Parque Natural - El Retiro Instructor: Camilo Restrepo Ochoa In the context of the Colombian cloud forest, this proposal introduces spatial design considerations into the active industrial-turned-ecosystem-management forestry practices of El Retiro, thus creating space for extraordinary human experiences. The proposal unveils shifting relationships between the site’s history, industrial markets, and local culture, through deliberate staging of the operations and dramatic recasting of local materials.

mEco - Metropolitan Eco Indulgence Instructor: David Mah Team: Leo Miller, Bradley Howe

This project envisions Brooklyn’s Marine Park as a 24-hour metropolitan district of verdant wonders and nocturnal thrills. While the highly vulnerable salt marsh is less than desirable for the development of permanent residences, the scheme accommodates a constant flux of people and water alike, creating a unique cultural identity within a marginalized area of New York City. MEco raises important questions within the discourse of coastal urbanism, and how designers place value on ecological and social frameworks.

Disturbance Dynamics: Defending the Ecological Commons Instructor: Luis Callejas Team: Leo Miller, Sarah Winston, Xioran Du By recalibrating the existing military base, this project secures 15,000 acres of undeveloped land as an ecological commons. Rather than relying on traditional forms of urban development to recover Upper Cape Cod, this project proposes that the ongoing presence of a re-calibrated military training base can position the landscape as vital urban infrastructure.

Cultivating Franklin Park Instructor: Rosetta Elkin This project seeks to re-frame Franklin Park as a point of intersection between leisure and labor by reintroducing a cycle of tree cultivation and transplanting. On-site nursery activity will serve to provide distinct local identity, opportunities for community engagement, and a rejuvenated tree canopy for the park and greater city. The design creates contrast within a traditionally picturesque landscape park, offering a different understanding of nature in the city and the urban tree as a scenic element. The “park as nursery offers a unique experience for visitors aesthetically and has potential for interesting educational experiences with regards to the park’s history as well as the cultivation of trees.

Boston City Center

Instructor: Rosetta Elkin This redesign of Boston’s notoriously under-performing city hall plaza proposes a dramatically improved civic center including much needed green space, microclimatic diversity, retail and exhibition space, and enhanced accessibility.

Quincy Delta Instructor: Jane Hutton The first semester core studio work focuses on iterative studies of pattern, form, vegetation, and materiality. This project conceptualizes a new urban square in a marginalized traffic island, attempting to reclaim the site as a productive part of Cambridge’s urban fabric. As the only non-Harvard owned parcel of land on Quincy street, the study aims to create a landscape that articulates the overlaps between city and campus.

Tulsa Riverfront Park: Site Model As a studio intern at MVVA, I worked primarily on a 30 foot long 1/16 scale model. My contributions to the project was full-time and spanned the length of the endeavor and included travel from New York to Tulsa to assemble the model for public presentation. The model was key in securing over 200 million dollars for the first phase of design and construction.

Broadway: 1000 Steps Twenty “hubs” spanning the length of Manhattan’s Broadway take the form of small scale, interactive public art installations. The project seeks to decode the natural and man-made systems that define a city. Each hub is comprised of clusters of vertical poles supporting convex mirrors, through which elements of the urban ecosystem are exposed and highlighted. My contributions to the project spanned the length of the project cycle for this West Harlem “pilot hub” and included all aspects from research to installation. The project was featured as a part of New York City’s Urban Design Week and is an ongoing effort through Mary Miss Studio.

Civic Action In response to the accelerated development and gentrification of their neighborhood, The Isamu Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park commissioned Civic Action: A Vision For Long Island City. The project invited artists Natalie Jeremijenko, Mary Miss, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and George Trakas to propose alternate development scenarios for the rapidly changing neighborhood. I contributed significantly to this project in all stages of research, development, and installation as a part of Mary Miss’ team . This project also served as the main case study for my undergraduate thesis research, through which I positioned the environmental artist as an agent of alternative urban futures.
