightly different world in an unique experience. The game can be seen as a series of concentrical circles where the player starts from the center and try to reach the outer border. Passing this boundaries will activate videos and checkpoints that will tell the story to the player. Once the player reach the outer level and finish the first part of the game that is story based will unlock passage in to be able to freely explore the vast lands of where.

STRUCTURE

This second part of the game is characterized by the presence of non-player character and quests along the world. In Tales of the Good Wizard the player will be able to make choice and depending on those the event and the story will vary. The player have control on the alignment of the player (good/evil) but only with a good attitude he will be able to accomplish all the quest of the game and finish it.

Physics is very important in the game, the player are able to interact with all the object in the world, which is completely destroyable . A lot of quests and puzzle will involve physics so that a real interaction with the environment is required. The presence of a real physics system allows the player to take advantage of the natural , steep planes, hot air stream, snow,ice and water like in real life. There are element of survival stealth gameplay as well as crafting and trading. The Character as a wizard will learn new spells during the game. With a 3d modeler tool spell the player is able to change the world around him, Bending , torquing, cutting. Other example of magical spell that modify how the player can interact with the enviroment are: teleporting spell, flying spell, elemental spell to interact with othewise dangerous elements. The player can use and create vehicles. In Tales of the Good Wizard the physics engine plays a crucial role in integrating the game mechanics and the art style. The big open world of the land of Where is not just explorable but its completely interactive due to his object system. Everything in the game is achievable and magic is the key element that escape the laws of physics. The use of Ragdolls, Wheater variations and Procedural animations will give a very realistic feeling in contrast with the cartoony and simplified game style.

It is still a mystery how eggbirds born. They literally seems to came from the underground, every two eggbird-weeks in a spot nearby the eggbird village Eggbird eggs spawn from the underground. This absence of parenting reflect in the eggbird society, male and female got totally equal right but the absence of early education makes a lot of ggbirds grow up pretty dumb.

Born and raised in the egg bird village, in the middle of the frasconera forest, Ulysses is a very quite and low profile egg bird who like to spend his time helping around other egg birds in need. Unfortunately he is also very unlucky and most of the time he ends up creating confusion and more problem than the ones he want to solve. He is a very creative egg bird, the only one in his village, and this creative inclination will make him feeling different from the rest of the egg birds. The egg birds are commonly very easy going and a bit lazy and their best life aspiration is to enjoy their daily zippo all together after a day of work. Ulysse is different and he is curious about his future and the possibilities he has. He want to travel outside his village and learn things from different cultures in the land of where. Due to his Egg shape and small facial features Ulysses expressions are conveyed with the gesture of his whole body. Elements like the wizard hat and the coat became expressive element too to convey Ulysses feelings.

Ulysse journey is both physical and psychological, Ulysses during his travels outside the egg bird village will gain experiences and knowledge and this will make him more confident and powerful.

After the Thunder accident Ulysses will lose his propeller and due to this accident he will be able to spin his brain way faster than regular egg birds and this will make him suitable to learn magic and wizardry.

Nomad and wanderer spirit, Syro is a young poisonless snake that live in the frasconera forest among the animal community. he does travel around the land of where and he has a lot of friends and character that he knows. Meeting Ulysses he sees the opportunity of another wonderful adventure. He is not looking to gain knowledge or find a life path, he really enjoy random adventures and improvisation. Wise Clever Messy Intelligent Forgetful Improviser Polyhedric Funny Extraordinary He lives in a hidden spot inside the Forest frasconera and one of the few creatures that knows about him is Syro the snake, who will make him and ulysses meet. He shares a lot with the little ulysses and intact he is a propeller less egg bird too. Being propeller less made him research about the issue and discover the relationships between the loss of the propeller and the ability to learn wizardry. He is a very poliedric magician and scientist and his range of studies is really wide. He enjoy gardening as well making potion, watching stars and studying creatures. He is a good draftsman and maker and, just like Ulysses, loves to create flying vehicles and and alternative energy sources. He is a member of the wizard federation of the

land of where but due to his eremitic life style he has never attend any council in a long time. We don't know exactly why he lives hidden in the frasconera forest, probably as a crazy innovator and quite breaker he was exiled from the egg bird village just like Ulysses.

He lives in a House Laboratory that he designed and built by himself with the help of the forest creatures. The lab is completely autonomous and uses the force of water to generate electricity. Lucio the Horse THE VILLAIN E EVIL LOrd of the lands of where

CHARACTERS

Lucio is one of the last machiohorses in the land of where. This particular species of horse is very ancient and got a main characteristic of being very mean and avid of power. The machiohorse basically fought themselves over and over till they almost extinguish their own race. This already tells a lot about the nature of the villain of Tales of the good wizard. After the loss of the last machiohorses Lucio got to be the one in charge of the machiohorse castle and since then he cover his deep sadness and feeling of being the last of his specie with arrogance and lust for power.

Noble the double cat The double cat companion of the evil Lucio Noble is a magical double cat with two brain two mouth two noses and three eyes, one is shared and can beyond physical object. he is a very powerful character but also lazy who decided to live in Lucios mansion so that his life would be as easy as possible. In truth he is a good double gamer and while Lucio think he

is his friend companion in truth Noble just want a good place to stay where he can steal magical ingredients and learn magical spell from the scroll in the potion room. He is a very mysterious double cat and nobody knows what to expect from him. He is very shady and everybody that really knows him, also doesn't trust him.

The castle

EXPLORATIONS

The Eltz Castle in Wierschem, Germany was what inspired the final design of the castle. The spiky points of the roofs and the vertical lines of the building were a good base to create Lucio’s castle.
